EDITOR S NOTE September 2010 H E A T H E R M A C K A Y R O B E R T S Most years I m sad when the summer ends and the kids head back to school. The summer never seems to be long enough and you never quite get around to doing all those things you were sure you d get to this year. However, these past few months have been the summer of discontent when it comes to harness racing anyway. The precarious future of the Meadowlands is yet to be determined making everyone involved in the industry in New Jersey and beyond more than a little nervous. Racing s future in BC is uncertain at best at present and Alberta has finally gotten around to giving the folks who were supposed to build the new racetrack in Calgary several years ago an ultimatum that it must be completed over the next year. Meanwhile harness racing in that province is relegated to the hinterlands during the peak months as the Thoroughbreds occupy the only A track there. There is continuing and sometimes heated debate about Standardbred Canada s Sustainability Plan. While their efforts to actually do something to help the industry should be applauded, I think the lack of transparency in the plan (a precise breakdown of costs, who will be spearheading it, etc.) and the lack of support from the industry leaders to date won t allow it to move to the next level. Last week we had the news that three drivers, including Canada s leading pilot in terms of wins at the time and Canada s representative to the World Driving Championship last year, have been given lengthy suspensions by the Ontario Racing Commission for their roles in allegedly conspiring to fix races. That isn t the headline a flagging industry needs when it is desperately trying to hold onto the bettors, owners and fans it currently has. I was also dismayed to learn at our most recent Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society s board meeting that there have been a number of horses returned to OSAS after having been adopted, some many years ago. In rare cases there are extenuating circumstances that lead to a horse having to come back to OSAS but it is disconcerting that some are viewing the program as a rent a horse option. Take it and use it and return it when you re done. That was never the intention of OSAS, which expects the people who adopt the horses to provide a safe and loving environment for their horses for the duration of their lives. As a result, the program is currently filled to capacity. If any of you reading this have room for a companion horse, as many of these horses can t be ridden due to their age or soundness, please get in touch with OSAS. On a positive note, just last week The Harness Edge launched its sister magazine devoted to racing downunder which may be viewed through this link. We thank all of the wonderful advertisers and readers who have embraced this project and look forward to producing the next issue in the quarterly schedule. This issue of The Edge carries several great stories including one with Julianna Edwards by Nicole Kraft. The heartwarming tale is a reminder that in the midst of all the doom and gloom stories, there are truly some uplifting ones that make you glad to be a part of the sport. 10 Joy Julianna s JULIANNA EDWARDS took an unwanted trotting mare with several soundness issues and turned her into an open trotter. They did each other a world of good. By Nicole Kraft Photos by Curtis Salonick As Julianna Edwards made her way down the shedrows of the Arthur (Ill.) Sale Barn, amid the shrill whinny of horses and the steady chatter of the auctioneer s call, she was a woman at a crossroad. Edwards had, just months earlier, been released from her duties in the U.S. Army, and was working as caretaker for the horses of the New York State Police Mounted Unit near Saratoga Springs, New York. Days earlier she returned to her home state of Illinois to care for her ailing mother, and found herself wondering if there might be a companion for her in one of the barn s stalls, maybe something to occupy her mind and fill her spare time. As if guided by the hand the fate, Edwards turned the shedrow corner, and her breath was caught. The bay filly peered directly at her with bright eyes set across a wide, intelligent forehead. Named Khifra Hanover, she was one of few Standardbreds in the sale. Though she had been a failure as a racehorse and her coat was dirty, her legs were clean, and unlike some of the other, more deflated horses around her, she exuded life and the energy of youth.

JULIANNA S JOY Photo by Racehorse Photo Edwards started wondering if the filly might be raceable, and thought how fun it could be to compete with her. And as the auctioneers cries continued, Edwards thought also that not all these horses were going to homes where they would be fed and brushed and loved, and some of them were not going to homes at all. She could allow no such fate for this trotting-bred filly at her own crossroads, needing someone to care for her, as much as Edwards needed someone for which to care. For a final bid of $1,100 Edwards took home her filly. Little about their relationship should have worked, in the racing sense. All Edwards knew about Standardbreds was what she observed at the Illinois fair she visited as a youth, and what she overheard while visiting the Saratoga Harness tack shop for her police horse supplies. Khifra Hanover could not trot and failed racing on the pace, having earned just $2,636. The trainer Edwards initially found had her racing the mare here, there and everywhere, and in her travels Khifra Hanover suffered both a bowed tendon and a dropped suspensory. But the joining of the woman and mare was like a lock finding its key, unlocking the potential within them both. Edwards has earned her trainer s license and found a home in harness racing, with Khifra Hanover as her trotting star, setting multiple track records, and earning more than $160,000, while surviving injuries that would have crippled other horses. She means everything to me, said Edwards. I never thought I could own a horse like her. Khifra Hanover was born to be a good trotter. The problem When Julianna Edwards purchased Khifra Hanover at an Amish sale four years ago, she had no experience with Standardbreds. But she learned along with her mare who rewarded her faith in her by earning over $164,000 and setting two track records along the way. was, no one seems to have told her. Bred by the legendary Hanover Shoe Farms, she was from one of the last crops sired by 1995 freshman trotting champion Lindy Lane before his exportation to Sweden. Her dam, Canadian-bred Katelyns Glory, was all trot, a daughter of Dream Of Glory out of a Balanced Image mare. Since Khifra she s produced the $248,000 winning Tagliabue daughter Kandor Hanover. Khifra Hanover sold for $10,500 at the 2003 New Jersey Classic Sale, but she could not seem to manage the diagonal gait and was soon outfitted with hobbles. Not even they seemed to help her, as she managed just one win in 14 freshman starts. When she had earned just two cheques in five starts at three, it was clear Khifra Hanover was not going to make it as a racehorse, and she was sold to Marvin Miller, father of trainer Erv Miller and driver Andy Miller, to serve as an Amish buggy horse. Just two months later, Miller placed Khifra Hanover in the livestock auction he runs in Illinois, where Edwards took her home. Getting the horse proved to be the easy part. Edwards and trainer Justin Merton tried first to qualify Khifra Hanover April 10 at Balmoral on the pace, but she failed. September 2010 The Harness Edge

JULIANNA S JOY But they learned two things about the filly: She was a bleeder who needed to be put on Salix, and jogging without hobbles, she was all trot. I was training her on the trot one day at Bluegrass Downs, and as she went around the first turn she saw this other horse on second turn, said Edwards. When she saw him, her rear end went down, and she caught him, all on the trot. And she didn t hit anywhere. Inspired, Edwards and Merton qualified Khifra Hanover May 4 on the trot, and she won in 2:02.4, with her last quarter in 30 seconds. And a week later, from post eight, she went three-wide around the last turn at Bluegrass Downs and opened up two lengths to win in 2:04.2. I was surprised when she won her qualifier, but I was shocked when she won the race, Edwards said. I am thinking the whole way down the stretch, Keep it up, don t run! When she crossed the finish line I just jumped up and down and screamed. I was so proud of her. Khifra Hanover headed next to Plainridge Racecourse, where she finished fifth twice, before switching to Terry Culipher s Hoosier Park barn and winning in 1:58.2 on June 15, to Edwards' great joy. She was parked every step, but she kept chugging and chugging, she said. There was a gentleman in the winner s circle who wanted to walk her in, but I wouldn t let him. I wanted to be by my mare. After a six-week break, she was third at The Red Mile, but the mile proved costly, as she bowed a tendon. After giving her new owner so much joy, Khifra Hanover's racing career is now at an end. The eight-year-old LIndy Lane mare is from a Dream Of Glory mare bred by long time Canadian owner Harold Shipp. Edwards treated her mare with a Reducine blister and thought a change of scenery and different competition might help her. Inspired by a Cal-Expo bonus program for new owners, she and Merton took the filly to Sacramento. They also put her back on the pace, thinking it might be better for her sore leg. It is a move Edwards now regrets. I didn t treat that bow right, she said. She didn t have much time off at all. And she was not good on the pace again. I feel terrible about that. By January 2007, both the hobbles and the blister had come off, and Khifra Hanover was back to her old self. She reeled off three straight in Cal Expo conditioned trots, but the purses were too low for Edwards to make a living. She and Merton next took the mare to Saratoga, where she trotted to two wins in three starts, including a 1:58.1 effort in the Open. I couldn t believe she was in the open, and kept thinking, Is she really that nice? Edwards said. I figured she would show me, and she did. I was so nervous. I wasn t sure how fast she could go or how fast she would need to go. Khifra Hanover was again posted to the open trot when she moved to Plainridge Racecourse, and she soon she reeled off September 2010 The Harness Edge

JULIANNA S JOY That year was the best year of my life. A horse like that coming from my little Amish sale, it doesn t happen. She could do no wrong. back-to-back victories, the first in 1:57 and then in track-recordsetting 1:55.3 on May 29. She really impressed me, Edwards said. All my dreams came true. Never in my life did I expect it. And Khifra Hanover wasn t done. Two weeks later in the Tioga Downs Open Trot, she took the lead past the half and won by two lengths in an eye-popping 1:54.3, another track record. She then reeled off eight more wins in 18 starts, hopping from track to track up and down the East Coast, Vernon Downs, Monticello Raceway, Tioga, Pocono Downs, Rosecroft Raceway and Dover Downs, and earning $98,465 on the year. Never in my life did I expect it she would race like that, Edwards admitted. She turned into some freak of nature. That year was the best year of my life. A horse like that coming from my little Amish sale, it doesn t happen. She could do no wrong. The filly had inspired Edwards enough to take her trainer s test in 2008, and the pair made their first start together on January 9, finishing sixth, But Khifra Hanover started struggling, and Edwards knew she still needed some guidance. She moved her trotter to the barn of Kevin Sizer. The pair made three qualifying starts before heading to the Pocono open in April. She had some physical problems that we just couldn t identify, but they were bothering her, said Sizer. Khifra Hanover was indeed not the horse she had been, managing only to earn a few cheques. After she made a break and finished ninth on June 3, she suffered a pulled left hind suspensory and tendon tear. Her career, and Edwards dreams, appeared to be over. The vets told me couldn t even breed her, she said. She couldn t even carry a foal with that leg. Edwards had some options, but none of them seemed good. She could retire the mare and let her rest, or she was offered $15,000 to sell Khifra Hanover as a future broodmare prospect. But the only thing she really wanted to do with was compete. Every time I had an offer to sell her, I just couldn t do it, Edwards said. She was my mare, and the biggest adrenaline rush ever was watching my mare race. Everyone loved her. Kevin let her be the barn mascot while we figured out what to do. Edwards pursued tendon injections for her mare with limited success, before seeking out a treatment that involved weaving a silver mesh around the suspensory to support it during healing. A week after the $1,000 treatment, Khifra Hanover was jogging and within a month she was training. I didn t want to say she was going to make it, but I kept hoping, Edwards said. If she didn t I would breed her, but I just wanted to win one more race. And Edwards dream again came true. After qualifying at Pocono October 15, 2009, Khifra Hanover slowly raced back to form. Moved to Florida for the winter, Khifra Hanover and Sizer won her first race of 2010 on February 8, and won four of her next five races. Although she struggled a bit back in the Pocono Open Trot company, she found the winner s circle three more times over the spring and summer. She is just a great horse, said Sizer, with admiration. As she grew up she really blossomed. She has an amazing will to win. Khifra Hanover was curtailed at the end of July by a cut on her leg after throwing a shoe and making a break July 27 at Pocono. It would ultimately prove to be her final career start. At the time she was better than she d ever been, but her racing days are over now, Edwards said. I thank God every day for her. Anybody who knows me knows that she is like a child to me. She is the reason I get up every day. This is not an easy business. She makes every day worth it. September 2010 The Harness Edge
