The event was primarily put together by OSH Members and non-members who frequent and chat on the OSH Forum. On Saturday morning several folks went hunting for sheds out towards Silver Lake. Five sheds were found, with one of the newcomers, Rick, finding his first shed ever. Saturday evening s barbeque was dominated by stories, and you can imaging what those were about. Good stories and conversation went well into the evening. OSH would like to thank all those who attended and brought sheds to share with everyone. There were truly some monsters! It was great to see sheds that each of you have found over the years and to hear stories about finding those sheds. A special thank you to Hornhog and family for hosting the event! We couldn t have done it without you and your family. The hospitality was great and sorry we missed breakfast Sunday morning. Another thank you goes out to all you OSH Forum goers for showing up! It was great to meet some of you and put faces to names. Next year s campout will be earlier in the year and will have a date set much more in advance than this event. We will try to hold the event after the primary shed hunting period, but still before summer sets in. Once again thanks for making this event happen. It was a good time!

2 Oregon Shed Hunters Page 2 FORUM TALK B Y T R O Y C A P P S Antler Fest 2007 OSH is planning the first ever Oregon Antler Fest 2007! Yep, you heard it right, an Antler Fest. OSH has had this idea for several years, and now is the time to get it going. We would like to make this a special event with catered dinner, raffles, and door prizes. The event would take place somewhere in the Central Oregon area with OSH Member and non-members invited. All who attend are encouraged to bring and show off their best shed antlers. There may even be a discounted admission price for those who bring sheds. We are also planning to have a couple measurers/scorers present to measure antlers, demonstrate the measuring process, and answer questions. We are also planning to put on a couple slide shows on shed hunting in general as well as some slides of some our favorite shed antlers. In the beginning, OSH built a webpage that didn t have a chat forum. Within the first few days of our public debut, we heard from several folks that a chat forum was a necessity. With one call to the OSH Webmaster, we were able to fulfill the request of creating a Forum! The rest has been history...stories and photos have been trickling in ever since. We have been amazed by the response. If you have not been on the Forum, you need to check it out at The OSH Forum is some-what centered around shed hunting, however we have created several other threads that are geared towards all aspects of hunting and general photography and discussion. In the past several months we have received some tremendous photos from Trail Cameras, of which we felt needed some recognition. Check out the following bugling bull photo that Tree-Killer caught on his trailcam last week. This bull just finished his mud bath in his wallow and thought he would let everyone else know about it. What a great photo! And check out the monster buck that Tree Killer was able to film (lower left). Another great trailcam photo was submitted by Sooslaw back in April of this year. This photo is below, which shows a couple cow elk staring down a black bear wandering into the meadow. Neat photo! Several other great photos have been submitted and are still available for viewing on the OSH Forum. Keep up the great work folks and keep those trailcam photos coming! We truly enjoy them all. Well actually any matching set, large or small, is a tremendous find in most shed hunters eyes. And lets face it, the odds of finding a matching set of monster sheds are very slim, especially when the odds of finding a matching set are somewhere around 15% according to our general figures. This figure may seem high to some of you, however it is based upon spending a small amount of time looking for the match once a single is found. We figure the 15% figure would be much more like 10% or less if we didn t spend some time looking for the other side. Finding the match to larger antlers seem to be somewhat higher than this 15% figure as the bigger antlers seem to drop closer together. However, this is not the rule, just a general observation that we have made. Over the past several years, OSH feels that we have been able to increase our odds by using a strategy we refer to as the circle and grid. Depending on the size of the antler, we may spend more or less time looking for a match. Generally we circle the location in yard increments, depending on the topography. If we are in steep terrain, we ll generally grid straight lines across the side slope rather than walk up and down slope in a circle. We typically circle a general location out to about yards, and if still no luck, we try gridding the same area in yard increments, depending on vegetative cover and sight distance. Several times we have found sheds while gridding that we didn t find in our circling routine. This technique has been very successful for us, however still more times than not we spend countless hours searching and finding no match. I guess the sport of shed hunting wouldn t be as exciting if sheds were easy to find! Best of luck in your near future shed hunting adventures and be sure to share your photos on the OSH Forum. 5 Oregon Shed Hunters Page 5 F REE E N T R I E S I N T O THE O S H R E C O R D B OOK A ND M E A S U R E R S IN Y O U R A REA As most of you already know, the official OSH Record Book was developed so that shed hunting enthusiasts could show off their shed hunting finds and keep track of other big sheds being found around Oregon by other hunters. At this period of time within the organization we have received a few entries and expect more as OSH gets more advertisement and publicity throughout the state. At this time, we feel we have only reached a very small portion of the shed hunting enthusiasts across the state. As a special offer, we would like to offer every OSH member two free entries into the official OSH Record Book. Just remember that the shed must be one found in Oregon and the shed has to be scored by an Official OSH, Pope and Young, Northwest Big Game, or Boone and Crockett scorer. And if you have friends that are not OSH Members, remember non-members can also put entries in the Record Book. If you have a shed that you ve already had scored and that makes our minimum score (on our webpage), let us know. All we need is a copy of the official measuring sheet, with the measurers information. If you need a shed scored feel free to contact us, or see the list below of measures in your area.
