1 Title: Magical Classes Leaders: Potter, Wesley, Granger # of participants: 8-20 Ages: 6-12 Theme: Potter Ideal Location: Quite place, classroom would be best. Equipment: Pre- Activity Diagram: Provide a visual diagram of how the space should be set up, including equipment placement, that sets the tone for the event. Care of magical creatures potions transfiguration dueling Goal & Objectives: The goal of this activity is to improve on following directions. Given the resources, participants will listen to the facilitator and complete tasks in the allotted time. Given ingredients, the participants will follow a recipe and complete it in ten minutes.

2 Risk Management Concerns: Contingency Plan: One possible risk for this event is participants might be allergic to some ingredients in the potions. To manage this risk, facilitators should ask prior to the event if anyone is allergic to the materials being used. If someone is, adapt the potion s recipe to exclude the ingredient(s). Another possible risk is for younger participants to think the play dough is edible. To manage this risk, facilitators should make it clear to participants that play dough is not edible. The facilitator must also overlook the participants closely during the activities that require play dough. No contingency plan necessary due to location. My name is, this is and, and today we will be taking a journey through popular classes at Hogwarts, the school of witchcraft and wizardry. 15 minutes Group Division House Quiz: 1. Pass out pre- printed quizzes Given the choice, would you rather invent a potion that would guarantee you 1. Power 2. Love 3. Wisdom 4. Glory Four boxes are placed before you. Which would you rather try and open? 1. The small pewter box, unassuming and plain, with a scratched message upon it that reads I open inly for the worthy. 2. The small tortoiseshell box, embellished with gold, inside which some small creature seems to be squeaking 3. The gleaming jet black box with a silver lock and key, marked with a mysterious rune that you know to be the mark of Merlin. 4. The ornate golden casket, standing on clawed feet, whose inscription wars that both secret knowledge and unbearable temptation lie within Which of the following would you most hate people to call you? 1. Ordinary 2. Selfish 3. Ignorant 4. Cowardly

Secrets about the castle Which road tempts you most? 1. The narrow, dark, lantern-lit alley 2. The wide, sunny, grassy lane 3. The cobbled street lined with ancient buildings 4. The twisting, leaf-strewn path through woods Moon or stars? 1. Stars 2. Moon Left or right? 1. Left 2. Right Mostly 1: Slytherin Mostly 2: Hufflepuff Mostly 3: Ravenclaw Mostly 4: Gryffindor If you land on a tie, choose the house you think you relate to. Slytherin: students who exhibit such traits as cunning, resourcefulness, and ambition. Hufflepuff: Dedication; Hard Work; Fair play; Patience; Kindness; Tolerance; unafraid of Toil Ravenclaw: values intelligence, knowledge, and wit Gryffindor: emphasizes the traits of courage as well as "daring, nerve, and chivalry," and thus its members are generally regarded as brave, though sometimes to the point of recklessness. Have participants circle up into their houses and introduce themselves to one another. 2 minutes Transition Now that the sorting hat has placed you in your house we will begin our first class: care of magical creatures 20 minutes Care of magical creatures 1. Give the participants a piece of paper and some markers. 2. Ask them to design their own magical creature. 3. When they are finished give them play dough in a variety of colors. 4. Have them create their drawn creature with the clay. 5. Hold a contest for the scariest, most magical, most creative and best all around creatures. Winners earn 5 house points.

4 2 minutes Transition Great job everyone! So far house is in the lead! Lets continue our lessons into transfiguration. 20 minutes Transfiguration Transfiguration is about turning one object into another. 1. Give each house a few colors of play dough. 2. Each house sends one representative to the Transfiguration professor, who whispers to them an object (i.e. owl, broomstick, Fluffy, dragon, dementor, etc.). 3. The house reps return to their teams, or houses, and try to get them to say the word by using the play dough. So if the word is owl they will usually try to make an owl from the clay. 4. The first house to say the correct word loud enough for the professor to hear earns a point for their house. The Transfiguration Challenge is played until one house reaches 7 points. 2 minutes Transition Now that we have mastered transfiguration, lets move forward to a more challenging class, potions. 20 minutes Potions 1. Have each house sit at designated groups of desks 2. There will be containers with each ingredient in them. 3. First team to complete correct potions will gain 10 points for their house. 4. The participants can eat/drink their potions Felix Felicis --Liquid Luck-- Ingredients: Small measure Pond Slime 5 measures Infusion of Wormwood Juice from 4 squeezed Bat Spleens Small Measure of Horklump Juice Several pinches Octopus Powder Amortentia --Love Potion -- Ingredients: 10 Puffer-Fish Eyes A pinch of Ground Mandrake Root 5 measures Mermaid Tears

5 Small measure of Dragon Blood Dash of Exploding Ginger Eyelash Dragon Blood: Cranberry Juice Horklump Juice: Lemonade Infusion of Wormwood: Strawberry soda Mermaid Tears: Sprite Pond Slime: partially mashed kiwi Puffer-fish Eyes: popping bobas Octopus Powder: Tang Powder Ground Mandrake Root: Kool-Aid powder Exploding Ginger Eyelash: Pop-rocks Bat Spleen: Gushers 1 measure = 1 cup Small measure = ¼ Cup 1 dash = 1 TBSP 1 pinch- 1 tsp. 2 minutes Transition Congratulation! You have completed potions class! Now it is time for one of the most exciting classes, dueling! 20 minutes Dueling 1. Duelers must have their wands. 2. Duelers should be from different houses. 3. After clearing a space to duel, duelers will come to the center and bow to each other as a sign of respect. They will then return to their dueling positions. 4. Duelers can use any spell except the unforgivable curses. 5. The professor will count to three. On three duelers will point their wands at each other and yell out their spells. 6. Protego will block any spell but should be followed up with an offensive spell. Protego can only be used once per person during a single duel. 7. The first person to completely yell out their spell wins, unless it was blocked. If a spell is blocked then the person to completely yell out their second spell wins. 8. Each pair of duelers will duel three times. The overall winner earns a point for their house. 9. Print out the spells and tape them on the wall so that duelers can refresh their memories right before the duel. Along with the spells used for dueling put up other spells that participants would be interested in. If any of the participants are caught cursing other campers using one of the unforgivable curses (avada kedavra, imperio or

6 crucio) they lose a point for their house. 2 minutes Transition Congratulations! You have completed basic training in Hogwarts classes. After all the classes have ended, house won! You guys won the house cup! 10 minutes Debrief Did you have fun today? What was your favorite class? Why was that your favorite class? Did you find it hard to follow the directions exactly? What did you have trouble with? 2 minutes Conclusion You are all now official Hogwarts students! Today we learned how to follow directions in different situations. Remember that all of you can be great students by following directions! We hope you all had fun today and you can share your day with your family and friends. Everyone have a magical night!
