A banquet in his honor put on by the Delano General Federated Women's Club will be held on April 13th at the Delano American Legion. Dale is saving his speech for that event. Mike Speckel brought up concerns he had with donating money to the Delano Wrestling Association every year. In the past the clubs rules were to only donate to conservation related organizations. Mike opposes to donating to the wrestling association in this way. It was brought up that the reason it was done was because the club had trouble staffing the 4th of July functions and that it was allowable because the wrestlers are actually working for the money so it's not a donation. After further discussion it was determined to table this discussion and take it up at the next board meeting. Don Fern had three guns for sale at the meeting - a 12 gauge pump shotgun, a single shot 12 gauge shotgun and a 20 gauge pump shotgun. There was a concern with the lack of parking at the club - the barriers put in after the river bank was fixed are just temporary and will be moved this year. Parking will get better in the summer. Mike Speckel will be attending the next 4th of July Committee meeting that will be held in February and will update the club at the next meeting. Mike said there will be another pedal tractor pull this year. Election of Officers - Jim Klatt accepted to be President for his second year. 5 VOLUME 35,NUMBER 2 THE DELANO SPORTSMAN PAGE 5 Letter to the Editor Doesn t want to see guns banned I received this in the mail. The author sent this to The Pioneer; a weekly newspaper from the Long Lake area. The author is not a member, but he makes an interesting point: Blaming guns for serial murders makes as much sense as blaming needles for heroin addiction. I am not pro-gun or anti-gun; I am pro-peace. I do not own an assault weapon, and I do not hunt. This has been a nation of guns long before these massacres began, so guns are not the issue. Cops own guns and they don t shoot school children. A serious discussion has to start with addressing real causes. Could one of those causes be a culture that embraces violence? From TV to movies to pulp fiction to video games, U.S. consumers spend billions to be entertained by murder and mayhem. Could another factor be story lines in which gunning down the bad guys is consistently presented as the hero s ultimate solution to his problems? In the movies, when families schools, churches, city councils, police, etc., fail to remedy an intolerable situation, the hero s answer is to kill the antagonists in an epic blaze of glory. So we should not be surprised in real life when an impressionable young man decides that guns are the answer to relentless bullying, mistreatment or perceived injustice. Perhaps factor #3 is a culture that elevates the triumph and importance of individuals over and above community. We certainly take great pride in ourselves as a nation of individuals. Many of our ancestors came her to escape corrupt religious and political communities (native lands). And many came to exploit individual talents in a country that rewards individual effort. Fleeing antagonistic communities, worshiping one s own way, and pulling oneself up by the bootstraps are all noble enterprises, but when we place the individual above the community and present violence as a viable means for individuals to address communal injustice, don t we then place society under constant threat from deranged elements? Could factor #4 be that many young men simply don t have adequate coping mechanisms or family support and closeness when under intense social pressure? Too many bows grow up with a lack of attention from two parents. While writing this, Nirvana s generational anthem All Apologies plays on itunes and Kurt Cobain sings, All alone is all we are. Could another factor be moral relativism? Gun control is not the solution: Prohibition does not work. Our 18th Amendment didn t end drunkenness or alcoholism; the War on Drugs for 30 years has failed, and restricting ownership of weapons and ammo will not end serial killings. It will simply create a lucrative black market. Kids always know where to buy drugs, and deranged young men will always find a way to buy assault weapons, and the killing will continue. This letter is not because I care about guns I don t. I care about peace. Arguing over legislation is a form of denial and only distracts us from looking in the mirror and making an honest assessment of what we have become as a society. It distracts us from the real issue society must reform itself, not its gun laws. Tim Hulst Mound Elections! The results are in Dan Kittok was reelected Secretary and Joe Kittok was reelected as Treasurer! Congratulations to both of you. Keep up the great work! On the Lighter Side... A woman goes to the local newspaper officer to see that the obituary for her recently deceased husband is published. The obituary editor informs her that there is a charge of 50 cents per word. She pauses, reflects, and then says, Well then, let it read Fred Brown Died. Amused at the old woman s thrift, the editor tells her that there is a seven-word minimum for all obituaries. She thinks it over and says, in that case, let it read Fred Brown Died...Shotgun for Sale.

6 PAGE 6 THE DELANO SPORTSMAN VOLUME 35,NUMBER 2 Legislative Update There are several bills pertaining to hunting, shooting and conservation which members may want to be aware of and contact their legislators. HF598: Allows peace or conservation officers to kill dogs that are pursuing big game. The change limits the ability to kill dogs chasing large game to peace and conservation officers (it used to allow any person during certain times of year) HF585: Adds a requirement of Blaze Orange for ground blinds during deer season. They are recommending a total of 144 square inches (1 square foot) visible in any direction. HF456: Changes some requirements regarding bodygripping traps, as far as placement. HF218: Allows for permanent free deer licenses for disabled veterans. HF169: Allows scopes on Muzzleloaders for taking deer during muzzleloading season. HF135: Allows those diagnosed as visually impaired to use laser sights while hunting. HF327: Allows the use of 3 lines for taking fish through the ice. In addition, there are currently 16 different bills specifically addressing the possession, sales, and transfer of firearms; especially those designated as assault weapons. Some of those bills are beneficial; HF419 specifically identifies the state s rights and seeks to not enforce any new federal firearm legislation. However, many others are designed to stop the manufacture, sales and possession of certain types of firearms and magazines in Minnesota. Bills such as HF241 which describes what the state would count as an assault weapon and how citizens would either register them or surrender them later this year. To be a good citizen, one needs to know what their elected officials are doing. They work for us. Take some time to look over the bills and send a letter, or phone call to your state senator or representative and give them your opinion. From the internet, it s easy to follow these bills and get a hold of your elected officials. The site is: From here, you can look up every bill that is being introduced to the legislature, who wrote them, and what is being done about them. The founding fathers expected the citizens to participate. Do your part! NRA Club Leadership Webinars Running a club or association is not always an easy task. Sure, it helps when you have members that go back generations; but there is always something new to know about managing a sportsmen s club. For those that are interested, the National Rifle Association is offering a number of web-based seminars ( Webinars ) on Club Leadership and Development. Webinars are broadcast on Thursdays at 1:00pm EST (Noon, local time). This year s topics are: February 7th: NRA Endorsed Merchant Services March 21: NRA Day May 30: Media Relations July 18: So you want to open a range August 22: NRA Endorsed Insurance September 26: NRA Collegiate Shooting/NRA Club Champion Program November 7: Membership Recruitment and Retention To register, go to:

7 VOLUME 35,NUMBER 2 Special Volunteer Needed THE DELANO SPORTSMAN Ice Safety: Everyone s Business PAGE 7 The Minnesota Conservation Federation will hold it s quarterly board meeting on March 9th at the Belle Plaine VFW. The meeting is open to all members and begins at 9:15am. We would like to make sure we are represented there and find out what s happening. If you can attend (and satisfy your volunteer requirement), please contact Jim Klatt. Ice Safety: Everyone s Business It wouldn t be Minnesota if we weren t happy to spend time outdoors year-round.including fishing, cross-country skiing (when there s no groomed trails) and snowmobiling on area lakes. Still, the great changes in weather we ve seen in recent years means that these activities need to be treated with the respect they deserve with regards to the ice. There have been several vehicles through the ice just in central Minnesota, resulting in at least 4 fatalities so far this season. The DNR offers a web site full of great information to help keep you safe on the ice...particularly since we are now heading toward the late season when houses will come off; but people will still be going out on the lakes to fish. You can get all the information here: Some important things: Check the thickness before you go out Have a survival plan Carry tools such as ice picks or screwdrivers to help pull you out...just in case Stay away from channels...moving water=thin ice Park cars at least 50 feet apart. Move them regularly. If your car goes through...try to get out before it sinks. DNR: No 2013 Moose Season The DNR has suspended the 2013 Moose season and is studying the sudden decrease in the moose population. A precipitous 35 percent decline in the population from 2012 to 2013 prompted DNR to suspend moose hunting in Minnesota and underscores the need for this project. Using funding from the Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund, the $1.2 million project is using the latest technology and an unprecedented amount of DNR staff to learn more about the mortality of this iconic species. It will build on research that is ongoing or planned by other agencies and universities. Moose inhabiting Minnesota always have been on the southern edge of their species range. Historically, moose have occupied the northwest and northeast portions of the state. During the last two decades, northwest moose have all but disappeared from the landscape despite attempts to improve habitat and the discontinuation of a hunting season. The northeast moose population is on the verge of a similar decline. Even among veteran researchers now out in the field, the massive and majestic animals continue to be a source of awe. And the possibility of their disappearance from Minnesota remains troubling. When you watch a collared moose disappear back into the brush you hope the data will help unravel the mortality mystery that is puzzling wildlife managers," said Erika Butler, DNR wildlife veterinarian and leader of the adult moose mortality portion of the research project.
