2 Page 2 Presidents Report Alan Walker At the AGM on Wednesday night we did not have a nomination for treasurer. If there is someone who would be willing to take on the position your assistance would be very much appreciated. Give me a call and I will explain the position to you. At this stage we may not have an AYC representative. Again, if there is someone willing to devote about 14 nights a year it would be a big help to our club. We do need representation of our club on the AYC committee. The BBQ at Bunning s was allocated to us about 4 weeks ago. Thank you to Helen Souter for organising this event. It was a very enjoyable day as well as being financially successful. The advantage of this type of event is that we are not calling on club members to again put their hands in their pockets to support the club. I would in particular like to thank our Patron, Adrianna Taylor MLC for supporting the event by leaving her husband Beres to help out. Thank you Beres and I hope you enjoyed the day. It was very good of you to help out. Our club members who assisted were Lionel Souter, Pip Morrison, Michael Foster, Noreen and George Nus, Julie Clements. Thank you. Club Captains Report Helen Souter & John Fletcher Once again the Club Championships have failed to attract strong fields, and although we had allocated events to be run through the week, and finals on the weekend, the scheduling proved very difficult. This resulted in a heavy workload on Saturday in some events and the Mens Open final needing to be rescheduled. We will avoid this occurring in the future and will be looking for any ideas from members to attract more participation. We believe this event is not only important, but is enjoyed by the members that play in their respective events. Congratulations go to the following winners: Ladies Open Singles: Rachel Williamson Men s Open Singles: Harry Bickers Men s Open Doubles: Karl Gregory & Anker Fulgsang Ladies Handicap Doubles: Helen Souter & Robyn Grundy Mixed Handicap Doubles: Pip Morrison & Phil Cooper Matrimonial Doubles: Sarah & Steve Scattergood The annual grudge match with Geilston Bay was held in May, and for the third year running, the club was successful. Thanks to all that participated on the day, and the enthusiasm and good sportsmanship that was displayed. Results: Grade Glen GB BR 4 5 B 6 3 AR 6 3 A 3 3 Juniors: Section Section 2/3 0 6 Next year this event will be held at Geilston Bay and lets hope we can make it a four-peat! A special thank you to Debbie Evans for making herself available at the last minute and to Julie Fletcher for playing in the morning and in the afternoon. At the AGM, the awards for the most improved female and male players for this year were announced. The winner of Patricia Blacklow trophy is Helen Sarfalvy and the winner of the Temuana Staples Trophy is Derek Mellor.
3 Page 3 Annual General Meeting Thank you to those who attended our AGM. With the AGM over, this brings us up to a new year when subscriptions are once again due. Our fees have not changed from last year. Please find membership renewal forms attached for your convenience. Membership renewal is due on 1 July. Thanks everyone. Social Tennis With Winter pennant now running on Tuesday nights, social tennis will be trialled on Wednesday nights during June commencing on June 8 from 7pm with Pip. Pip is unavailable on Wednesday June 15, but back for June 22. Junior Report We hope Sally has been enjoying a well deserved holiday recently, so there is no Junior report this month. Elbow Straps Recently we obtained a limited number of elbow straps which we are making available to Club members. There is an assortment of sizes and can be purchased for $10 each. Please see John on Tuesday nights during Winter pennant, or give him a call on Day 35+ Day is to be held on Saturday July 10 at Glenorchy. For newcomers, this day is when a number of members of the 35+ association come to our Club to play tennis against one another and also members of our Club, no matter what age we are. On this day, the Club plays host to our guests. In hosting them, we provide soup and sandwiches for a light lunch. If anyone would like to assist us with soup, slices, produce (for sandwiches) or volunteer for the kitchen tasks, please place your name/s on the noticeboard in the Clubhouse or let a Committee member know. AYC Julie Fletcher Hopefully I m not the only person saying thank heavens the Autumn pennant is over! Some, however, may be thankful for different reasons to me as we ve had some winners. Congratulations to members of the following teams on their Grand Final wins: Div 9 Hepburn: John Clements, Jonathan Wallis, Brett Barwick, Julie Clements, Susie Furphy and Helen Sarfalvy. Div 11 Flynn: Lionel Souter, Phil Cooper, Oliver Gardner-Parker, Helen Souter, Julie Berry and Bec Ristrom Consistency Award Winners: Spring roster: Div 5: Ashley Evans Div 6: Noreen Nus Autumn roster: Div 6: Derek Mellor Div 9: Norma Hallam AYC Championships: Ladies Div 2: Elizabeth Wuttke & Sarah Scattergood Winter Pennant Winter Pennant has begun with a Beatles theme this season. Ladder, roster and emergencies are on the board. When you re not at the Club house, the roster can be viewed online from the following page: winter-pennant Quiz Night The Committee has now booked the Golden Years Club for Saturday July 30 for the Quiz night. We are seeking donations for the Silent Auction and a box is now located at the Clubhouse for this purpose. Our aim is for 50 items. Please start thinking about making a team from your work, friends or family.
4 Page 4 Player Profile Lionel Souter Although Phil Cooper played tennis and badminton at school for a short time he did not become a member of a tennis club until joining Glenorchy approximately 6 years ago. As Phil s daughter, Nichola, is married to Paul McPherson, a member of the well known Tasmanian tennis family, it naturally followed that Phil regained an interest in tennis. Paul, Nichola and their 2 children reside in Northwest Florida in the United States. Phil and Dianne visit every 2 years with the next holiday planned for June for a period of 6 weeks. Whilst in Florida, Phil joins a local community tennis club and plays there twice a week. Paul, who played tennis at a high level, gives Phil some intensive coaching lessons and the improvement in Phil s game is obvious. The community tennis club stage a mini Wimbledon while the real Wimbledon championships are being played and players must dress in white clothing and play with wooden rackets. The matches are played on the only grass court at the complex. The remaining courts are mainly clay and are of a green/grey colour. In the intervening years Phil and Dianne reciprocate and host their American visitors in Hobart. Phil was a proud member of the Glenorchy team that recently won the Div.11 A.Y.C. Pennant and the team celebrated in style with a team dinner at Phil and Dianne s beautiful property at Glenlusk Gardens. After living in the premises for approximately 30 years, Phil, (who is a third generation member of the family to live in the Glenorchy area), decided with Dianne, to convert the home to a Bed and Breakfast with amazing results. For the past 5 years they have hosted people from all over the world and their guest book contains glowing comments of the accommodation and the professionalism of the owners. At times Phil and Dianne will sit down to a meal prepared by their guests. The garden area is very popular in the Spring and Summer months with many wedding ceremonies being performed there. Apart from their business venture Phil and Dianne both work so they certainly lead a busy life. As a matter of interest Paul s brother, David, who held a world ranking as a doubles player, is the current coach of the No 1 doubles team in the world, the Bryan brothers. The next A.Y.C. season will commence shortly after Phil returns to Hobart. Thank you, Phil for your time and giving your fellow club members a glimpse of your very interesting life. Oh Dear! Karl, in a hurry was he? 11 kms over the limit he be! $120 fine (or was that $220?) and 2 demerit points Looking at visiting an alternative Court But a lucky day he had, With a guardian angel looking over him! Slow down Karl, the twins need you And Chantel is still waiting for a present with the money you saved from the fine. New Member A warm welcome is extended to Andrew Hills who has recently become a member. Reminder The AYC AGM is to be held Monday 20 th June at the Shoreline Hotel at 7.30pm. Next Meeting Our next committee meeting is on Sunday 17 th July 2011, 4pm at the Clubhouse.
