2 President s Message by Scott Hobson Looking back, but always looking forward. As I sit here at the end of 2016, I find that most thoughts are those of the year we had at the CVCC, but in the blink of an eye I also find myself looking forward to what 2017 can and will bring our/your Conservation Club. The past year was full of all sorts of activities, like when we started off pheasant hunting with muzzleloaders in January, and the cold that blew through everyone s bones; the almost non-january-like weather for the Iron Man Shoot, and the perfect weather that we had for the Bow Shoots. But the one thing that keeps recurring in my thoughts is that this was only one aspect of how the year started; it was the members behind the scenes that made sure that every one of our events went off without a hitch. We had some good fund-raisers last year and found that scaling back on others was what was needed to ensure they were successful. Workdays were few and far between, but what we did have turned out well. Many of our members came out to help in those areas where they have the most interest, and what a great bunch of guys we have. This past year we talked some about the new Clubhouse project, and what we heard from many was we just do not have the money now to do this. So, a decision was made to put half of all fundraiser profits into the building fund and wait for a period of time so we can approach the project with money in hand. But with no long-range plan in place, the members decided to do something with the current Clubhouse. They put in place a plan to gut the inside of the building completely and make an open-concept floor plan, one that can be used for large gatherings. The big point of the redo and a large selling point was to turn the structure into an indoor archery range, something that we are all looking forward to carrying out. Work on this will not begin for a while, but we do have a plan in place, so workdays will be looked at to see if we can pull this much-needed project off. Now as I look ahead the Clubhouse will be a project that will take a lot of member time and effort, but as we have seen in the past, we have always come together to get things done. So that brings us to what will be the CVCC s next big event. This year we are starting the Bucks of Vernon County show that will be held at the Village Hall at the end of January on the 28 th, the same day of the Iron Man Shoot. This opens the door to the Military Rifle Shoot, bow shoots, and muzzleloader shoots and with those starts a whole new year. In April of 2017 we will have elections for officers and board members, and this will be my last. I need to focus more on other projects in my personal life, which after four years have piled up. I am confident that with the group of members we have here not only our events but our work projects too will get done with whoever is leading the charge to continue the growth of our club and see it prosper through the next year and beyond. 2

3 So while looking back is as important as looking ahead, we must always keep looking forward to what can be here at YOUR CLUB, the Coon Valley Conservation Club. CVCC Hunter Education Future Classes (Formerly Hunter Safety Education ) by Royce Curtis The Wisconsin DNR Head of Hunter Education has refused to grant the CVCC an exemption that would allow us to continue our highly popular and successful Hunter Safety class that we taught at the Coon Valley Village Hall for many years. Our request for this exemption was denied in spite of heavy pressure from 12 certified instructors, a petition with approximately 150 resident signatures, and lobbying from our State Assembly Representative Lee Nerison. We were directed to complete any regular class within a maximum of three weeks, which is not possible given the availability of instructors and of the Village Hall. Our only alternative is to offer the current On-Line version of the class with the one-day Field Day at the end. We are considering scheduling the Field Day for Saturday, March 25, Look for further announcements when this is set up on our website and in the Westby Times. The changes in the class requirements were the result of heavy political pressure to better serve the demands of the customers and to follow what appears to be a nationwide trend to certify hunters. There are currently 12 states that certify hunters on-line with no face-to-face interaction with instructors to demonstrate mastery of safety knowledge and skills. All testing is also done on-line. Based on the directives from the State it appears that Wisconsin will soon be following this trend. The Wisconsin Hunter Education Instructor Association (WHEIA) is currently working with instructors, politicians, and the DNR to address the future of Hunter Education in Wisconsin. If you feel hunters should NOT be certified in the future with NO face-to-face interaction and testing by instructors, please voice your feelings directly to the WHEIA, your local representatives and the WI DNR. Your advertisement could go here! (And if it did, it would reach over 430 CVCC members, predominantly in Vernon, La Crosse and Monroe counties, plus worldwide on our website.) Advertising rates: $50 for a full page for one year (four issues), $25 for half a page for one year. 3

5 Trap Shooting 2016 by Merv Broten 2016 was a great year for trapshooting at the Club. Our first improvement was to pour concrete pads for all five shooting positions. We were able to complete this before the start of the regular season on May 5 th. We still have some more fill to bring in and some landscaping and seeding to do, but our goal is to have that done next spring before shooting starts. We shot every Thursday evening (weather permitting) starting at 6:00 until the end of September, when lack of daylight forced us to quit. This fall, because of the mild weather, a few diehards who had flexible work hours that allowed them to start by 5:00 or who, like me, are retired, continued to show up to shoot throughout the month of October. We finally had to put our guns away for the season, but are looking forward to starting up again next year. Our main project for 2017 is to set up a sporting clays course. The plan is to set up our portable traps along a course that would allow the gunner to shoot at targets that would more closely represent hunting scenarios. Anyone who has any experience or ideas on this subject is encouraged to help us out! The 2017 trapshooting season will begin on Thursday, 4 May 2017, at 6:00 PM. The trap range will be open for the Iron Man Shoot on January 28 th and also the Cabin Fever Shoot on February 25 th. Stalingrad Shoot The Second Annual Stalingrad Shoot for military rifles will be held on Saturday, February 4 th, from 9:00 until 3:00. There will be two categories, Modern Rifle and Vintage Rifle. The course of fire will be the same, but there will be different rules for the rifle that may be used. Rules Vintage Rifle: 1. Open to any center-fire rifle manufactured before 1960 and issued to any military organization. 2. Rifle must have issue stock and issue iron sights. 3. Ammo should be of military power, whether surplus, factory or reloads. 4. No shooting jacket or slings. 5. $10.00 registration fee for each shooter. The course may be re-shot for an additional $2.00 fee. The same shooter may shoot additional rifles for a $5.00 fee. Rules Modern Rifle: 1. Open to any center-fire modern military-style rifle (AR, AK, etc.). 5

6 2. Rifle may have any stock and any non-magnification sights. Course of fire: 1. A total of 20 rounds will be fired. Five rounds from each of four positions: - Standing, - Kneeling or sitting, - Prone, - Bunker supported, which will actually be shooting off sandbags on the bench. 2. The positions can be fired in any order, but all five rounds must be fired sequentially. Only five rounds are to be loaded at a time. 3. All 20 rounds will be fired at one target. 4. Range will be 100 yards. Target: 1. A full-size silhouette target will be used, similar to the FBI target, with scoring rings. Targets will be supplied by the CVCC. 2. Scores will be calculated by adding all hits in the scoring rings. Last year we were cursed with mild weather, sunshine and temperatures in the 40s. This year we should all hope for sub-freezing temperatures with blowing snow! We should all be able to appreciate the experiences of the soldiers at the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir! Contact Merv Broten with any questions. Phone broten@mwt.net 6
