2 Training Committee Report: We have concluded our yearly schedule of Trap Fundamentals Classes. with some very enjoyable students. Several ladies really got into the shooting portion, and did a fine job. Two of our patrons were former bird hunters in the years past and wanted to experience Trap Shooting in their golden years. Our responses were again, fantastic on all levels. We will be building our course outline during the winter months, and adding more time to the classes in the early spring to provide even better presentations from our experienced instructors. If any member wishes to join our team or has any ideas that may help our program, please feel free to contact any board member or myself. It would be greatly appreciated and well received. Finally, (and I know I do this many times) my most sincere thanks go out to our volunteer instructors who dedicate so much to the program and many others throughout the year. I would also like to thank our membership and board for all your help and support with our training mission at our club. All of you are what has made these programs such a success. Be Safe Dave Paulinski Training Committee Chair HUNTING SEASON IS COMING I was just down in southern Illinois where the white tail deer season is getting up some steam. The area vendors are tuning their shops and services to accommodate the many hunters who will be visiting the Pike County area in the near future. I talked with several business owners in my recent visit and they are very excited about the coming season. The weather has been perfect, and the deer are out in droves. (I know, I almost hit a big buck) Let us remember some basic safety rules and laws for the 2017 /2018 year. Do not Conceal Carry AND hunt in the State of Illinois. Anyone over 14 Must have a valid Hunter Education I.D. card on your person if you were born after Jan Only Broad Tipped arrows are allowed for deer hunting. Only three shells are allowed in your shotgun while hunting. At least 400 square inches of Blaze Orange must be visible on your clothing during hunting. Do Not wear red, white, blue or black during turkey season. These are just a few laws and regulations required in Illinois. I would urge you to fully research the laws for this and any other state you plan to hunt in prior to doing so. You can visit the IDNR website or that of other states to review their current laws. Above all, be safe, be responsible, be ethical, and enjoy our natural resources. Good Luck Dave Paulinski IDNR Master Volunteer Hunter Safety Instructor
3 Sportsman s Stories Gobble Wobble 2017 The Fall Wobble League is nearly finished with a full roster of participants and that once again signals the run up to the 15 th Annual Club Turkey Shoot Naperville Sportsman s Club turkey season opens on or about Thursday, November 16 th. Win a prize turkey to gobble up on your Thanksgiving Table! The Gobble Wobble is the Club s invitation-only, member shoot. The program is a sliding wobble, leveraging the full capability of our Pat-Traps as well as the 19 yards (?!) of the trap field. Amazingly, the outfitter continues to hold the line on cost the entry fee per hunt remains a mere buck per bird. NSC members Tom Blair and Mark Suda took advantage of the brief nuisance goose season by floating a spread of goose decoys on the Des Plaines River near Chanahon in September. Two geese flew in. None flew out. Tom and Mark agreed nuisance goose season should be all year long... As in years past, we allow a maximum of 20 Members per hunt, with 10 hunts planned ($10 max.). Hunting regulations require a possession limit of 2 Toms so everyone gets their chance to bag this wily Naperville fowl. Rules of the hunt - last year s guns receive a right of first refusal for this always-sold-out event. A wait list will be available for those interested in attending this year s hunt. To check availability, contact the outfitter. Reservations are pre-paid, so RSVP today! Call or Jay at (630) or jspitz@napervillesportsmansclub.org Jay Spitz Naperville Turkey Outfitters
4 ATA for 2017 Plan your schedule now For those club members who participate in ATA shooting, or for those who are interested in starting, I compiled a summary of shoots in and around the Naperville area that are planned for the coming year. While our club will be holding four shoots as usual, the number of shoots at local clubs has declined over last year. So, for the list below I expanded the list of clubs to include other area clubs that also offer ATA shoots. The list also includes information on state shoots for all the surrounding states as well as some of the regional events in the Midwest. You ll see from the information below, there are plenty of opportunities to register ATA targets without travelling too far. Keep in mind that the clubs listed below could change or cancel a shoot for a variety of reasons, so it s always a good idea to check with the club before making the drive. Websites for all the clubs and associations are also listed below, so you can find specifics on each shoot and contact information about the club. If you have questions about any of these clubs, or would like more information about participating in ATA events, please contact Scott Calhoun (scalhoun@napervillesportsmansclub.org or at the range during shooting hours) Target Year (September 1, 2016 thru August 31, 2017) March: 19 Chillicothe Sportsmen s Club April: 9 Chillicothe Sportsmen s Club 23 Naperville Sportsman s Club (targets only) 23 Peoria Skeet and Trap Club 23 Maywood Sportsmen s Club (Doubles Marathon) May: 4-7 Michigan Spring Team Shoot (MTA Homegrounds, Mason) 7 Peoria Skeet and Trap Club 14 Chillicothe Sportsmen s Club Missouri State Shoot (MTA Homegrounds, Linn Creek) 21 Downers Grove Sportsmen s Club (Illini Indian) Great Lakes Satellite Grand (MTA Homegrounds, Mason, Michigan) 24 Maywood Sportsmen s Club (6:00 9:00 pm, targets only) 27 Peoria Skeet and Trap Club (marathon targets) 28 Janesville Conservation Club June: 2 Peoria Skeet and Trap Club (targets only) 3-4 Peoria Skeet and Trap Club (Illinois Central Zone) 3-4 Janesville Conservation Club (Wisconsin Southwest Zone) 4 St. Charles Sportsmen s Club (Bob Sommers shoot) 10 Downers Grove Sportsmen s Club (targets only) 11 Naperville Sportsman s Club (targets only) Illinois State Shoot (Brittany Shooting Park, Bunker Hill) Ohio State Shoot (Cardinal Center, Marengo) 24 Chillicothe Sportsmen s Club (Doubles Marathon) 25 McHenry Sportsmen s Club (Illini Indian) 25 Janesville Conservation Club 26-2 Michigan State Shoot (MTA Homegrounds, Mason) 27-2 Kentucky State Shoot (Central Kentucky Gun Club, Berea)
