1 Notes from North Spring Edition 2016(Twitter and Tweet) Newsletter This edition will be on the NMGC website NORTH MANCHESTER GOLF CLUB - SOCIALS Christmas and the children s party seems a long time ago but nevertheless it is certainly worth mentioning as the children i.e. the juniors are the future of this club. Children s Christmas party The Children s party held on the 13 th December 2015 was once again a huge success. Santa and his little elf brought smiles and sometimes tears from all the children. Each child received a gift and had their photograph taken with Santa. JJ and Sheila would like to thank the following John Mitchell for his assistance in erecting Santa s Grotto, Chris Dempsey for the loan of his bouncy castle and his brother Mick Dempsey for his time and patience taking, developing and distributing photographs. Sarah our granddaughter for her creative face painting, Jenny Poole for her input with the children s gifts and general overseeing of the children whilst at play, Pamela in the kitchen who worked hard making sandwiches and Jelly for the children s buffet and finally to the Mums, Dads and grandparents for bringing their little ones to the party. Santa has now hung his beard up and his little elf has laid her big ears to rest Applications for the above jobs will be appreciated and auditions will take place in November 2016 Santa (JJ) and his little elfer (Sheila)

Last year s New Year s Eve party was smaller than the year before with the Marquee not being used. Thanks must go to Phil Tonge for setting up the Ball room and decorating it so well, ably assisted by Jenny and Phil s sister Pam. Thanks Pam that Blue Tack was just what was needed! TURKEY SHOOT /15 This year we were unable to enjoy our annual turkey shoot competition due to bad weather. It was rearranged twice but each time the weather was against us. With sad regret it was decided to abandon the event. Let s hope we don t have the same bad luck next time, JJ Walsh, social organiser MEN S DINNER On Friday the 5 th April one hundred and thirty two men enjoyed delicious cuisine and a side splitting night of comedy.

3 The ballroom looked splendid with table and chair settings fir for a Queen. Comedy was provided Billy Flywheel who did slight of hand and tricks that had every one bemused. Audience participation played a big part in starting the evening off to a very relaxed atmosphere, his piece - de resistance was when he had JJ completely under his spell and control with his hypnotic powers which had the members in stitches (Sheila is now taking lessons from him) requirements of cliental, took time and researched in order to find and book the comedian s who would suit NMGC. To John Mitchell who assisted setting up the room, Pamela in the kitchen who at the last minute had to stand in for Callum who was taken ill and staff who assisted her. To the bar staff for efficient service and the waitresses who were organised in serving the tables. Terry Hyde as compere was his usual competent and funny self This was followed by Comedian Jed Stone who one could only describe as hilarious and members were responsive to his kind of comedy. These nights do not take place by waving a magic wand * Unlike the spell JJ was under Sheila * A great deal of hard work goes on weeks before the event, so special thanks go to JJ who with his trusty Tool Box and saw made tables to fit the Finally to all members who attended this traditional event, NMGC need support like this, it nurtures goodwill and camaraderie which when our new club house is in place will attract new members into our fold Sheila Walsh * Sheila were you hiding round the corner at the men s dinner watching??*

4 Results Corner Winter League 1 st D Herbert 2nd D Mellor 3 rd I Masterson Amateur Mixed Foursomes Team Championship for the Archie Preston Trophy (Manchester and District Golf Alliance) A Team consisting of 7 Men and 7 Ladies took on Walmersley Golf club on Sunday 24 th April at North Manchester. It was a hard fought match with some very closely contested matches, North came out on top with a fine victory 4-3 Well done North Manchester. It is not too later to put your names down for selection for the next round, men maximum handicap of 18 and ladies 30. Chairmans Notes 21/04/2016 It has been a long winter and the course has been subject to a lot of wear and tear, which will take time to recover. It is always a difficult decision, whether to open the course to play or close to protect, both of which seriously affect the overall finances of the club going forward through loss of revenue or cost of repair. It is to the credit of all concerned that a fair balance has been achieved and it is hoped that members respect the decisions when made, even though at the time they may not be what they would have liked. Hopefully this stop start to the season is behind us and we can enjoy what s left of the Spring and on into the Summer. The club had a good start to the season and were blessed with good weather for the Captains Drive In, with an excellent turn out by the membership to see Gary, Doreen and Jordan in their endeavours to clear the lake at the first, after sampling some liquid refreshment, designed to encourage or give courage. Congratulations to all concerned, with special thanks to Jason for running the tee events, Callum for an excellent buffet, Jeff Spencer for the entertainment and JJ for the organisation. Once again the social events held at New Year and the Men s Dinner were well attended, with the latter attaining one of the highest attendances ever, our thanks must go to Pam and Jeanette

5 for providing an excellent meal at short notice, due to Callum s unfortunate illness. Returning to the course, there has been significant changes carried out concerning the woodland, with extensive changes taking place by the side of the 13 th green and 14 th tees, the surrounding areas of the Ladies tee at the 18 th and most recent the 11 th on the left. The front of the 9 th has been returfed and the bunker removed to aid play, the 11 th tee levelled and re-turfed and the most significant change of all being the re-modelling of the bunkers at the 18 th. Unfortunately due the adverse weather conditions experienced at the time of re-construction, this area is still a work in progress and will require careful management to allow a full recovery to take place. Once again dress in the clubhouse has raised its head, with members not observing what should be a straight forward issue of what is acceptable. Sometime ago the Board, after several request from members, relaxed the dress rules and certain types of dress, hitherto banned, were allowed in an effort to be less formal. clearly stating what is acceptable, and rules applied. Another area of concern, is the misuse of the disabled parking facility at the front of the clubhouse by members who are clearly not qualified to park there. The Board would with respect point out, that these spaces are provided to satisfy the club s legal obligation and not to provide private parking for certain of our membership and would like this practice stopped. John Broadhurst North Manchester Golf club AGM was held on Friday the 8 th April The New Captain Gary Widdup took over the proceedings from the retiring Captain and the new Vice Captain Mr Anthony Speers was introduced to the members that attended the AGM. Terry Hyde was also invited to say a few words as he started his year in his official capacity as the President of NMGC for This clearly is being misunderstood at best or clearly flouted and has led the Board to re-state its position on this matter. 6 The ladies AGM Held on Thursday the 10 th of March was the occasion when the outgoing Lady Captain Janet Day invited the new Lady Captain Doreen Hallam to take over her year of office The New Lady President was also introduced, as Sheila Walsh handed over the Mantle to Pat Chadwick The New Lady vice Captain was also introduced..angela Jones who will assist the Lady Captain this year before taking over the role in March Lady Captain Doreen handing over the Lady Vice Captain s badge to Angela Our new Lady President Pat Chadwick with some of our Lady Members, Susan Lilleywhite, Kath Widdup Mavis Brand and Beryl Jones. Lady Captain s opening competition 3rd April 2016 This was a stableford Competition held over 9 holes to ensure that there was plenty of time to enjoy the sweet and savoury treats provided by the Lady Captain Doreen Hallam at the presentation. The Competition was won by Jenny Poole.

7 Message from the Captain Firstly, I'd like to express how proud I am to be Captain of this great Golf Club and secondly, I'd like to thank everyone for the support and best wishes that I've received since taking up the post. The Captains Drive-In was a special day for myself, Doreen (Lady Captain) and Jordan (Junior Captain) and the great turn-out from the members and their families together with the weather made it even more memorable. I think young Jordan deserved to take centre stage, because for him to stand on that 1st tee, with all those people watching and to smack it over the lake at just 8 years of age, was amazing. If Jordan is a typical example of other new juniors that are waiting in the wings, then the club can look forward to a bright future. The next couple of years will hopefully see massive changes to North Manchester with the proposed development plans taking shape, which will provide us with a new clubhouse that will compliment the quality of our golf course. It's understandable that members still have concerns about these plans, due to previous failed attempts, however, the team in place this time around have a proven track record within this field and as long-standing members of the golf club are acting in the best interest of the club and all its members. The Captain's charity this year will be 'Young Epilepsy', as I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 30 years of age, so the condition and its treatment means a great deal to me. Being diagnosed as an adult, I found it relatively easy to deal with the consequences of the condition, however, young sufferers find this much more difficult as the frequency and severity of their attacks can have a dramatic effect on their and their families day to day lives. This charity aims to provide education and care, support families, fight stigma and undertake pioneering research into the condition, so I hope that you will help me to help others during the course of the year. Finally, I hope that all the members enjoy what promises to be a great golfing year, but not to good on a Saturday!!! Gary Widdup Mr Captain

8 The Drive in This was held on Sunday the 10 th of April 2016 following the completion of a shotgun start 18 hole 4BBB. Doreen Hallam, Lady Captain, Gary Widdup, Mr Captain, Jordon Wilson, Junior Captain, Terry Hyde, Mr President, Pat Chadwick, Lady President The Ceremonial Drive in was it s usual splendid affair and just for a change the weather was also sunny and warm, hopefully a sign of the summer to come! Although it needs to stop raining before then Callum and Jason played their parts with both tradition and fun adding to the occasion. This year the Captain and Lady Captain were joined by the Junior Captain Jordon, who brilliantly contributed to the drive in over the water on the first tee. A fantastic day overall was then rounded off in the ballroom with JJ and Mr President hosting the entertainment which was provided by Jeff Spencer and a very good buffet was provided by Callum and Pam with the kitchen and bar staff working very hard to cater for the many members who attended on the day. 9 Message from the Lady Captain Hopefully with the help of the other ladies it would be great to see an increase by the end of the year. Doreen Hallam Lady Captain I look forward to having a great year together with Mr Captain, Mr President, Lady President and Vice Captain. We had a wonderfully sunny day for the drive in. Everything went really well and it was fantastic to welcome the Junior Captain Jordon. Hopefully this tradition will continue. The celebrations in the clubhouse afterwards were well attended and the atmosphere was brilliant. Thanks to Jason, JJ, Callum and Jeff for making the day. I must also thank my daughter Fiona for the lovely flowers. In fact thanks to everyone else who contributed to the day and special thanks to Mick Dempsey for all his superb work with the photographs. We have already started our club competitions with wins in the Bell cup and the Archie Preston. Plans for the future include arranging a Ladies/Junior day which hopefully will be a successful event for this season and in the future. Although it is early into my year as Lady Captain I have realised the amount of work needed to attempt to revive the ladies section of this famous and historic golf club. The Ladies section may be small but there is a high ranking official amongst us. Margaret Ashworth has been elected as the new Captain of the Manchester and District Society of Past Lady Captains. The society was formed in 1959 and includes more than 60 clubs and has 900 plus members. Margaret was quoted as saying that her mother bought her a set of hickory- shafted clubs for a magnificent sum of 6! in the early 1960 s. Her first game of golf was at Inch golf club in Perth and from then on she was hooked on the sport.

10 She applied for membership at our very own NMGC and had a very successful amateur career getting down to a handicap of 6. Margaret won the County veteran s championship, the Manchester and District President s Prize, the Dunhill Masters Gross championship at Mere and the Manchester and District past lady captains final, she has also won each of the Board competitions at NMGH and several at Sale GC. This year the Society will hold two competitions, one at Bramhall Park and the other at Fairfield. The winners and runners up will play in the final at NMGC later in the year Well Done Margaret
