2 President s Report by Bruce King Here we are into fall once again, after what seemed like a warmer than normal summer, and that summer ended, as you all know, with record flooding. Your club suffered some damage during that flood, on the gun range and on other areas of the property. We will work on repairs as things dry up, and will get professional help as folks in the excavating business can free up some time. We were fortunate in that we did not have any structural issues due to the flood. We did get some rain down the wood stove chimney and many of our baby trout were washed out of the tank. Some of them died and some may have made it into the pond but that life holds perils of its own. My thoughts and prayers go out to those of you who suffered so much loss due to flooding. While I only helped a little with the cleanup there were many who did much, much more. No amount of thanks can cover the debt owed to those who gave so freely of their time. There was a definite sense of community that could be felt amongst all the devastation. Unfortunately, there are some instances where people took advantage of those less fortunate at a vulnerable time. This is proof that the devil is always present and ready to infest our lives. May God be with you and help you find a new sense of normalcy. On a lighter note, we have had a very busy summer. The remodeling project has been completed! I hope you got to visit the clubhouse at the chicken-que/open house. If not, stop down and have a look. We ended our summer archery league with a delicious steak fry and we had the 2018 Final Vintage Military Rifle Shoot. I missed the last two vintage shoots myself due to conflicting plans, so I will need to redouble my efforts for As I write this, there is a muzzleloader invitational shoot going on at your club and the Vernon County Fair is underway. I recently rejoined the Thursday afternoon trap-shooting group and I can guarantee you that if you stop down to shoot you will NOT be the worst shooter on the line. I am just doing my part to relieve my personal ammunition surplus. When you receive this newsletter, we will be days away from our Fall Banquet. I hope you have your ticket because at this time I am only aware of six remaining tickets. Make a point to stop down to your club. Shoot on the range, do some hunting or fishing, take in a meeting, or just come take a walk and enjoy the changing colors. There really is something for everyone at your club. If you don t see it right now, perhaps you can become involved and we will create an opportunity together. Til next time, Bruce King 2
3 Range Damage by Scott Hobson If you were to compare damages done by the late August heavy rain to what we have in town, your first thought would be no comparison, and you would be right. We did get hit hard, but it is only cosmetic and can be fixed given time. The rock piles have been picked up, some of the debris piles between the gate and pistol range have been cleared away and the cleanup on the pistol range has been started, but it is still early and the ground is still very wet, so time is what we need. Compared to others we are lucky, but it still hurts to look at what we had and what it looks like now. Left: Mud, debris and an apple tree overwhelm the pistol-range house. Right: The bank backstopping the pistol range, mostly washed away up to the fence line. All photos courtesy of Scott Hobson. CVCC Membership Options Ø Individual YEARLY -- $40.00 Ø Family YEARLY -- $60.00 Ø Senior (62+) YEARLY -- $20.00 Ø Youth (under 18) YEARLY -- $20.00 NOTE: Lifetime Membership is available for $ after five years of active member with all previous dues paid credited to this fee. 3

5 Future Fund by Bruce King Many times, in this publication, I have tried to stress the point that we are one club. We are a collection of many interests. Some functions are more profitable dollar-wise than others, but we must be cautious and not attach more importance to one area of interest over another. This is especially important because we are a non-profit, all-volunteer organization. It is only natural that a person will take ownership and pride in something they are passionate about. This is especially true if that person has also invested sweat equity into a project. Indeed, this pride and passion have resulted in quality work and successful events. We all like to step back at the end of a project and say Look what we have done. Many of you have done this for your club for many years. Thank you! What we often fail to remember is most everything we do was made possible in part because of those who came before us. There are very few active members today who were active when monthly meetings were in the village hall. Twenty years from today how many active members will there be? What will your club look like? Sometimes it s very easy just to live for today, especially as we get older and friends, neighbors and fellow club members pass away. As a club, we must have an eye for the future. What we offer our members today really only scratches the surface of what is possible. Bringing those possibilities to life will take more work, more passion and more pride. None of this will be possible if we don t grow our membership for the future. The future success of your club will be possible largely because of the work we do today and the planning we do for the future. They will stand on our shoulders as we have stood on the shoulders of those before us. Let this be considered as our Future Fund. Military Rifle Shoot by Merv Broten Our late summer Military Rifle Shoot was held on August 25. The weather was nice, which made for pleasant shooting. Thirteen shooters participated in the four different categories, shooting the course a total of 28 times. The results are as follows: Vintage Rifle First Place 191 Dean Ellefson, Yugoslav M48, caliber 8 X 57. Second Place 189 Tyrone Witzig, U.S. M1 Garand, caliber Third Place 178 Merv Broten, Swiss K-31, caliber 7,5 X 55. Fourth place 174 Gary Bendel, Swiss K-31, caliber 7,5 X 55. 5
6 Fifth place 172 3X Chad Olstad, U.S. M1903A3, caliber Modern Rifle First place 192 Dean Ellefson, AR, caliber 5,56 X 45. Second place 188 Keith Mathison, Armalite AR, caliber 5,56 X 45. Third place 183 Merv Broten, Colt SP-1 AR, caliber 5,56 X 45. Fourth place 170 Glenn Olstad, Colt SP-1 AR, caliber 5,56 X 45. Fifth place 153 J. Jackson, Colt SP-1 AR, caliber 5,56 X 45. Junior Vintage Rifle First place 67 J. Jackson, Swedish M1896, caliber 6,5 X 55. Junior Modern Rifle First place 178 J. Jackson, Colt SP-1 AR, caliber 5,56 X 45. Second place 71 Holden Olstad, AR, caliber 5,56 X 45. Congratulation to all the shooters who placed!! As usual, everyone had a lot of fun. Our next shoot will be the winter shoot in February Trapshooting by Merv Broten The 2018 trapshooting season is almost over. We will continue to shoot through the month of October, but will be starting at 5:00 p.m. because of the decreasing daylight. We had a successful season with only a few cancelations due to rain. Even though the trap house is located at the bottom of the valley, and is below ground level, we were fortunate not to have any floodwater run into it. There was an inch or two of water that seeped in due to the soil being so saturated, but it was easily pumped out with the sump pump. Unfortunately, we also ended the season with a problem with the Laporte thrower, in that it continues to blow fuses. This is an issue that I will attempt to troubleshoot and fix. In the meantime, we will be using the Promatic portable thrower to finish out the season. We invite anyone who would like to get in a little bird hunting practice to come out and join us on Thursdays! 6
