A Lackluster 2010 Bike Expo Supported by the ZEG Group Europe's largest bicycle purchasing group the Bike Expo show has successfully made it to its second year.

1 A Lackluster 2010 Bike Expo Supported by the ZEG Group Europe's largest bicycle purchasing group the Bike Expo show has successfully made it to its second year. Although the timing and atmosphere were less than ideal, numerous ZEG vendors still participated in hope of gaining some more orders. In order to boost enthusiasm, ZEG held a dealer members' convention attended by close to a thousand persons on the day before the show. ZEG also tried to enliven the mood with a beer festival, and arranged for member store personnel to see products and place orders at the show. Text & Photos : Daphne Chen I n its second year BIKE EXPO proved that its significance has considerably increased. More than 5,700 industry professionals came to the event, representing a substantial increase of 14 percent. Add to this the more than 20,000 consumers who came to BIKE EXPO during the weekend the show was open to the public. The international character also improved; close to 24 percent of trade visitors hailed from foreign countries. Overall, visitors came from a total of 55 countries; the largest delegations came from Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and the neighboring Cen- 32 BMU 2010 Autumn

tral Eastern European countries. Exhibitors commented favorable on the high quality of the trade visitors and the high degree of interest expressed by consumers.

Overall, 257 exhibitors (+ 22 percent) presented 392 brands (+ 45 percent) on 55.000 sqm (+17 percent) of exhibit space. This translates into two-digit growth in all relevant areas of the exposition.

Both segments are developing into growth generators for the cycling industry. At BIKE EXPO 2010, these topics were presented with the help of a multi-faceted palette of models and technologies. Traditional brands as well as newcomers used BIKE EXPO to introduce their latest models and designs. Furthermore, the bike tourism industry was once again very pleased with BIKE EXPO as their presentation platform. The training program with technical seminars and presentations was very well received. 3 E-Bikes and Pedelecs The Copenhagen Wheel The project was conceived and developed by the SENSEable City Lab for the Kobenhavns Kommune. Smart, responsive and elegant, the Copenhagen Wheel is a new emblem for urban mobility. It transforms ordinary bicycles quickly into hybrid e-bikes that also function as mobile sensing units. It maps pollution levels, traffic congestion, and road conditions in real-time. The wheel s sensing unit also captures effort level and information about surroundings, including road conditions, carbon monoxide, NOx, noise, ambient temperature and relative humidity. In addition, the Copenhagen Wheel captures the energy dissipated while cycling and braking and saves it for when the rider needs a bit of a boost. PG-Bikes blacktrail The Regensburg-based bicycle manufacturer introduces a luxury bike for close to 60,000 Euro. The 1,200 Watt motor driving the Blacktrail can reach speeds up to 100 km/h with a range of up to 200 km. The Blacktrail s carbon frame is based on the Formula 1 technology by UBC Engineering. The E-Bike is produced in a limited edition of 667 pieces.

Of course, some consumer-oriented firms felt that the show was quite effective.
