September 9, 2008 Membership Notes The Membership Committee reported no activity at the June 10th meeting. NMO sessions New Member Orientation sessions hosted by Club President Jim Monk, are mandatory for our probationary members and open to any member who wants a refresher on range operations and equipment. Upcoming dates for NMO sessions are tentatively scheduled for July 13th, August 10th and September 14th. President s Message Handicap Challenge The 2008 Handicap Challenge Shoot was a huge success. Thirty of us took the challenge and one came out the winner. That one individual was our very own Charlie Tlapa with a score of 88x100. The weather was menacing and the targets jumped though the air but everyone had a great time. The food and sodas were top of the line. It was a great night to be at the club. Work Requirement Members who shoot and ALL probationary members are required to meet a work requirement as stipulated by the policies and by-laws of the Club. Regardless of whether or not you receive a postcard, it is the responsibility of the member to meet his/her work obligations. To confirm your work hour status, NMO dates and to RSVP your NMO attendance or catch up on needed work hours, contact Club President Jim Monk at (630) or by at president@ napervillesportsmansclub.org....membership Committee What s Inside President s Message...1 Membership Notes...1 Shooter Accomplishments...2 Registered Shooting Update...2 Club Info Dates to Remember...2 Open House...3 The Fred Section...4 Classifieds...5 May Calendar...6 More New Events We have decided to forgo the Open House this year and have more shooting events through the end of the year. The registered program is due to follow on the coattails of the Mike Moore Trophy Shoot scheduled later this month. We expect the first registered targets to be thrown as early as late August, just after the conclusion of the Grand American tournament in Sparta, IL. We are working on developing the targets-only format for Sportsman s Park. Program While still to be determined, registered shooting can offer three disciplines; singles (16 yard), doubles (16 yard) and handicap (20-27 yard). Our challenge is to maximize the target we can throw given our limited capacity and need to maintain public access. Open House 2009 With registered shooting coming on line this fall, I requested that the Board table the Open House for We expect the Open House to be back in 2009, possibly on a bi-annual timetable thereafter. Memberships in the ATA and ISTA are $20 and $10 respectively, per target year. Enrollment for new members will be available the days of target registration. On days we register targets, the ATA charges a $2 flat fee, while the ISTA charges $1/100 targets. The pricing for the birds and ammunition at the counter is expected to remain the same as well as the ability to use self-loaded ammunition. We are working to secure dates for late August, September and October to jumpstart Registered targets will be set to ATA specifications with registered shooters segregated from those shooting practice. I m encouraged by those who have expressed their interest. As we continue to progress, we will keep you informed. 3 July 2008 Issue Handicap Challenge Shoot June 12th saw clear skies with high humidity, ahead a cold front offering the possibility of threatening weather, make targets dance; setting the stage for the evening s event. This year s program saw few surprises as the large crowds gathered, packing the parking lot as the weather complied. Thirty (30) members paid the entry fee for the opportunity to participate in this year s four sub-event shoot. Members skills were challenged by shooting 100 birds over fixed yardages of 21, 23, 25 and 27 yards. Commemorative belt buckles in silver and brass, engraved with the Club logo by Tilden Trophies were the announced prizes. Once again, Bob Ash catered all the food and refreshments for those participating in the night s action. Reminiscent of days past, coolers brimmed with root beer, flavored cream sodas and old-time Coca-Colas. Bottled water was iced on-range. Our grillmeisters, Brian Corcoran and Club director Bob Beyer were on KP. Kreger s fresh Bratwurst and Polish Sausage cooked on the grill, while their Calico baked beans simmered nearby, all complimented with a variety of condiments and a case of chips. Fresh baked cookies were dessert. Squad One took the field at 6:00 pm sharp. The remaining five (5) squads went off approximately every 30 minutes, leaving time at the end for any needed shoot-offs. Club director Charlie Tlapa earned this year s HOA honor. Charlie won the large embossed belt buckle with a well-earned 88x100. Winners of the club handicap championship were Mike Moore (21 yards), Jay Spitz (23 yards), Charlie Tlapa (High Overall), Brian Corcoran (25 yards), and Bob Ash (27 yards). 3 The 21 Yard event saw Club VP Mike Moore run 25 straight on the 2nd squad to chalk up the first win of the evening. Aaron Harriman, dug in and took runner-up honors. 23 Yards was won late in the evening as the last squad of the night shot. Jay Spitz took the event buckle with an oh-so-close 24, while fellow squad member Don Hiltz battled repeated left-hand targets, coming away as runnerup. Brian Corcoran set the bar for the 25 Yard event. Brian s 23 on the first squad proved to be too much for the competition. Fellow shooter Scott Calhoun bested the rest to take runner-up. The 27 Yard contest saw perennial host, Bob Ash; win his first handicap trophy from the longest yardage, on the last squad of the evening. Club Prez, Jim Monk, who helped start off the program hours earlier; took home the RU buckle. As a thank you for all those who entered, Bob Ash once again went above and beyond by presenting a special edition Snap-On flashlight & folding knife gift set to each shooter as they exited the trap field. Handicap Challenge Shoot had all the elements of a great event camaraderie, great food and competition to the very end. Our sincere thanks to Bob for continuing this fine tradition with its monumental effort to ensure another fun-filled shoot enjoyed by all..jay Spitz Shooters earning runner-up trophies in the club handicap championship were Aaron Harriman (21 yards), Jim Monk (27 yards), Scott Calhoun (25 yards), Don Hiltz (23 yards).

4 The Naperville Trapshooter 4 Club Championship Mike Moore wins club championship in singles Mike Moore topped 27 other club members to win the club singles championship in the recently concluded spring trap league. Joe Kuhn took the runner-up award, ending up only four targets behind Mike. This win gives Mike the first two legs of the Sportsman s Slam as he also took the doubles championship in March. In addition to trophies, the top ten shooters earned points toward the Club Champion award, based on their order of finish in the High Overall Competition: In addition to trophies, the top ten shooters earned points toward the Club Champion award, based on their order of finish in the High Overall Competition: League members shot yard (singles) targets each Thursday night for eight weeks, finishing on May 22.
