IN LOVING MEMORY A stalwart fixture in the SoCal Peruvian Paso community, Frank Heffley was proud to have served in the US Army, 23rd Infantry, Alaska Ski Corps. He was a devoted husband who loved fishing, family and pets, and tirelessly supporting his beloved Rosie's volunteer work for Fiesta of the Spanish Horse. Frank passed away in August, 2018, and his gentle presence will be greatly missed. Please note: Dressage classes may not be run in listed class order. Our dear friend Nancy Nathanson was renowned in the equestrian show world, garnering many top honors by USEF. A highly respected multi-breed secretary, she was also the long-time Director of IFSHA, an IALHA and Cal Show board member, trainer and breeder of Andalusians, former health care administrator, and a staunch supporter of cancer research. She inspired us with her passion, knowledge and indefatigable spirit. In August, 2018, she lost a hard-fought battle with cancer. Nancy will be deeply missed. 17

20 Mustang / CSH HALTER CLASSES Both conformation and gait shall be judged in these classes. Transmissible faults shall be counted heavily against. A horse must be serviceably sound to be considered for placement. These classes shall be judged 60% on conformation, 30% on quality and naturalness of gait, and 10% on appearance, grooming, and manners. 1. Entries of any age shall be shown with a halter and single lead line. No attendants other than those actually holding the line are allowed. Lines may end in a smooth link chain, which may be crossed over the nose and/or under the jaw. In the lineup, the horse must stand square and remain quiet without undue restraint. A horse will be shown in a halter without a bit. The halter will be English, Western or Breed style. A lead line is required. A riding crop or whip may be carried. No other devices may be used. Handlers should be attired in the show costume of their choice that complements the tack of the horse. 2. Horses should be shown in a natural state without colored hoof polish or colored body polishes, clear polishes are acceptable. Trimming of excessive hair or braiding is not required, but may be done per individual breed standards or preferences. 3. Horses shall be shown at the walk and trot, entering the ring one at a time in the order that show management designates. The horses shall proceed instructed by the Ringmaster, they will then line up in the center of the ring for conformation inspection. Quality of gait in reflection to breed standard, smoothness, harmony of cadence, and naturalness, with consistency, and absence of undue restraint, will be judged. Additional work-offs may be required at the Judge s discretion. Mustang / CSH RIDING CLASSES 206 / 207 ENGLISH PLEASURE: The English Pleasure Horse will be shown at the walk, trot and/or canter both ways of the ring. It should be a calm, mild-mannered, safe, using pleasure horse maintaining balance, ease and freedom of movement. It is imperative that the horse give the distinct appearance of being a pleasure to ride with emphasis on manners, the gaits and smooth transitions. Horses indicating aggressiveness, over-collection or excessive animation shall be severely penalized. 208 ENGLISH HACK: A Hack is a horse of good disposition and calm manner used to ride over roads and trails. It must at all times work on a light rein without resistance, although it should be athletic, may be energetic, and should combine style and spirit. Of particular importance is that it must at all times demonstrate a calm and extremely tractable attitude. Horses will be shown at the walk, trot, extended trot, canter and hand gallop in both directions. At judge s discretion, riders may also be asked to halt from any gait, stand on a loose rein, back-up, reverse at any gait and/or other movements , 216 WESTERN PLEASURE / RIDING: The horse should move in a working horse image, while still retaining the air of pride and grace that is typical of the individual strain. In all gaits, the horse must be smooth and responsive, both horse and rider should appear comfortable and relaxed. The horse should maintain his speed and cadence without restraint by the rider, working at all times on a very light rein without resistance. It must stand quietly and back readily when requested. Horses indicating aggressiveness, over-collection or excessive animation shall be severely penalized. 213 WORKING RANCH MANEUVERS: This is a judge s command group rail class. Failure to properly execute the correct movement at the judge s request will be penalized. A calm, versatile working horse maintaining balance, ease and freedom of movement; which is absolutely agreeable to the commands and directions of the rider and demonstrating flawless manners will be the judging criteria. It is imperative that the horse give the distinct appearance of having the ability to get a job done with emphasis on the gaits, smooth transitions and ability to cover rough terrain. The horse will be asked to demonstrate coordination and manners while performing the various gaits and maneuvers. The required maneuvers are walk, jog, lope both directions with extended jog and canter in at least one direction, as well as stops and extended back up. The judge also may require any of the following optional maneuvers, including: sidepass, 360 turn, circle, turn on the forehand, turn on the haunches. Figure eight at the lope on the correct lead (demonstrating a simple or flying change of lead) or other movements. The tack and attire are to be of working western style TRAIL: This will be an individual pattern class which is designed to show the horse's willingness to perform tasks that might be asked of it during the course of a day s ranch work; which is the heritage of all Colonial Spanish Horses and Mustangs. A horse that performs the course with precision in the correct gait/lead and with an alert attitude will receive higher scores. Course may include: all gaits, gait transitions, halt, back, lateral moves, gate, bridge, step-overs, and/or other movements/obstacles. USDF Statement on Animal Welfare The United States Dressage Federation, Inc. (USDF), a federation of over 100 independent organizations throughout the United States with a membership of nearly 30,000 members, supports the concept of ethical treatment of animals. Dressage is a classical method of training horses, based upon the horse s natural responses, as carried out in a gradual, planned program during which the horse s athletic abilities are improved in a systematic manner. As a result, the horse becomes capable, comfortable, and responsive in partnership with the rider without the use of force. Dressage competition at various levels of achievement is the ultimate test of the training program to determine whether the desired harmony between horse and rider has been achieved. The rules pertaining to dressage competition prohibit the use of artificial appliances, training aids, and drugs, which would force the horse to submit. Instead, the emphasis is upon training and a cooperative partnership with the rider. Major competitions are carefully monitored to assure that there is no unnecessary force or harshness displayed. Unlike other horse sports in which horses enter training at a relatively immature state, dressage training is usually not seriously begun until the horse is three or four. The top levels of achievement require five or more years of progressive training and it is not unusual to see horses in international competition in their late teens. This, in itself, places a premium on good care and soundness throughout the horse s life. While supporting the concept of animal welfare in its broadest form, the United States Dressage Federation, Inc., also recognizes that it is unrealistic to ascribe human emotions and responses to the horse which in its wild state is a creature of flight, living a hard and precarious existence. Under domestication, the horse is assured of ample food, water, and shelter, as well as protection against infectious diseases and damaging parasites, thus leading a longer and healthier life with a high rate of survival. As an educational organization, USDF has numerous programs, which teach people how to pursue the accepted, humane training methods. A program of certifying instructors also emphasizes protecting the horse s welfare in pursuit of dressage training.
