The last two championship events were well attended and mostly uneventful. The everpopular Doernbecher Dash brought out large numbers of drivers who bolted in their extra seats and gave lunchtime rides to family members, friends, and other spectators. Cascade s Doernbecher coordinator, Margie Swanson, said twenty-five Doernbecher children and their families came to the track this year to enjoy the Kids Karavan rides, a pinewood derby competition, a catered lunch, and other activities. This day provides the Doernbecher families a small, and much needed, reprieve from the daily routine of medical treatments, and they always leave with big smiles. Going into the season finale at Pacific Raceways, several championships were still on the line. At day s end the victors emerged, good sportsmanship prevailed, and the first losers were already scheming for next year. Do you know who came out on top? Make sure to congratulate all the winners! The 8 Hours of the Cascades was our last event. The October 20 th Enduro ran under bright, sunny skies and a temperature of 71 degrees. How often does that happen in October? For all you endurance enthusiasts, it looks like you can expect two Enduros next year, but because PIR is scheduled to close for repaving in September, CSCC and IRDC will be swapping dates. The annual Fall, Contest Board, and ROD meetings are scheduled for November 11. The meetings begin at 9:00 am (ROD at 10:00 am). Feel free to drop in for a portion of the day, or stay all day and see firsthand how ICSCC business is conducted. Finally, it s time to celebrate 50 years of ICSCC racing! What an incredible achievement! This year, we ll be Puttin on the Ritz at the Sea-Tac Marriott on November 11 th. Festivities start at 5:00 pm. Come enjoy an evening among friends as we recognize our drivers, workers, and officials for their accomplishments in Seventy-four drivers have qualified for championship trophies this year and I know there will be some nice surprises as we celebrate many others for their contributions to Conference. 12 Steward s Soapbox First of all, I won t give you a year-end, blow-by-blow account of all the action in our 2006 season. There was lots of it, but by now it s all pretty much a blur for most of us. Instead, let s talk about what we tried to do this year, and what we ll strive for in all our races to come. Let s use the K.I.S.S. Principle. I think we ve all probably heard of the K.I.S.S. Principle. Do you know who came up with it? There are several theories about where it really began, but I think whoever started it was really smart. Cut to the chase. Get to the point. Eliminate the extra stuff. Keep It Simple, Stupid. I like it. So I ll restate some of our accomplishments and goals using K.I.S.S.. Drivers: - Stay on the track. - Don t hit anyone. - Leave room for your fellow racers to also stay on the track. - Don t pass during yellow or black flags. - Slow down for emergency workers. Those are just Five Things. If you feel so inclined, you could add go fast and try to win to the list and you still only have to remember seven things. But since go fast and try to win are pretty much Pavlovian responses to buckling the safety belts and starting the car for most drivers, we re pretty much back to the Five Things. The Five Things are the ways to be safe, have fun, win races and save your racing budget. Here s a thought: Put the Five Things in your memory and on your trailer door, so you re always aware that having fun is what drew us all to Conference racing in the first place, and that if we always do the Five Things, we can have fun at the races for years to come. Ron Muro will be your Steward next year. Please welcome him and give him your best efforts. Ron has the energy, enthusiasm, creative ideas and capability to help everyone make their best even better and to help all you drivers remember the Five Things. Personal, Sappy Stuff: It has truly been my pleasure and privilege to be your race steward for Everyone said that if I took the job as steward, I would learn a lot and meet a host of really great people. And that s exactly what happened. Those of you who have been to a few Conference banquets have heard previous stewards say pretty much the same thing. And the reason they always do, is because the friendship, sportsmanship, camaraderie and personal fulfillment the stewards experience during the racing season, stay with us for a lifetime. Thank you everyone, for being just who you are racers and volunteers and volunteers and racers. Many of us are both. And without all of us, none of us could be as successful as we are. So, whether you were able to participate a little or a lot, were a volunteer or a racer, I want to thank each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication.
