MAGAZINE AUTUMN EXCLUSIVE MAGAZINE FOR WWF SUPPORTERS ISSUE 37 TIGERS ROARING AGAIN The number of tigers in the wild has increased for the first time in conservation history thanks to the amazing support of people like you. Will you help WWF step up our fight for these magnificent creatures? Seven years ago, alongside the world s tiger countries, WWF committed to double wild tiger numbers by the next Chinese Year of the Tiger: With the help of caring supporters like you, we ve made real progress. In 2010, the world only had 3,200 wild tigers left. Today, that number stands at around 3,890. This increase shows that your efforts to shut down poaching and the horrific tiger trade are paying off. But we can t give up now. The threats against tigers persist, and WWF needs your urgent help to further boost their numbers over the next five years. Please donate today to help us reach 6,000 wild tigers by Your donation wil be used to: 1 Train and equip more antipoaching teams 2 Shut down illegal wildlife trade networks 3 Urge governments to phase out tiger farms 4 Protect tiger habitats 5 Reduce conflict between people and tigers
WWF-AUS / LEIGH WIGLEY OUR YOUNGEST FUNDRAISERS A LOT FOR YOU TO BE PROUD OF Motivated by the efforts of wildlife supporters like you, 11-year-old Olivia and Lisa threw themselves into raising money for endangered animals. Primary school students Olivia and Lisa couldn t count the hours they spent making bracelets, keyrings and loom band creatures but they said they were worth it. Their school stall was a sell-out, raising $310 to help WWF protect the Bengal tiger, giant panda and Asian elephant. Olivia told us: We just wanted to help, because we love animals so much. I love tigers, they re really cool. When Lisa told me about WWF and how other people fundraise for them, I said sure! Olivia did count the rubber bands that went into the lifelike giraffe she created: exactly 2,638. A lot of kids at her school were eager to pay 50-cents so they could have a guess at that number. The winner with a guess of 2,600 was very excited to take the giraffe home. While Olivia was working on her rubber band animals, Lisa was making hundreds of colourful string bracelets. The girls also created posters and got other children in their class involved. I feel really happy that we raised as much money as we did. Animals are people too and we should all care for them. Hopefully this money could stop them from becoming extinct and give them what they really deserve. Got a great fundraising idea you d like to share? 3 HELPING TIGERS CLAW THEIR WAY BACK NATUREPL.COM / EDWIN GIESBERS / WWF Your powerful kindness is giving new hope to the world s wild tigers. WWF is working at all levels to help the world s tiger countries meet our ambitious joint goal of reaching 6,000 wild tigers by Here s an overview of the projects your generosity is making possible; Zero poaching To wipe out tiger poaching across Asia, WWF is training and equipping dedicated anti-poaching units. These brave teams work tirelessly to protect tigers from the poachers who trap and kill them for their body parts. Phasing out tiger farms WWF has been calling on governments to close the farms where tigers are bred and slaughtered for a thriving black market in tiger products. As many as 8,000 tigers are held captive on these gruesome farms many more than are left in the wild. Closing down trade networks TRAFFIC, the world s leading wildlife trade monitoring network, is a strategic alliance of WWF and IUCN. We re fighting to strengthen laws and ensure organised criminal networks are investigated and offenders brought to justice. EXCLUSIVE MAGAZINE FOR WWF SUPPORTERS ISSUE 37
Looking for an Easter gift? ADOPT A TIGER! Adoptions make a great gift and help make a real difference to the wild tiger s chance of survival. You ll be helping to protect vital habitat, strengthen anti-poaching patrols and monitor tiger populations. Adopt a tiger by 10 April to ensure your gift pack arrives in time for Easter. Visit wwf.org.au/tiger or call WWF-AUS / LAURENT DESARNAUD TIMELINE OF YOUR TIGER ACHIEVEMENTS 2010 WWF and the world s tiger range countries commit to doubling wild tiger numbers to at least 6,000 by Nepal and the People s Republic of China sign an agreement to address illegal wildlife trade. Nepal s Banke National Park is declared a protected area for tigers The first satellite-collared tiger is translocated to the wildlife sanctuary of Bardia National Park in Nepal. Nepal celebrates 365 days of zero poaching WWF undertakes its first-ever tiger survey in Bhutan. Laos pledges to phase out tiger farms. Thailand s infamous Tiger Temple is shut down. Global wild tiger population is estimated at around 3890 the first recorded increase in conservation history. Protecting habitat To thrive, tigers need a lot of space, enough food, and protection from threats such as poaching. That s why WWF is working alongside local partners to protect and connect their fragile habitat. Supporting communities As their habitats shrink, wild tigers are increasingly coming into conflict with people. WWF is helping local communities to protect both tigers and their livelihoods. Surveying tigers WWF is using the latest technology to track and monitor tiger populations, so we can then push for policy change and new conservation areas. More work ahead On average two tigers are still killed each week, and their parts trafficked by international criminal networks. WWF needs your urgent help to end the cruel tiger trade and protect tigers from other threats. Will you please donate to help WWF keep up our vital conservation work for tigers? LIVING PLANET MAGAZINE AUTUMN
Today s ten year olds can thank passionate Australians like you for what is now the world s biggest movement for climate change. On 25 March this year, millions of people around the world will switch off their lights for Earth Hour. Many of those taking part will be ten-year-old children born the same year that WWF helped kick off Earth Hour here in Australia. SWITCH OFF TO JOIN THE FUTURE SATURDAY 25 MARCH 8:30-9:30PM LOCAL TIME These children represent what your support can achieve and why it s more important than ever to keep fighting for our planet. Today s children know more about climate change than any other generation. And they know it s an urgent threat to the survival of our endangered species and fragile ecosystems. In Australia, your action on climate change helps protect unique native animals and our extraordinary Great Barrier Reef, so they can still be here when these children grow up. Ways you can support Earth Hour: Switch off from 8.30pm local time on 25 March! Get together with your friends and family or visit earthhour.org.au to search for an event near you. Get active online by registering at our website for Earth Hour updates and sharing your lights out photos, and by joining the conversation on social media with the hashtag #JoinTheFuture. Buy a cookbook that celebrates Australian food and looks at the impact of climate change on farming communities. Visit earthhour.org.au/cookbook-purchase to place your order for Planet to Plate: The Earth Hour Cookbook. All proceeds go towards Earth Hour s work with schools, small business and community groups. Thank you for everything you do to protect our world for future generations. A TRIBUTE TO JAMES FAIRFAX WWF is saddened by the passing of James Fairfax, a lifelong wildlife supporter who helped shape Australian conservation. James had been an important member of WWF since its establishment in Australia in 1978, serving as a WWF Trustee in the 1980s. He was also a generous financial supporter, donating millions of dollars to protect threatened 5 LIVING PLANET MAGAZINE AUTUMN 2017 species, particularly those here in Australia. In more recent years, James played a vital role in conserving endangered species in southwest Australia, including woylies, black-flanked rock-wallabies and quendas. James Fairfax s passion and generosity has made a significant difference to the survival of Australia s precious wildlife and landscapes. That s a legacy for all Australians to treasure.
WHY I LOVE MY JOB WWF conservationist Darren Grover talks about his lifelong passion for animals, and why it s tough to choose a favourite. When did you first hear about WWF? I ve loved animals since I was young, so I knew about WWF and the work they do. But my early knowledge of WWF was only in relation to their work with iconic species such as pandas, rhinos, tigers and elephants. It was only as I got older that I became aware of the work WWF was doing to protect our beautiful and threatened Australian animals. What s the best bit about your job? Leading a passionate and dedicated team on the frontline of the species extinction crisis we literally make a difference! Nothing beats working on-the-ground to save rock-wallabies, sea turtles, black cockatoos, bandicoots, bettongs or Gouldian finches. What s the biggest challenge? Convincing more Australians to fall back in love with our unique and iconic wildlife. Our amazing supporters are doing so much, but we need more everyday Australians to back wildlife conservation. That s key to inspiring the level of support we need from governments, businesses and philanthropists panda symbol and WWF is a Registered Trademark WWF-Australia, GPO Box 528, Sydney NSW 2001 T F wwf.org.au How do you describe your job to strangers? I m saving Australia s wildlife from extinction! My team and I do this by partnering with governments, universities, community groups, Indigenous rangers and Traditional Owners, businesses, farmers, and most importantly WWF supporters. We all have a role to play in stopping species from dying out. What s your favourite animal or bird? That s a tough question and changes on a daily basis. Right now I m really into quolls Australia s fearsome little predator. The beautiful yellow-footed rock-wallaby is also a favourite. And like most people, iconic species such as the tiger, snow leopard and red panda take my breath away. I feel very lucky to work for an organisation that is dedicated to the conservation of these extraordinary animals.
