The Board is suspending the acceptance of new members while it revises and updates the procedures for inducting new members. Joining us at the August meeting will be Fred Carper of Carper Custom Gunsmith in Washington. Fred handles offers metal finishing, stock work, and custom alterations His topic for the meeting will be long-range precision shooting. A snack of pulled pork, salad, and dessert will follow. Hunters looking to participate in this year s Pennsylvania elk season have until Aug. 26 to submit an application through the Pennsylvania Game Commission s Pennsylvania Automated License System (PALS). Details on the elk season and drawing are available on pages of the Pennsylvania Hunting and Trapping Digest, or the PGC Website. While waiting for the rain to stop, Allan Jaworski reviewed Zach Willard s technique using one of the new AR-15s purchased for our Junior Program through with NRA grant funding. The rain didn t stop and Zach didn t get to live-fire the rifle. Torrential rain and bolts of lightning caused the cancelling the outdoor portion of the July meeting. As a result, our junior shooters didn t get the opportunity to fire the new AR-15 rifles purchased for the Junior Program. Maybe we can try again later. DMSC Conducts Safety Reviews Board appointed Range Safety Officers (RSOs) will conduct a random series of membership checks and safety reviews. RSOs will meet with members and guests while at the firing range. Each member will be given a green safety card with important safety information to review, membership ID s will be checked, a green sticker will be affixed to the membership card, and a copy of the range rules will be made available. It s important for all members to review safe gun handling procedures and to focus on the safety rules for each range used. The RSOs will be a wearing a distinctive safety vest and hat and will only ask for a few minutes of your time. SHORT SHOTS continued on Page 2! DON T FORGET THE WORK PARTY ON SEPTEMBER 15!

2 2 SHORT SHOTS from Page 1 September 3, Labor Day, is a Fish-for- Free Day when anyone (resident or nonresident) can legally fish with NO FISH- ING LICENSE REQUIRED on all Pennsylvania's waterways on the designated days. All other fishing regulations still apply. The last two pages of this issue contain information relating to fundraising sporting clay event at Nemacolin on October 6. The proceeds go to the Trooper Kenton Iwaniec Memorial Foundation. Four years ago, PA State Trooper Iwaniec was killed in a head-on vehicle collision by a driver traveling over 70 mph at night without headlights and with 4 1/2 times the legal limit of alcohol plus narcotics in her bloodstream. The Foundation uses the money to purchase portable breath-testing devices and, to date, has issued 168 units to state and local police stations. The 2012 Mon-Valley Friends of NRA Dinner and Auction is Saturday, September 8. Get your $35 for a banquet ticket to Chuck Augenstein by August 23 and you will get a double amount of raffle tickets for every $50 worth you buy. CMP JUNIOR RIFLE PROGRAM TO RESUME IN SEPTEMBER The Junior Rifle Program is scheduled to resume on September 18. This starts with a 7-week instructional class emphasizing safety and marksmanship basics for new shooters. Additional coaching and practice available every Tuesday night through March after the 7 week class concludes. Some main points of the program: Focus is on juniors (suggested minimum age of 12) Adult shooters wishing to improve skills can also participate (class size permitting) You don t have to be a club member to take this course NRA Certified Instructors lead the program Charge of $10 (TOTAL) for 7 week class----includes instruction book, ammo, target rifles, and all needed equipment Call Miles Ford ( ) or Chuck Augenstein ( ) for additional information and registration. DAMMED IF YOU DO...DAMMED IF YOU DON T The $2 million PA Fish and Boat Commission-funded project to stabilize the unsafe dam at Canonsburg Lake has been completed. Now that the dam is safe, work will begin on dredging out the muck that has lowered the water depth to seven feet in some places. To that end, the Canonsburg Lake Restoration and Improvement Committee received $150,000 from the local share account that disburses revenue from The Meadows Racetrack & Casino. So don t feel bad if you lose at the casino --you re helping to improve Canonsburg Lake. Additionally, the PFBC held a public meeting on August 8 in Claysville to give an update on the reconstruction of Dutch Fork Lake. The main work has been completed and the lake will be refilled in stages over a two-year period. Some were concerned that the lake should be dredged first. There was greater concern about the announcement that the PFBC entered into a 5-year, $2,236,680 lease with Range Resources for natural gas drilling under the lake with the money going into a fund for repairing high-hazard, unsafe dams. There was a worry about he environmental impact, even though drilling rigs will be on private land.

The program runs every Tuesday night from 7:00-10:00PM, weather permitting. For information, call Doug Gawronski at SHOOTING HOURS CHANGE Board member Chuck Augenstein came up with a good idea. Chuck suggested the Club adapt to the availability of daylight during the long days of summer and increase shooting opportunities by changing range shooting hours every two weeks. This concept is based on the continual change in times for hunting hours as shown in the PGC handbook, The new hours will be posted on the bulletin board outside the clubhouse and shown on the signage at each range. We don t usually track doe licenses this early, but the early activity around Erie- Warren-Clearfield corridor prompted this status report. 6 6 LORD WILLIN AND THE CREEK DON T RISE JULY WORK PARTY Well, the creek rose. But that didn t stop over two dozen volunteers to come out for the July work party. Early on, as the workers signed in, the garage was the hub of activity for sanding and painting pistol range target holders, cutting backer boards, and constructing benches. When the rain let up, the work crew broke up into teams to take on the rebuild the tie walls on the pistol range, do some heavy duty tree and brush clearing on the lower archery range, and get rid of six months of grime. The list of volunteers and more pictures are on the next page.

As you can see by the rifles that everyone used we had quite a variety of older rifles. So next antique match bring that old rifle out and join the fun. Great shooting for all of the participants. It was another fun day at the range. This special event helped to hone the shooting skills for all that intend on participating at the National Matches by duplicating the distance, course of fire, and pace that will be encountered. Indeed a good day it was! Top honors went to Allan Jaworski with a 276-3x; this score only edged out Jim Madar by 2x s. Also scoring in the 270 range were Ted Hildabrand and Ray Nist. At the upcoming National Matches the following scores will earn medals: Gold 281+, Silver , Bronze Nice shooting to all participants!
