1. Introduction and Captain s Welcome A warm welcome to the Seniors Section of Cumberwell Park Golf Club. The Club is well known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere and the Seniors Section aims to be the same. With over 200 members, our aim is to provide golf for all Seniors in an atmosphere that balances a competitive edge with social enjoyment of golf for pleasure. Membership is open to all men aged 55 and over. Every effort is made to encourage members to reach a standard of golf and knowledge of etiquette that allows them to take part in all our golfing activities. Tuesday mornings are reserved for our main roll-up programme. Members can roll up in a two-hour window for a variety of formats ranging from Singles to Texas Scrambles, Bowmakers and Pairs Events, with a mix of Medal and Stableford scoring. This presents a great opportunity to play with different partners each week. Other events are predrawn and either played as a rolling or shotgun start. In many cases, there is an opportunity to compete for specific trophies. The events are played over varying combinations of the four separate nine-hole courses. There is also a New Members Society roll-up which takes place on Thursday mornings. The format is usually a Bowmaker and all new Senior Members are welcome to join this society. The aim is to provide a further opportunity to join in and get to know other new members in the Section. In addition to the roll-ups, we also play 33 summer inter-club friendly matches, both home and away, which present an opportunity to play at other clubs and meet their members. An active handicap is required to take part and we encourage all senior members to join in. You may also apply for selection to play in the inter-club Winter League (maximum handicap of 18). The Club also runs a very well supported Seniors Open each July. Together with a number of Away Days and other golfing social activities throughout the year, the programme offers a rich variety of activities for all. A 100 Club draw is made every month with a proportion of the revenue stream supporting a number of the Seniors activities. Participants have a chance to win significant cash prizes and all are encouraged to take part in the scheme. We look forward to welcoming you to Cumberwell Park Seniors. 3 3. Seniors Section Activities The Seniors Section exists to encourage the enjoyment of golf and good fellowship. There is an active website where most documents mentioned below are published. (Please see list of links for these titles below). You can also go to the CPGC website home page and select Golf/Members Area/Seniors Section. The other important information source is the Seniors Notice Board. This is situated in the corridor leading to the changing rooms. If you have any further queries, please contact any Committee Member who will be pleased to help. A Captain s Newsletter is issued approximately every 3 months updating on Section activities. Membership and Subscriptions - Membership is open to men aged 55 years or over. There is an initial joining fee of 5 plus an annual subscription of 5, due on 1 st January and normally collected at the Christmas Trophy Presentation lunch in December. Membership application forms can be obtained from the reception desk or downloaded from the web site (Section Information page). 100 Club Lottery - A number of events throughout the year, such as the AGM and Christmas Trophy presentation lunches, Away Day events and inter-club friendly matches are subsidized by the Seniors Section and by the income generated through the 100 Club. We would encourage you to join the Club, which operates throughout the year and offers the chance to win significant cash prizes. Please see details in Section 8 below. Tuesday Events The programme of Tuesday events can be found on the Club website. Please see list of Web links below. Updates are posted on the website and Notice Board. All Tuesday events require an active handicap of 28 or lower. These events comprise a mix of individual and team competitions, most of which operate on a roll-up basis. The normal entry fee is 3.00, which includes 1 for the 2s competition on the par 3 holes. Competition fees are collected on the day by a member of the committee, based in the Spikes Bar. They will allocate your start time, course and playing partners. Some Tuesday events and other special events require prior entry. Event details and entry lists are posted on the Notice Board several weeks in advance. Entry is achieved by adding your name to the entry list on the Notice Board and paying the appropriate fee. Trophy Competitions - There are a number of competitions played for trophies, including the Seniors Championship. Please keep an eye on the Notice Board for details of these competitions and entry/payment requirements. The maximum handicap for entry is 28 and the maximum allowance is also 28. 3

Other Seniors Competitions Details about other forthcoming events will be displayed on the Notice Board, usually seven weeks prior to the event. Some competitions require entry fees to be paid in advance. This is achieved by placing an envelope into the Treasurer s collection box, situated directly opposite the Notice Board. Please ensure that before posting the fees envelope you enter all necessary details, including the competition concerned and your name! Other events may require players to pay on the day. The closing date for entry into any of these competitions is usually three weeks before the event, with team lists and tee times displayed two weeks prior to the event. Events are often over-subscribed so please register your interest promptly to avoid disappointment. Handicaps To be eligible to compete for prizes and trophies in the Seniors section you will need to have an Active Handicap in accordance with the CONGU rules used by the Club s Handicap committee. Once your handicap is Active it will be continuously adjusted by your results from competitions. Handicap reductions may be applied after any good individual score. Handicap increases are only made based on results from qualifying rounds. Etiquette - Golf is founded on principles of Honesty, Integrity, & Courtesy, which form the basis of the Royal & Ancient (R&A) code of behaviour guidelines called Etiquette. Please see Section 5 for a guide to help you understand these requirements. The Committee occasionally arrange for a Club Professional to present sessions on etiquette, golf rules and card marking for seniors who are new to the sport. Please look out for these on the Notice Board especially if you are new to the game. Cancellations - If you are unable to arrive to at a pre-booked Tuesday event on time then please try to inform the starters by phoning the Emergency Phone number or the Club Reception. Lateness can cause scheduling problems and playing partners may be left in limbo! If you cannot play in an event that you have already entered then please inform the Competition Secretary as soon as possible so he can find a replacement. Failure to arrive or provide notice will mean that the entry fee will still be owed by the player. Score Cards and Results - Your score card will already be prepared for you on competition days and should be collected when booking in with the starters. Your card should always be marked by your opponent during the round. You record your score on the relevant column of their score card. The Rules of Golf require that both the player and the marker take care in recording the score accurately. Strokes can easily be overlooked, so do take special care to mark cards accurately because it is a disqualifying offence to return incorrect scores or to submit a card that has not been signed by BOTH the player and the marker. The completed card should be handed to the scoring panel, normally in the Pro-shop or Spikes Bar. They will check all cards and allocate the winners and runners-up. Results are published on the Seniors website and Notice 4

Board. Scores from qualifying events will also be recorded in the website howdidido.com. Access to your result is both free and fast. Inter-Club Friendly Matches - Each year between March and October the Section plays a programme of home and away friendly matches against the Senior Sections of other Clubs. To play in these matches you must have an active handicap. Between January and March there will be an opportunity to register your availability for playing in friendly matches over the whole season. The Match Secretary will use this list to select a team for the match. Priority will be given for those willing to play both the home and away fixtures. The selected team for each match will be displayed on the notice board at least two weeks before the match. The Match Secretary will also notify selected players by . If you are selected to play, or as a reserve, you will see your name on the team selection notice and you should tick against your name to confirm availability. If you are unable to play it is your responsibility to arrange a replacement. Priority must be given to the named reserves, in the order shown. When a reserve is found you should notify the Match Secretary to confirm your replacement. There is also a Winter League played against 7 other clubs. The maximum handicap allowance is 18. Please look out for details on the Seniors notice board. Seniors Inter-Club Friendly Matches Background The Seniors Section plays 33 friendly matches against other clubs. In the summer we currently play 14 clubs, both home and away, each year. One further club (South Wilts) plays us home and away in alternate years. In the winter we play in a league. These matches provide a relatively cheap way of playing golf elsewhere and a chance to socialize both with fellow CPGC players and those of other clubs. For the summer matches ALL members are encouraged to participate. An Active handicap of 28 is required. The winter league organisers have stipulated the maximum playing handicap to be 18 and a minimum age of 60. The Summer Matches The summer matches (33 for the 2017 season) take place between March and October. Each includes a team of 6, 7 or 8 pairings from CPGC who play in a better ball match-play format with pairings from the opposing clubs. All clubs try to arrange that high and low handicappers are appropriately paired and matched to their opponents. Matches start around midday. After each match there is a two-course meal with coffee. The total cost for the golf and meal is between and per head. In addition, it is the home teams responsibility to provide opponents with drinks after the match and during the meal. At Cumberwell, the cost of a bottle of wine for use during the meal is included in the match fee. This is intended for sharing between four players. The dress code is Seniors Section 5

colours (yellow shirt and green jumper) for the match itself, with jacket, tie and trousers for dining. After their first match, Cumberwell players are awarded a Senior Section Club Tie. Selection Process The committee, through the Match Secretary, seeks to ensure that selection is fair to all Senior Members and provides a balance between the number of HOME and AWAY matches that an individual plays. To facilitate this, the following principles will be applied: 1. A couple of months before the first match, members will be invited to indicate their interest in playing in any/all fixtures. 2. It is the intention that those members selected will, wherever possible, play an equal number of home and away fixtures. 3. Members who are available for both the home and away match for a particular club will receive selection priority. 4. Where a member plays an away match and then cancels his availability in the home match, he will be deselected from any further away matches until he agrees to play in an alternative home match. 5. Those members who do not wish to pre-plan their availability will still be able to post it on volunteer sheets as and when they are posted for specific matches (note that selection for away matches will be based on having played in a home match, not necessarily the same club). Guidance when playing in friendly matches:- Please arrive at the Clubhouse where the match is being played at least half an hour before the first tee time. This enables pairings and order of play to be confirmed between the captains on the day, allows you to meet your opponents and to enjoy some refreshment before play. At away matches, you are expected to provide your own transport or to make arrangements to share with another team member. After each match a hot two-course meal is served which all team members are expected to attend. All players attending the post-match meal are expected to wear a smart jacket and tie. Cumberwell members will be presented with a Seniors club tie at their first match. This should be worn at all subsequent matches. (Members have been shot for turning up without it on the day!) The Winter League The league consists of two divisions, each made up of 4 clubs that play home and away matches. The clubs that top each division play in a home and away knockout to determine the overall league winner. The matches (6 or 8 depending whether CPGC finish top of our division or not) take place between November and February and each club enters 4 pairs per match. Pairings are balanced as per handicaps. Matches are scheduled to start around mid-morning. Coffees are 6

provided before the match and a one-course lunch provided after the golf, all at a cost of 8.00 per head. The HOME team is responsible for providing the post-match drinks. The dress code is yellow shirt and green jumper throughout. In view of the small number of matches in the winter league, the teams will be selected for all matches from the list of names entered at the initial interest stage and before the competition begins. Cancellation Procedure for Matches Members who apply to play in a match, are selected, but then have to cancel, are responsible for finding their own replacement using the procedure below. 1. As soon as you know you are unavailable refer to the list of published reserves. 2. In priority order telephone or reserves to find out if they can replace you. (If there are no reserves then refer to the list of people who regularly play in matches). 3. When a replacement is found, immediately ring (or ) the Match Secretary to confirm the change. 4. The Match Secretary will then change the match selection sheet. Selection sheets will be published on the Club Website, within Seniors on the Inter-Club Matches web page. A list of players who regularly support inter-club matches will also be published on the web page. If you have any questions, any committee member will be happy to discuss them or contact Guy Hindley, the Match Secretary Seniors Open and Invitation Days - The Seniors Sections of Clubs in this region each hold an annual Open Day, to which Seniors from other Clubs are invited. A diary of events throughout the year is available and can be found in the Open Events Folder kept near the entrance to the Gents Changing Room. Competition formats vary and prices may or may not include a meal. Our own Seniors Open Day is usually held on a Thursday in July. This has traditionally been organised as a four ball better ball competition. Where any Cumberwell Senior is involved he must be paired with a senior invited from another Club. The club provide the pricing for this event, which normally includes a meal. Annual Christmas Lunch & Presentation of Trophies - This event is normally held in December and is preceded by a nine-hole, shot-gun start, four ball competition. Queries, Comments & Suggestions - The Committee is elected to serve the members and welcomes any feedback and suggestions. You can pass comments on to any member of the Committee and the Vice-Captain will ensure they are dealt with. Please do come forward with any constructive ideas. If you d like to assist with the organisation of our busy program, or have any problems, please have a word with any Committee Member. 7

5. The Spirit of Golf This is a summary of the Royal & Ancient Group s view of the key elements that make up Golfing Etiquette. (For more information go to Amateur-Status/Etiquette.aspx) Spirit of the Game, Respect, Etiquette Golf is founded on principles of Honesty, Integrity, & Courtesy, which form the basis of the R & A s code of behaviour guidelines called Etiquette. These encourage golfers to exercise fairness, to the degree which they would like to receive in return. There are three main elements covering pace of play, care for the course, and consideration for others: Pace of Play..as a general rule, try to keep up with the group in front! Ball in rough; if your ball has come to rest in any area off the fairway, where there is a good chance that it might not be found, please play a provisional immediately. The Rules of Golf state that you have 5 minutes to look for your ball. Please do not exceed this time limit. If the match behind you are ready to play and you are still searching for your ball, always extend the courtesy and call them through. If you have lost a hole on the match in front, and the game behind you is pushing, please call them through. Courtesy of the course always be aware of others on the golf course, particularly if they are playing faster than you. Please do not leave trolleys/bags in front of the green whilst putting out. Please do not mark your scorecard on the green; complete the scores on the next tee and if you are first to tee off, do so first and then mark your card. Always be prepared to play when it is your turn to do so. When walking to your ball you should already be thinking about which club you might use. Once you have addressed the ball you should be looking to play your shot within say 10 seconds. It has been noted that some players take almost 30 seconds to hit the ball. 20 seconds may not sound much, but when multiplied by 5 (on an average hole) this can mean the loss of around a minute, and 11

around 20 minutes per round. This type of slow play is unnecessary and avoidable. When putting, by all means view your putt from all sides. But please do this whilst others are putting out and don t leave it till it is your turn to putt. When playing a stableford competition, if you cannot score, pick up. Please show common courtesy to the match behind. On average a 4-ball should be able to complete the course in 4 hours. If you are regularly taking longer than this, please consider what you can do to speed the game for all. If you follow these guidelines (as most do) the speed of play will improve. Care of the Course Rake Bunkers (and remove any stones or other loose impediments). Repair Divots by replacing them (or using sand on a tee if provided). Avoid causing divots when taking practice swings. Repair Ball-Marks and damage to the green (but pitch marks only on your putt line). Take care removing and replacing the flagstick or ball (do not use head of a club to remove ball). Don t lean on your club when on the putting green, (especially removing the ball from the hole). Consideration for Others No Disturbance or Distraction: take care not to walk, talk or make unnecessary noise when others are playing their shot. On the Putting Green: you should be careful not stand on another player s line of putt or, when he is putting, cast a shadow over his line. (You should remain on or close to the putting green until all other players in the group have holed out!). Scoring: if you're acting as a marker, on the way to the next tee check the score with the player. Safety: Ensure no one can be hit by your club when swinging it. Wait until the players in front are out of range. Always alert green staff nearby or ahead before making a stroke that could endanger them, and SHOUT LOUDLY and IMMEDIATELY FORE if there is any danger of your ball hitting someone, and especially where you cannot see where the ball will land. Know the Rules of Golf : if you know the rules it may help others and avoid undue delays. 12
