WRIGHT WRITES 3 by Mike Wright Rev Record Editor Finally the race season is well underway. As I write this we ve got two Solo events under our belts and three RallyCross events in the history books. All these successful events mean money for the club, which is good. Profitable events are what enable us to do things like purchase timing equipment and software, replacement cones, insurance for our trailer contents, maybe even a new trailer, and most importantly, to provide startup money to put on the WOR Games in October. Speaking of WOR Games, Starla McCauley is asking for help to plan the event and to take over for next year. She has been doing a great job on this very important event for several years now, but would like to pass the torch to some ambitious race enthusiast with some organizing skills. Please don t be shy. Starla was a great mentor for Joy and me when we took over the Rev Record, and I m sure she will be just as good at teaching the next WOR Games Chairman. Also on the money front, your club needs you! Starla has found a great opportunity for our club to get in on some racing action at Mid-Ohio Raceway, while also making some money for the club. It involves working part-time for the Mid-Ohio folks during their Pro Events. I ve heard that the club needs to supply 15 to 20 people for these events, where we will work part of a day, and then spend the rest of the time watching the racing. There are seven race events and we ll need people at all of them. General Admission tickets to these Pro Events are in the $15-20 range, per day, and camping passes go for another $30-50, and of course on-track food is not cheap. If you come out to work, all those passes are free and I think you get fed. Such a deal! Once again, don t be shy; it promises to be a great time. Pam Poppe is talking about setting up a WOR tent-city in the worker s campground. Even more fun! When Joy visited the Dayton post office on April 30th to mail out the May issue of the Rev Record, she talked to someone new and was informed that we had the wrong postage label for the type of mailings we are purchasing. It s funny how the previous mailings all went out with the exact same postage label, yet no one at the post office caught the mistake. Joy had to hand-stamp all 232 issues of last month s Rev before the post office would accept them. The upside is that now we ve got the correct label, and that may mean getting the Rev in a more timely manner. This issue you re holding is also the first issue we ve produced using Windows XP. Up to now we ve been using Windows 98, but reliability problems forced me to upgrade Joy s computer. Finally, check out the event pictures on our new Smug Mug Website, worscca.smugmug.com. I ve posted two Solo events and one RallyCross event, and I even put up some pictures of me in my Talon at the last PDX. I wish I had more PDX pictures to post. Heck, I wish I had more of every event. I ve been getting some help from Mike Edgerton, Gordon Maciulewicz and RallyCrosser Tim Spellman promised to send me some Rally photos. The more the merrier. Any photos you would like to offer for posting on the Smug Mug site, please to me at msw151@yahoo.com, or if you ve got a bunch, burn me a CD like Tim did. I ll even reimburse you for the cost of the CD! See you at the next race. Rental Altima Rocks! (photo courtesy of Elliot Sherwood)

4 EXECUTIVE ORDERS by Steve Demeter WOR Regional Executive Out of the Horse s... Wow, the year is almost half over. Great things are happening. Two successful Solo events at a brand new site. The Adesa site is great. The website is just about self sustaining with the advertising that Christian has gotten on it. Two RallyCrosses in and a third this weekend, with great weather predicted. And we now have a club car as well, thanks to Jim Hardesty. The WOR Games and PDX are well along in planning (despite not having our own TT chief instructor as chief instructor... just could not resist that Starla and Dave.) We have an opportunity to work all the pro races at Mid-Ohio, enjoy the races and put money in the club s treasury thanks to Starla and her uncanny ability to talk the ears off a fireplug. I would not like to be on the opposite side of a negotiation with her. She would end up owning everything that I call mine. Had a fun scavenger hunt at the last meeting. Dave Howard has plans for recognizing road racers who excel. Mike Edgerton gets more press for us than I ever got in three years in the publicity spot. Oh and last but not by a long shot least, the Rev gets better with every issue. None of this would be possible without me in charge. LOL... Actually, it is because our membership elected good people to the board and I was lucky enough to talk more good people into the appointed jobs.makes me look good, but it is due to everyone s hard work and dedication. Good show everyone. No Assistant RE Report submitted this month. 6 6 CHAIR CHAT RallyCross Report by Dave Rudy Rally Chair The April event came and went! Well, actually it went pretty well. There were 21 competitors and a good mix of AWD and two wheel drive cars. The course was one of the quickest and busiest that we have had in a long time with very little time not turning and cutting back. There was some course degradation in places that we have not had that before, but we changed the course and continued. There were competitors from Purdue and Detroit in addition to a lot of regulars. Mike Wright and I rented the Altima from Jim Hardesty and faired reasonably well finishing in 4th and 5th (out of five cars!) in M2. The start time of the event was moved to 1:00 p.m. to allow the course to dry a little before we started and was well received by everyone. So for the remainder of the 2007 events the start time is being revised to First Car Off at 12:00 noon. Amanda is still going to be making lunch for everyone but we will have lunch done before the first car is off. This also gives us the opportunity to run through the afternoon without the long lunch break. Next event will be on May 12 (before the newsletter is mailed), with PE 4 being on June 9 at Smoke and Mirrors Raceway near West Alexandria, Ohio. See everyone in the summer. photos from top: Dave Rudy coaching your Editor on RallyCross technique (photo courtesy of Elliot Sherwood). Dan Coughnour squeaked out a 0.1 point lead to win PE2. 7 7 Solo Report by Christian Moist Solo Chair There is great news here in the WOR Solo department. At the time of this writing, we have had two very successful solo events at Adesa Cin/Day! Our first points event, held on April 22nd, went off without a hitch on the new lot. Over 60 racers attended and navigated through the 40+ second course. The event started on time and finished early, allowing five runs and fun runs at the end of the day. Several battles took place throughout the day in various classes. One of the closer battles came from B Stock with Ed Lowery edging out Dennis Cox by just over a tenth of a second! Frank Levinson surprised the other D Stock contenders in his Dodge Neon by taking the win by over three tenths of a second. Other close battles included Jimmy Chiong and Luis Mangaser in STU, Tom Thieman and Jack Strahm in SM2 and Scott Giles and Renee Hines in their STS2 prepped CRX. Jack Burns took top PAX time in his H Stock Mazda 3. The second points event, held on May 6th, didn t disappoint either. Fifty racers attended and all received seven runs! Again, the event started on time and despite windy conditions, ran very smoothly. Fun runs were held at the end of the day for those who wanted some extra track time for a dollar a run. ASP driver Gregory Lloyd took top raw time for the day, with another impressive performance by Frank Levinson, who took the top PAX time. The 2007 WOR Regional Solo Series continues on to the Nutter Center, Lot 8 on the 17th of June. We look forward to seeing everyone there in what is sure to be another successful event. photos from top: Greg Lloyd set FTD in his ASP Corvette (photo courtesy of Gordon Maciulewicz). The Adesa troops got their Sentra to lift its hind leg Vette of Dennis Cox still gets the job done. Doug Roberts has fun in his tiny Fiat 850. On the Grid by Dave Howard Road Race Chair Well we have finally started the race season, so lets all get out there both racers and workers and participate. Something new for the racers we will be starting are Top driver awards this year for both Regional and National drivers. To be eligible you must participate in at least 4 races. At least 2 races must be within the Great Lakes Division and regional drivers must also participate in WOR Games. Points will be awarded for overall finish within the group and overall finish within your class. All drivers that belong to the region are eligible but it is the driver s responsibility to turn in to me a copy of the final race results for consideration for the awards. Trophies will be awarded for the top 3 finishers in both National and Regional race participants. Anyone who attends a race please let me know how you did so that we can recognize you at the meetings. Also don t forget that workers are needed for all upcoming Pro Events at Mid-Ohio and for any of the SCCA events. See the schedule in the Rev for details. As always play safe and I will see you at the track.

8 WOR GAMES and MORE by Starla McCauley WOR Games Chair WOR Games and the PDX are off and running. At the last meeting we decided on a theme, entry, and changes to be made in the supps. We also had some fun, but don t let anyone know. Seriously the WOR Games / PDX meeting is the fourth Tuesday of each month at Donatos in Centerville off 725 behind the Paragon Restaurant at 7 pm. There are still a lot of things to be done so come on out and join us at the next meeting. If there is something that you would like to do or just an idea to improve, please call or me (we need all the help that is offered). Also, I once again remind you that this will be my last year as WOR Games Race Chair, so if anyone is interested for next year please call me. Hope to see all of you there! 9 HOT OFF THE PRESSES 9 TOPEKA, Kan. (May 10, 2007) - Sports Car Club of America, Inc. (SCCA) announced today a partnership with Dragon Publishing to distribute its comprehensive guide to motorsports participation, Go Ahead - Take the Wheel. The special SCCA Edition of the book provides step-by-step instruction for racing enthusiasts with aspirations of racing in their own racecar. I grew up watching races and always dreamed that one day it would be me out on the track, Dave Gran, author of Go Ahead - Take the Wheel said. Unfortunately, when I first attempted to get into the sport, I listened to the wrong people and thought that racing is only a sport for the rich. Of course now I know better. When I was getting into racing, I faced several hurdles and all too many times did things the hard way. I later realized that I was not alone and many others face the same obstacles, or even worse, choose to never pursue racing as a hobby. This inspired me to write a book that clearly shows how anyone can become involved in motorsports and how to overcome the most common road blocks. Trust me, if I can do it, so can you! Gran s book guides readers through various forms of racing starting with Solo events held on large open paved lots, Performance Driving Experience events (PDX) held on permanent road course race tracks, and competitive wheel-to-wheel Club Racing with a racecar. Go Ahead - Take the Wheel also describes what the prospective racer can expect when entering the world of SCCA Club Racing, steps on building or purchasing a racecar, safety considerations, detailed costs for budgets ranging from economy to extravagant and much more. My goal with this book is to prove that racing is possible and affordable for the average person, said Gran. Most people would be surprised at just how attainable it really is to begin racing. Life is too short not to pursue our dreams. Our average club racer is a regular person with a nine to five job and a really, really fun hobby, SCCA President & CEO Jim Julow said. Becoming involved in racing can sometimes seem intimidating, but it doesn t need to be. Go Ahead - Take the Wheel provides clear and easy-to-follow instructions on becoming actively involved in motorsports with the SCCA. SCCA has scheduled the release of Go Ahead - Take the Wheel for early June Orders are being accepted now on the SCCA merchandise web site ( or by calling for $16.95, plus shipping and handling.

10 MY FIRST RALLYCROSS by Mike Wright Itinerant WOR Editor Once again I have experienced another first through this great club. This time it was RallyCross. Normally I would have to just watch one of these events because I don t have any suitable vehicle to race with, but because of Jim Hardesty s Rental RallyCross Altima I decided to take the plunge into something different. The weather leading up to the event was very wet, and there were some thoughts of calling off the event. I would like to make a plug here for the Forums that WOR s webmaster Christian Moist recently created. If you are concerned about the weather leading up to a WOR event, check what s happening on the WOR Forums. For the RallyCross, Chairman Dave Rudy was constantly updating us with his thoughts on how the weather would affect the event. Dave eventually made a great decision to push back the event start time by one hour to give the track a little more time to dry out. The weather that day was sunny and beautiful, the track was muddy to begin with, but by the last runs of the day the track had dried enough that dust was getting everywhere. So I got to have fun in both the mud and the dirt. I want to say a few words about the different feel of the Rally crowd. Up to now I ve only been to the Solo events. The Solo crowd has a different feel from the Rally crowd. Where the Solo crowd is very big, very focused on their cars and getting the maximum runs in, the Rally folks are a smaller and more laid

11 back group. Setting up for the two events is also different. Where the Solo event is laid out the day before (with very few volunteers to lend a hand), the Rally was set up on the fly with Dave Rudy providing limited guidance and the usual Rally troops all lending a hand. Where the feel of a Solo event is like one of customers paying WOR for a service, then leaving, the feel of a Rally event is more like a social gathering with everyone pitching in to help. The Rally folks also seems to come from farther away, as Dave told me we had entrants from as far away as Purdue University, Toledo, Kentucky and Cleveland. Not a bad turnout for this little track carved out of the West Alexandria farm fields. The driving was lots of fun, especially since it wasn t my own car. The Altima was reliable through the day, starting easily and idling quietly between runs. Anyone who is contemplating RallyCross should run one event in Jim s Altima, just to get a feel for what it s about and what the car goes through. The only drawbacks to the Altima are the automatic tranny, and the front wheel drive. However, those two minuses did not stop Dave Rudy from getting the rear end to swing out on him a couple of times. There was not a lot of diversity in the race cars. Seems like it was the Subaru crowd, and everyone else. You can see pictures of the cars on WOR s picture website at worscca.smugmug.com. Last but definitely not least I cannot say enough nice things about the owners of the Smoke and Mirrors Raceway, Allen and Amanda Dwire. They have done a beautiful job creating a picturesque park-like setting for the race track. Allen has cleared a lot of brush and trees out to make a nice picnic area and has constructed an outhouse that is set back in the treeline and is actually a very nice looking structure; almost a work of art. Amanda, bless her heart, sets up a very nice self-serve, contributions-funded refreshments stand with fruits, snacks and drinks, and I hear that the generous RallyCrossers always cover her expenses quite nicely. I ve heard Dave Rudy say that future events will all be starting one hour later, and will feature Amanda providing lunch prior to the events (for donations, of course.) I don t know how she does it, but that is very generous and most appreciated. (photos courtesy of Elliot Sherwood) The view of Allen and Amanda Dwire s Smoke and Mirrors RallyCross Park taken from the picturesque outhouse.

12 SPRING SPRINTS AT ORP by John Pfetzing RIT (Reporter in Training) There were 65 entries, which means that there was no profit on this event. The PDX was cancelled due to not enough cars. WOR members and former members who worked the race at ORP are: Mike Sonderman in his first time as chief of Start, Debby Rudy who also worked start, and John Pfetzing who as a SIT (Starter in Training) worked corners on Saturday and Start on Sunday. Mike and Debby beat on, stepped on, and worked without mercy on JD Pfetzing holds off David Schacht in Saturday s group four race at ORP. John trying to make him into a photo courtesy of John Wilmoth at jwwphotos.com starter. It must be noted that an SIT is the lowest form of life at an event. In actuality the three seemed to have a good time working together. Also Ed Hill working grid and pits, Barry McDonald at corner, Doug Mildon as steward, Steve Harris was chief steward, Denny Powell worked Tech, and Bob Jennings who crewed for HIPPI Racing. This was a goodly number of workers from this region and WOR should be proud. Racers from Dayton included Rex Gunning who DNF ed on Saturday and took first on Sunday, Shawn Hobbs who finished first on Saturday and first on Sunday and won the Hard Charger Award on Saturday, Jason Albright who DNF ed on Saturday and took first on Sunday, Fred Albright with a DNS on Saturday and fourth on Sunday, and JD Pfetzing who placed first on Saturday and second on Sunday and won the Hard Charger Award on Saturday. During qualifying on Saturday Dr. John (i.e. John Pfetzing - we ve got to keep the father and son apart) was working turn 15 and was watching Rex Gunning doing a great job on that corner but on the last lap he heard a large lockup of tires and then a bang. Rex had gone into the tire barrier. The car hit and the engine screamed for what seemed like an eternity before Rex finally shut it off. Apparently the throttle cable stuck open thus causing Rex to crash and forcing him to manually shut off the engine. To say the least Rex was down as he had meticulously worked on the car over the winter and had it in perfect shape. The comer workers observed a lot of right front damage and oil under the car which obviously made them wonder if the engine went bang. Fortunately it didn t and Rex was able to start the race Saturday afternoon but he only made about 5 laps but it is unknown why he came in. On Sunday the car ran good and he finished first. In race group four it came down to a contest between two SRF s. These two left the rest of the field behind. In actuality it was like in Formula One where qualifying was the most important thing. Whoever got the pole would win the race barring any mistakes by the leader and that is just what happened. On Saturday JD Pfetzing, the son, got the pole and since he weighs somewhere around 350 pounds led the field to a fast start trying to negate the weight disadvantage. It worked as he was in turn 1 first and went on to win the race with David Schacht right behind him the entire time. On Sunday David got the pole by three-thousandths of a second. He, as the pole sitter, and a lightweight guy, led the field down for a very sloooow start and it worked as JD s 350 pound anchor held him back. Schacht led the entire time with JD finishing just behind him for second.

THE EDGERTON REPORT 13 by Mike Edgerton Chief Beverage Researcher Please be patient. I promised an article that would recommend a proper beverage to go with a particular make and model car... similar to the suggested pairings of wine/beer and food. A project like this takes a lot of research. The article will appear in a future issue of the Rev. In the meantime, I have a charity test-drive report. In 1982, Nancy Goodman Brinker started the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to honor a promise she made to her older sister, Susan Goodman Komen. Suzy was just 36 years old when she died of breast cancer. At that time, breast cancer was not discussed in public. Little was known about the disease. The Foundation has a mission to end breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. Today, the Foundation is one of the world s largest private funders of breast cancer research and community outreach programs. A major source of funds comes from the annual BMW Ultimate Drive. BMW of North America has a fleet of new BMWs that travel around to selected BMW dealers where locals are invited to take a test drive in a model of their choice. The cars are painted silver with a distinctive pink breast cancer awareness logo. BMW donates $1.00 to the Foundation for every mile driven. Thru 2006, BMW has given over $10 million to breast cancer research, treatment and awareness. I was fortunate enough to get to test drive a 2007 BMW 750i. What s not to like about this vehicle? It is extremely quiet, comfortable, fast, responsive and handles quite well for a relatively-big 4-door sedan. The 4.8- liter V-8 generates 360 hp and 360 ft. lbs. of torque and transmits it to the rear wheels with a 6-speed tranny. Expect 0-60 times in under six seconds, a top speed of 150 mph and fuel economy in the 17 to 25 mpg range. You can also expect to pay in the $76,500 range. I expect not to. My test drive was at Voss Village BMW. This was a fun experience for a good cause. There are a few things that need attention to make for a more beneficial event for all. If they would have checked the designated route the morning of the event, they would have discovered one road had maintained traffic while fresh black-top was being applied. Not a pretty sight on expensive, shiny, silver BMWs. I think they modified the route after the reported problem. Also, there were displays of Foundation literature and a table of Foundation paraphernalia but nobody in sight to promote the Foundation or hawk the products. Voss had a captive audience but failed to provide a sales pitch, literature or even a sales associate s business card. A touch of subtle marketing would have certainly been appropriate. Look for the BMW Ultimate Drive to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation around this time next year at a BMW dealer near you. Check it out at theultimatedrive.

ET CETERA Have you always wanted to try RallyCross but you don t want to get your own car dirty? Well here s your chance to see what all the fun is about. At this year s WOR RallyCross events a RallyCross rental car will be available. The rental car is a 93 Nissan Altima with an automatic transmission and snow tires. Last fall it got hit by a falling tree that put a dent in the roof and removed the back window. It sat outside with no window for several months slowly filling with water. Now the interior has been gutted, the gallons of water sucked out and it has some stylish cardboard and plastic covering the missing back window. In other words, it s the perfect RallyCross car. The car will run in it s own RC class with trophies awarded. The fee for the RallyCross rental car is $30 in addition to the event entry fee. For more information about the RallyCross rental car contact Jim Hardesty- jimhardesty@ameritech.net or The next WOR RallyCross is scheduled for Saturday, June 9th.
