3 J a n u a r y / F e b r u a r y C a l C l u b N e w s P a g e 3 Cal Club News Letters, SoPac News encourages s to the editor. To submit your to the editor send it to sopacnews@yahoo.com In Memory of Preston Lowell I regret to inform everyone that after a seven year battle with cancer, Lowell Preston peacefully passed away last Wednesday. He was a great racer and great human being. I will really miss his sense of humor and his kind nature; never saw him lose his temper or heard him speak ill of anyone. He had spent the last two years away from the track and was trying to gain strength to get back in the seat. Racing was his true passion and he was proud to be a part of Cal Club. God speed Lowell, it was a pleasure to have known you. Services will be held after the first of the year and I will post more information once I find out. Brendon Short Tom Eddleman s Last Lap Party I wanted to thank Cal Club for the lovely flowers and for everyone who came to the Last Lap Party, it was great fun and Dad would have loved hugging on the girls, thanks so much for making his racing years such a huge success; it was his passion. Petra Gilbert Marquis Sportsmanship Award Thank You I wanted to say thank you to who ever votes on the Sportsmanship award. This is really really appreciated. As I could not be there for the banquet, (again in France, and if I delayed the trip I would have missed Thanksgiving. oopps) I was very pleased that Mike picked up all the trophies working overtime and showing up in the magazine. I think he explained well that "it's about the club". I know many people think that sportsmanship among drivers is about leaving room on the track, not blocking, being gracious when finishing a close second etc. But I think at the club level it is mostly about participation. That begins with just getting your family out and involved, Like Mike! (and thanks for that help Ceci and Mark.) I have had my mother - in - law working timing and scoring also! Next, get your friends on the crew. Maybe the best that we do is ignore the other drivers! It s really a bigger deal to help your competitor s crew! Among the FF guys and FF2000 from time to time, we help (and get a lot of help) other guys with parts and advice and occasionally working on someone else's car. This is what is great, getting everyone on the track! It s 2011 and perhaps your new years resolutions have already been made, however, it s not too late to make another one, especially if it s a fun one and one you can easily keep. Cal Club is looking for people who would like to be involved with the Time Trial program. It's a lot of fun and participation can range from helping out at one single event (no experience necessary) all the way to managing the program, whatever level you would like. Currently, we are scheduled to run three Time Trial events, March 26-27, September 3-4, and October 1-2, all at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. To get involved please contact Roy Mallory at or at roy@apex-motorsports.com for more information. By the way, if you are more interested in going hill climbing, we can do that too! The Celebrity Car Race Fantasy Grid By Joel Jane A recent trip to see the Indy Cars at St. Petersburg reminded me of the many times I was fortunate enough to work corners at the Long Beach Grand Prix - from the first Formula 5000 race in 1975, through the wonderful F-1 years and the eventual switch to Champ Cars. It was always a great weekend, with varied support races - everything from serious bicycle races that gave us a flavor of the Tour de France, top-level motorcycle races, karts (where Scott Pruett came to be known), Trans-Am, etc. But a perennial favorite was, and continues to be, the Toyota Pro/Celebrity race, which pitted pro drivers against celebrities from various areas, with the prize money donated to charity. They were all placed in Toyotas - typically Celicas, with the driver names in large letters. After the usual practice and qualifying sessions, the Celebrities were gridded and the Pros held back 30 seconds for a split start. This usually allowed a lap or two before the real mayhem began. Can you imagine Parnelli Jones and Dan Gurney catching, oh say Nicollette Larson ( It s Gonna Take a Lotta Love ) in a hairpin turn? What she got was a lotta shove! (I m not sure they actually raced the same years, but you get the idea ) One year, the celebrities included popular songwriter Paul Williams, and his car carried number?. The explanation was that he was so short that he didn t deserve a whole number. Having made the mental connection, it was easy to remember who was in the? car. This got me to thinking that maybe there are other celebrities with a special correlation to a number that could be invited; this would make it easy to remember who was driving. In 1987, I printed my first bogus list of celebrities and even handed out some copies to other corner workers as a gag. The recent trip to St. Pete led me to dig up that old list and update it some. I decided not to include sports stars that normally wore numbers - such as the ball sports too much duplication. Car 12 could be Joe Namath, Bob Griese or Terry Bradshaw who s to know? Numbers associated with groups were also avoided - is Car 4 the Four Seasons, Four Tops, Fab Four or even the Fearsome Foursome of the LA Rams? I was after more esoteric numbers So here is the updated list, just for fun. Some of the entries are timeless, some contemporary and some, sadly, are no longer with us. But hey, it is a Fantasy Grid after all. Number Driver Hint/Reason 1.0+ Chuck Yeager Mach. Speed of sound breaking pilot. 007 Sean Connery/Roger Moore Bond. James Bond. 6 Tom Bodette Motel. 4 P a g e 4 C a l C l u b N e w s J a n u a r y / F e b r u a r y Porterfield Brake Pads National/Dbl. Regional FONTANA, Calif. (January 21-23, 2011) Cal Club kicked off 2011 at Autoclub Speedway with the Porterfield Brake Pads National/Double Regional that boasted a solid list of 202 entries. This race followed the SCCA Snowbird Nationals/Regionals opener last weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. Winter crossover between SCCA divisions is something Cal Club and the Arizona Region encourage each year. It happened this time on a limited scale and that helped beef up entries in several classes. Our out of division visitors clearly sought relief from the frigid temperatures that surround the southwest. "Escape to SoPac," they said! "Why not," is what we keep telling them. Let them get a few races in their log books before the snow melts. Several out of division drivers did make impressions throughout the Porterfield Brake Pads National/Double Regional 10 race group lineup. But one cast challengers were those six SRF guys from the Oregon Region who pumped up the spec sports racer car count to 22. That's one of the biggest SRF fields we've seen in many years. Defeating a Cal Club SRF driver at his home track is a tough task anyway you slice it. They gave it a solid effort to say the least and put in a good showing in the process. It's safe to assume some will be back at a later date for a rematch now that they know who's hot. Moving to the Tin Top contingent we see another good story of who's hot. The Boys are Back! That's correct, Spec Miata is back in force with the a level of competition we once enjoyed a few years back. This group vanished for two years but returned with open armed approval by everyone who ever liked seeing them compete at Cal Club events. Spectators took this group for granted years ago, all unaware it could end at a moments notice, like it did. But no more! Spec Miata is here to stay if today's Cal Club race fans and decision makers have anything to say about it. The National Spec Miata race was hands down one of the weekend's best showdowns. These guys brought their 'A' game and let it hang out as we expected they would. There was more passing in Spec Miata than any group. Flying off the banking in formation they wrestled for positions each lap, cleanly. Yeah, they were bump drafting but it was all good stuff! The new allowance for gentle bump drafting made their racing more exciting for them and spectators alike. Before this race weekend though, Spec Miata requested a specific SCCA Steward to monitor their events and that man is Bill Wells. Mr. Wells, now under verbal contract with Cal Club Spec Miata understands this fierce group and their expectations of consistent officiating throughout 2011 and beyond. As in the past, Wells was and still is dedicated to delivering consistent officiating for Spec Miata. However, he had his hands full this weekend keeping the competitive bunch in check and in his stable. Welcome back Spec Miata! On track action began early Friday morning with an open practice session. The official event began in the afternoon with one practice for all entrants. Saturday morning was dedicated to qualifying for all with the first Porterfield Brake Pads Regional underway after lunch. Sunday's schedule was crammed with racing, 10 in all and nothing else, with Group 1 National on deck at 8 a.m. The second Regional followed lunch and ran into the afternoon. Overall, the weather was great. Friday and Saturday were real nice but it was windy on Sunday. It blew all day, and hard at times launching canopies and anything else not tied down. It caught many by surprise. Lucky for some, Cal Club workers were seen running around early Sunday morning rescuing what canopies they could before mother nature claimed them for good. National Race Reports Group 1 - Spec Miata The first race of the day was going to be a Spec Miata barn burner. It was no surprise to see Sammy Valafar starting from the pole with fast time in qualifying. Valafar may have led the most laps in this race but there were plenty of lead challenges between the top five especially coming off turn 2 each lap. Valafar led the most laps with two drivers, Tyler Vance and Jeff Walker, each earning credit for officially leading one circuit. It was a NASCAR COT kind of race as the pack would come off turn 2 each lap scratching for positions and swapping spots to no end. In all, Valafar led 13 laps before he collected the win ahead of Walker in second and Vance in third. Tim Weaver finished fourth and Chuck Matthews rounded out the top five. Group 2 - FF, F500, SRF, FV FF - Ed Erlandson was fastest in Formula Ford qualifying but Bill Kephart stepped up to lead the first lap. Erlandson rebounded and collected the lead on the next circuit then led through lap 3. Kephart returned the favor and moved back to first and led for two more laps before Erlandson sealed the deal on lap 6 when he took the lead for the final time and held his advantage before claiming the win with a whopping 30 second advantage over Kephart in second. Ric Baribeault finished third ahead of Roger Kessinger in fourth. F500 - In F500 qualifying Mark Greenwald set fast time over rival Joe Rozelle, both San Francisco Region drivers. The two mixed it up for the lead several times but it was Greenwald who finalized the battle with the class win over Rozelle in second. SRF - 23 SRF entries lined up Saturday as favorites Mike Miserendino, TJ Acker and Bill Jucha topped the qualifying chart separated by just of a second. When the green flag flew Miserendino took command of the race pace. The field settled in and by lap 6 and it was Miserendino, Acker and Jucha. Acker was tucked under Miserendino s tail section looking content to follow the leader. And he did, lap after lap, cruising around in Miserendino s draft with Jucha in tow. Were they unable to pass or were they implementing strategy? We found out it was the later of the two as we came down to the last circuit of the race when Acker decided it was time to take one from the four time Runoffs champion. He made a last lap pass on Miserendino for the lead then sealed the deal at the checkered with a of a second advantage. Miserendino settled for second. In their draft at the line was Bill Jucha in third. The top three finished within 1.04 seconds. Paul Marino and Kyle Eggleton rounded out the top five. FV - Formula Vee is usually one of the best races here at Autoclub Speedway and this one was no disappointment. Mark Felsen of Denver, Colo., set fast time in qualifying on Saturday. At the start Felsen took charge of the race leading the first two laps until Alan Harrington of the Oregon Region passed to lead lap three. Then Ron Wake stepped up and scored the point on the fourth circuit and held the advantage for two laps. Felsen returned to Lee Alexander dominated all three wings & things races and set a new DSR track record on Saturday. Dennis Baer Photo the first position for one more lap before Wake sealed the deal on lap seven then led to the checkered where he nailed the Formula Vee National victory. Felsen finished second of a second off the winning pace. Cal Club veteran Charlie Turner was in striking distance for much of the race and put in a solid run towards the end to finish third, just of a second behind the top two. Mark Edwards finished fourth ahead of Roman Ruiz who rounded out the top five. Group 3 - T1, AS, T3, SSB, SSC, HP T1 - Chris Ronson was quickest in T1 qualifying on Saturday but not by much. When the green waved it was Oli Thordarson who jumped out front and led the first seven laps. On the eighth circuit Kyle Kelley worked his way up from his last place qualifying position to collect the lead. Kelley then led the last nine laps before he tallied the T1 win over Roy Benedetti in second. Thordarson finished third ahead of Robert Kahn and Ronson in fourth and fifth. AS - Chris Qualls was fast this weekend in his Ford Mustang but he had no class challengers. Instead he set out to beat everyone he could in his group. The only entries he couldn't tame were the T1 challengers who all finished in the top five. Next was Qualls who collected the A Sedan win and a solid sixth overall finish. T3 - Tom Wickersham and Michael Sullivan, both from up north, set the stage for a T3 battle. Wickersham set fast time in qualifying then led every lap before scoring the class win over rival Sullivan in second position. SSB/SSC - Richard Crites pushed his SSB Honda Civic to the limit this weekend as did Brian Husting in his SSC Chevy Cobalt. The two diced hard, yet in separate classes, but seemed to be evenly matched. They took turns leading each other but when the checkered flew Crites was in front of Husting at the finish. At the checkered each driver earned their class win. HP - An incredible line up of four H Production entries set the stage for a showdown with Gary Wittman on top of the qualifying chart with a giant 5.7 second advantage over Cory Markos, Craig Bryant and Leroy Shaver. When the green flag waved it was Markos who took command leading lap 1. Wittman bounced back and led lap 2 but dropped out the following circuit. Craig Bryant moved into the lead on lap 3 trailed by Leroy Shaver. Markos dropped out on lap nine leaving Bryant and Shaver to battle to the finish. At the flag it was Bryant taking the win ahead of Shaver in second. Markos was credited with third and Wittman posted a DNF. Group 4 - GT1, GT3, EP, STU, GTL, FP GT1 - Michael Lewis dominated GT1 before he collected the win defeating Andy Porterfield in second and Kyle Kelley in third. GT3 - The next battle was between Mike Hendersen, Wolfgang Maike and Dennis Marshall in GT3. Henderson was victorious after leading every lap. Maike finished second and Marshall was out after three laps with a DNF. EP - Gary Gist dominated E Production after setting fast time in qualifying then led every lap before collecting the class win ahead of Roger Karlson in second and Jim Malone in third. STU - Mark Hoover set all the marks in STU. He clicked off fast time in qualifying then led every lap before he secured the victory over Spec Miata standouts Sammy Valafar in second and Rob Burgoon in third. GTL - Bill Gilcrease and John Bower set the stage for a GTL battle that never materialized. Gilcrease was out by lap 7 with a DNF and Bower only finished half the laps but credited with the win. FP - Sean Powers was the only F Production entrant and suffered bad luck when he dropped out after seven laps with a DNF. Group 5 - DSR, FA, FB, CSR, FM, S2000, FE DSR - Lee Alexander set the overall pace and led every lap before he clinched the DSR win. Henry Botkin finished in second some 17.3 seconds off the winning pace. Completing the DSR finishing order was Robert Kazen who secured third at the checkered. FA - Jim Mashburn had the Formula Atlantic field covered and led every lap before scoring the class win ahead of Vito Racano in second and Chris Emanuel in third. Renny Damon and Dennis Goughary rounded out the top five. FB - Gary Hickman was the only entry in FB as he put in a solid run to collect the class win and a seventh overall finish. CSR - Steve Nicklin was fastest in CSR qualifying and set the early race pace

5 J a n u a r y / F e b r u a r y once the green flag waved. He led the first 14 laps as Ron Fletcher worked his way up to position to make a run for the win. With just three laps to go Fletcher moved to the lead and controlled the pace for the final two circuits before collecting the victory ahead of Nicklin in second. Joseph Schifini finished third and Don Simons started strong but was out after one lap. green. Brad Drew and Dutch Schultz battled for second through lap 10. On the 11th circuit Schultz moved to the lead. The next lap Brown returned to the point position and continued to set the pace with Schultz and Drew in tow. On the last lap Drew charged to the lead then collected the class win with a slim 1.7 advantage over Brown in second. Schultz finished third ahead of Ed Lever in fourth. Brinkop finished third some 16 second back from the winner. T3 - Tom Wickersham of San Ramon, Calif., and Michael Sullivan of Oakland, Calif. both showed up at Autoclub Speedway for the National T3 trophy. On Sunday, Wickersham collected his third win of the weekend easily defeating Sullivan who finished in second spot, respectively. ITA - It was no surprise to see Naji Dahi back in force as he clearly plans to defend his 2010 ITA crown over Eric Richter and Preston Lerner on this day. Dahi set fast time in qualifying then set out and led all laps defeating Richter and Lerner who finished in second and third. Dahi was the only ITA car Sunday afternoon so he simply cruised around Autoclub Speedway with no pressure and tallied yet another class victory. Group 7 - GT1, SP, ITE, GTL, STU, EP GT1 - Michael Lewis set the mark in qualifying again then took command of the race from the start through lap seven when he pulled off to collect the data he needed for tomorrow's National. Andy Porterfield moved to the point and led the final 10 laps before the tallied the overall and GT1 win. SP - Four entries set the stage in Saturday's Super Production qualifying with Richard Wall setting fast time. Wall took command of the race pace from the green ahead of George Captanis, Robert Kelley and Ron Bailey. Kelley worked his way from the back of the field due to no qualifying time and made a successful bid for the lead on lap seven. Once out front Kelley extended his lead over Wall. The foursome raced to the checkered where Kelley secured the win ahead of Wall in second and Captanis in third. Bailey finished fourth. Kelley continued his force by again dominating S Production on Sunday with another win. Wall finished second ahead of Bailey in third and Captanis in fourth. ITE - After completing a recent Cal Club Super School, Robert Green made his racing debut in his imported 2007 Noble M400. As the starter waved the green flag Green darted into the lead and set the pace ahead of Chet Fortney and Paul Gassen. Fortney applied pressure to Green from the start but Green was strong enough to lead every lap before he collected the win with a 5.7 second advantage over Fortney in second. Gassen was down a couple of laps but still finished third. Green returned to victory lane on Sunday after leading every lap unchallenged. Fortney tallied a second place finish with Gassen rounding out third. GTL - John Bower always hangs it out in his Nissan Sentra even as the lone GT- Lite entry on this Saturday. Today he started eighth overall but slid to 10th on lap one then improved to a solid seventh by the time he collected his class win 15 laps later. Bower returned Sunday afternoon to collect an easy win unchallenged after completed just 10 laps due to issues out of his control. In preperation for the National, Roy Benedetti collected the T1 Regional win on Saturday. In Sunday s National he finished second behind Kyle Kelley. Dennis Baer Photo Lucien Le Blanc (#1) leads Eric Boghossian in FST. Each driver collected a Regional win this weekend. Dennis Baer Photo three STU entries during qualifying then darted into the lead when the green flag waved ahead of Tim Booney and Michael Niemann. On lap five problems set in for Hoover as he fell off the pace. Booney and Niemann raced by for the top two positions. Booney clicked off laps and extended his advantage over Niemann then tallied the class win with a giant 18 second advantage over second place finisher, Niemann. Niemann was the lone STU entry Sunday afternoon as he raced to the checkered and collecting the class win and finished sixth overall. EP - Gary Gist was the only entry in E Production for Saturday s Regional. He pulled off course on lap five in preparation for tomorrow's National. Group 8 - FF, F500, SRF FF - Ed Erlandson was fastest in Saturday's qualifying session by a long shot with a 5.8 second advantage over Ric Baribeault of El Paso, Texas, and Roger Kessinger. Erlandson led up to the point of an incident late in the race that brought out a full course caution. Speedway fire crews were alerted then responded to an unidentified burning open wheel car that was later seen on the hook burnt to a crisp. While still under caution, time ran out when officials called it a race with Erlandson in first ahead of Baribeault in second and Kessinger in third. A post race ruling by Steward's penalized Baribeault three positions moving Kessinger to second and Will Gallaher of Santa Rosa, Calif., to third. Baribeault now completed the Formula Ford finishing order in fourth spot. Erlandson topped off his weekend with his third win on Sunday after leading every lap and defeating Baribeault and Kessinger by large margins. one of only three cars on the lead lap. SRF - A strong showing from the Spec Racer Ford group, beefed up with six Oregon Region challengers, made this one of the best events of the day. Steve Fogg of Portland, Ore., surprised Cal Club regulars with qualifying fastest. The quickest Cal Club driver was TJ Acker who qualified fourth. When the green flag waved Aaron Stein pulled off the impossible when he went from 10th to the lead from the green flag. He was later penalized for jumping the start, unintentionally. Meanwhile, TJ Acker and Mike Miserendino moved by Stein on lap three for the top two positions as the Oregon gang shuffled for positions. Two laps later Mike Miserendino dropped out as Fogg was now on the move to the front showing up Cal Club's best. On lap six Fogg moved to first and was positioned to collect the win. However, Acker thought differently as he reclaimed the lead on lap 9. With just a few laps to go the action was heated but unfortunately came to a sudden end as a full course caution waved with the field bunching up behind the pace car. Time ran out and officials threw the checkered a few laps later with Acker in first ahead of Fogg in second and Paul Marino in third. Kyle Eggleton and Douglas Lee of Portland, Ore., rounded out the top five. The second SRF regional of the weekend looked like it was going to be awarded to Douglas Lee as he was on cruise control leading his way to the checkered. However, nobody told him about Mark Ballengee who was on a fierce charge from his near last place starting position. Ballengee found himself closing in on Lee and made a successful bid for the lead on the ninth lap. Ballengee led all remaining circuits then collected the win ahead of Lee in second and Tom Miserendino in third. Doug Stewart and Aaron Stein completed the top five. Following a post race penalty on Ballengee for passing for the lead during a yellow flag F500 - The only screaming Formula 500 in this race was piloted by Mark Greenwald of the San Francisco Region. 8 P a g e 8 C a l C l u b N e w s J a n u a r y / F e b r u a r y Tyler Vance (#85) had an up and down weekend. Here he battles Tim Weaver and Jeff Walker in Spec Miata. Dennis Baer Photo Peter West showed up for a test session in preparation for the upcoming Pacific supplied event officals with video showing his pass was actually made under green. His victory was restored and protest fee refunded, according to a witness. SF - Out of 32 entries in this group there was just one Spec Ford entered with driver Arthur Beach happy to take on the responsibility of representing this open wheel class alone. Beach raced strong and found himself sandwiched between some of the faster SRF guys by race end when a full course caution waved forcing a yellow flag finish. Beach earned the Spec Ford win and a top 10 overall finish in his #73 Crossle. Beach did it again in Spec Ford on Sunday with another class win and a solid 16th overall finish. FV - Charlie Turner and Scott Buralli were the two lone entrants in Formula Vee. Turner was fastest in qualifying and set the race pace from the start. Late in the race a full course caution flew for an unknown incident just as Buralli dropped off the scope. Turner collected the class win when officials called a yellow/checkered finish. Buralli was credited with second three laps down to the winner. Turner continued his win streak by doing it again on Sunday but without his buddies to dice with on this day. FST - Eric Boghossian was the lone qualifier giving him a pole starting position ahead of Lucien Le Blanc. Boghossian led from the start with Le Blanc in tow. The two ripped around Autoclub Speedway up to the caution that killed it for this group. The two were in formation under a full course caution up to the checkered flag where Boghossian collected another class win ahead of Le Blanc in second. Le Blanc stepped it up Sunday and SCCA MEMBER SPECIAL 15% Rack Rate collected the FST win as Boghossian dropped out on lap 11 with problems. Group 9 - Spec Miata Who would have imagined during the winter break that Spec Miata would do a flip flop on us. Regional Spec Miata went from a moderately contested class last year to one of the most competitive today. For those who missed the 2011 opener we're here to tell you that the boys are back! The big names we're familiar with are all back and committed to bringing us the highest level of racing entertainment possible throughout It is the perfect platform for Tyler Vance, 2010 Cal Club Rookie of the Year and defending Regional Spec Miata Champion, to strut his stuff and show these guys what they missed out on last year when he won everything as a rookie. When the checkered flew in qualifying Saturday it was clear what they had to deal with a hot-shoe. Vance put himself on top of the qualifying chart with fast time picking up where he left off in When the green flag waved for Saturday's Regional Vance darted into the lead but under pressure from Jeff Walker and Tim Weaver. The two wanted by and applied as much pressure they could apply trying to make the teenager crack. On the second lap Walker flexed his muscles collecting the lead sucking Weaver into second behind him. Vance now in third wasted no time moving back to second behind Walker. Four laps later Vance was back in the lead fighting off Walker and Weaver for control of the race. Trouble set in for Vance though on lap nine when he dropped out of contention allowing Walker to reclaim the point with mirrors full of Weaver and John Stott. On the 11th circuit Weaver made his move and secured the lead then two laps later Stott snagged second pushing Walker back to third. They raced off to the finish as Weaver collect the win ahead of Stott in second and Walker in third. Just a whisker back in fourth was Chuck Matthews with Clement Lee who rounded out the top five. Sunday s grid was set by yesterday s finishing order. Weaver led lap 1, then Rob Burgoon led lap 2, but Matthews stepped up and took command on lap 3 as Vance worked his magic from his last place starting position. Vance was in second by lap 4 behind Matthews. On lap 10 Weaver returned to challenge and moved from third to first. Vance pressed Weaver with Matthews in third. The trio entered the last lap when Vance moved to first then collected the win ahead of Weaver in second and Matthews in third. Event officals penalized Vance two positions for passing two cars before the the starter waved the green flag. Vance was moved to third allowing Weaver to collect the first place trophy cementing his position as the current Cal Club Spec Miata Regional point leader. Group 10 - DSR, FA, CSR, FS, FC, FM, S2000 DSR - Lee Alexander turned this race into a demonstration of speed on Saturday afternoon. He was untouchable. The Las Vegas resident screamed around the Fontana race circuit earning credit for leading every lap, collecting the DSR trophy, honor of a first overall finish plus a new DSR Autoclub Speedway track record. James Kuhns finished second in class some 5 laps down to the winner. Sunday s results were a carbon copy from yesterday when Alexander again set the race pace then collected another DSR win over Kuhns in second. That s three wins for Alexander this weekend as he kicks off his 2011 season with force. Dennis Baer Photo Regional DSR points and controls the SoPac National points chase as well. FA - Formula Atlantic was the biggest class in this group with a total of eight entries led by Frank Cusack of Woodside, Calif. who set fast time in qualifying. When the green waved Cusack and Jim Mashburn hooked up. However, Vito Racano and Chris Emanuel were on the move forward to challenge. They picked their way through the field one at a time until Racano was sitting third by lap nine and Emanuel was fourth by lap 12. The foursome then raced in order to the checkered where Cusack earned the win ahead of Mashburn in second, Racano in third and Emanuel in fourth. Other Cal Club favorites included Dennis Goughary who finished sixth, Peter West in seventh and Peter Thomas who was out after seven laps. The invasion of San Francisco Region Formula Atlantic drivers continued on Sunday afternoon when Mashburn and Cusack raced in formation from flag to flag filling first and second positions in FA. Racano moved to third on lap 6 and held his advantage to the checkered. Gaddini and Emanuel rounded out the top five. CSR - In CSR qualifying Saturday morning Don Simons set fast time but failed to make the race leaving the door wide open for Steve Nicklin who now sits up front on the CSR grid. When the green waved Nicklin secured his position as class leader as Ron Fletcher was in striking distance. Michael Alfred ran in third ahead of Joseph Schifini in fourth. As the race unfolded Fletcher closed the gap some on leader Nicklin as the pair took the checkered. Nicklin finished first with a 1.8 second advantage over Fletcher. Alfred filled the CSR podium in third ahead of Schifini who finished fourth. Nicklin started from the pole Sunday and took quick command of the race pace with Fletcher in pursuit. The challenge ended for Fletcher on lap 12 when he dropped out moving Alfred and Schifini to third. The trio raced to the checkered where Nicklin sealed the win ahead of Alfred in second and Schifini in third. FS - Renny Damon qualified first in FS and 10th overall Saturday morning. Because he's the only FS entry his radar was on for someone to dice with. That was no problem as he ended up sandwiched between the top two CSR entries for much of the race. After 17 laps Damon collected the FS win and a solid eighth overall finish. Damon put in another good run on Sunday afternoon after a battle with CSR winner Nicklin late in the race. He collected another class win and a seventh overall finish. FC - Les Phillips returned to Formula Continental supporting the one car class in good form as he qualified first in class. When the green waved Phillips turned it on and raced to victory and registered an impressive 10th overall finish in the 23 car field.

9 J a n u a r y / F e b r u a r y C a l C l u b N e w s P a g e 9 FM - Steve Brown won the Formula Mazda pole over Dutch Schultz Saturday morning by a scant of a second. When the green waved the battle continued with Schultz leading the first two laps. On the third circuit Brown made his move and collected the lead then held his advantage for 10 laps. With the race winding down Schultz moved back to first on lap 13 and held it to the checkered where he claimed the win ahead of Brown in second and Ed Lever in third. Schultz and Lever were abandoned by their Formula Mazda competition Sunday afternoon but that just meant an opportunity for them. Schultz dominated the race pace and led all laps before collecting the win over Lever in second place. S Today's S2000 was a good example of a race within a race as pole winner Doug Ota, Joe Moran and Gary Holcomb put on a show for spectators. Ota wasted no time flexing his aggressive nature letting Moran and Holcomb know they'd have to step it up to get the job done. On lap six Moran made his move and snagged the lead from Ota. Moran maintained his advantage and led through lap 12. Ota regained the lead on the 13th circuit and led the final four laps before he tallied the class win 0.55 of a second ahead of Moran in the runner up spot. Holcomb had problems and was out after 11 laps but still credited with third S2000. Holcomb hung around for the final race of the weekend on Sunday afternoon and his effort was rewarded with a class win. Old Business: Motion to approve October minutes with correction to read Mikkelsen not excused. Haneline/Jardine Passed Financial Report/Budget/Buttonwillow Report: Presented by Les Phillips. Ceci and Les will work on final budget for New Business: Landline condition was discussed. Nothing can really be done about lack of volume. Too expensive to replace. Will take radios out each time. Spec & Pro 7/SRF/SM points were discussed as to why they get more points. Because they have traditionally had large groups and wanted to give points further down in the finishing order. Discussion of June event at ACS should it be moved to Willow since a race group wasn t sold? Now that AMA is gone we won t get track rental day. Lots of discussion on pros and cons of running at both. Possibility of Les selling a group. Should know later in week so decision was tabled. Led into a discussion of how to get more drivers/participants to our events. United States Road Rally Challenge Jeanne English requested sponsorship of $2500 from Cal Club. Need more information. Tabled for now. Pro 7 engines: Ceci had some requests from some drivers to change the Pro 7 engines to 13B as parts were getting harder to come by for 12A. Stott thinks 13B parts will be just as hard to come by. Keep consistent with AZR, which is 12A. Will stay the same. Entry fees for Pacific Coast Road Racing Championships was set at $295. Double Rational & San Diego Region involvement What they put in they get back percentage wise. Discussion of whether we still need the comp. committee or go back to having class reps. Tabled for now. Les will look into getting Toyo contingency for ITA to encourage SM s to double dip. Meeting adjourned at 1:25 p.m. Phillips/Jardine Respectfully submitted Linda Haneline Secretary

Elliot Shev Photo By Elliot Shev SAN DIEGO - (January 30, 2011) The first Championship event of the year was produced by SCAT at the west lot at Qualcomm. The weather was cold and windy with rain threatening most of the day. The first five groups had very good conditions with a partly cloudy sky. However, group six was treated to rain halfway through the grid prior to everyone getting one dry run in. The first rain made wet, then the oil came up and Ron Chapman is presented with the Starlight Award. Elliot Shev Photo was it ever slick. Although we all had to drive in the same conditions, the first hand full of cars that beat the rain, maintained their lead. That s racing and that s what keeps us coming back. I would like to acknowledge our Cal-Diego Paralyzed Vets group for their participation in SOLO and to their service to our country. When you see them at our events let them know you appreciate their service to our country and for participating in SOLO. See you all at the next event! Cool stuff raffled off to banquet attendees. 13 J a n u a r y / F e b r u a r y G r i d L i n e s P a g e 1 3 J o h n M o r t o n S o C a l R a c i n g L e g e n d By Norm DeWitt John Morton has had so many career paths in racing, from being the first to race a 427 Cobra (Sebring 1964), to his legendary success as part of the BRE Datsun team, then from F5000 on to CART open wheel, eventually becoming one of the top IMSA GTP prototype drivers in the world. It all started at Riverside Raceway John Morton - I went to driving school at Riverside in 1962, at Shelby s driving school. Shelby s was the only driving school in this country, or the only one that I knew of anyway. I had written to a couple of the English schools the Russell school didn t answer me. The Shelby school car was a Cobra, the magazines had just finished with it, and only one other Cobra existed, the one Krause drove at Riverside. Grid Lines - So that was the beginning of the relationship with Shelby? JM - The article I had read said that he was the instructor, it was the first time I d ever seen him. I wanted Carroll Shelby to be my instructor, because that was what I d signed up for. GL Sure, he was a Le Mans winner. JM But, Shelby wasn t my instructor, Pete Brock was. I didn t know who he was, but I did well, I guess. The car was such a piece of crap that it was hard to really tell, it overheated every few laps. The magazines were done with it, so they were putting it out to pasture by using it at the school. I believe it had a blown head gasket the first Cobra. A day or two later, Lance Reventlow came up with the last Scarab the rear engine sports car. He spun a few donuts for some reason, and went out onto the track, but he never came around. He came back the wrong way, and said It s got a miss. The guys opened the hood and there was a rod out the side. That was almost the end of his driving career, he tried to drive that car at Nassau after that, but that was the end. GL Then Reventlow shut down the Scarab operation and leased the shops to Carroll Shelby, which became known as Shelby American. And that same week was the beginning for you with Pete Brock as well, who you later drove for in the BRE Datsuns. Sounds like you were absolutely in the right place at the right time. JM - Two things happened that week. Bill Krause came out with the Shelby, the first AC Cobra to race, and he drove it at Riverside. It was the second Cobra that Shelby had done; the first was the prototype which I d gone through school with. I asked Pete Brock to introduce me to Shelby, who was there testing with Krause, and then I asked Shelby if I could have a job. He said, Yeah, come and see me Monday. He gave me a job basically as janitor I wasn t old enough to race, I was 20, and you had to be 21. When I turned 21, I bought a race car, a Lotus 7. I went back east to race it, and won a lot of Divisional races raced at Elkhart Lake, Meadowdale, Mid-Ohio. Somebody at Shelby had followed that, so they knew I was probably ok. After I came back to California in the fall and got my job back, I had taken a leave of absence. GL Sounds like you were racing in the Central division. JM Well, it was east of California I was in the Chicago area. So, when I got back, Shelby went to the first race after I got back in the fall, he went to watch Ronnie Bucknum because he was going to hire him as a driver. Ronnie was driving an MGB, and I almost beat him with my Lotus 7 he was a star and I was pretty much unknown. That s when Shelby got the idea that I might end up driving for him. Ronnie became the first Formula One driver for Honda. GL So, with that race result at the end of the 1963 season, Carroll got the idea that perhaps your future with the team could be more than janitorial? JM I guess I wasn t a janitor anymore I would chase parts, mainly just a helper type guy janitor/parts chaser/go-fer. Later I did some of the light fabrication stuff on the race cars. GL 1964 was your debut with the Shelby Cobra team, at Sebring in the debut for the 427 Cobra, co-driving with Ken Miles. JM The first race I ran, he just needed a warm body to drive the car around. That didn t take place until during the race. There were nine drivers listed for five team cars. They were short one driver, figuring they would have a surplus of drivers when things started to break. But, none of them broke, and they were desperate. GL Right place at the right time again. From what I ve heard, the first 427 was a real handful. JM Yeah but I d never driven anything in a race, other than the Lotus 7. GL Big step! JM Miles had wrecked the car in practice, bent the frame and did a lot of damage. The repairs it wasn t even representative of what it could have been, having been wrecked. And it wasn t really an authentic 427 Cobra what you think of 427 Cobras. It was a 289 street car with heavy duty parts and a big motor, a 427 stock car engine. GL So did you stay with Shelby for the glory years up through 65? JM I was there through 1965, but I didn t go to Europe and didn t work with the whole team that year. They cut way back when they went to Europe, and I was never one of their mechanics. So, I raced my own car I had sold the 7 and had a little Lotus 23 that I raced. Shelby would enter the car for me, so I became a de-facto team car, painted up in the white and blue colors. He would transport it to the USRRC races along with the Cobras. John Morton with crew in his BRE D Production Datsun Roadster. That was the premier sports car racing in this county. GL Yes it was, up until the Can-Am series. JM - Yes, it morphed into Can-Am in 1966, which was when I started running the car on my own for several years. I shortly ran out of money, and for a couple of years, I ran club races. Then I got hired by Pete (Brock). GL How did you get the opportunity with BRE? JM - For 3 years I had been working for a San Fernando Valley company making oil pans for race cars. Brock had gotten the Datsun deal and was in the middle of building his first Datsun Roadster, he was pretty far along with it when his number one fabricator quit. He called me to see if I was interested in coming to work for him. I went to work there with the understanding that I would get a tryout (to race). GL That worked out well. JM It worked out really well. I wasn t the first driver, Frank Monise was. But when the second car was ready, which I had done the majority of the work on it was pretty much established that I was going to get to drive it for the remainder of the 1969 season. GL The 2000 roadsters. were you running the solex double 2 bbl version or the SU type carb std version? JM - They were Hitachi, carbon copies of the SU carb, and we ran both cars in D production. We did that (running the solex dbl 2 bbl carbs in C production) the next year. We were planning to run the Z car (240Z) that had just come out, and the car was difficult to develop. The biggest problem in the beginning was the crankshaft. The early crankshaft wasn t properly counterweighted. The vibration would cause the clutch to fail; all sorts of parts were falling off the car. We tried a rubber mounted flywheel, harmonic balancers we finally got a better crankshaft. It still had a harmonic; we were trying to run it at 8000rpm, where the harmonic became intolerable. So, to avoid that rpm, we started running them at about We did not get the Z car in time for the early races (1970), so we tried to make up points in the class by running the D Production car in C Production with the Mikunis on them (the Solex carb Datsun 2000 Roadsters). We actually ran one car in D, and one car in C, at some of the races. If there was a conflict and the races ran together, we would only run as a C car. GL How did the Runoffs go? JM - The first Road Atlanta Runoffs were in If we hadn t won the last two races with the Z car, we wouldn t have made the Runoffs. We had never won a race with the car, but we won the last two races of the season at Phoenix and Ontario. So, at the Runoffs I had the pole in the C production Z car, and the pole in the D p r o d u c t i o n c a r b y t w o seconds, but I wasn t allowed to race it unless somebody dropped out, because we had finished 4th in the division so we concentrated on C prod, and we won the race. My old car (Dprod 2000) was sold to Bob McQueen, and he won two National Championships with it. Both roadsters are now back in Southern California and are being restored. GL And for many years after, the Datsun Z car was the car to beat. JM In 1971 we raced the Z car and 510. We had the pole at every race we ran, the entire year. Trans-Am and the Nationals including the Runoffs, which we won again. GL Much later in your career you ended being part of Riverside Raceway history, in it s final years. JM - Pete Halsmer and I won the LA Times Grand Prix in 1985, and they said it was Riverside s last race. Then they decided to have another one in 1986, but we had mechanical problems, so I thought... well, we didn t win the last race. It was just something I wanted to do win that last race there. GL - Yes, the annual Last Race at Riverside. JM The last one for real was in It was my favorite race win, with the Jaguar at Riverside in 1987, because I had started there. They had a NASCAR race after that, but this was the last sports car race, the last Times Grand Prix. The first one was won by a Scarab in John Morton s 1987 Riverside win came almost exactly 25 years after he first drove there in the Cobra. They were the perfect bookends to a long successful career, a career as one of Southern California s most successful road racers.

This was a great article that explained what differentiates a CSR from a DSR or EP from HP. I have many people that ask me about the different classes. So many people are mystified by the classes and cars. Even a former racer I know doesn't understand the classes. This will help the visitors to the SCCA and Cal Club so much. I often wish I had this article to give them as it explained everything so well. Is it possible to get a copy of this article? I think this would make a great handout at every track. It answers the questions about the different cars and classes every visitor asks. Arthur Beach FF #73 Dear Arthur: After trading s with Cal Club they informed me this document is currently available at the club office. It is also part of a pamphlet they hand out at special events. Hopefully your inquiry will make this document more available wherever Cal Club races in the future.
