1 The Sportsman Published by the Tacoma Sportsmen s Club VOLUME 830 JUNE 2017 ISSUE 6 President s Report This year marks the 68 th annual Fishing Derby put on by The Tacoma Sportsmen s Club. Mark Bussey and his group of volunteers have been working hard to make this event special again this year. Thousands of kids have enjoyed the derby throughout the years. Many youngsters catch their first fish with the help of TSC volunteers. Come out this Saturday and enjoy the efforts of our Sportsmen. The Piel range upgrade is moving along. The weather is dictating our pace as the rain continues. There is still a lot of work to be completed but we will continue to move forward. The Iron Amos archery shoot is another long running event that will be held June 3rd and 4th. Come out and enjoy a fun course and good people. I am sure the archery committee could use some set up help. If you have some extra time and would like to volunteer with set up contact David Todd or the office staff. Once again please check the calendar for special events that may close a range you want to use on the weekends. Your club is a busy place and members can always fall back on the public ranges. Gary Higginbotham, President Great Events this month June 3rd & 4th Come out for the 3 D Iron Amos Archery Shoot June 4th Steel Pistol Challenge Running Deer rifle shoots have begun. Next one June 8th. Come out and give it a try. The Bacon Rifle Shoot is the next week and you might win bacon! June 11th Pacific Int. Trap shoot Dad time Father s Day, June 18th. June 24th NRA Youth SportsFest Member Ranges will be closed for Hunter Ed Walk Thru testing June 24th. The 600 yard competition shoot will be on June 25th, from 9am-2pm. Public Rifle Range will be closed, as well as the Archery walk-thru. Don t forget to come out and support Club Café! Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings, open to the public. Tuesday night specials, everyone welcome! And extra hours for some of the above events too. Check the calendar.

4 Hello Members, Thank you, Jim Williams for the May program. For all that were not at the May General Membership meeting Jim presented a program on The Friends of the NRA which we at TSC support. Jim explained why it is a good program and how it works, as well as how the money and grants are issued. Grants are applied for and the committee reviews them then decides who qualifies that year. TSC has been given a grant this year which will help rebuild the Piel Range. In the past, we have gotten grants for archery targets, trap and skeet machines and sporting clay machines to name a few. The purpose of the Friends is to support shooting programs and range improvements throughout the United States and the money raised in Washington for the most part stays in the state. Those that benefit are ranges, boy scouts, FFA, and local school programs to name a few. Once again thank you Jim, it was a good presentation. Next month is by Donn Moyer with a program on Hunter Education so don't miss it.
