3 R E R E P O R T from Jack Hanifan June The 22 nd Annual John Stim Memorial is now history. It was a success due to the efforts of many of our members and our friends from Northern New Jersey Region. I hope I do not forget anyone but I want to thank them all. Our Race Chairman Gene Tricozzi and our Registrar Nancy Boice deserve special mention. Nancy did an outstanding job taking care of registration for three races. Gene coordinated the entire weekend. Russ Burckhard did whatever was asked of him, picking up the MoHud Van, delivering ice, picking up and setting up for Saturday s lunch and more. Clark Nicholls and Dave Hathaway recruited a great Pit staff. Peter Kroth and Diane O Connor did a great job with our Grid. Rich Welty with the assistance of Bill Ettheron took care of number of Annuals and did a stellar job with compliance. Butch O Connor made sure the radios worked and transported workers. BK Karl had his shop give priority to the MoHud van, so that it was available on Saturday. NNJR RE Chris Mosley and his wife Linda organized the Saturday evening Social event. Pete Smith did a tremendous job organizing the Friday night dinner. Rich Alexander recruited a very experienced F&C contingent, a little light on Friday but great numbers on Saturday. Jim and Trish Bucci did Sound Control in a manner that would have made Dave McClumpha proud. Peter Watson from NYR stepped in to fill the position of Chief Starter and was the NESCCA worker of the event. Marie Sheehe with the assistance of Lenore Panas, Connie McIntyre and Nancy Huber among others provided quick and accurate results. Roly Heacox was invaluable as my assistant and Dave Panas headed a tower crew of Bob Introne, Peter Roberts and Walt Huber. Our Exec Steward, Earl Hurlbut was Tech Steward assisted by Kathy Barnes on Saturday. Dave Canavan took charge of the raffle for the Hoosier Tires that Jim Garry secured for us. Lisa Hanifan did her usual outstanding performance creating the logo for our trophies and event program. Todd Boice in addition to working Registration and Tech, printed our Entry List. Last but not least Greg Rickes wrote some of the Race dedications and with the assistance of Craig Robertson was the voice of Lime Rock Park. Thank you one and all!! 4 4 June 2010 John Stim Memorial Event Attached are the results of the John Stim Memorial Event, presented by the Mohawk Hudson Region SCCA, Inc. in conjunction with the Northern New Jersey Region SCCA, Inc. This event was held on the 1.53 mile Lime Rock Park road course May 14-15, 2010 in Lime Rock, CT. The national races were run under sanction #10-N-1064-S. The event also included a restricted regional race under sanction # 10-R-1065-S, and Round 2 of the Team Di Pro-IT series, an enduro run under sanction #10-E-1066-S. There were 258 cars on course divided into eight groups 173 cars in six national races, 42 cars in the one regional race, and 43 cars in the TeamDI Pro IT series race. National race groups one through six ran two 22.5 minute qualifying sessions (by group) on Friday, which set the starting grids for Saturday s 30 lap races. The regional race group ran a 12 minute qualifying session on Saturday morning, setting the grid for their afternoon 20 minute race. The TeamDI Pro IT group ran a 15 minute qualifying session on Saturday morning, which set the grid for their 45 minute race that afternoon. Temperatures were in the high 70s to low 80s on Friday, with partly cloudy skies. Saturday s temperatures were in the mid-70s with clear skies, and all sessions were run on a dry track. The AMB transponder system was used for timing the qualifying sessions, and scoring for the races was accomplished with three independent lapcharts. There were 15 workers in Timing & Scoring representing the Glen, Mohawk Hudson, Northern New Jersey, New England, and New York, and Philadelphia SCCA regions. Senior members were: Marie Sheehe, Results; Joe Boruch, Timing Captain; Judy Bloeser, Scoring Captain, and Lenore Panas, Results Distribution. 21 SOLO SOLO SOLO SOLO Report by Russ Burckhard The Solo season is off and running. Despite the setback of having our first points event canceled, we had a successful test and tune/school at Adirondack Community College. 28 entrants came out for some seat time and instruction. I want to thank all of the instructors who helped out; the students seemed happy with what they were taught and were able to put it to good use as their times were dropping throughout the day. Jim Garry did all of the work to set up for a test and tune at Seneca on May 8 th. Unfortunately he was not feeling well and did not attend. Ken Hurd took over for him. With help from Arne Beebe and the rest of the competitors, they were al able to put on the event. The entrants got a bunch of runs in before the winds and rain moved in. The event was called off when the portable toilet was blown over. There s no new info on the new site I m working on but I ll keep all informed.the rest of the schedule hasn t changed and I don t foresee any besides the possible addition of an event in August. I have been on a mission over the last few weeks to see what happens at other events. The first event I went to was the PDX that the Patroon BMW Club put on at Lime Rock. I wandered around and watched what went on over the course of a day. I sat in on the student classes and then had the pleasure of being Gene Tricozzi s co-pilot. Besides the ride I took with DJ at our race last year to distribute water and pick up workers in his pick up, it was the first time I was on the track. Gene did a great job of showing me the various lines as we flew around the track in his Mazda RX-8. It is amazing how fast a 20 minute session goes by when you are having fun. I am sure it is different when you are driving, but I could have rode around all day. The event itself was very well executed, the workers were professional, and the classroom training was informative and relevant to the needs of the students. Another event I went to was the AMEC speed cross that was held at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta. It looked like a fun event and the participants that I talked to agreed. The only negative that I have about the event was a big one. Safety was not a high priority according to what I observed. I explained what I saw to the AMEC members and they said that changes will be made going forward at future events. The final event I attended was the Mohud race at Lime Rock. I wish I could tell you how the racing was, but I only saw a few minutes worth all weekend. I was pretty busy running errands and making sure that all of the workers were fed and had plenty of water. With all of my running around, I was able to see all of the work that goes on to make the race successful. All of the workers and stewards made it look easy. You could see the pride of a job well done at the after work parties. All of their hard work is deeply appreciated. Also I would like to extend a special thank you to the Northern New Jersey Region for all of their help in the joint effort of the event. UPCOMING SCHEDULE May 23 - ACC May NE Divisional Championship Solo hosted by WDC Region FedEx Field in Landover Maryland. 22 22 June 2010 MoHud Board Meeting Minutes April 26, 2010 Treasurer s Report: Chip provided a summary of the months income and expenses. Knock Off Editor: no report. Solo/Rally Cross: Russ reported that the Region has been given a sizable number of trophies (from the Pittsfield Rallycross that was scheduled this past winter season but was not held due to bad weather). These are available for future use by the Region. The recently held Test/Tune at Adirondack Community College had 28 entries. Toilets were a problem the Port-a-Johns were not delivered. The school s security graciously opened up one of the buildings for use by the participants. Russ offered to reimburse the school for the use of their facilities the same dollar amount that would have been paid for the Port-a-John rental. The school administration accepted the offer and thanked Mo-Hud. We will probably continue to do this in the future. The Board discussed the legality of the Mo-Hud loaner helmets. Jack indicated that the current helmets continue to be legal. Russ is continuing to research other potential autocross sites that we might be able to use this year. Membership: Jack indicated that we need to get more detailed information about the Volunteer Worker Program, especially the necessary forms that need to be completed and returned to National. Workers at the upcoming LRP Mo-Hud race may be able to take advantage of this program. Activities: Dick Stewart is planning on a Go Kart evening as well as a golf day. Details to follow. Dick will also check on availability of the Troy Elks Club for the holiday banquet. LRP Mo-Hud Race Jack provided a status report - Supps are completed Registration is going well - there are already 70+ registrants for the National race Jim Garry is working with Hoosier, we will be getting 4 Hoosier tires. Food plans are continuing to be made for lunch/dinner for the volunteer workers. Final preparations are also being made for the Saturday night race worker party Arrangements are being made to transport the Mo-Hud van to LRP, as well as getting the scales to the track. Certified weights are required for the scales Rick Welty will coordinate. Sound equipment NJ has the sound equipment and will bring it to the track. Sunoco $250 raffle will be held. PDX Monticello track inspection is scheduled for Sunday, May 9 th. The next Board meeting will be held on June 2 at 6:30 pm, prior to the monthly meeting.

A volunteer is still needed to drive the Mo-Hud van to LRP (Dick Stewart may be able to help). Tech Inspection location at LRP has been changed. The recent driver school at NHIS was well attended. At the NHIS regional, there was some questions about the legality of certain Miata roll cages. The CRB reviewed the matter, and ruled in favor of the competitor. Brian Blizzard finished 3 rd in the Regional. New Business - Dave McClumpa s family thanked the Mo-Hud membership for their recent support and for the flowers that were sent in Dave s memory. A motion was approved to purchase a brick at the Saratoga Museum in Dave s memory. Monticello track inspection for the August PDX is scheduled for noon, May 9 th. John Sheridan provided a brief report on SCCA status: SCCA Inc income is running ahead of what was budgeted for the year. Membership is ahead of where it was last year, but still a bit less than 2007 s numbers. % National racing - # of participants are ahead of last year. % Regional racing - # of participants are a bit lower than last year. % Solo - # of participants are a bit lower than last year. CRB has lowered the racing age from 16 to 15. Six 15 year olds are now licensed, one whom is doing extremely well in competition. Racing gear manufactured by Impact has been de-certified. 26 26 June 2010 Evo autocross school weekend at Devens, May 8 and Five of MoHud s Miata drivers made the trek eastward to Devens Airfield on Mother s Day weekend for the Evolution Performance Driving School ( ) Greg and Susan Cuda ran in the AMEC autocross at the Malta Speedway on Saturday, then drove out to Devens for Sunday s school. Kevin Gebert, Will Schambach, and Tom Moeller attended both days. The weather was much less spring-like than the MoHud test-and-tune at ACC a few weeks earlier. Saturday was in the 50 s and ranged from drizzle to downpour to thunder and lightning. Sunday cleared up, with a mix of sun and clouds, and 20+ mph winds all day long. At 7am, the 40-degree temperature had a windchill in the 20 s. On the bright side, there was no concern of dirt on the course, because it had all been blown to Rhode Island. The organizers were expecting wind, as evidenced by the pair of sandbags inside each of the porta-potties. Phase 1 had two instructors per group, while phase 2 had three instructors. Will and Tom had Bruce Bellom and Ken Frey leading phase 1. For phase 2 we got Pat Salerno (a partner in the Evo School organization), Heyward Wagner and John Winchester. Five MoHud drivers brought their four Miatas for the Sunday sessions

27 27 Slalom cone split in half during Phase 1 school Saturday Phase 1 is appropriate for complete novices, but is also a good beginning-of-the-season refresher for those of us who can t autocross year-round. Most of the emphasis is on car placement and looking ahead, so there are no surprises while you re driving. The first three runs of the day are timed, then compared with the last three runs of the day. Phase 2 builds on the previous day s skills, but moves the focus to mental work. The course was set up when we arrived, and we were given just one walkthrough, after having the course verbally explained while we huddled at the start. There was also no timing the instructors assessed each run and encouraged drivers to figure out what went wrong and fix it on the next run. After lunch, the course was changed slightly, three different times, which helped prevent driving from memory. By the end of the day, even without timing equipment, it was obvious that our group had all improved immensely. Even though the school weekend was organized by the BMW club of Boston, there were plenty of non-german cars. Among the attendees, I counted 8 Miatas, a trailered Eagle Talon, and a Nissan GT-R. The school hosted 55 people at 5 sessions Saturday, and 60 people at 5 sessions Sunday. There were also two sold-out phase 3 classes scheduled, but instructor Andy Hollis had to cancel. Thanks to Steve Hazard of the Boston BMWCCA for getting the schools together, and for filling me in on some details by phone after the event. On Sunday July 11 th they re running a non-evo school with many of the same instructors and Steve promises runs. Visit for more information. Tom Moeller
