1 ICSCC Memo #9, November 2007 The Official Publication of the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs In This Issue: Race Results Races #11 & #12 and IRDC Enduro Final Championship Points ICSCC Awards Banquet 2nd Notice Our 2007 race season is officially complete, and the final points have now been tabulated and posted on the ICSCC website. The annual Fall Executive, Contest Board, and ROD meetings are coming up November 10 th at the Sea-Tac Marriott in Seattle. The meetings begin at 9:00 am (ROD at 10:00 am), and anyone is welcome to attend. Through the Years, our 50 th Anniversary Banquet, will be held the evening of November 10 th. You are all invited to come share in the laughs, tears, mishaps, and many friendships of the last 51 years of ICSCC racing. Festivities will begin at 5:00 pm. This year, just like last, seventy-four drivers will be receiving championship trophies. The accomplishments and contributions of all our drivers, workers and officials will be celebrated during the evening. Please make sure to send in your reservation form as soon as possible. (Look in this Memo for details.) As I have begun to reflect back on this season, I feel good about where we are as an organization. In many ways, 2007 was a successful year. Although entry fees increased significantly (to keep up with increasing track rental charges), gas prices were high, the season was unusually wet, and car attrition was higher than normal, we managed to produce a good race schedule and race entries were higher than expected. I thought I would share some preliminary data (comparing 2007 with 2006) with you in this issue # Of Licensed Drivers Number of Races Total Entries # Entries per Race Drivers Attending All Races 7 3 Non-ICSCC Entries Non-ICSCC per Race President s Message 1. Licenses issued remained virtually the same, increasing by 1% in The total entry count was significantly higher than last year, and there was one less race on our schedule. 3. The average number of entries per race also improved, which can only help the clubs putting on those races. 4. More drivers attended all the races this year, and while I have not had a chance to tally everything yet, a quick look at the final points data shows there were quite a few more who attended 10 or 11 races. 5. We are continuing to attract drivers from other sanctioning bodies to our events (11.5% this year). This number should continue to grow. 6. No numbers yet, but verbal reports from clubs indicate that Driver Training events were very successful. Most clubs had to turn away potential students. Our Novice program remains strong and in 2007 we continued to see large Novice CW grids. This information suggests that what we are doing is still working. Through the continued dedication of people who care, and always being open to improvements, we can remain a strong and viable racing organization for another 50 years. See you at the banquet. 10 Steward s Soapbox Wow! What a Year! Well, here we are at the end of our racing season, and I am pleased that so many of you drivers have put safety first as your priority. We have preached, all season long, for drivers to be safe, avoid crash damage, and make it to the last race of the season. The majority of you have been believers and we hope to honor you at this year s ICSCC Awards Banquet. If you strayed from this year s goal of spending your racing budget on speed parts not crash damage, the good news is that we all get a fresh start with the beginning of the 2008 Conference Racing season. As you know, Pastor Hal is more than qualified and eager to provide you with a safe, fair, and pleasant racing experience. Get ready. It will be here before you know it! My last duty, as this year s Steward, is to present the prestigious 2007 ICSCC Driver of the Year Award. The winner of this award is selected by your Competition Committee, which consists of: Paul Whitworth, Al Carton, Scott Adare, Michael Conatore, Al Ores, Jack DeChristopher, Karen Stimson, Manfred Duske, Jess Heitman, George Burgesser, and Hal Hilton. I thank each of them for their help and dedication this season. I am proud to say that each one of these committee members were present at our election meeting which was held at the last race of the season, at Pacific Raceways. Some of these folks drove a good distance just to cast their vote, and it is understandable when you see the quality of the drivers that were nominated. The nominees are: (in alphabetical order) Gary Bockman, Jon Bonaforte, Jeff Clark, Cheryl Gilbert, Chris Heinrich, Ken Hill, Rick Payne. Considering their driving abilities, sportsmanship, and contributions to Conference Racing, each of these nominees could very easily be worthy of having his or her name displayed on The Randall Cup. Until now the winner s name has been safeguarded in a hermetically sealed envelope, and locked in a safety deposit box at a Swiss bank. And, the winner is Oh! 12 Orange-Aid Fresh squeezed by the ICSCC License Director Checking My Mirrors What a year! The NCW group had 216 race starts and the NOW group 22. There were several returning or out-of-area senior drivers who took advantage of the Observer program to join or re-join ICSCC after spending Saturday with the Novice groups. In all (according to my records) we had 50 drivers attain Area status, 15 attain Senior status, and 8 Seniors go through observation. It is also worth noting that several of the new drivers showed up with previously mothballed race cars, which shows that the sport is growing and ICSCC has a venue that draws cars out of dusty garages. Popular novice cars are Pro7, CR, SM, various Hondas, and Pro3, all of which represent some of the more affordable race options and offer great learning platforms. The Novice program is also proving popular for drivers who want to race with SOVREN. The ICSCC program provides closely competitive racing experience that doesn t endanger the priceless vintage cars in SOVREN. Between races at the SOVREN Fall Finale, I spoke with Robert Slusher, who drove that beautiful red Corvair this year. Robert said he enjoyed the Novice program, but prefers the space and driving style in SOVREN. It is important to note that Group 2 (1,4,5) can seem brutal to someone driving a vintage car. I want to thank the drivers and officials who helped me grow into the job this year. The safety workers were my eyes and ears on the track, and due to their sage input we educated and protected many drivers. Yes, there were some wrecks; they are an unfortunate risk in our sport. But not only did the safety workers respond professionally, they also provided valuable input for the analysis and subsequent education of the driver(s) involved.
