1 September 2018 APC P.O. Box 1172 Mesa, AZ President s Message By Dennis Slade Dear APC members, Well we are really into the hunting seasons now. Fur is nowhere near prime but many seasons are open and the rain has really helped with the rabbits and mice. Should be a lot of predator recruitment this year- both a bad thing and a good thing. Bear hunting is underway in a few units and soon to open in others. Unfortunately, it is closed for the year in units 23S and 22S. I guess the sow killers were out in force during August. I had the chance to hunt two days so far. Weddings and such made my options really limited. I spent the last day of the season in 23S where I saw 10 bears that day, two pretty nice boars. My buddy made a shot on one but I guess his kids played with his scope and the windage was way off. I saw the bullet cleanly miss about 3 feet to the right. I didn't shoot at any myself-plenty of time left and I want something better than what we saw. My buddy redeemed himself while I was out of state at a wedding and killed a giant bi-colored boar. Two mountain lions were spotted during that hunt as well. This makes for high expectations for the rest of the season! Deer and elk seasons are either underway as you read this or soon to open. I hope those of you who get out have an enjoyable time and fill your tags. I have been working up loads in my rifles and getting excited for the new season. I have 3 out of state hunts planned this season including two trips to Mexico. I think it will be a great year. Make every effort to take at least one new hunter with you this year so we can keep our heritage alive and strong. Many are willing to go and just need an invitation. 2 Hunt Report By Dusty Mosier Well, the season is upon us, time to dust off the gear and site in the weapons. As I do every late summer or early fall, I take a bunch of rifles out and send a few rounds down range. Then thoroughly clean them and put them back in the vault. That way whatever rifle I take out has been tested and sited in. Some of my rifles only get fired once a year at the range, however, I know that they all work and are on target. I also put new batteries in the Foxpro and anything else that needs them. I also hang my hunting clothes outside for a day to freshen them up. I load up my truck with everything that I would need to spend the night out. That way if something goes south I'm prepared. The only thing not in the truck all the time are my guns and some food. By preparing my truck and equipment this way I can go out with very little notice. As for stuff in my truck, I always carry two spare tires. Given the remoteness of where we often go hunting, a second spare may get you home. Most of your camping/hunting gear can be made to fit in a couple of rubber totes. I would rather carry this stuff and not need it than need it once and not have it. Another thing is, check your hunting license. Since they no longer expire at the end of the calendar year, it's easy to forget if it is current. Buy a lion and a bear tag, just in case one happens to show up unannounced. Their you have it, my preseason prep talk, now get out there. You can't kill anything from your couch and nothing is dying unless lead is flying! Be Safe, Have Fun, Shoot to Kill!...Dusty September Meeting Program Hunting Coyotes & Preparation The September 2018 meeting will consist of a presentation by John Arterburn and Ken Eaton covering Hunting Coyotes and Preparation. What to take onto the stand and everything else you will need to pursue the elusive coyote. 3 Your APC Board Members shown in attendance at the August board meeting. Board meetings are held the last Monday of the month and all APC members are encouraged to attend. They are held at the Islamorada Restaurant in the Bass Pro at 1133 North Dobson Road in Mesa. Board meetings start at 7:00 PM. New and Improved Website If you have joined the 20 th century you may have noticed that our website at Azpredatorcallers.com is not what it used to be! Some of you, we realize, do not use the internet and don t really give a hoot. But, apparently someone in the club registered the domain with Godaddy. Which the author vehemently advises to not use should any of you consider getting a website. Anyway, the identity of the person was not logged and the s for renewal were not set up to go to our treasurer. So, the domain expired much to everyone s surprise. No one had the log in to Godaddy. And we searched! Board members long past were contacted, members who moved out of state, friends of members who we contacted who had no idea what on earth we were talking about! A blast notice went out on the Facebook page, nevermind Dusty, just keep reading to no avail. So we contacted Godaddy, 3 of us individually mind you. We have one support ticket to claim ownership of the domain sending in our corporation documents, tax id, insurance, a left arm and someone s firstborn. The second support ticket was to claim the domain once it was available. See once the domain expires, we were told, the domain would be unavailable for purchase for 90 days. So weekly, yours truly would call Godaddy and check on the proof of ownership status. Usually to be met with a support person who was, well lets say my cat is smarter that some of the people I had to reexplain the situation to each time! About 52 days into the ordeal I make one of my status phone call and as habit pull up our hosting account, Godaddy s website, and our (old) website azpredatorcallers.com. When all of a sudden a travel website pops up under our domain name! The young lady at Godaddy cheerfully tells me someone purchased the domain. I explain that we have 2 open tickets, yada, yada, yada, we were in line to purchase it and we were told that it couldn t be purchased until 90 days after the expiration. She apologetically told me that she could not he held responsible for what another service representative has told us. We have received no further responses to our tickets and the site is now displaying things you do not want your kids to see. We had a few delays in transferring our hosting service from that domain to the newly purchased domain of ArizonaPredatorCallers.com. But, a skeleton site is now up and running, the next three months of meetings and hunts are listed. More content to come. If there is anything you would like to see on the website please Kara at Kara.Jensen.Az@gmail.com and let her know! 3

4 August Meeting Highlights Ken Eaton gave an excellent presentation on Shotguns at our August APC meeting. Ken Eaton having further discussions on shotgun use for coyotes. 4

6 September Club Hunt Sept. 15, 2018 This month s hunt will take us out of the heat a bit and up north to the Show Low - Snowflake area. Lots of good hunting grounds with farm fields, juniper and prairies. Hunt all day where ever you like and come check in at Kara s quiet little piece of land at White Mountain Lakes Estates. You are welcome to camp out but MUST register first. The ground is rocky so there are only a few spots for tents. Truck camper camping works best and no room for trailers on her property, obviously you can camp elsewhere though! Oh and no running water! Coyotes are heard throughout a day while prepping the land for a little house. You can easily reach the edges of the community and golf course to track the little buggers down! As you can see from the trail camera on the lower level of the property there is a pack that roams the area. Two packs can be heard howling up a storm nightly. This is also the area you may have heard about Doug and Molly the resident friendly foxes. Molly s kits are grown up and out on their own and have been spotted down near the creek. Should you bring a fox into check in, tell Kara it came from miles and miles away!! Should you go out hunting that day, think about taking someone not familiar with or just learning about hunting! Hope to see you there! Check in will begin at dusk, dinner will be served. Register your intent to attend this event by ing Kara at: kara@arizonapredatorcallers.com You will be sent the directions to the check in location once you register. Access the Event page on the website by going to 6
