President s Report By Rosemary Higgins The live racing season is well under way and I would like to welcome everyone back to Canterbury Park for the 2016 season! I would also like to welcome the folks that are here for the first time, enjoying our beautiful track and Minnesota hospitality. Many MQHRA sponsored activities have already taken place this month. 4H Boot Camp was on June 14 th, Youth Day at the Races was June 25 th and the Leg Up for Jockey Fundraiser was on June 26 th. You can read more about these events in the newsletter. Upcoming dates to look forward to are July 10 th for the Quarter Horse Celebration Party and July 31 st is the Backside BBQ. There will be six Quarter Horse races on July 10 th. The three featured races are the Minnesota Stallion Breeders Futurity, the Canterbury Park Derby and the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity. The LARGEST EVER Quarter Horse Purse of $165,000 will be awarded in the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity. As a member of MQHRA, you should have received an invitation to the Quarter Horse Celebration that will take place in the Triple Crown Room on the clubhouse level of Canterbury Park that day. I hope you can join us as we present the 2015 Year End Awards and enjoy a great day of Quarter Horse racing. See you at the track! 5 MQHRA Youth Day at the Races MQHRA Youth Day at the Races was held on Saturday, June 25th. There were nine youth in attendance. Doug Steiskal and Jim Murray shared their knowledge throughout the day as they toured both the back and front sides of Canterbury Park. After a full day of behindthe scenes activities, they were given a written test to determine who would receive the scholarship money. The top test score resulted in a tie between Joshua Johnson from Boyd, MN and Katie Orth from Randall, MN. They will both receive a $500 scholarship. Congratulations to both of them. 4H Boot Camp Picture from left to right Ashlin, Allison, Katie, Kennedy, Emily, Joshua, Morgan, Kristen and Katie. MQHRA was a sponsor of 4H Boot-Camp again this year. This is the fourth year that we have provided a pork chop feed for approximately 200 people which included the campers, clinicians and their parents. A big THANK YOU goes out to MQHRA members and grill masters Julie and Bob Petersen. Despite the pouring rain, they had the meat ready by 6 PM for the hungry campers. Later that evening, Jamie Pribyl, DVM spent about 1 1/2 hours talking with the youth about basic horse care and fielding questions about QH Racing. She also had visual aids and showed them a horse s skull and an enterolith that had been removed from a horse in her practice. Then she did a demonstration on the correct way to wrap a horse s leg. The 4 H members had lots of questions for Jamie and they were rewarded for both their questions and answers with prizes that we offered. We handed out MQHRA water bottles, Farm Girl caps and sweatshirts, t-shirts and bags of grain. AQHA also provided us with back issues of America's Horse magazine as well as informational brochures and trinkets to hand out. Cindy Besser and Rosemary Higgins were the other two MQHRA members that spent the day with 4H group, helped with the meal and provided the prizes. A great time was had by all!
