The Silver Arrow Journal Official Newsletter of the Silver Arrow Bowmen Issue The Presidents Podium- Talk about feeling like bathwater but I won t be the only one, on the chopping block was anything that wasn t an NFAA class, except for Peewees. The Board wanted to embrace NFAA classifications, as a framework to make ours. This began as a discussion in the last meeting to cut down some of the categories and better define them, in regards to age classes and shooting style classes. What we ended up with was a total revamp of these classifications, based on NFAA rules. I advised the Board against this, as in my opinion, the NFAA, from their ivory tower of paper target shooting & competition is not particularly in tune with local clubs and bow hunter driven 3-D shoots. This has been the case for years and that is why you see so many local clubs that do not strictly adhere to NFAA classifications in age and equipment. Those clubs, just as SAB has in the past, adjust the categories to what works locally and is inclusive for their particular demographics. NFAA rules allow for this for state and local club shoots. There will be a more detailed explanation of the categories in the Rub Although I do not agree with the changes, I do support the process. So the motion to take this action was made and passed by the board and I will follow it. If you don t like it, get involved and make sure you or a director representing your interests knows what you want and attends the meeting! I m pretty sure I will see Robert Canham and Steve Wells at the next meeting as the Longbow class was one of the ones cut. Don t go quietly into the darkness, if it affects you, show up and be heard! Or at least send an or something. Hope to see you at the Bonanza, remember it is on Saturday (April 20 th ) this year, because Sunday is Easter! It is the same format as last year, unmarked distances, but you can use a range finder and no spots on the targets. We will also have some great novelty targets and Easter eggs for the kids. The Spring indoor league will wrap up on Thursday, April 11 th, remember FREE Pizza for everyone that night and awards will be given out. You have to be present to win! Next Meeting Date Hope to see you at the next meeting, Monday, April 8, 6:30 pm, at the classrooms behind the Archery section in Scheels at the Legends Mall in Sparks Key Items of Business Spring League Financials Outdoor Bow Hunter League Bow Hunter Bonanza, final planning 1
The VP Voice Wow, lots of new changes, I know Kelly wasn t in favor of them, but we are moving forward With the Bonanza being moved to Saturday, it looks like it will be a bunch of us old guys who are either retired or at least able to get off work to do the set up on Thursday and Friday. Hopefully we will get it set up early enough on Friday that we can shoot it that afternoon, so we can all help with the shoot itself on Saturday and run all the novelty shoots we want. Remember, if you come out and help get it set up, you are helping the club and the shoot is free to you! So, I hope to see you guys out there, I think it s really going to be a fun shoot this year. Also, we will have a Bow Raffle this year; Wasting Arrows donated a new Elite Tempo 34! We have a lot more donations to the regular raffle as well, such as a BBQ from Western Nevada Supply and a Genesis bow from High Desert Archery. SAB is now lending its support to a local home school National Archery in the Schools Program in which several of our youth members are participating. They are practicing for participation in the national NASP tournament, one part of which is 3-D. SAB happened to have all of the required animals in stock, so now they can practice on the ones that they actually are going to be shooting. In the NASP tournament, everyone shoots Genesis bows with no sights. It is the Breen boys and the Radar girls and we wish them well! (plus, they are actually pretty good). 2
NBHA news The NBHA s calendar is set and it is on the web site, which is up and running again now. NBHA lists all of the shoots of the affiliate clubs, all over the state. The Rub Shooting Classifications for the Scheduling of the Bonanza In the board action from the last meeting, two classifications were removed from what we did last year: BHFSL- Which is a compound with fixed sights, but shot with fingers Longbow- Which was a longbow on which the string does not touch the limbs and for which the use of wood arrows is required Now BHFSL shooters can either shoot in regular BHFS with the release shooters or would go to the Freestyle Limited class which has any kind of sight and long stabilizers, but shoots with fingers. Longbowmen can shoot in the Traditional class against recurves and there would be no wood arrow requirement. Here are simplified explanations of the classes adopted: FS= Free Style Movable sights, scopes etc, any sight except a laser sight Any Stabilizer that doesn t touch the body Any mechanical release FSL=Free Style Limited Same as above, except no mechanical releases may be used FSBH=Free Style Bow Hunter (also commonly known as BHFS) Fixed, non-movable pins of five or less, no magnification (scopes) Stabilizers no longer than 12 inches, sidebars, back bars or V bars are allowed Any release BB=Bare Bow Any compound bow No sights Stabilizers allowed without restriction on length No mechanical releases Arrows must match in length, weight and diameter 3
T=Traditional Any recurve or longbow No sights No mechanical releases Single straight 12 inch or less stabilizer Arrows must match in length, weight and diameter FSLR= Free Style Limited Recurve Any recurve or longbow Any type of sight, except no magnification (scope) No mechanical releases Arrows must match in length, weight and diameter Stabilizers allowed without restriction on length Also, the senior classification went back to the NFAA standards, which is Senior, Silver Senior, and Master Senior. The Secretary Says I have sent out several s reminding members about the Bonanza and also asking for help with the work parties and in obtaining donations. The response has been from only a few members. We ask that all members take an active role in the club. The more help, the less work for others. The Board voted on what divisions, both age and shooting style for the upcoming Bonanza. We needed to decide so that a flyer could be developed and prizes could be ordered. It was overwhelming to realize that for 6 shooting styles and 8 age groups, we needed to purchase awards for 90 different divisions! Eliminating one style of bow actually eliminated 14 divisions since each age group, with the exception of PeeWees, is also separated by male and female. Additionally the Board supported spending $1500 for awards this year. Thanks to member Ryan Ress, owner of Logoed Tees, who sold us the awards at his cost, Silver Arrow Bowmen will be handing out some awesome prizes this year. Please like our Facebook page, Silver Arrow Bowmen of Nevada. Financial- We have had to purchase ink this month for our printer and also pay the first installment of our liability insurance. For more details on our finances, please come to the April meeting. 4
Membership Welcome to Rylee Inman and family, as well as Shane Phenix and family, who joined at our last indoor league night dues notices will soon be sent via so watch for this in April. Our club relies on our dues to cover liability insurance, target replacement and range supplies, and office equipment and supplies. Upcoming events For a complete listing of all Nevada Shoots please go to the Nevada Bow Hunters Association web site at nevadabowhunters.org Our club events are listed on our web page at Silverarrowbowmen.net The Range Captain s Corner March was a busy month for me at the Range. Scott Hensel and I logged 57 hours and approximately 275 miles of travel for repairs on numerous targets that came apart throughout the winter. I have also spent approximately $178 dollars on straw to rebuild several of the target butts that were damaged from shooters or rats eating the banding material. Thanks to Scott, we rebuilt some of the targets using metal banding to slow the damage of the packrats. Someone is taking our bales apart for no apparent reason. Please stop. If you think there is a problem with a target let me know or silverarrowbowmens@hotmail.com and let me know. We consumed all of the available straw bales in Reno to repair the needed targets and will get some more soon. The Boy Scouts have completed some of the target covers and are building more. The County Parks assisted in the installation of the covers and hopefully we can eventually get them all covered from the sun. Thank you Boy Scouts for your WORK On April 15 th I plan to work on the road so access will be available for any size vehicle. Mke Bertero and I have built a nice drag for the road and I will have other equipment on site. I do need someone with a quad to help drag the road and parking lot. If you can assist, please call or text me at If you see a problem at the range please me at bsharmon@charter.net. If you attach your own paper target, please move it around the target face so we can get more use out of the target butts. 5
