As an organization concerned with equine welfare, SHA is sponsoring the first of what we hope will be an annual educational opportunity for horse owners or those considering equine ownership. In addition to Dr. Christensen, we will have professionals available at stations on hoof care, feed and nutrition, chiropractic, grooming, training and safe horse handling. Plus, lunch is free. 2 Horses Help Children Learn to Read Many of the first graders at Desert Vista Elementary were able to touch a horse for the first time on February 4 thanks to the Black Stallion Literacy Project, Superstition Horsemen's Association, and the Arizona Horse Council. The project is part of a nationwide effort to encourage children to read. This is its eighth year in the Apache Junction School District. Desert Vista Elementary was the first school in Arizona to adopt this first grade program into their curriculum. According to Walter (Chip) Wilson, Vice-president of the Arizona Horse Council, each year about 100 first graders at Desert Vista receive Walter Farley's Little Black, A Pony book that is used in this reading program. "In the East Valley we have five schools involved, which allows over 300 children to participate in both phases of the project," said Mr. Wilson. During First Touch, representatives of the Superstition Horsemen's Association and Arizona Horse Council bring horses to the schools for children to learn about and to touch a horse. Chip and Peggy Wilson bring two of their horses for the children. One is Shadow, a black miniature pony who looks just like Little Black in the storybook. The other is Rico, a tall red horse who looks just like another character in the book, Big Red. Copies of Little Black are distributed to the children and the book is theirs to keep. During Second Touch, which will take place at the Apache Junction Rodeo Grounds on April 16, elementary school children arrive in big yellow school buses. Each group is at first entertained by riders demonstrating their skills in the arena. Then, single file, the children visit each of the horse information stations on the grounds. Included are talks about horse care and grooming, horse tack, nutrition and feed. Each child is given an opportunity to read their favorite part of Little Black to a live horse. The children sit on saddles that are placed on hay bales. The horses patiently listen to them read. Volunteers for the April 16 Second Touch are needed. For more information contact Chip Wilson at

Allison Strathearn and Judy Hood accepted the award on behalf of SHA. Work is underway for SHA's Lost Dutchman Days activities. SHA will have a booth all three days - Feb 26, 27 and 28. Membership and the SHA store need volunteers to sit at the booth. Our signs say "donations" for the water, soda and other items. Competitive Trail Ride Committee: Eric Messina suggested SHA contact an organization called the American Competitive Trail Horse Association whose website is The ACTHA handles ride advertising and sign up. Local club volunteers help run the ride and can charge for the lunch offered at the ride. The board agreed for Eric to contact the organization. Political Committee: Bev Hansen reported that Maricopa County is taking a local horseman to court regarding port-a-stalls and shades. The county ruling is that any additions to a stable or ranch worth more than $1000 need a permit. The permit could cost more than the stalls. Treasurers Report: Income of $566.00, Expenses of $1, with $1, in the checking account and $1, in the savings account for a total of $3, Membership Report: 101 renewals, 35 new memberships for a total of 136 memberships and 240 members. Judy wanted to remind everyone that membership is for a whole year. After six months has passed, new members can pay half price for the remainder of the year. Ed will look into raising money from local businesses to cover costs for the Rodeo Ground Free Nights this summer from May to August. Last year it cost SHA around $500 to have Thursday nights for open riding at the rodeo grounds. Horse Health Clinic: Will be held on March 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the rodeo grounds. It was decided to provide a lunch of hamburger, chips and soda. No vendors will be present. The Poker Ride will be held on April 3. The activity committee will take care of the barbeque/lunch. 3

The mountain panorama accompanied us as we traveled the scenic route through majestic saguaros (and occasionally cholla forests). We rode for a couple of hours and then stopped for a trail lunch.

Twelve riders gathered at the Cloudview Trailhead and rode off into the rolling desert foothills at the base of the Superstitions. The mountain panorama accompanied us as we traveled the scenic route through majestic saguaros (and occasionally cholla forests). We rode for a couple of hours and then stopped for a trail lunch. On the way back we got to see everything again from a different perspective. The Cloudview Trailhead is becoming quite popular as we just barely had room for our trailers. We realized it may now be too busy for group rides on the weekends. Saturday, March 20, we'll ride at San Tan Regional Park. This is a pretty area of foothills and washes, with mostly sandy footing, nestled in some small mountains. Since it's now a park, there is a fee of $6 per vehicle. To get there, drive south of Hwy 60 on Ellsworth, through Queen Creek, until Ellsworth curves east onto Hunt Highway. The next light will be Thompson Rd. Turn right and drive another mile to the stop sign at Phillips. Turn right and drive to the park. The ride will leave at 10:00 a.m. Bring along a trail lunch and water, and a snack, drink and a chair for a social hour after the ride. Any questions? Call Barb ( ) or Diane ( ).
