1 2017 Second Quarter Newsletter Darby Rough Regulators 3239 W. Old Lockhart Rd, West Point, TX And Now a Word from our President. Home on the Range Building is coming along on our new outhouse. We now have a floor!! Since there is no privacy in the privy without walls, building the walls and ceiling joists are next on the construction schedule. It s a slow process for us, but we will be working diligently to get the next phase completed. Come out to have some fun and help with range maintenance on June 17 th at 8:00am. Board of Directors The Board of Directors remains as listed to the right of the page. Our By-Laws state two to three Directors at Large may sit on the Board. Currently, we have two. If anyone is interested in filling that third spot, we welcome you to join us. In fact, we welcome anyone to join our Board Meetings as they are open to all members to attend. We meet on the fourth (4 th ) Thursday of every month at the Schaatt residence and meetings start at 5:30pm. If you are interested in the third Director at Large Position or would like to attend a meeting, please contact any of our Board members. You can pop-in on us, but we do eat dinner while conducting our meeting and want to be sure to have enough for everyone. An contact is provided on our website. 3 Range Officer Report Cutting out the Lead Darby Rough Regulators strives to keep the lead splatter down to a minimum. Minnetex Slim designed a bracket that holds our pistol and rifle targets at a downward angle. His design has reduced splatter tremendously. BUT.we still haven t gotten rid of it yet. Bunk Stagner has developed a new pistol target stand that will continue our goal of cutting out the lead. We have some prototypes in place on Stage 1 Woods Fort. Please give us your feedback on these new pistol target stands. We have material to make more and encourage you to give us your feedback on how they perform. Now if we could just figure out how to redesign the shotgun targets, lead splatter might be a thing of the past. Like Clockwork These past few months, we have had small and large posses. I would like to thank everyone for pitching in to keep their posse moving down the stage line. Sounds corny, but teamwork makes the dream work. Keeping the posses moving forward toward the next stage makes the match fun. I write a lot of the scenarios and I am always excited to see how I ll fare at the next stage challenge. We had 22 shooters at our May match. The two posses really did a tremendous job of filling all the positions while making it so that shooters could get their guns loaded. In fact, we were so efficient that our six stage match concluded by 11:30am. Most everyone had their lunch eaten and the range was broken down by 12:30 1pm. Thank you thank you. Keep Your Cool It s getting hot, hot, hot. Please make sure you stay hydrated during the match. We always have cool water and sports drinks in our range coolers as well as cups. Drink it up! First of all, it is good for you while we are sweating bullets on the range. Secondly, the coolers are much lighter when it s time to break down after the match! Let s hear a BooYah!! Winchester 1873 How old is the inside of your 1873 Winchester rifle? Actually, pretty old since the original patent for that toggle link action was submitted by Walter Hunt in 1848.

The patented mechanism was used in another unsuccessful gun, the Jennings, made by Robins & Lawrence.

The Volcanic design was plagued with a very weak cartridge until Benjamin developed a rimfire, copper cased, self-contained.44 caliber cartridge.

4 Winchester 1873 How old is the inside of your 1873 Winchester rifle? Actually, pretty old since the original patent for that toggle link action was submitted by Walter Hunt in That was the same action used in the Volition lever action rifle which was chambered for, a not too powerful, caseless rocket ball cartridge. But that is a subject for another article. The patented mechanism was used in another unsuccessful gun, the Jennings, made by Robins & Lawrence. In 1855, three gunsmiths/inventors Daniel, Horace and Benjamin bought the patent rights and produced the lever action Volcanic rifle and pistol. The Volcanic design was plagued with a very weak cartridge until Benjamin developed a rimfire, copper cased, self-contained.44 caliber cartridge. However, at that time, there was really no big demand for a repeating rifle and so the company went bankrupt. In a historic stroke of luck or brilliant business acumen, one of the investors, a shirt maker by trade, bought out Horace and Daniel. The new owner retained only the services of Benjamin Tyler Henry. While the shirt maker and B. Tyler Henry went into the arms manufacturing business so too did Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson. As you know, Smith & Wesson is still in business today. Historical Note: The H stamped on Winchester.22 rimfire case head rounds are in memory of B/ Tyler Henry. B. Tyler Henry went on to improve the Volcanic rifle. The improved design became the 1860 model Henry. It was chambered for the.44 rimfire cartridge Henry had developed. As for the shirt maker, none other than Mr. Oliver Winchester, his investment proved to be a sound one. The first few Henry rifles had a steel frame, but later guns had a frame made of Gun Metal. Gun Metal is a type of bronze that is much stronger than brass yet still has the brass color. The 1860 rifle was used in the Civil War by individuals that bought them directly from the New Haven Arms Company. The infantrymen were never issued this weapon because it was thought than they would waste ammunition. Since the 1860 model had a magazine capacity of sixteen rounds, it had a pretty fast rate of fire and can be considered the first assault rifle. That many not seem like much fire power by today s standards, but an accomplished infantryman with a Springfield rifled musket under ideal conditions (meaning they were not being shot at by an opponent armed with a Henry) could fire off about three shots a minute. The 1860 Henry had some weak points. Some of which were that it had no forearm and the magazine tube was open on the bottom to dirt and debris. It was also somewhat complicated to load and expensive to manufacture and maintain because the entire barrel and magazine tube were milled from one piece of steel. Henry improved those weak points of the gun with the 1866 model by including a forearm and closed magazine tube that was loaded through a gate and Page 4 of 10

cut into the frame. This is known as the King s improved patent. The frame was still gun metal and is how its nickname came to be Yellow Boy. It was still chambered for the.44 Henry rimfire cartridge.

The 1873 was chambered for the center fire cartridge as well as several other calibers. It was called The Gun That Won the West where it, along with the Colt Peacemaker single action revolver, was a very popular combination for that time period. There is no doubt that the 1873 is the Gun that Won the Cowboy Action Shooters Heart when chambered in.38 S&W special (Hey! Remember them??) cartridge. It was really the last of the successful toggle link Winchesters. The effort in 1876 to make a rifle for cartridges bigger than the really resulted in turning a silk purse into a sow s ear. The toggle links were just not strong enough to handle the pressures generated by ammunition like the black powder round and the movement to smokeless powder loaded cartridges. Even so, they were popular enough that about 720,000 were made between 1873 and Then came John Moses Browning and his 1886 model. A really strong action for powerful cartridges like and followed by the 1892 model for pistol calibers and, well, the rest is history. Historical Note: The toggle link system is also used in several more modern guns. The most well-known being the Luger self-loading pistol. Everyone knows the Winchester 73 is the gun that won the West and on that, I will agree. My argument is that you must admit the Sharps Big 50 was the gun that made the West safe for the Winchester.
