1 P a g e 1 News from the Clubhouse Welcome to the March 2017 Edition of the Club s Newsletter Did you know? March 20th is the first day of spring. March was named for the Roman god of war, Mars. This is the month when St. Patrick's Day is celebrated. So that s you all prepared for your next Pub Quiz! But what has been happening with our Club? Well there are a number of things and perhaps none more important than a change of management of our golf Course.

2 P a g e 2 COURSE MANAGEMENT Members may have heard that James Peace our Head Greenkeeper for some thirty years has resigned his position. This is a big change both for Jim and the Club. We wish to thank Jim for years of service to the Club and wish him well for the future. There is no time for delay in filling such an important position with the summer season looming large. Your Committee has therefore decided to act quickly and responsibly in filling such an important position. Mr Dale Robertson has recently served the Club well during periods of absence of his predecessor. He comes to us with a good reputation in green keeping and many years of successful experience. Your Committee has therefore decided to appoint Dale as Head Greenkeeper. We welcome Dale to the Club and invite your warm support in helping him carry out his duties. Dale is keen to develop things along with Forbes in an energetic, positive manner. However, we still need volunteers to help with regular raking of bunkers, moving tee markers, clearing dew off the greens and other similar duties. Training will be given for the more demanding tasks such as the moving of pin positions. Do let us know if you are willing to help.

3 P a g e 3 Support your Club by shopping here! You will be familiar with our request to support the club by shopping in the Golf Shop. But there is more to running the shop than selling goods. In fact, the Shop is one of the key ways we run the Golf Club!!! Staffing the shop is an on-going requirement. We need friendly faces to welcome our members and visitors and to deal with tee booking requests. The ideal is to have a rota of volunteers so that the burden can be shared out in a reasonable manner. If you can spare a few hours on a weekly or other basis let our Club Manager know. Training will be given and you can operate on a buddy system to begin with. So do let us know if you can help. CLUB FEES ALL FEES ARE NOW DUE IN! THANKS TO ALL MEMBERS WHO HAVE RESPONDED.

4 P a g e 4 PORTUGAL HERE WE COME! A seniors venture in the making! Three weeks from now a group of 16 Seniors will set off from Newburgh Golf Club on a golfing holiday to Vilamoura in Portugal. Bobby McClymont (see picture above and the graceful stroke yes, that s him!) has organised several of these trips and they have proved popular enough to see a rise in numbers wishing to take part. So we say to him MUITO OBRIGADO! (0therwise known as TA MUCH). So the venture begins! First, a shared car trip to Glasgow and an evening dinner at an Italian Restaurant. Then an Airport overnight stay in a Holiday Inn Express Hotel and off next morning to Faro Airport in the Algarve. This will be the seventh year in which the Seniors group will be represented on the long and lush golf courses of the Algarve. The worthy stalwarts this year are George Annand, Eric Barclay, Gordon Chalmers, Mike Collie, Gordon Coull, Norman Cox, Russell Crofts, Ian Cromarty, Don Hawthorn, Bobby McClymont, Bob Paterson, Dave Philip, Peter Scott, Ron Souter, John Stewart, and Bruce Stronach. There will be 18 holes to be played on six different courses in Stableford and Fourball formats set out by the group s Competition Manager, George Annand. He has already equipped himself with handicap records for each player and a digital algorithm to help him select daily playing groups. Competition will be fierce but friendly and soothed in the evening with dinner pre-drinks in a room still to be designated and results of the day duly announced. Dinner then follows. And so to bed!

BOM DIA! or even TCHAU! FOR NOW!!! NEW SHEDS We are presently investigating the provision of new Greens Sheds for our Greens staff. If you can help in any way please contact SHELLEY JOHNSTONE and/or any Committee member. CLUBHOUSE We have an excellent Clubhouse. But can it be used in a way that better helps support the Club financially and in other ways? If you have any ideas or suggestions on this please contact Committee member, RICHARD CHARLES. 6 P a g e 6 Fees for Junior Golf have been significantly reduced. This is to help to encourage new members - the future of our Club! We also need someone to bring on the youth with coaching. It s often a parent of a talented youth that can become involved. IS THAT YOU???
