1 THE AMERICAN GOLFER IT IS INTERESTING to trace the history of the simplified method of indicating on the score-board the holes where strokes are to be taken in handicap match play. Formerly an elaborate table was printed on the back of the card. Our attention was drawn to the innovation some seven years ago (we think by our friend, Dr. Roland J. Pope, of the Manly Golf Club, of Sydney, N. S. W.), and the present writer introduced it for the first time in this country at the Garden City Golf Club. The system was described in the November, 0 issue of THE AMERICAN GOLFER, and is reprinted hereunder. Its merits were quickly recognized, and it has since been adopted by practically every golf club throughout the country. From a letter recently received it would appear that the idea originated with Mr. Ernest J. Hayes, of Sydney, and was first taken up by the Concord Golf Club, of Sydney, in 0 and immediately adopted by other local golf clubs. SIMPLIFIED SCORE CARD As a method for doing away with the necessity of turning over the score card to ascertain on which holes strokes should be taken in handicap match play, THE AMERICAN GOLFER takes pleasure in suggesting the simple addition of a column of figures on the front which will clearly show the proper sequence for taking or giving strokes. Holes Dis. Par Strokes Self Opp. Holes Dis. Par Strokes Self Opp ½ ½ ½ ½ Here is the usual form of table for the course covered above: HOLES AT WHICH STROKES ARE TO BE at at. at.. at... at... at... 2 THE AMERICAN GOLFER Check off the rotation of holes at which strokes are taken as follows:,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and. Then put the figures,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and opposite the sequence of holes and the card is ready for use. The rule for the application of this simplified card is "Take a stroke at every hole that has a figure equal to or less than your handicap opposite it." For example, on the sample card below, if you are to receive two strokes, you simply run your eye down the stroke column and see that you get your strokes on the th and th holes. If you receive seven strokes, you get them on the d, th, th, th, th, th and th, and so on. In order to make the reading as clear as possible, the figures in the stroke column should be printed in a different color ink. The process of changing the card from the present form to the new is less complicated than to ask the golfer to do it himself every time he goes out on the links and gives or receives strokes. A trial of the new system is invited and cards from various clubs adopting it will be appreciated by the Editor of THE AMERICAN GOLFER. TABLE OF NET HANDICAPS FOR BEST-BALL Sum of team's Handicap. THE SENIOR'S TOURNAMENT THE ELEVENTH ANNUAL SENIORS' tournament was played, as usual, at the Apawamis Club. The event this year extended over four days September st to th instead of two days, as heretofore. This was found necessary on account of the congested number of entries. The field was divided into two sec-

3 0 THE AMERICAN GOLFER tions, one-half playing eighteen holes a day on September st and d and the remaining half eighteen holes a day on September d and th. It is probable that next year the playing conditions will be slightly modified so as to provide for the play on alternate days instead of two days successively as at present. This will not player could win more than one prize. By reason of this fact, it was several days after the tournament was concluded before the official list of prize winners was given out. Following is the list. One of the exceptions was Mr. Martin Carey, who won the Class A prize for the best net score on September d and th AT THE SENIORS' TOURNAMENT ( Left to right ) JUDGE MORGAN J. SULLIVAN, of the Louisville Country Club. "GOLF was invented by the Scotch. It is too fast for the Germans, too slow for the Irish; the French despise it; the Spaniards think it is a drink instead of a game; the Americans affect it, and the English are born with a sixth golf sense. Believing in reincarnation I hope to return to earth in a million years from now a perfect golf player. Golf is the king of out-door sports. Skill at it is something a rich man can not buy, nor a poor one inherit. Proficiency is only gained by hard work and much prayer. A good man in this life ought to be rewarded with the right of way on the bluegrass fields of the new Jerusalem and be privileged to play with golden balls and silver clubs, with fluttering female angels for caddies. "Golf is as welcome as an oasis in a desert, as tantalizing as a mirage, ever beckoning and alluring. It taunts and maddens; it has its favorites, as the Gods have; it turns from the eager and showers its largess often in the paths of the most care-

7 THE AMERICAN GOLFER less. The man who can play it regularly and not break a majority of the Ten Commandments is a Christian gentleman. Golf is as great a leveler as death. It uncrowns the kings of finance and makes suppliants of statesmen. It, so to speak, lays the Wall Street crown beside the scepter. "Golf, architecturally speaking, is as perfect as the Parthenon. It is an enduring, harmonious, artistic structure builded on a foundation of honesty, ability and fair play. The man who does not like golf after having played it twice is a meglomaniac misanthrope, and a truncated hypothenuse in the bargain and any other hard names you can find in thesaurus. A good golfer is necessarily a sober, clean, decent citizen." IT WAS an excellent field that foregathered at the invitation tournament of the Greenwich Country Club, as evidenced by the following list of qualifiers: Francis Ouimet, Woodland Philip V. G. Carter, Nassau Max R. Marston, Baltusrol W. Parker Seeley, Brooklawn Gardiner W. White, Flushing Dudley H. Mudge, Town and C'try. Reginald M. Lewis, Ridgefield Francis R. Blossom, Exmoor C. L. Watkins, Brooklawn C. L. Watkins, Apawamis J. T. L. Hubbard, Brooklawn V. C. Longley, National John M. Ward, Garden City Dwight Armstrong, Yale Gaines Gwathmey, Apawamis Dr. W. D. Macdonald, Wee Burn.. F. S. Gaines, Yale st R. 0 0 THE TOTAL NUMBER of men and women who play golf is greater than the total number of men and women who watch and play baseball, accord- d Total. R. There was a tie in the qualifying round for low score between Francis Ouimet and Philip V. G. Carter, each recording,. On the nine holes play-off the Bostonian, playing par golf, went out in as against Mr. Carter's. It may be said that the feature of the meeting was the play of Dudley H. Mudge, of the Town and Country Club, St. Paul, who, in beating Mr. Ouimet and Mr. Marston in successive matches, showed conclusively that the honor he won in leading the field in the national amateur championship at Detroit was by no means a fluke. The finalists were Mr. Mudge and Mr. Carter, the former, in turn, disposing of C. L. Watkins (Apawamis), by and ; Francis Ouimet, and, and Max Marston (Baltusrol), and, while Mr. Carter beat, in turn, Gaines Gwathmey, the Apawamis Club champion, by and ; John T. L. Hubbard (Brooklawn), and, and Reginald M. Lewis (Ridgefield), and. Mr. Carter maintained his form in the final, going out in to his opponent's, and with,,, as against,,, on the incoming holes, beat Mr. Mudge by up and to play. The beaten eight of the first sixteen was won by Francis R. Blossom, the Intercollegiate champion (who was beaten in the first round by John M. Ward Garden City), who beat Mr. Gwathmey in the final, by and. The second sixteen division was won by C. E. Van Vleck (Baltusrol), who beat Dwight Partridge (Bedford), by and, the consolation division going to T. M. S. Rolls, who beat his clubmate, James T. Soutter, by and. The third sixteen division went to Stuart Gillespie (Wee Burn), who beat J. D. Chapman (Greenwich), by up.

8 THE AMERICAN GOLFER ing to The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Golf is becoming a national game, because both men and women can play the game. Baseball has its devotees only in the masculine ranks. Women can watch the game, but few can either understand or play it. Baseball is too strenuous for the person who does not play regularly. Many play until they reach. After that they quit the game as a regular form of exercise and pleasure, unless they go into the professional ranks. But golf is a game for all ages. The old as well as the young can play. It gives one as much fresh air as does baseball, and it keeps one healthy without straining the muscles. These who could afford to play baseball can afford to play golf. It is not much more expensive. A set of golfing clubs, balls and other equipment does not cost much more than a baseball uniform, a half dozen bats, spiked shoes and other baseball paraphernalia. There are in America today something like 00 golfing clubs allied with the United States Golf Association. That represents a golf population of at least 00,000. That is only a small part of the army of golfers. In every city where there are public links there are many golfers not associated with golfing clubs. They play either on the public links or on the private links at the invitation of some friend who happens to be a member of a club. There are between,00,000 and,00,000 golfers in America today. When the big cities have completed their proposed public links the golfing army will be perhaps increased,000, It is estimated that there are about 00,000 golfers in New York City and vicinity, while there are about 00,000 in the State. Pennsylvania has about 00,000 putters. Even for the spectator golf has more beneficial results. At a baseball game the spectator watches the play from the grandstand. At a golf match the spectators must do as much "leg work" as the players. He has to walk over the entire course if he wants to see all the play. Thus the golf spectators gets almost as much beneficial exercise as the golfer, while the only thing a baseball fan gets is cramped limbs and fresh air. In chilly weather the golf spectator can walk around and keep warm. The fan must sit in the stand and suffer chills. "What is there about this game of golf that has increased its players from the,000 of ten years ago to the,00,000 or,00,000 of today?" is the question. And the answer is: "Try the game once." "YOUNG DOBBINS, the lawyer, has had an office here for several years. Is he getting any practice?" "Of a certain kind." "And what is that?" "Mostly golf." Birmingham Age- Herald.
