The Grand American covers 11 days, including two weekends, so there are only a couple of local shoots during August. Things get going again in September, with quite a few local shoots that will give you a jump on registering targets for the 2006 target year. August, 2005 Sat, 6 Sun, 7 Wed, 10 thru Sun, 14 Mon, 15 thru Sat, 20 Frankfort Downers Grove Grand American - Preliminary. Dayton, Ohio. Grand American - Championship. Dayton, Ohio. September, 2005 Sat, 3 Downers Grove (Targets Only) Sun, 4 Frankfort Sat, 10 and Sun, 11 Illinois Northern Zone - Northbrook Sun, 18 St. Charles Wed, 21 thru Sun, 25 Las Vegas Fall Handicap Sun, 25 Downers Grove Target Year Coming to an End The 2005 target year is coming to an end, with the Grand American serving as the unofficial end of the year. The target year ends officially on August 31, so any targets registered starting on September 1 are part of the 2006 target year. We ve got three club members committed to the Las Vegas Fall Handicap in late September. I ll be attending, along with Paul Johnson and Dennis Haffner. The club in Vegas puts on a great shoot and you can t beat the nightlife. Hopefully I ll have some good results to report when we get back. Sportsman s Club Members in the ATA News The Illinois State shoot was held from June 13 18, with Ed McGunn the only club member participating. Following the Illinois State shoot, we had six NSC members participate in the June 26 shoot at McHenry Sportsman s Club. Bob Ash and Tom Krolick both recorded 97 s in the singles, good enough for runner-up honors in B- Class. My 97 in singles was good enough for a tie for the continued page 3

3 The Naperville Trapshooter 3 ATA Corner continued C-Class trophy, but I did not stay for the shoot-offs and had to settle for the runner-up award. I also tied for the short yardage handicap event trophy with 95, but wasn t around for the shoot-off. Tom Krolick had a 93 in doubles which earned him the top prize in C-Class. Dennis Haffner, Rich Kelly, and Paul Johnson also shot the event. There were around 75 shooters for the singles and handicap events, and around 35 for the doubles. The weather, although warm, was perfect otherwise and the high scores reflected that. Northbrook held their annual Chicago Grand registered shoot on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17. Dennis Haffner, Paul Johnson, and I took part, with Dennis tying for top honors in the Saturday handicap. His 96 was good for a one-yard punch, putting Dennis back to the 21.5 yard line. Now Dennis can stop wearing the reflector on the back of his hat....scott Calhoun Vice President & Webmaster HELP WANTED Earn Club Work Hours Instructors needed at Trapshooting Fundamentals Class on August 28, 2005 We had 4 instructors and 15 students at the July class. We would like to see a better balance of instructors and students. Please help us ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for our new shooters. Call Ed Heasley at to volunteer your time and expertise. Shooting Tips & Trivia: Rise and Fall of Bobwhite in Illinois Prior to World War II, bobwhite flourished on the landscape created by small, general farms with woodlots, shrubby fence rows, crop rotations of corn, wheat, oats and clover, and unimproved pasture dominated by bluegrass, forbs and shrubs. After the war, farms became larger and less diversified, shifting to continuous row crops (corn and soybeans). Effects of the transition were mitigated in the 1950s and 1960s by large-scale programs to reduce production of feed grains, idling millions of acres of farm land across the nation. Planted to grass/legume mixtures or allowed to revegetate naturally, these idle crop lands increased nest cover and brood habitat and populations of bobwhite, ring-necked pheasant and rabbit. During this period, more than 150,000 quail hunters harvested between 1.5 and 2.6 million birds in the nearly 900,000 days spent in the field annually. An increased demand for feed grains, elimination of land retirement programs and two successive severe winters (1977 and 1978) caused bobwhite numbers to plummet in the 1970s. But within a decade, overproduction of corn and soybeans brought about a land retirement program the Conservation Reserve Program 36 million acres of fragile land were idled nationally, including 822,000 acres in Illinois. Nest cover and brood habitat for bobwhite increased as a result of habitat improvements, and annual harvests reached 900,000 to 1 million birds in the early 1990s. But the pendulum swung again in the mid 1990s. Extreme weather reduced winter survival and summer production, and CRP grasslands grew into thick, unsuitable uniform stands because no management was required to thin grasses and maintain legumes and other broad-leaved plants. By 2000, annual harvests were reduced to less than 250,000 and hunter numbers declined by 60 percent.

4 August 2005 Issue 4 Shooting Tips & Trivia: Report Snakeheads In a joint effort by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Chicago, a team of fisheries biologists conducted electrofishing and net sampling surveys of fish in Burnham Harbor where a northern snakehead was caught by a shore angler on October 9. The sampling was implemented to determine if additional northern snakeheads are present in the harbor. No additional snakehead fish have been captured. Any angler catching a snakehead is urged to keep the fish and transport it to a DNR or a U.S. Fish and Wildlife office. Snakehead fish are on the list of injurious species in Illinois and their importation, possession and release in the state is prohibited. For further information, visit the Illinois Aquatic Nuisance Species website at index2.html. Coming to Sparta in 2006! To learn more about the World Shooting and Recreational Complex (Designed for Shooters/Built for Recreation), contact the Department of Natural Resources tollfree at , or visit the website at Shotgun Instructor Class We are looking for people who are interested in taking a Shotgun Instructor Class.
