15 Thrive-Kenya Muungano Primary School Construction June 23-July 2, 2017 Amboseli/Tsavo East/West Safari Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks form the largest national park in Kenya and one the largest in the world. Terrain goes from flat dry plains to a more mountainous and wetter geography, with swamps, Lake Jipe and the Mzima Springs. Known for bird life and for large mammal s like the black rhino, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, hippo and Masai lion, cheetahs and more. Day 1 Friday June 23 Arrive to Nairobi by 10pm. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). Check in to hotel (shared double rooms) Official tour activities will begin the following day at 7am. USA to Nairobi Day 2 Saturday June 24 Nairobi to Amboseli Breakfast at hotel, followed by a briefing meeting with guide. After the meet and greet you will drive along the main Mombasa - Nairobi highway to the majestic Amboseli National Park (about 3 hour drive). You will arrive at your lodge, AA lodge, in time for lunch. Check in the lodge, have lunch and relax an evening game drive. Following the evening game drive, dinner and free time will take place at the lodge. Day 3 - Sunday June 25 Amboseli to Tsavo West Park to Tsavo East 6 am game drive followed by breakfast at lodge. After breakfast you will check out of the lodge and head for Tsavo West National Park also known as home of the leopard (2 hour drive). Game drives will take place during entry into the park. Lunch served in Tsavo West. In the afternoon, you will make your way to Mzima Springs. At Mzima springs you ll have a 1 km walk by a ranger/guide, who will brief you about the attraction. Millions of gallons of water sprout out of rock forming springs and big pools of water, where hippos and crocodiles call this place home. After Mzima springs you will have your evening game drive and transport to Tsavo East National Park, theatre of the wild (2 hour drive. Check in and dinner will be served at the Ashnil Aruba Lodge. Day 4 Monday June 26 Tsavo East to Muungano Community After an early breakfast you will check out of the lodge and start a morning game drive. Lunch will be served and the safari will conclude as the group departs Tsavo East. The group will travel to the developing region of Samburu (4-hour distance). Participants will arrive to a gracious rural village in the afternoon and be greeted with a warm welcome from native villagers. Dinner will be served. Time available to unpack, rest, and interact with local residents. Overnight accommodations provided in local schoolhouse. 1

16 Thrive-Kenya Mungano Primary School Construction June 2017 Amboseli/Tsavo East/West Safari Located just below Ethiopia on Africa's eastern coast, Kenya offers a diverse landscape of central plateaus, arid deserts, and coastal plains that stretch along the Indian Ocean. Each CHOICE expedition begins and ends with a village celebration of brilliant song and dance. Day 5 Tuesday June 27 Day 8 Friday June 30 Muungano Community Breakfast served in village. Development projects will be scheduled throughout the week (construction of various village-identified initiatives). Lunch will be served in the afternoons with a brief rest provided. Dinner will be served in the evenings. Village activities and interactions will be provided to promote powerful intercultural exchanges between participants and native villagers. Overnight accommodations provided in two person safari style tents. Day 9 Saturday July 1 Muungano Community to Mombasa Breakfast served in village. Ceremonious village farewell will be scheduled in the morning (or evening prior). Group bus transportation will be provided back to Mombasa (4-hour distance). Lunch will be provided. Arrive to Mombasa in the late afternoon and check-in to Nyali Beach Hotel for overnight accommodations (shared Double Rooms). Group dinner will be scheduled in the evening to conclude the expedition and discuss experiences. Overnight at hotel. For centuries, Mombasa served as a major trading center in the Arab world with strong Muslim roots still evident in modern Swahili culture. In 1498, Vasco da Gama was the first European explorer to discover Mombasa, now a popular travel destination in eastern Africa. Volunteers can visit Biashara Street to purchase vibrant kangas, as well as Kamba Carvers to find exquisite gifts of handcrafted wood. CHOICE staff and team will have a group orientation/dinner in Director s home. Day 10 Sunday July 2 Mombasa to USA Breakfast served at hotel. Possible time at leisure to further explore Mombasa. *transportation will be provided to Moi International Airport (MBA) for international flight departures. Afternoon departures will allow for exploration time in Mombassa. $2650 per person (airfare not included) *included: Hotel accommodations, meals, park fees, certified group leaders, village lodging, village meals, and local transportation. * not included: Expenses of a personal nature, Safari tips & gratuities (advice for guide $5 per person per day), bottled drinks or other soft drinks A significant portion of each expedition fee is utilized for rural village development: project costs, construction materials, leadership building, and other elements leading to high-impact sustainable development. 2

43 PACKING LIST This comprehensive packing list has been prepared as a convenience. The recommendations reflect the experience of CHOICE as well as recommendations from previous expedition participants. Please check with the Director of Expeditions at CHOICE Headquarters ( ) or the designated Expedition Leader for specific needs or concerns. When reviewing this list, please refer to the weather information provided above to coordinate which items to pack and take on a specific expedition (according to the month/season). CHOICE recommends that all volunteers check the weather forecast prior to departure to ensure appropriate packing. It is wise to think in LAYERS when preparing for a service trip abroad. All volunteers are expected to bring a comfortable sleeping bag and foam pad (inflatable air mattresses optional). CHOICE recommends that all volunteers pack as light as possible (since brief hikes might be required before entering and/or departing from the village). CHOICE also suggests duffle bags and camping backpacks as ideal packing equipment (instead of suitcases). Please check with the airlines regarding luggage allowances and excess baggage fees. CHOICE will not be responsible for such fees. Participants have found that packing everything in large Ziploc style bags makes it easier to find socks and shirts during the expedition, but also keeps clothes clean and odor free. CHOICE suggests also bringing such a bag to store dirty clothes throughout the expedition. *One golden piece of advice: Leave behind a clean change of clothes at the hotel or keep a clean change of clothes inside a bag during the entire expedition. Why? So that there is a fresh outfit to wear when boarding the international flight home! You ll thank us later!
