Belvoir Bowhunters Newsletter Issue 268 October 2016 Excellence in Archery & Bowhunting The Club Meeting was held Wednesday, October 12, 2016 Start time 6:00 pm President s Message -by Bakari Dale Membership Committee: (recruiting, retention & reclamation) Hunting Committee: (Organize hunts, Hunter Orientation, Bowfishing ) Tournament Committee: (Judges, Range Officers, Time Keepers) Communications Committee: (Photographer, Bulletin Boards) Instructor Cadre: (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, IBEP, Certification) WELL DONE BELVOIR BOWHUNTERS: Membership has now grown to 207 members!!!! Belvoir Bowhunters & NORVA were featured in the Virginia Department Game and Inland Fisheries VDGIF magazine called the Outdoor Report. VDGIF is responsible for the management of inland fisheries, wildlife, and recreational boating for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Belvoir Bowhunters & NORVA were also featured in the Virginia Bowhunters Association Fall Issue of the Flight magazine. VBA UPDATES: At the VBA scheduling conference the clubs schedule de-conflicted nicely with the VBA 3D spring shoot and our Wild Game Dinner. The VBA 3D spring shoot will be held on the 9th of April so it does not conflict with our WGD on 22nd. Currently the club does not have an April 3D shoot scheduled but we do have the Military Child appreciation shoot scheduled in April. It is not too late to add a shoot in April but it will be extremely tough because all the other days are occupied by clubs in our region, the VBA Banquet, our WGD, and the VBA Spring 3D. I approved removing this shoot because we also have a calendar packed full of events for the club for None the less the only other date available for an April shoot is Easter weekend. Next, after being nearly a year and a half late, Belvoir Bowhunters finally submitted their page for the VBA history book also known as the "VBA Red Book". A copy of that page can be seen below. Also during the general assembly meeting; we discussed the guidelines for the Virginia scoring system for the VBA Hunting Awards, specifically for doe weight. When filling out the updated VBA Bill Bennett application for VBA Hunting Awards if you do not have a scale available you can use the guidelines for the Pennsylvania weight estimating system. Having few game check stations and considering most of us are conducting Deer Management up here in Northern VA we have been using the Pennsylvania weight estimating system for years. The estimator provides both live and dressed weight and is sufficient for recording the weight of the does on the form. This is good for keeping the entire state involved in the award process.

Also during the VBA Banquet awards will be broken out by Traditional Bow, Compound Bow and Crossbow, in addition to a first, second and third place winner. If you have any questions feel free to contact me or Shannon Nesselrodt - Hunting V.P. bowbenders@hotmail.com phone The VBA Annual Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, April 1st - "April Fool s Day". The VBA Double and Triple Crown award winners from 2016 are as followed: Jonell Frantz (FSR), Denny Cline (MSMBB), Tony Hall (HF), Resa Combs (AFFS/R) Cay McManus (FTRAD) Cay McManus (AFBB) Melinda Wilson (SFHC) Paul Vogel (SSMTRAD) Logan Weller (YMFS/R). Please come out to support the VBA, Bowhunters and our archers Logan Weller, Paul Vogel, and Resa Combs. BBH EB Election Slate for 2017: President: Bakari Dale Vice President: Greg Thompson Secretary/Treasurer: Larry Readal Activities Director: Rich Vigue Publicity Director: Randy Saldivar Range Warden: Walt Blackwell SGT-At-Arms: Ron Anderson. Tournament Captain: Ira Joseph Vice President -By Greg Thompson First of the Fall it s the time of the year when hunters get twitchy, and wives get well, you will know when you re spending too much time in the Man Cave watching your Whitetail 101 DVDs, and practicing your rut grunts. I m blessed with an understanding family, and I try not to abuse my freedom to enjoy the outdoors. Since many of us are out in the woods again, remember to be neighborly. Most of us hunt in congested areas, and it s easy to forget the rest of the hunters around us that can t get out the same times we do. I ve had gut piles dropped at the base of my stand, been cussed out for signing into an open hunting area on post, and had few pictures on my cameras that helped explain certain signs on the ground. Remember the other guy, and hopefully he will do the same when the time comes. The way of life for the club at MWR is changing, and we will need to flexible in the coming months to adapt with the new requirements. Please pass a thank you onto your club President, the club lease has been extended further than we have been to get it signed in the past years. His work, the many discussions with the MWR leadership, and your membership interaction with the ODR staff have made this possible. We are a strong organization on post again, and that work doesn t stop, we will have to keep

recruiting members, and setting the positive example of what right looks like for private organizations on post. Elections coming again in December, and the Election Committee will ringing your figurative doorbells looking to fill a couple key positions. Please consider volunteering your time for our organization, and the future of the Archery programs on Fort Belvoir. Good Hunting! Activities Director Report -by Rich Whew! Done with another H4H 3D shoot! A huge thanks to everyone who donated prizes and purchased raffle tickets! We were able to donate over $5,000 we couldn't have done it without your support! I hope you all have a very successful hunting season and we'll see you at the meetings! Secretary/Treasurer s Report -by Larry Readal Meeting Minutes for September 2016 meeting Bakari called the club to order at 6:05pm on September 14th 2016 in the main range of the ODR archery center. We had 27 members to include the EB in attendance. The recognized guest were Paul Vogal s brother and new member Carl Goke. Next the officer s report was read off starting with the Tournament Captain Brandon Sikes at 6:15. Brandon, informed the club we are thinking about running a Fall Indoor League Shoot. What interest is there? How many folks would realistically come out?? We will do it, but only if we get enough shooters volunteers to come out. He also discussed the goodness of having an IBO Qualifier here in the club. He explained that our June 3D shoot next year will be an IBO Qualifier and will take some modifications to the 3D course, and some additional targets, but this would be a really professional event to add to our list of shoots. He discussed the importance of the event to the club and region. In the absence of the Secretary/Treasurer the President at 6:25 pm informed the club we have approximately $10,400 in account and membership around 195 members. With respect to the Hunters for the Hungry, BBH donated $5,077 to HftH! We kept out enough to cover the majority of our expenses. Biggest Income: The General Raffle. Biggest Expense (besides our donation): Raffle Prizes. Next our Private Organization renewal was submitted request 21 July. We also submitted additional requested information on 12 August and 1 September. Our License (Lease) with the Army expires 31 Dec The SEC/TRES will be working up our renewal request in September for the President s review / sign out. At 6:35 PM the Publicity Director Rebecca Sikes, we have some really good pictures from the HftH shoot and informed the club that hunting season right around the corner so try to get pictures and videos for the Newsletter & Bulletin boards. We are looking for volunteers to help maintain boards, Facebook and photographers to take hunt videos & pictures for the newsletters, website and Facebook. Next, the President spoke for the Vice President and Activities Director. He stated turnout was lower than expect we had registered shooters, but last year we had 128. He asked the club member to us to give feedback on the following: 3D Course - How was course? o Registration - Any comments? o Flow of events? What could have went better? o HftH Raffle: How did it go? How were raffle prizes, how could we make the event better? o Food - Did everyone like the food approach with the caterer? Meal Cost? At 700pm the SGT at Arms Jerry Michonski requesting a list of volunteers to support the Food plan for the Fall events, and meetings in Oct, Nov, Dec. This was followed by the Range Warden Walt Spaulding soliciting volunteers to rebuild the bow racks for the Indoor Range and to help with the working party for additional repairs and to clean up Broadhead Range on Sunday 25 September at Lastly, the President Bakari Dale spoke from 7:05-7:25 about growing the number of members from 195+ members to over 200. He state the club has a full schedule next year and we want people enjoying the sport. We had some really big and successful events WGD, Pig Roast and HftH shoot. We need to start thinking about the next Wild Game Dinner. Volunteers were reminded to fill out the log book for volunteer of the year and the instructor of the will be based on your craft. He then discussed the success of the Hunting Committee: Rick Atchison, Clint Horton, and Gene Miska hosted the Ft Belvoir New Hunter Orientation (NHO) on 20 August about 9 folks came out. It was

GREAT! They covered almost all hunting areas. Tonight Kevin Walter will discuss hunting so if you did not get a chance to attend the NHO this is probably second best. Bakari discussed budget shortfall and mentioned he failed to see issues with respect to the range because we have low overhead for our services but MWR is being effected nationwide and that Fort Belvoir is reorganizing the Leisure travel so we need to plan on how to stay solvent. We discussed the hunting program deer and duck. Kevin Walter and Rick Joined in to talk solutions, volunteers, locks, I-Sportsmen and loss of revenue. People understood that without the moves there would be possible loss of jobs for people. The President pivoted to allow the biologist talk about the usefulness of the new software system (I-Sportsmen) that will manage the hunting program other than the new locks for gates. The president informed the group on thing the MWR director and have been discussing such as Bus Trip to the Great Outdoor Show MONDAY, 6 FEB, An Archery Kiosk and organized hunting Trips. The President, asked for volunteers to serve on the Executive Board. He spoke highly of Jerry doing a great job as SAA and not having worry about anything because he always took care of it. He introduce the new Publicity Director Randy Saldivar and new Range Warden Walt Blackwell for He then informed the club about all the great work Rick Atchison has done for Fort Belvoir and the Club. He state Ricks last day will be Friday. It is time for him to move on because he has taken care of everyone and now it is time for him to take care of himself. The club applauded Rick for his service. BBH Election Committee. Ron Anderson will be cooking. Thank you!! Publicity Director s Message - By Rebecca Sikes If you consider an unsuccessful hunt to be a waste of time then the true meaning of the chase eludes you all together. -Fred Bear Here are a few pictures from BBH Members.

Deadwood Outfitters, Deadwood Idaho Our trip began with leaving the house at 7:00 am on Saturday September 10, it was uneventful all the way through check in, when the baggage helper decided Greg s bow case looked like a rifle case and needed to go through the oversize baggage door. This resulted in TSA cutting the locks and redepositing the remnants of the locks onto the cam of his bow. Southwest from Dulles to Boise with an hour layover in Denver went off without a hitch. The reserved F150 was waiting for us and soon we were on our way to Cabela s for those must have items whenever you re close to an outdoor store! Greg and I had decided to take 5 coolers up to Deadwood on the premise that one or both of us was sure to get an elk and would need a way to transport it back to Boise. So after an hour or so of stops we began our 145 mile trek into Deadwood via route 55 to Cascade. Upon arriving at the Deadwood lodge we were informed that our good friend Joel Lutkenhouse had fallen on the mountain but was walking out. When Joel arrived it was obvious he was in great pain even though he played it off as minor. Joel is one of the toughest guys I know and I ll let him finish his part of this story. It ends well, as he s still with us and in good spirits! Greg and I had booked the same week as the previous year and didn t check our hunt dates on our receipts, since we arrived on Sat. we thought we d start hunting on Monday but our hunt didn t actually start until Tuesday. We shot the bows and made sure they were dialed in and helped Tom and the crew with chores and riding into supply a drop camp. I think Greg split and stacked about 2 cords of wood while I got to ride into the drop camp. Tuesday morning found us up early and dropped Greg off about halfway up the mountain while my guide Tony and I went to the backside to hunt the ridgeline back to camp. This is a known elk area; Greg had harvested his cow elk on this mountain last year. Tony and I were easing along when a bull bugled about 300 yards away, we headed that way and could hear the cow calls but about the time we started going super stealthy, a US Forest Service surveyor walked right between us and the elk bye bye elk! There was lots of elk sign on the mountain so we eased along and about an hour or so later we heard elk footfalls so we crouched down and cow called. I knocked an arrow, when Tony pointed at the little knob 20 yards in front of us and told me he could see the spike bull s rack to the right of it. I never saw it and we were caught in the open, bye bye elk and back to camp we went. Tuesday about 12 we mounted horses for a ride across the river and up the other mountain. After a ride through some gorgeous elk country and old burns full of fresh elk sign we dismounted for about a ¾ mile trek to where we d make a plan to put the hunt on some elk we d seen the night before. Greg and his guide chose to go up and around a big alder bowl, while Tony and I would work our way down and through the lower part. We waited about an hour for the thermals to start heading down and we backtracked and headed down the ridge to the alders and hopefully the elk. About halfway there we flushed two grouse, the first only went up into the first tree, I looked at Tony and told him I couldn t stand it and had a small game tip on one of my arrows. I got back up the hill to get a level 20 yard shot, the grouse hit the ground right behind the tree it was in. I went down to retrieve it only to find it was still alive and didn t really want me to catch it. After it fluttered away (with my arrow), I set my bow down and without thinking about the binoculars and range finder strapped to my chest, I did about a 3 yard belly flop onto the grouse and finished the business. Well his partner was still in the other tree, as I was feeling cocky reloaded the arrow and missed him. How far will an arrow fly when you shoot it up in the air off a 65 degree slope? Needless to say it was gone, maybe someday someone will find it. Back to elk hunting, we snuck in to the alders and spooked a couple of cows down the ridge, there was a bull up in an open patch of the alders bugling and trying to work our way but there was too much alder between us. Then the cows decided they needed to go back up the mountain and were working right to the bull when the herd bull stepped out and took them from the young one. Down the mountain we went. On the way, I tried to emulate Joel s acrobatics and did 2 somersaults of my own, luckily they were in grassy areas! We woke up Wednesday to pouring rain, the country really needed it to knock down the Pioneer fire that was just 10 miles away so we didn t complain about it. The rain tapered off about 4 so we tried the ridge that we started Tuesday on, with Greg on the south end and me on the north end, a couple of miles apart. We both got into elk but we couldn t get them to come in close enough before it got dark. Thursday found us on horseback going up the mountain behind the abandoned Deadwood silver mine. About a third of the way up we ran into 6 cow elk, they went on about their business but it was great to see them within 100 yds. We let Greg off and rode on up the mountain as we were taking the high hunt this time. As soon as we got off the horses we heard elk! As we worked our way around the mountain, we had the bull bugling and could hear the cows, we didn t realize they were as close as they were and we ended up walking into four of the cows. We quickly set up and worked the bull but he had the high ground and the girls so he wasn t looking for a fight and took them and went on up the mountain. As we worked around the mountain, we jumped three more grouse, so out came another small game tipped arrow, Another 20 yard shot and with a puff of feathers, the grouse flew away. We retrieved my arrow and saw one of the other grouse in another tree and I ended up with the same result as my second shot the day before. We continued working

around the mountain and had another bull bugling at us but we couldn t close the deal on him. This was going to be an all-day hunt so about 12 we found a shady spot to eat lunch and nap until about 4:30 when the thermals were good again. (a good rule of elk hunting, if the elk are napping you should be too). We went around the first ridge and busted two cows out of a dark patch of timber. Around and down the mountain we continued, seeing all kinds of sign but no elk. We did see several mule deer and heard one big mule deer buck leave but couldn t put eyes on him. As we were nearing dark and getting further down the mountain we bumped two more cows but they were below us and caught our wind and headed out. Friday morning we glassed and put several herds of elk to bed and headed back to camp to formulate a plan for the evening hunt. At about 12, we saddled up the horses and loaded them in the trailer to head about ten miles south to another trail head. We rode about an hour up the mountain. We weren t exactly sure where the elk were, so we decided to walk up the last two thirds of the way. We made it to a spot and were catching our breath when a bull bugled not too far above us. The thermals were going up so we hunkered down to wait for them to change. As soon as they changed, Greg headed up and Tony and I headed around the middle of the mountain. We hadn t made it 50 yards and had a cow elk bedded below us that we couldn t get by and we weren t sure if she wasn t the lead cow with the whole herd bedded below her, so we sat and waited, 87 yards away but about 75 feet below us and no way to sneak up on her. About 30 minutes later she got up with her calf and walked away the same way we were heading so we let them get ahead of us and started down the trail. We must ve been going faster than the elk, they stopped on a bench and stared down at us and started barking alerting everyone on the mountain of where we were. We got away from them and got into another group of elk and had the bull working but we were on opposite sides of an alder patch and he wasn t going to work that hard. So we crossed and he got above us and we couldn t close the distance but I ll see that bull in my dreams standing on the ledge of the draw bugling at us. Back down the mountain, racing the sun down, when I say down the mountain, we re losing 2,000 feet of elevation as quickly as you can while not doing somersaults! Saturday morning we again glassed and put a good herd of elk to bed. We went back to the lodge and made a plan to hunt the same area that I killed my bull in last year. About 2 we saddled up and headed out. Half way up the mountain it started raining pretty good so we all got off and got the rain gear on, of course as soon as everyone was back in the saddle it stopped. We got up to the area that we wanted to start hunting so Tom took the horses back to the barn. Greg, the two guides and I walked up the trail about a half mile and threw a bugle out and a good bull answered! We setup with Greg upstream from me about 150 yards and the guides got in between us and started calling. The big bull would answer but wouldn t leave his girls. I only had 3 windows to watch and each would present a 50 yard shot if one of the satellite bulls came down to check us out. After about 30 minutes or so with no action Tony came down to get me and go hunt to the north, while Greg was going to go up over the top. I told Tony that I had seen a flash of elk color up the mountain about 100 yards so we crossed the creek to try. Tony stayed down in the creek while I eased up the mountain, since it had started raining again it was super quiet walking. I had gone about 30 yards when I saw a spike coming to Tony s cow calls! I let him get to about 20 yards and released my arrow, it hit but when he spun around I saw that my arrow hit a little back. He stopped at 30 yards and I put my 40 yard pin on him and shot over his back! He walked away up the hill. By this time the adrenaline hit and I had to sit down, Tony came up and I told him about the shots so we decided to give him some time. We heard a noise and peeked over the brush and there was the spike 30 yards away and walking up the mountain again. I grabbed my bow and started after him with a wall of brush between us, I made it about 30 yards and lost track of him, I turned to Tony to see if he d seen anything and when I turned back the spike stood up 10 yards to my left! It was obvious that he was hurt, he looked up the mountain and I quickly drew my bow. As soon as I got it back he started walking directly towards me with his head down so I had no shot at all. When he got to about 5 yards he saw me and took 1 step to my right and I was able to slip an arrow behind his shoulder, he ran about 40 yards and rolled over. Since there was still shooting light left, I told Greg, Tony and Andy to go hunt Greg, I could take care of my elk! The next day Greg rode up the mountain early with Tony to see if they could get back into the herd, I heard there were opportunities but I ll let Greg tell that story. I I rode up with Tom Carter, the owner of Deadwood Outfitters, and he proceeded to show me how to pack an elk off the mountain using a horse and a mule! If you re interested in a western elk hunt, Deadwood Outfitters does an excellent job, great food, accommodations, and lots of elk!
