1 Name Period Pfeil Congratulations!! You are participating in the Olympics and it s a BIG DEAL. You will be competing at every station so remember to come with your game face on!! Directions: You will be divided into 5 groups. You will spend 15 minutes at each group. The last minute will be clean-up and you will leave your station in primo condition for the next group. Groups: #1 Station #1 & #3: Water Balance Beam (penny dropper lab) & Paperclip Backstroke #2 Station #2: ph Testing Lab #3 Station #4: DEMO: Water in Tubes and Water Slalom #4 Station #5: Flyswatter over water terms #5 Station #6: Memory over water terms PS: *You only need to record your own information at each station Unless it states otherwise (Ex: Station 1) STATION #1-Water Balance Beam You are starting at Station # Competition: 1. Make a hypothesis of how many drops a penny can hold on top of it before one falls off. 2. Record all hypothesis in your group in the data table below. 3. Place one drop of water on a penny, one at a time, until one falls off. 4. Record each competitor s results in the data table. 5. Determine medal winner for this round. 2 STATION #2-pH Testing Lab Competition: You will be testing several different products to find their ph level. You and your competitors will make a hypothesis as to whether the product is an acid or a base and its ph number. You will receive one point for the correct prediction of acid vs. base and you will receive two additional points if the number (rounded) you predicted was in fact exactly correct. Competitor with the most points wins the Gold Medal! Good luck!! 3 STATION #3-Paper Clip Backstroke Competition: First of all you must know this competition takes patience and a steady hand! 1. Make a hypothesis of how many tries it will take to float a paper clip on top of the water. 2. Write your hypothesis into the data table below for a big and small paper clip. 3. Balance a paper clip on the very end of a fork prong. 4. Place it in a bowl of water and attempt to float the paper clip. 5. Record the number of attempts it took you to actually float both the big and small paper clip. 6. Tally points: person closest to hypothesis without going over gets a point. 4 STATION #4-Water in Tubes and Water Slalom Directions: In this station you will observe an unusual property of water. You will answer the following questions about what you are observing. DEMO #1: Water in Tubes Observe the celery in the glass jars. Explain below in detail what you see happening to the celery and share the property of water being demonstrated and how it works. If you need to refer to your Water Notes, please do so. Properties of Water observed: & &. 5 STATION #5-Flyswatter: Water Vocabulary Competition: You will have 17 water terms to identify in the Flyswatter Game. A tie will be determined by an honest round of rock/paper/scissors. Good luck!! Rotate to: Station #6-Memory STATION #6-Memory: Water Vocabulary Competition: You will have 17 water terms to identify in the Memory Game. To help you along, the green cards have the vocab words and the yellow cards have the definitions. Record the person with the most matches at the 9 minute mark. If there is a tie, rock-paper-scissors. STATION #6 Medal Winner: Clean Up: Scramble and lay out the cards on the table for the next group.
