Curtis, the 1906 champion, was beaten 2 up and 1 to play, by Mrs. H. Arnold Jackson. Miss Frances C. Griscom (Merion), champion of 1900, succumbed to Miss Eleanor W. Allen (Oakley), by 3 and 2. Miss Fanny C. Osgood (Brookline), had to accept defeat at the hands of Mrs. C. H. Vanderbeck (Phila. Cricket), by 5 and 4. Miss Alexa Sterling (Atlanta), gave Miss Bishop a good match, losing only at the seventeenth green, by 2 up and 1 to play. Mrs. Ronald H. Barlow (Merion), and Miss Margaret Curtis (Essex County), had to go an extra hole before the former qualified for the second round. Miss Lillian B. Hyde (South Shore), had no difficulty in beating Miss Marion Hollins (Westbrook), the latter being completely off her drive, the margin of defeat being 4 and 3. The feature of the second round was the elimination of the medalist, Miss Bishop, by Miss Elaine V. Rosenthal, of the Ravisloe Country Club, Chicago, the latter winning in decisive fashion by 6 and 5. This pair met a year ago in the national event at Wilmington, then winning by. Mrs. E. W. Daley (Oakley), a former winner of the women's Southern championship, got beaten in this round by Miss Ethel M. Campbell (Overbrook), by. continued her good work by beating Miss Eleanor W. Allen, by 3 and 2. Considerable interest attached to the match in the third round between Miss Hyde and Mrs. Barlow. It was a see-saw affair up to the fifth hole, where the match was all even, but indifferent work through the green on the part of Mrs. Barlow put her 1 down at the sixth. The following three holes were halved, leaving Miss Hyde at the turn. Halves marked the tenth and eleventh. Mrs. Barlow lost the twelfth, and at the
4 THE AMERICAN GOLFER 1069 thirteenth drove out of bounds, giving Miss Hyde a comfortable lead of three holes, with only five to play. The latter missed a short putt on the fourteenth, Mrs. Barlow winning, 3-4. She reduced her deficit at the next with a fine 4, leaving her only 1 down. The match was squared at the sixteenth, Miss Hyde losing by taking four putts. The seventeenth was really the decisive hole. Mrs. Barlow, playing the odd on her second, reached the green with a brassie, Miss Hyde, with a iron, flubbing, but reaching the green on her third. Playing the odd, she ran down a very difficult putt for a 4, but Mrs. Barlow, not to be denied, managed to get one down almost as hard for a 3. At the home hole Miss Hyde topped her second shot and the hole was halved in 5, Mrs. Barlow winning the match by. Miss Caroline Painter (Midlothian), the former holder of the women's Western championship, got beaten by, who was playing very fine golf, by 4 up and 2 to play. THE SEMI-FINAL ROUND In the semi-final found herself opposed to Mrs. Vanderbeck in the upper half, and Miss Rosenthal met Mrs. Barlow. had a good chance to win the first hole in 3, but a miserable putt resulted in a half in 4. The putting, on the whole, especially in this match, was rather weak. Going out in 42 to her opponent's 45, was three holes to the good. There was little to choose between them coming in. Missing a two foot putt for a win on the fifteenth, Mrs. Vanderbeck could only secure a half. The sixteenth was halved in good 4's, thus leaving dormie two. With a stroke in hand, the latter could have won the seventeenth, but contented herself with a half in 6, taking the match by 2 up and 1 to play. Scores: : Out In Mrs. Vanderbeck: Out In The other semifinal match, between Mrs. Barlow and Mrs. Rosenthal, was marked by some spirited golf. Running down a thirty foot putt on the first green, Mrs. Barlow won the hole. The second was halved in good 5's, but at the third squared the match with a fine putt for a 4. It was give and take to the turn, where the match was all square, both going out in 41. A wild tee-shot at the tenth cost the Chicago girl the hole, Mrs. Barlow easily winning in 3-6. The match was squared at the next, Mrs. Barlow putting her tee-shot out of bounds, losing 6-5. went to the front at the twelfth with a fine 4 to Mrs. Barlow's 5. The latter evened up matters at the thirteenth, where hooked her tee-shot to the rough. Overrunning her try for a 2 on the short fourteenth, Mrs. Barlow failed to get her next down and lost 4-3. The Chicago girl reciprocated on the next green, taking three putts and losing the hole 5-4. On the sixteenth Mrs. Barlow failed to reach the green on her second shot, losing 5-4, leaving and 2 to play. With a superb second shot to the seventeenth green, Mrs. Barlow won the hole 4-5 and squared the match. Both got off good drives to the home hole, and both played short on their seconds,
5 1070 THE AMERICAN GOLFER finding the long grass on the right of the deep bunker. Both were on the green in 3. Miss Rosenthal ran her approach putt up stony, Mrs. Barlow overrunning three feet. Failing to get her next down, she lost the hole and the match. Scores: : Out In Mrs. Barlow: Out In three putts. She squared the match, however, on the long second, partially aided by a stymie. Indifferent putting cost the Chicago girl the third. The fourth and fifth were halved in splendid 4's. On the sixth, after being bunkered on her second shot, Miss Rosenthal secured a good half in 5 by running down a long putt. The seventh hole was halved in an indifferent 6. topped her tee-shot to the short eighth into the pond, being bunkered, Miss LILLIAN B. HYDE driving at the short tenth hole at Nassau. Mrs. Ronald H. Barlow is standing at the left. THE FINAL Starting out, got off a good tee-shot, pulling into the rough. An excellent shot out failed to reach the green, however. 's second was badly sliced and found the bunker to the right of the green. Both on in 3, lost the hole by taking but winning in 4-5. With a beautiful drive, followed by a superb approach, won the ninth by running down a twenty foot putt for a 3, so that at the turn she stood only 1 down. The tenth went to, her opponent hooking her teeshot away outside the circus green. gave every evidence
6 THE AMERICAN GOLFER 1071 of being completely demoralized in playing the eleventh. Her third shot found a bunker, from which she failed to get out on her fourth. The next ran clear across the green into another bunker. Her first attempt to get out was ineffectual, but on her second essay she got out so well that the ball careered across the green to a third trap in a far corner, after all of which mishaps she picked up and was three holes to the bad. Mrs. Jackson lost the twelfth by slicing her second. The thirteenth was halved in 5. A good tee-shot to the short fourteenth enabled the Chicago girl to secure a 3, her opponent being bunkered and failing to get down a longish putt for a half. Going to the fifteenth, topped her tee-shot, but was fortunate to secure a half in 6 owing to indifferent putting on the part of the Oakley representative. was fortunate in running through the mounds guarding the sixteenth green, securing a half in 4, 's long try for a 3 missing only by a hair. Both got good drives to the seventeenth, 's brassie second slightly overrunning the green. Her opponent, playing the like, was a little too vigorous, her ball overrunning into a bunker. A good out left her with a long try for a 4, the ball overrunning some seven feet. This, however, she got down for a good half in 5, leaving dormie 1. The home hole was practically a repetition of the previous one. Both played their seconds short, but both got bunkered, in a pot bunker to the left and in a deep pit to the right. Mrs. Jackson's third was well out but a little strong, overrunning into the road just on the edge of the green. Playing the odd, she made a beautiful stroke, her ball being practically dead,, meanwhile, in essay Mrs. H. Arnold Jackson, Oakley Miss Harriot F. Curtis, Essex County.. Miss E. W.
