On behalf of the Alabama Trappers & Predator Control Association, I'd like to welcome everyone to the 13th Annual NTA Southeast Regional Trapping and Outdoor Expo. The Alabama Trappers & Predator Control Association members and the National Trappers Association have worked very hard to bring this event to Alabama. I'd like to thank the NTA, as well as the ATPCA volunteers, sponsors, vendors, tailgaters, and other volunteers and their families for all their time and hard work to make this a success. I'd also like to extend a special thanks to Mike Sweat, Director of the North East Agri-Business Center in Rainsville for allowing the ATPCA and NTA to hold this event in their facility in beautiful northeast Alabama. Everyone that attends has an opportunity to see some of the best trappers from across the United States that have come to share their expertise with you. There are many vendors to provide you with your trapping, hunting and fishing needs, as well as a variety of other items for the ladies such as rustic jewelry and crafts. There will be plenty of food, fun and family activities. Thank you for coming and supporting our state association as well as the National Trappers Association. 14 John Daniel John was born in Southeast Tennessee which is where he has resided for his entire 54 years! He has 4 children and 10 Grandchildren. John is currently Vice President of the National Trappers Association and President of FurBearers Unlimited, as well as past President of Tennessee Fur Harvesters. Of his many accomplishments, some that he is most proud of is: The establishment of the Hiwassee Trappers Training Camp Improved relationships between the trappers of Tennessee and Tennessee s Wildlife Resources Agency Being a major contributor to the improvements in his state s trapping laws For 9 plus years he has been a representative of trappers throughout the nation through the various offices he has held in the NTA and FBU John is a seasoned trapper with 42 years of experience which includes most species of both land and water fur bearers with knowledge obtained from having trapped in many different states. Of all the fur bearers, Mink remains his favorite This past season John obtained a lifetime trapping accomplishment of catching 2 otter in 1 trap!

Chip Davis Chip Davis is from north central Mississippi and fell in love with trapping as a teenager in the mid 1980 s. A family friend who asked permission to trap on Chip s family s farm took him under the wing and taught Chip how to read sign, set traps, and the basics of fur trapping. Chip took all of his profits from that first fur check and bought his own traps, and has never looked back. He continued to fur trap through high school and college and even after graduating from Mississippi State University in the early 1990 s. Soon, however, the fur crash of the 1990 s and the challenges of building a production agriculture farm and raising a family, curtailed the trapping for a few short years. In the early 2000 s Chips oldest son saw a bundle of traps hanging patiently in the barn and asked his dad, Can we try that trapping like you used to do when you were younger? That question, asked by and 8 year old kid, rekindled the spark that had been laying, smoldering, for far too many years, and Chip dug out his old equipment, and started trapping anew. Chip and his son initially rekindled their trapping career by fur trapping, but quickly shifted gears to live market coyotes, and that is where Chip s passion lies today, typically running long lines of live market coyotes sets in MS and several other states. Being a farm boy by raising, the skills of welding, grinding, bending, and generally any type of metal work was a necessary skill and this talent married well into the trap modifications. Chip and his son began building oversized trap pans for their own traps as they had seen others in the trapping industry talking about and the modifications quickly caught on and Expand-A-Pan was born.

Allen Deese I graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery AL, with a Bachelors in Marketing in After graduation, I ran a full-scale Alligator farm in South Montgomery that included raising and processing alligators for the commercial skin and meat market. I also trapped beavers for several lumber companies and executed dynamite demolition of beaver dams and huts to restore the land, streams and creeks back to its original flow. After 10 years in the gator farming industry and strict regulations on dynamite after 9/11, I decided it was time to move on. So instead of trapping animals that were eating trees, I decided to grow trees to feed animals. The Wildlife Group was created prior to my arrival and handed off to me in 2001 to market and expand the nursery. I currently have 17 years of tree growing experience under my belt and a plethora of life lessons in my past. Growing trees and enhancing wildlife habitat has become my passion. Marty Harmon Marty Harmon has been trapping for over 40 years, mostly in Mississippi. He s trapped in MS. AR. and TN. He usually traps the nuisance animals beaver and coyotes.

James Lord James Lord started trapping in the early 1980's in Oklahoma near the end of the fur boom. He started out trapping raccoons and possums with the occasional mink or beaver being caught in his traps. James has trapped in 10 different states but calls Tennessee his home. Today, after several years of learning the hard way, he is an Accomplished, well rounded trapper doing some control work for farmers and hunting clubs. His passion though, is trapping bobcats and otter. James has multiple DVDs on the market covering several species. He enjoys teaching our great heritage to kids and adults at training camps in Tennessee. The Tennessee Fur Harvesters Association recently inducted James into the Hall of Fame. He served in office for the state association for 8 years and is currently the President. Jeff J Mangus Jeff is a retired fur buyer with 30 plus years experience dealing with furs, hides, buying and selling roots and especially anything dealing with turtles. Jeff is currently running the Traveling Trappers as a way to educate the next generation.

Shawn Phillips Shawn is the owner of West Alabama Wildlife Removal and co-owner of Down South Trappers. Steve Phillips son was introduced into trapping at 4 years old. Shawn is an owner of a predator management company, along with beaver and otter control. The scope of work ranges from predator management to removing coyotes from Alabama s largest cities using foothold restraints. Shawn also writes for several publications on predator management techniques. Co-owner of Down South Trappers, which along with being a bait and lure company, their main objective is education about benefits of predator management and the effects it has on native game species. South s finest game management will always be achieved through management of the predators. Steve Phillips Owner of West Alabama Wildlife Nuisance Control and co-owner of Down South Trappers. Steve has been trapping since 1972, never missed a season, and has been a full time Predator control trapper, along with beaver and otter work for the last 15 years under West Alabama Wildlife Nuisance Removal. Covering 5 counties, in western part of Alabama, managing some of the premier game properties the state has to offer.board Member of the Alabama Trappers and Predator Control Association, along with the National Trappers Association member for the majority of his trapping career. Steve is also part owner of Down South Trappers, a bait and lure company that offers educational media.

Tim Roper Tim has been trapping for over 20 years and focuses heavily on beaver trapping. He is a member of the Alabama Trappers and Predator Control Association, the Mississippi Trappers Association, the West Tennessee Fur Takers and the National Trappers Association. Tim operated a popular YouTube channel, The MeatTrapper with over 18,000 subscribers and over 30 instructional videos. Tim s goal is to broaden trappings appeal and support by reaching out to nontraditional populations such as survivalists, bush crafters and others by explaining that trapping is not just about fur, but about responsible wildlife management, self sufficient food sources and solving invasive species problems humanely and responsibly. Hal Sullivan I have over 55 years of experience on the trapline. I am the "Trapline" editor for Fur-Fish-Game, and a field editor for The Trapper & Predator Caller. I have written over 500 "How-To" articles on trapping and more than 270 humor pieces. I have also written 6 books on trapping and produced 6 trapping videos. I am a life member of NTA, FTA, and NRA.

Ronnie L Vincent I first started trapping and decided to develop my skill for trapping at 9 years old when I had found a trap in a stream and fell in love with it. I went and bought a few more traps and that first year I had caught 3 opossums. A few more years went by as I was learning my skill, then at only 15 years old I had managed to trap 5 fox, 40 opossums, and 24 raccoons. My dad laughed and said I had sold more fur that year than he had paid on our farm. In 1987 I took a trip to the NTA in Mansfield Ohio and ended up spending $ in supplies. I knew then that I would do all that I could to make my love for trapping into a profession. It didn t happen overnight, with hard work and perseverance, I could see my dream taking shape. With each job I completed I added more supplies, more traps, and more training to my craft. After many years I have expanded my business and now have over $100,000 in supplies. We have three trucks that are always ready to go at a phone call from a client. I have trapped 9 states for Nuisance problems and have trapped everything that I have wanted to trap. I ve trapped Bear, wild hogs, Alligators, and so many other types of animals that each state has to offer. I actually caught my first wolf in KY just a few years back which is really fascinating because that isn t a typical nuisance back home. There s been times that I ve had to run a nine man crew to keep up with the business coming in. We trap year round helping homes, schools, and places of business. I have worked hard, and at 57 years old my love for trapping is just as strong as it was when I first found that old trap in that stream.

FURBEARERS UNLIMITED Would like to acknowledge and sincerely THANK our sponsors who have contributed to help make this event A HUGE SUCCESS! Your support is an integral part of who we are!

Robert Louis Stevenson once said Don t judge each day by the harvest that you reap, but by the seeds that you sew. Never in my life have I found a group of people who LIVE by this statement more than our trapping community. In a trapper s life you spend each day getting ready for the next season to maintain balance in the environment, you are necessary. You are exposed to the worst Mother Nature has to offer, and often injury or illness is just an inconvenience a bump on the dirt road you know so well. Yet, there you are getting ready to head out of the warm door into the wet, cold (or hot) outdoors. Not knowing what the day has in store, but excited to find out! Then the convention season starts, and you are even more dedicated to planting those seeds teaching our younger trappers the secrets and joys of such an exciting hobby! You are tireless in your efforts to get the children away from a game screen, and witness the game screen of God s great earth. Thank-you is not enough, but the joy on the face of a child seems to be all you need to dedicate yourself and your resources - to another convention another demo another exhausting day As many do, I stand in awe of all of you seed sewing educators, harvesters and guardians of trapping! Stand and take a bow Mike and Vicki Sievering, Toby Hutchinson vendors, volunteers and all unnamed helpers! Thanks to you all, this will be a great convention! Vickie Wright, NTA Convention Coordinator

Davy Crockett, David Stern Crockett was a frontiersman, politician, and soldier, born August 17, Crockett ran away from home as a youth and grew up as a hunter, trapper and woodsman in the Tennessee mountains. Davy joined the Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Riflemen in 1813 and fought in the Creek War under Andrew Jackson. He was later elected to the position of lieutenant colonel in the Tennessee Militia. In 1826, Crockett was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served another two terms until Crockett made himself known as a grand public speaker and writer, even though he had no formal education. After being voted out in 1834, Crockett made his way to Texas to explore settlement opportunities. He and his party were at the Alamo when General Santa Anna arrived with the Mexican Army and placed the Alamo under siege. According to accounts, Crockett fought valiantly before being killed in the battle.
