2 Good Golfers. Better People. More Than A Game Our Mission... To positively impact the lives of our local youth by providing structured educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. Reduce Obesity Rates of young people by promoting habits that lead to active, productive and healthy lifestyles. 34% of Charleston Co. Youth are Overweight. Increase High School Graduation Rates by teaching youth decision-making, problem solving and goal setting skills. 28% of Charleston Co. Students Fail to Graduate. Improve Poverty Levels by providing youth with positive core values to help them succeed at home, school and in the community. 15% of Charleston Co. Residents Live Below Poverty Level.
3 Developing Leaders Through Participant Opportunities $1 PER HOLE At our seven program locations, participants at any level can show their Yardage Book to receive $1 per hole playing privileges, where they can hone their golf game, persevering to be better, even outside of scheduled programming time. GOLF BUDDY Making new friends and being courteous on the golf course is made easy by Golf Buddy, a private online social group for families. Parents post, looking for playing partners for their children at our 7 area program locations. JUNIOR CADDY PROGRAM Teenage participants are invited to caddy at the Daniel Island Golf Club, where they can further the judgment they ve learned by helping members read putts, select clubs, and gauge yardage. CHARLESTON JUNIOR INTERCLUB During weekly summer play days, participants carry their own bag, keep their own score, and call penalties on themselves in a mildly competitive setting to reinforce the integrity they develop in Core Programs. WINTER FAMILY SERIES In the off-season, families are invited to monthly events such as scavenger hunts, parent-child competitions, and family golf days for young people to show off the golf skills and life skills they ve learned, such as respect and honesty. LPGA-USGA GIRLS GOLF Girls Golf is aligned very closely with The First Tee s Core Values and has 5 E s of Girls Golf (Empower, Enrich, Engage, Exercise, and Energize) to promote sportsmanship and keep female members enrolled in co-ed Core Programs engaged in golf. SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Birdie, Eagle, and Ace level participants apply to receive paid internships with the chapter, where they assist with summer outreach programs, confidently working with other non-profit organizations like the YMCA, Humanities Foundation, Special Olympics, Lowcountry Autism and City of Charleston Recreation Department. PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE Participants 13 and under at the Advanced PLAYer and higher levels compete against teams from other golf courses, playing alternate shot format and further instilling the importance of sportsmanship. SNAG SOME SUPPLIES Each summer, before the start of the new school year, active participants and their siblings are invited to an afternoon filled with SNAG baseball and new school supplies to start the year confidently, in the best way possible! PICK UP STIX To ensure that our young people have developmentally appropriate equipment, The First Tee offers a club fitting program where participants can trade in their old clubs or receive their very first set. Participants borrow these clubs and are responsible for them to practice outside of class.

5 MEET KHARYNTON BEGGS Kharynton Beggs started playing golf when she was six years old and was enrolled into The First Tee classes shortly after. Originally from Baltimore, MD, Kharynton stayed in the program for 10 years and her love for the game grew as the time went by and her skills improved. On a national level, Kharynton has become a recognized name for anyone in the First Tee community. Attending her first national event in 2016, she went to the Life Skills and Leadership Academy in Minnesota. The next summer, she attended the inaugural John Deere Drive Your Future Academy, which was a unique all-girls event, in Atlanta, and the International Junior Golf Academy in Bluffton. That November, she was selected for the Outstanding Participant Summit in Orlando, where she was able to attend the network meeting with the entire The First Tee community. Through this she was required to think of a community service project to implement into her community when she returned from the Summit. Her project is an all-girls programming class which she is planning to implement over the summer. Similarly, this May she was a First-Finalist for the Wells Fargo Succeeding Together Contest. This essay contest was focused around Go-To Teams, and with the success of being a finalist for the contest she was able to attend the Wells Fargo Championship and walk inside the ropes. This summer, Kharynton will be attending the Congaree Golf Initiative in Ridgeland, SC, the National Par-3 Championships in Richmond, VA, and the Perfect Sense Unified Challenge in Washington D.C.. Kharynton also volunteers as she continues to show her passion for community and outreach. She was one of the founding Teen Advisory Council members and was one of the first people to volunteer to become a mentor in the Mentoring Program. She will be going into her senior year of high school in the fall and she continues to play in tournaments in hopes of playing collegiate golf. She is looking to major in psychology and possibly public policy. Although she does not know exactly what she would like to do after college, we know she will be successful wherever she goes. Similarly, she has said that she will always try to be a part of The First Tee family, whether that is through volunteering or otherwise, she wants to continue to give back to the program that has given her everything. Kharynton has been one our chapter s most outstanding participants, and we are looking forward to seeing what the future holds for her WHAT WE VE ACCOMPLISHED CORE PROGRAMS 822 participants 8 program locations PROGRAMS BEGAN 132 young people SCHOOL PROGRAMS 13,236 students 32 Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester County Schools 2017 OUTREACH PROGRAMS 2,068 young people 13 partners CURRENT REACH 16,126 young people
