1 Newsletter of the Cub Run Archers AFIWLA Archery Club 1 June 11th 09:00 AM- 1:00 PM Safari 2D Shoot Belvoir Bowhunters 3-D & Club Facebook = Cubrunarchers Picnic Shoot Upcoming Events: Next Meeting August 13 th 11:00 AM Cub Run Archers Money Shoot August 5 th 9:00 AM Belvoir Bowhunters Annual "Hunters for the Hungry 3-D Shoot August 26 8:00 AM President: Bob Walla reported that the nominating committee has come up with a slate of officers for the election to be held at the August meeting as follows: President: Bob Walla Vice President: Resa Combs Secretary: Bob D'Imperio Treasurer: Jim Kerrigan Range Captain: Chris Rose Indoor Range Officer: Byron Kissane Public Relations Director: Jim Smith 3-D Director: Ryan Johnson Social Director: Terri Perry. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Cub Run Archers would normally be on August 6th. However, Dave Dobbins pointed out that the next scheduled shoot is an ASA-type known distance 3-D money shoot to be held on August 5th. August 6th will be the rain date if necessary. For this reason, he suggested that the meeting be moved to August 13th. There being no objections to moving the meeting, it will be at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday August 13th in the clubhouse. Please note that according to the bylaws, the August meeting is when the membership votes on the slate of officers for the coming year. At the meeting, nominations will be accepted from the floor for all offices. President Walla pointed out that the minutes of the last meeting were posted and it was moved to accept the minutes as presented. The motion was seconded and passed without objection. President Walla reported that, as expressed at a previous meeting, there was a desire to obtain some additional ASA targets for out 3-D shoots and to obtain some cores for the current targets. To this endeavor, 4 of our older 3-D targets were sold to Belvoir Bowhunters for a total of $650. This amount will be added to $1,000 from the Cub Run budget and $1,000 from the Chapter Field Archery budget for a total of $2,650. This will allow for the purchase of new ASA targets (a Grizzly Bear, a Standing Bear, an Alligator and 2 Turkeys as well as 10 cores for our current ASA targets). A motion was made and duly seconded to proceed with these actions and the motion was passed without objection. The treasurer has a list of the specifics of the order and will place it tomorrow. President Walla reported that a shadow box is being obtained for display of the late Bill Ayres shooting vest in the clubhouse. The President also announced that the arrow cutter in the shop has now been equipped with a vacuum device to remove dust from the air during the arrow cutting process. Those wishing to know how to operate the modified saw should contact Bob Walla.
2 Tournament Director/Vice President: Dave Dobbins reported that the next VBA sponsored shoot will be our annual Buck Buster shoot scheduled for September 10th. The tournament director will need help in setting up the range and the details of this will be forthcoming at the August and/or September meeting and published in the CRA Newsletter. The Vice President then mentioned that the next non-vba shoot will be the known distance 3-D money shoot scheduled for August 5th (rain date of August 6th) and reminded the membership that the details of the shoot are extensively outlined in the most recent newsletter. These details were recapped for the assembled membership and the members were encouraged to spread the word and show up to shoot or at least participate in viewing of the shoot down and barbecue to follow. New Business: There has been an ongoing issue with people placing unwanted deer parts from the deer processing station in the dumpster by the practice range in hot weather months that results in unacceptable air quality at the range. Going forward, animal parts MAY NOT be put in this dumpster from the beginning of May to the end of September. If you wish to use the deer processing station, take your leavings with you during these months. Otherwise, use of the processing station will cease during hot weather months. Range Captain: Chris Rose has stated that ticks are still a problem on the range and a second application of commercial-grade Spectricide will be applied to the range. Chapter Field Archery Representative: Dick Riemer reported that the qualifications for the Fairfax County Park hunts has concluded and the proceeds of the endeavor have been turned-over to the Chapter treasurer. Indoor Director: The next FITA shoot will be November 4th and 5th. TO THE GENEROUS HUNTERS OF VIRGINIA WHO DONATED 283,198 POUNDS OF VENISON DURING 2016 Published: 03 The H4H have now completed their 25th year of operation and a total number of pounds of venison donated was 6,389,804. They would like to extend their deepest thanks to all the hunters who donated and also to everyone who made a monetary gift to the program for the processing of the venison. The total donated and distributed in 2016 was 283,198 pounds. The East, including the Eastern Shore donated 17,266 pounds, serving 69,064; the Richmond and Central Virginia donated 23,475, serving 93,900; Lynchburg and Southside donated 56,184 pounds and serving 224,736; the Northern Virginia donated 73,936 pounds and serving 295,744; the Southwest donated 67,512 pounds and serving 270,048 and the Winchester Valley donated 44,825 pounds and serving 179,300 folks. Please visit their website at to see the complete lists of both financial donors and hunters who donated deer. Again 'thanks' to everyone!

6 Scoring 3d Target ASA uses McKenzie 3D targets, with 12-ring and 14-ring scoring systems. Each arrow in an ASA 3D shoot is worth 0, 5, 8, 10, 12, or 14 points. A miss is worth 0 points, five points are earned for a hit anywhere on the body of the target, and eight to 12 points are assigned to the scoring rings positioned where the creature s vital organs would be. In special bonus competitions, a 14-point ring is housed in the upper rear of the 8-ring. The IBO partners with Rinehart Targets for its 3D foam targets. While IBO doesn t specify which animals can be used as models, it does indicate certain scoring areas for the targets. IBO utilizes an 11-point scoring system per target, with a 10- ring centered inside the vital area. Within the 10-ring, an 11-ring or X-ring approximately 25 percent of the size of the 10-ring is placed for the top score. A vital area ring, or 8-ring, approximates the heart, lung, and liver area of the appropriate animal. The rest of the body is considered for five points, and a miss or an arrow not touching body color constitutes zero points.
