1 SOUTHLAND ATHLETICS NEWS No Clubs, please print this and pass on to your members or send their address to so more in our sport can be added to the circulation list Total Madness What else can you call it? Gumboots flying in all directions, even backwards, hula hoops used as lethal weapons, shot puts pretending to be lawn bowls and a bunch of relatively lightly clad people standing around in nonstop rain. Officially it was the Family Fun relay to wind up the year at Surrey park but it was actually more a case of insanity in the name of sport. For the record, winners were decided, although sometimes luck had a bigger influence than skill. The Tudor family team (Lilian, James, Norman) won the shot put bowl (getting shot closest to a mark by rolling it) although Debbie Telfer had the best of the day with a mere 14cm (however the rest of her team let her down a bit). The standing long jump was taken out by the Taberner-Baker team (Andrew, Patrick, Tim) with Todd Swanson having the best individual jump, although again, he was let down by his team members. Best gumboot throwing team was Hollie, Emma and Lorne behind Lorne s impressive 19.99m throw. The team also garnered the best laughs thanks to Hollie managing to direct her gumboot backwards twice! The relay, well the results say the Chin-knee-toe-make a bow-watch it go is a coaching cue for throws but Taberner-Baker team won but there was doesn t appear to apply to gumboot throws however Lorne had the considerable skulduggery from all teams best throw of the day including using the hula hoop batons as impediments to the opposition When it was all added up top team was Sam and Jackson Stewart and Shaun Wood, second was the Taberner- Baker combo, third Hollie, Emma, Lorne and fourth, the Tudors. There was also some normal athletics among the abnormalities of the day, with the 2000m battle between Liam Cullen and French visitor Maxence Bruyas and Tim Baker s m the highlights. In the 5 lap 2000m, Liam took off at the gun and opened up a big lead but was run down on the line by Max s flying finish 5:58.01 to 5: Results (Regular Events) 100m 1 (men) (No wind readings) Sam Stewart YM Inv

3 Jordan Second in John Walker Mile The prestigious Sir John Walker Mile capped off a very busy two weeks in the North Island for Jordan Rackham. The Inver argill 18 year old started it with the NZSS 1500m win, followed it up with a tough fought second (by.02 ) over 800m at the North Island championships in Palmerston North the following weekend and last weekend lined up against almost all of the best under 20 middle distance runners in the country over four laps at Auckland. Jordan receving his medal from Sir John Walker. Tannock Blair centre Thenius Peters third Windy conditions made the race a tactical one with no one willing to force the pace from the front and at the bell Jordan was one of the leaders of a tightly packed bunch with Tannock Blair of Canterbury sitting right behind. But at 300m to go it was down to two Jordan and Tannock with the Canterbury athlete s sprint taking him to the win, to 4:19:54. These were the two fastest U20 miles run this year. In the athletics New Zealand round up Sir John Walker was reproted as saying he was impressed with the standard of the race. It was a very competitive field in trying conditions and it was a good race. The whole of athletics is looking good at the moment right across the board, he said. Jack Welsh St Pauls Athlete of the Year The club s prizegiving recognised members for a variety of achievements and accomlishments, with Jack taking the WDF King trophy for best performance and best athlete. Jack medalled twice at the N. Z Champs last March then showed there was plenty more to come witha series of Southland records in his throws events.
