FIA Formula E Visa London eprix WELCOME TO LONDON Jean Todt President, FIA The second season of the FIA Formula E Championship is heading for its finale in the fantastic setting of London s Battersea Park, which hosts the last two races of the championship. Less than two years have passed since Formula E made its debut in Beijing and in that short space of time, it has established itself as one of the most interesting and innovative motor sport championships on the world stage today, which was far from evident when it began. Over the course of these first two seasons, the series has brought motor sport to the heart of some of the most beautiful cities in the world, reaching out not only to race fans, but also to the general public. In so doing, it has also focused attention on a theme particularly dear to the FIA, namely that of setting out a new model for sustainable mobility. When, a mere four years ago, we began working on this project together with Alejandro Agag, we were literally starting from a clean sheet of paper with these primary objectives and when we also look ahead to the near future, we can claim to have hit our targets. On the racing front, the London eprix looks like being a real thriller. The fight for both titles is still very open. In the Drivers championship, there s just one point separating the leader Lucas di Grassi, from Sebastien Buemi, while in the team battle, Renault e.dams has a small 11 point lead over ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport. I m sure that the title contenders and indeed all the competitors will put on a great show for the spectators that are expected to flock to Battersea Park, along with those who will follow the action on-line or on television. Putting on an event like this, be it Formula E or any form of motorsport, wouldn t be possible without all the time and effort given voluntarily by marshals and other volunteers. I would therefore like to thank them personally for all their work in Battersea Park, extending that sentiment to all their colleagues who work on the tracks and roads around the world. I also want to thank the Motor Sport Association for supporting this particular event, as well as all the other ASNs and Automobile Clubs that have cooperated with Formula E Holdings throughout the season. Finally, my thanks go to Alejandro Agag himself and all his colleagues and partners for what they have done with this FIA Formula E Championship. It is thanks to their efforts, enthusiasm and ability that the championship is what it is today. Monday 4th July will be a day to pause for breath, to look back with pride at what has been achieved, but then it will immediately be time to look ahead to the next season and the challenges that go with it. However, before then, we can all enjoy the show at the Visa London eprix!

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 9 A VERY FITTING FINALE Alejandro Agag Formula E, CEO Once again the Visa London eprix brings the season to a close, and what a finish we have in store. When we opened up the regulations for season two, we didn t know what to expect. Would one manufacturer come up with a vastly superior solution? Would the racing still be as close as it was during season one? How reliable would these new cars be? The answer to all of these questions has been incredibly positive. Four different teams have won races so far Renault e.dams, Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport, DS Virgin Racing and Dragon Racing using four very different technologies. DS Virgin opted for a two motor solution with a single-speed gearbox, while the other three all have a single motor but completely different gearboxes with two, three and four gears respectively! Despite these differences, we head to Battersea with just a single point separating Lucas di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi. With three wins each, these two have been the dominant forces this season, and it is only fitting that they should go into the final round neck and neck. As we saw last year in London, the British weather can be a real wildcard element. The brief rain shower we had during qualifying very nearly derailed Nelson Piquet Jr s title charge, and you cannot rule out something similar happening again this weekend. Last year s race in Battersea was a huge success, with 60,000 fans attending the event, and we are expecting more of the same this year. To ensure that they have the best possible experience, we have assembled the biggest and best evillage so far. One of the main attractions there will be the esports arena. On both Saturday and Sunday, nine of our Formula E stars will race head-to-head in simulators on this stage against one lucky (and very fast) fan. On Sunday, the final of our ground-breaking Pro Series Championship takes place in this arena. Here, 10 of the very best racing gamers in the world will do battle for the lion s share of the 15,000 prize fund. As everyone now knows, this will be the final event in Battersea as Formula E seeks a new home that encompasses the streets of London. I want to thank all the people who ve helped to put on two fantastic events, the residents of Battersea who supported us, Wandsworth Borough Council its input and the hundreds of volunteers without whom this event would not have been possible.

ADVERTISING FEATURE 15 JOIN THE ELECTRIC REVOLUTION Formula E is changing the way we view electric cars. When the first generation of electric cars hit our streets in the 1990s some people thought they were a novelty that would never catch on. But fast forward to 2016 and things couldn t be more different. With more than 30 models on the market and over 70,000 on our roads the electric revolution is certainly here. Drive the future today The electric racing cars you ll see in Formula E may seem like the product of science fiction, but you can get the same technology in a modern road car today. Instead of an old-fashioned combustion engine, electric cars use precision engineered batteries built by robots. Harnessing high voltage means electric cars have instant torque and powerful acceleration, just like Formula E race cars. More money in your pocket We re all looking for ways to save money on our motoring, and electric cars offer just that. Costing as little as 2p a mile to drive, which is 80% less than their petrol and diesel counterparts, you could save more than 750 a year in fuel alone. Added to that, you can save up to 300 a year on servicing so whichever way you look at it, that s a lot of extra money in your pocket. A car for every journey Some people think that electric cars are only suitable if you live in the city, but there really is a car to suit every lifestyle. Whether you re in the market for a city run-around like Renault s award winning ZOE or a spacious family hatchback like Nissan s LEAF you can t go wrong. If performance is what you re looking for, Volkswagen s stunning Golf GTE or BMW s ground-breaking i8 supercar mean drivers are spoilt for choice. Even motorsport legend Sir Stirling Moss has switched to an electric car. Electric motoring is here to stay, if you want to find out more about how you can make the switch, visit goultralow.com

16 ABOUT FORMULA E DRIVE THE FUTURE Everything you need to know about the world s first all-electric racing series The FIA Formula E Championship was the brainchild of FIA President Jean Todt. His vision for creating a championship to showcase the potential of electric vehicles was shared by Alejandro Agag, who established Formula E Holdings to run the series. In under two years it went from concept to reality, with the first race taking place in Beijing on September 14, For season two, a host of changes have been made to the regulations to make the cars faster, the racing more exciting and the fans more engaged and entertained. Here is your essential guide to Formula E. THE CARS The chassis are the same as season one. They were built by Italian racing car specialists Dallara and are made of a carbon fibre/aluminium honeycomb composite. They have been crash-tested to the same stringent standards as Formula 1. Each of the nine teams has four cars. The bodywork, wings and suspension are produced by a French company called SPARK, which was established especially for Formula E. For season two, the teams are allowed to produce their own rear suspension. The settings need to be the same on both sides and the wheelbase has to be the same as in season one. The large fairings on the front wing are designed to minimise the wind resistance caused by the front wheels, while the two large fins that protrude from the side of the chassis are part of the crash structure and offer no aerodynamic benefit. Another change for this season is that the teams are free to choose their own wheel supplier. The wheels have to comply with minimum and maximum dimensions and are still 18-inch, but the freedom of supplier means the teams can seek solutions that improve brake cooling or help to save weight. The brakes themselves have been changed too, with the compound of the pads and discs altered to improve braking performance. Batteries produce 200kw

20 ABOUT FORMULA E ENTERTAINMENT Formula E is unique in sport in that it allows the fans to have a say in influencing the result. This is through FanBoost. For season two this has been refined. And you can now vote for your favourite driver DURING the race. Voting closes six minutes into the race. This means the three winners will have an extra boost only on their second cars. Fans can vote via the official Formula E website and app or via Twitter and Instagram using the #FanBoost hashtag. Away from the race track, Formula E fans are entertained by EJ. This mysterious helmeted figure keeps a party atmosphere going with bespoke tunes. EJ can be found in the evillage, where he s based on the podium, which is where you will also find the drivers as they spray the victory champagne and collect their trophies. In London, six up and coming artists will entertain you with live music in the evillage. To see the stars of the future in action, here are the times when they will be playing the Music Stage: SATURDAY 13:00 13:25 Loop 14:30 14:55 Lester Clayton 15:05 15:30 Chimes SUNDAY 13:00 13:25 Luke Carey 14:30 14:55 Ellie Rose 15:05 15:30 Draper

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 21 RULES Formula E is not only unique in that the cars are all-electric, it s also different in the fact that all the action takes place over just one day. PRACTICE There are two practice sessions. These are an opportunity for the teams and drivers to refine the set-up of their cars. This typically involves the tyre pressures, the ride height and the rebound rates of the springs. Electric cars need to be as efficient as possible, so the cars run much less severe wings angles than you would normally see on street tracks. The drivers are able to do one 200kw qualifying simulation lap per session. Super Pole line up at the Visa Paris eprix QUALIFYING The 18 drivers are divided into two groups of four and two groups of five by means of a lottery. Each group has six minutes during which they have to complete an out-lap, a warm-up lap at 170kw and a 200kw qualifying lap. The overall five fastest drivers then progress to the Super Pole shoot-out a new addition for season two. In this 15-minute session the drivers go out one-by-one starting with the person who set the fifth fastest time and ending with the driver who was fastest. When one driver crosses the line to start his 200kw lap, the next driver is sent out. The order from Super Pole decides the order for the top five places on the grid, with spots 6-20 made up of the order from the group stages. RACE Formula E races begin with a standing start, with the cars getting underway once five red lights have been illuminated and then turned out. The races typically last around 50 minutes. Mid-way through the drivers are required to change cars. The reason for the car swap is that current battery technology does not allow for cars to be driven at racing speeds for more than around 25 minutes. It is the aim of Formula E to advance battery technology to the extent that this system is redundant in season five. During the pitstop the driver comes into the pits, stops in his garage and unbuckles his safety belts and leaves the car. He then sprints across the pit box and jumps into the second car. When he has been safely strapped in he is allowed to leave. A minimum pitstop time is mandated at each race to ensure that the teams have sufficient time to correctly and safety strap in their driver. 24 24 ABOUT FORMULA E SUSTAINABILITY The concept of sustainability for Formula E is to reduce our footprint as much as possible and have a positive impact on both people and the planet. Formula E is not just a race! It is a highly advanced platform for technological and sustainable innovations between Formula E and our Partners to accelerate developments in the automotive industry.

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 25 Through the championship, our Legacy Programmes and the research, development and promotion of sustainable mobility, we address important environmental messages, offer solutions to air quality issues in city centres through the promotion of electric vehicles and clean energy to a global audience. THE LEGACY PROGRAMME The Legacy Programme is Formula E and our Partners commitment to leave behind a long lasting sustainable heritage through environmental improvements and creating social awareness. In order to help us address two of the most pressing contemporary global issues, air quality and access to safe water, we have selected Official International Foundation Partners and experts in their field: One Drop and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Alongside our Foundation partners, Formula E has organised Gala Dinners on race weekends during which auctions are held to raise funds for each official charity. Last year, $1million was raised through these Gala Dinners which benefited a joint sustainable project in Guatemala, ensuring sustainable living conditions and safe water access to over 35,000 people, thus accelerating the economic development and the quality of life of entire communities. This year, once again the London Gala Dinner will benefit both charities. For the VISA London eprix, as part of our local legacy we are supporting StreetGames, a UK-based inclusive sports charity whose mission is to make sports more accessible to young people from the lowest socio-economic communities. Their moto is Changing Sport, Changing Communities, Changing Lives, and they are a brilliant example of how sports can be used as a powerful tool for social change and increased wellbeing in young people. StreetGames will be the evillage with some exciting activities, so make sure you come join in the fun!

44 SEASON SO FAR THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE Three drivers have a mathematical chance of succeeding Nelson Piquet Jr as the FIA Formula E Champion this week, here s how their season played out.

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 45

46 SEASON SO FAR Round 1 BEIJING eprix, CHINA WINNER: Sébastien BUEMI, Renault e.dams Sebastien Buemi made history in Beijing by becoming the first driver in Formula E to attain a perfect score. After taking pole position by almost 0.3s over team-mate Nico Prost (and over a second faster than the nearest non-renault e.dams entry), Buemi made a great start and strolled away to a comfortable lead, setting the fastest lap in the process to ensure he scored a maximum of 30 points. A mid-race Full Course Yellow stopped him from fully demonstrating the potential of his team s new powertrain package, but the dominance of his and the team s performance had fired a warning shot to their rivals that the bar had been well-and-truly raised. Lucas di Grassi started from fourth on the grid in his Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport car, but gained a position when Prost made a mistake and took to the escape road. He gained a further spot when the Mahindra team gave Nick Heidfeld an over-long pit stop, which dropped the German to fourth. Di Grassi came under a bit of pressure from Prost, once he had worked his way past Heidfeld, but a broken rear wing meant the Frenchman was forced to pit for repairs. This left di Grassi in a safe, but distant second. Sam Bird had a difficult qualifying in the DS Virgin and just cracked the top 10 in ninth. He drove a charging opening stint until a small mistake under braking sent him down an escape road and back to 11th place. He once again fought his way up the order, overtaking team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne in the process. The timing of the full course yellow cost him at least one place, but he opened his season two account with seventh.

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 49 Round 2 PUTRAJAYA eprix, MALAYSIA WINNER: Lucas DI GRASSI, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport It was hot, really hot and uncomfortably humid as the series moved to Putrajaya in Malaysia for round two. With the cars still basically brand new, the heat took its toll on the machinery and created one of the most topsy-turvey and unpredictable races in Formula E so far. Buemi was on pole once again, this time by almost four-tenths from the Venturi of Stephane Sarrazin. But the Frenchman was in trouble before the race even started, and with his car refusing to start he was pushed into the pits. This left Buemi free to hold the lead into the first corner, and for the opening 14 laps it appeared as if this would be a repeat of Beijing. Then, suddenly, Buemi ground a halt. After a system reset the car started going again, and headed straight for the pits. First place had become last. This left Loic Duval in the lead from Antonio Felix da Costa and di Grassi. A slow pitstop dropped Duval to third, and when da Costa s car also stopped on track di Grassi took the lead, which he held to the flag for his first win of the season. In an amazing final few laps, both Dragon cars succumbed to suspension failure while on course for a podium Duval s incident also causing Robin Frijns to hit the wall while Prost nerfed his car gently into the barriers. All of this promoted Sam Bird into an unlikely second place, from 14th on the grid!

50 SEASON SO FAR Round 3 PUNTA DEL ESTE eprix, URUGUAY WINNER: Sébastien BUEMI, Renault e.dams Having set the pace in the qualifying group, Buemi was the odds-on favourite for a third straight pole as the series hit the beach in Punta del Este. But a crucial mistake in Super Pole left him back in fifth with di Grassi and Bird among the four drivers starting ahead of him. Di Grassi was dispatched off the line and the remaining three fell within seven laps as Buemi charged his way to the front for his second win of the season. Di Grassi battled his way past Bird, while the Dragon team-mates were passed during the pit stop. Bird also passed Duval in the pits, but lost the place again almost immediately as his car developed a technical fault. Despite his best efforts, he couldn t get it to restart, and his race was run.

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 51 Round 4 BUENOS AIRES eprix, ARGENTINA WINNER: Sam BIRD, DS Virgin Racing A mistake on his qualifying hot lap cost Buemi dear and meant he lined up 18th and last for the Buenos Aires race. This left the door open for his rivals to take advantage, and it was Bird who came to the fore, grabbing a stunning pole position. With the fastest car and driver combo so far out of position, the stage was set for an epic race and it delivered with arguably the best Formula E race so far. By the end of lap one Buemi was already up to 15th, and he continued to pass a car a lap and he raced his way into the points. Superb pitwork moved him into fourth and great passes on Sarrazin and di Grassi made the seemingly impossible win a possibility. But Bird had driven a brilliant race out in front and he repelled all of Buemi advances to hold on for his first win of the season. Di Grassi had started in seventh, but raced hard to get into second place. He pushed just a fraction too hard when the mid-race yellow flag period ended, which gave Buemi the opportunity he needed to make a move, but third place kept up his amazing record of finishing on the podium at every race.

52 SEASON SO FAR Round 5 MEXICO CITY eprix, MEXICO WINNER: Jérôme D AMBROSIO, Dragon Racing There was a huge sting in the tail of the race in Mexico City as on-track winner di Grassi was disqualified for one of his cars being underweight. Di Grassi had driven a great race, making a crucial pass on Prost just before the stops and picking off D Ambrosio for the lead just after. The Brazilian s disqualification moved Buemi into second place. After yet another mistake in the Super Pole section of qualifying, he started back in fifth with probably the fastest car on track. After relieving Daniel Abt of fourth with a great around-the-outside pass, he was promoted to third after gaining a place on his team-mate Prost in the pits. From there to the end he was involved in a frantic battle with D Ambrosio, during which they bumped and banged and fought as hard as they could within the rules, with D Ambrosio ultimately holding on. Bird started back in 10th on a track that really didn t suit the DS Virgin. He fought hard especially with Frijns, to come home eighth, which became seventh when di Grassi s penalty was applied.

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 53 Round 6 LONG BEACH eprix, USA WINNER: Lucas DI GRASSI, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport Di Grassi bounced back in sensational fashion in Long Beach, taking a brilliant win by a comfortable margin. Bird did a sensational job in qualifying to deny di Grassi a first Formula E pole by just 0.009s, and it was the Brit who led the way in the early stages. Di Grassi bided his time, sized Bird up and made the critical pass for the lead on lap 12. He didn t instantly pull away, and Bird remained a threat up until the pitstops. However, on his out-lap he was caught out by cold brakes and had to take to an escape road. He soon recovered, but had dropped to seventh. After an overly cautious qualifying run left him seventh on the grid, Buemi took advantage of an error by Heidfeld to move into sixth. Fifth place followed with a great pass on Abt into the hairpin, but an ill-judged lunge on Frijns left Buemi with substantial damage and a drivethrough penalty for causing a collision. This dropped him out of the top 10, and left him with just the consolation of two bonus points for fastest lap.

54 SEASON SO FAR Round 7 PARIS eprix, FRANCE WINNER: Lucas DI GRASSI, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport Di Grassi was one again denied pole by Bird as the series moved to Paris, while Buemi struggled to get heat into his tyres and was back in eighth. Di Grassi made a superb start to leap into the lead almost instantly, and he held station at the front from there until the end of the race for his third win of the season. Bird was also jumped by DS Racing team-mate Vergne, and the pair had a great tussle as they fought tooth and nail for the place. Another small error on the brakes once again sent Bird down the escape road, which dropped him back to sixth. On a track where overtaking was difficult, Buemi patiently worked his way up the order, pulling off strong moves on da Costa, NEXTEV s Oliver Turvey and Sarrazin. Prost didn t offer too much resistance, and Bird s mistake took him onto the podium. He was lining up Vergne for second when Team Aguri s Ma Qing Hua crashed and the race ended under the safety car.

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 55 Round 8 BERLIN eprix, GERMANY WINNER: Sébastien BUEMI, Renault e.dams Vergne beat Buemi to pole, and the pair staged an entertaining duel for the lead in the early stages. But once Buemi was ahead for the second time, he quickly established a comfortable lead and brought it home for his third win of the season. Di Grassi had the misfortune of being in the first, and slowest, qualifying group, and despite being satisfied with his lap, he was left eighth on the grid. The NEXTEV cars of Nelson Piquet Jr and Turvey were cleared on the opening lap. Bird was effectively taken out of contention from fourth place when he was shown the black and orange flag for a loose front wing fairing, while Vergne took himself out of third when he clattered the chicane and destroyed his front wing. A pass on Prost moved di Grassi into third and ensured that he heads into the finale at Battersea with a single point lead over Buemi. Bird s failure to score in Berlin means he retains only a mathematical chance, needing both his rivals to fail to score, while enjoying two perfect races. It s not impossible, just highly unlikely.

66 TRACK GUIDE TRACK GUIDE Once more, the FIA Formula E Championship will be decided at Battersea Park, situated in the heart of the British capital. Last year s winner SAM BIRD discusses his love for London and the opportunity to stand on the top step of the podium in front of his home fans RIVER THAMES ALBERT BRIDGE CHELSEA EMBANKM HOME SWEET HOME London was one of my favourite circuits last year not only because it s sort of my home city, but also Formula E created a spectacular track with many different corners. It was a great venue, a sublime setting at Battersea Park! The track is quite narrow in areas with some big chicanes and a very fast first corner which is very tricky because of the camber of the road. Obviously we get quite a lot of rain in England and we need a cambered road to drain the water but it makes for interesting handling when negotiating a high-speed left hander, trying to go over the crown of the road and back down the other side. It s tricky for a single-seater racing car and something that isn t necessarily normal when you re negotiating turns on normal tracks. CHAMPAGNE CELEBRATION Last year s podium was the catalyst to some of the greatest podiums I ve ever been a part of. I didn t expect that, I thought it was going to be a more traditional podium in front of a grandstand. When I walked on to that stage I was absolutely amazed, with thousands and thousands of people there standing in front of us. Obviously me being a home winner, I got an extra special welcome and it s something I will remember forever. I would dearly love to repeat the success from last year but what we do at Formula E, that started in London last year, is a very special moment for all of us drivers when we get on to that podium. It s become spectacular and it involves the fans more which is exactly what we want to do and what we have been doing as a series. BATTERSEA BRIDGE ROAD DOUBLE TROUBLE You have to remember that we had two races last year so it s nothing new now. So at least if you don t have a good Saturday, you can have some redemption on a Sunday. Or if you have a good Saturday you re kind of thinking you re going to have a good Sunday because I ve got the pace. The only worry is that if you re slow on Saturday, as it s like, Oh my god, what am I going to do? We didn t show any pace, what are we going to do tomorrow? but I m hoping that won t be the case.

68 RACING IN LONDON END OF THE LINE?

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 69 Clay Regazzoni and Derek Bell dice in 1968 The weekend s second and final Visa London eprix in Battersea, brings a temporary end to the return of racing to London. It had been more than 40 years since high-powered single seaters raced within London s city limits, but all that changed when the Visa London eprix hit town for two days of spectacular racing last year. The track was tight and tough, fast too. Overtaking was hard, but as Nelson Piquet Jr proved, far from impossible. The British weather even gave us the first chance to see Michelin s all-weather grooved tyres in action in the rain too. Despite the beautiful modernity of the machines on display, the setting of the event and the atmosphere the fans in the park created were a throwback to a bygone era Back in the days of lambchop sidies, glam rock and Ford Cortinas, it was the beautiful Victorian park at Crystal Palace that played host to the racing, rather than now in the era of bushy hipster beards, electronic dance music and hybrid electric cars, the beautiful Victorian park in Battersea. Given that both parks were built in the 1850s, perhaps it shouldn t be a surprise that the racing tracks created by their perimeter roads should bear more than a passing resemblance, although the elevation change at Crystal Palace ensures that away from a piece of paper the two look completely different. Motor racing at the Crystal Palace circuit started in 1927 with a motorbike race. The track was increased in length in 1936, and when it was fully tarmacked in 1937 it was able to stage the very first London Grand Prix. But when the park was taken over by the Minister of Defence following the outbreak of World War II, racing was put on hold. The track reopened in The infield loop, which had been part of the original layout, was gone, meaning the track was now 1.39 miles (2.2km) in length. Although narrow, it mainly consisted of very highspeed bends, and in 1970 future Formula 1 world champion Jochen Rindt recorded the first ever 100mph average speed lap during the London Trophy Formula 2 race.

70 RACING IN LONDON The 1970s was an era of extreme development in motor racing as aerodynamic understanding pushed technology onwards and upwards, and lap times ever downwards. During the last international meeting to be held at Crystal Palace, the 1972 London Trophy, Mike Hailwood set a new lap record of mph (166.39kmh). Given the narrowness of the roads, the lack of run-off available and the proximity of the trees, it was inevitable that Crystal Palace was no longer a suitable home for a race track. On September 23, 1972, circuit racing in London fell into a deep sleep, from which it didn t awake until June 27, Over the years, Crystal Palace had held all manner of races, including nonchampionship Formula 1 events, British touring cars and club racing, but it was the Formula 2 race that captured the imagination, attracting crowds of 40,000. A lot of the track still remains, although the start/finish straight has long disappeared. The North Tower section of the track a glorious collection of downhill sweeps, remains almost wholly intact, and it was on this part of the track that the Sevenoaks and District Motorclub organised a series of sprints in After three successful years, these events were cancelled in 2000, but the tireless work of the club succeeded in bringing them back in 2010, with two-day events taking place in May each year since. The wonderful backdrop has also resulted in Crystal Palace being used in a number of films and TV shows, not least Ron Howard s entertaining dramatisation of the Hunt v Lauda battle Rush and the classic Italian Job. As well as those sprints, there has been motorsport in London since then. The banger racing at Wimbledon ought to be a guilty pleasure for any self-respecting petrolhead, while short oval racing took place at Layhams Farm near Croydon until The Race of Champions visited Wembley Stadium for a couple of occasions and visited the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for its 2015 edition. Of course, Formula 1 has been linked with a street race in London for many RIght: Sam Bird was a popular home winner Below: Jochen Rindt leads a very sideways Alan Rees

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 71 The racing was tight and fierce in Battersea years. In 2004 a demonstration of F1 cars in Regent Street drew an enormous crowd. But over a decade later and there s still no sign of a race actually taking place. Instead it was Formula E, a brand-new championship that has brought racing back to London with a brand new track. This will be the last time that Battersea Park is used by Formula E. Now the championship is looking for a new home that uses the roads of the British capital and its world-famous skyline. It was a brief, but fantastic journey, and hopefully this weekend s double-header will give the Battersea track the send-off it deserves.

72 esports MEET THE SIMS! The FIA Formula E Championship has been pioneering in so many ways, but it is in its approach to the world of esports where it is truly opening up to a wholly new audience. Jerome D Ambrosio went head-to-head with Sam Bird in the second Race Off

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 73 It may come as a surprise for you to learn that competitive computer gaming, which is now universally known as esports, is big business. No scratch that, it s huge business. Despite skirting under the radar of the mainstream media, for the past decade interest in watching the world s best gamers do battle has been rapidly growing in popularity. To the extent that the leading exponents earn millions, and pinnacle of this League of Legends can sell-out 50,000-seater stadiums. As it is one of Formula E s core objectives to engage with a new, younger fan base, it makes complete sense to engage and embrace the world of esports. The first foray came in January this year, with the firstever Race Off. Held in Fulham, this event was open to the public, and gave the fastest 16 players the chance to race off for a position in the final, where they would be joined by Formula E stars Bruno Senna and Nico Prost. The fabulous Forza 6, which followed on from its predecessor by allowing players to race the world s first all-electric Above: Nico Prost took on Bruno Senna in the first Race Off

74 esports single-seater, was the platform chosen. For the second Race Off, we moved to the ESL arena in Leicester, where Jerome D Ambrosio went head-to-head with Sam Bird, in an event streamed across the internet on Twitch (the spiritual home of esports), YouTube and the official Formula E website. This event also marked the beginning of the Race Off Pro Series, where in the run up to each eprix, Forza gamers would complete a fastest lap challenge with the aim of setting one of the top 10 best times. The 10 fastest where then invited into a race against streamed live online with the top two securing a place in the Race Off Pro Series Championship Final presented by Visa. The first-ever champion will be crowned on Sunday, July 3 in the evillage area of the Visa London eprix. Twelve of the world s finest Forza racers will be competing for a 15,000 prize pot, and if the standard of the heats is anything to go by, this will be an enthralling occasion. With so much at stake, it will be a test of nerves as much as skill. As well as the Pro Series, Formula E also stages something called the erace. This started at the Mexico City eprix in March and pits nine of the Formula E drivers against one lucky fan in race simulators. Hosted in the Race Booth in the evillage, the fan is selected by setting the fastest lap. They then get to appear live against some of the best racing drivers in the world. Racing drivers are a competitive breed, so don t think that they ll just sit back and let their rivals win the eraces are incredibly competitive, even if the driving standards often leave a lot to be desired. But this is all part of the appeal. The races are broadcast live on the big screens in the evillage and offer an amazing opportunity to see a professional driver at work up close. Races take place on both Saturday and Sunday, and don t forget to have a go yourself and post a time you never know it could be you up there racing with the next Formula E Champion! Nine Formula E drivers and one lucky fan take part in the erace on simulators ahead of each eprix

ADVERTISING FEATURE 77 DHL AND FORMULA E DELIVERING AN ELECTRIC FUTURE DHL is delighted to once again be managing Formula E s race behind the race in its second year, delivering the cars and equipment more than 50,000 kilometres across nine iconic cities. To support Formula E s vision of a sustainable future, we are using the most efficient transportation options available while ensuring the championship schedule runs to plan and the teams can concentrate on their racing. Together with Formula E and other partners, we have also showcased the power of the championship to inspire change off the track with the Formula E estory platform, a business programme which highlights the innovations generated and tested during the first season and which will support further innovation in the future. The first season of the FIA Formula E Championship provided plenty of inspiration and the second season has already brought more excitement. The race action has captured the imagination of audiences around the world and already showed the advances that can be made in the performance of electric vehicles. We re delighted to be a part of this electric story again this season, and we can t wait to see the sparks fly once more on the streets of London!

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 79 The sheer size of the venue also means that we have been able to create the biggest evillage in Formula E so far. Signposted throughout the park, this is a must-see part of the whole experience. As well as being the setting for the extraordinary podium celebrations, the evillage has an enormous variety of things to see and do, music to listen to and interactive displays that are not only fun, but informative too. INSPIRE In the Inspire Zone, Formula E fans will have the opportunity to experience a number of interactive activities. There s an area showcasing the importance STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) has on the world of sport and in particular how having a greater knowledge of these subjects could lead to a career in Formula E. Find out if you have what it takes to be a Formula E driver by testing your mental speed, agility and reaction times in the Batak steering wheel challenge. Being a racing driver requires more than just quick reactions, so see if you have the stamina to compete and put yourself in the driving seat this weekend, and experience the power of g-force in our gyroscope and gain an insight into the physical demands of our drivers. Success in Formula E is all about how you manage your energy. But where does this energy come from? The regen in the battery is created by kinetic energy. Test out this technology on our kinetic dance floor where the more you dance, the faster your car travels around the race track. Battle it out against three other fans to try to win the race. RECHARGE Exhausted from all the inspire activities? Then take a break in the recharge zone, where solar chargers will allow you to put some juice back into your mobile phone while you relax in the longue area. There is electric go karts for the kids, and face painting too. Giant snakes and ladders and Jenga will get all the family involved. AROUND AND ABOUT Roaming throughout the evillage will be Bubble Man, a record breaking group of bubbleologists. They will be performing through the evillage delivering some of the most innovative and creative bubble shows it s not to be missed. And for those of you that simply want to relax, the Ibiza Angels masseuses will also be in attendance, These pioneers of the concept of the 10 minute on-site head, neck and shoulder massage, designed specifically to revitalise and energise, have an unrivalled 11 years experience of delivering safe, effective on-site treatments. With activities, food and entertainment available for all, the London evillage is shaping up to be spectacular, and we will now be accepting Android Pay with Visa to make the event even more accessible. To keep up to date on the latest evillage news, be sure to follow us on our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and through the official app.

82 FAN SITE DIARY: BERLIN HEY EVERYONE! We are Annika, Bettina and Dennis, and we currently run the official German Formula E Facebook Fan Site. With all of us being great motorsport enthusiasts, we were really thrilled when Formula E invited us to our home race, the BMW i Berlin eprix. Having hit the road on Thursday, we spent some time looking around the city before heading to the pit lane. The weather forecast for the weekend really good so we were able to spend a lot of time watching the pit lane and cars get set up. Preparations were in full swing, both out on track and in the garages and we were able to meet a lot of Formula E personalities. Our first really long chat was with Formula E debutant René Rast., but we also bumped into the world feed commentator Jack Nicholls. This became a running gag over the weekend as we kept bumping into him! On Thursday evening, Annika and Bettina were cordially invited to a media-only dinner with DS Virgin Racing, which gave an exclusive insight of the team. It was very exciting to meet people like DS Performance Director Xavier Mestelan Pinon, DS Virgin Racing team principal Alex Tai and of course their drivers Jean-Éric Vergne and Sam Bird. We used the time for some oneto-one Q&As, as well as talking about the future of Formula E. This was along with general topics, like driver safety and cockpit protection which have been discussed. We don t want to spoil anything yet, so we recommend that you keep an eye on our Facebook page. On Friday, we arrived at the media centre at around 9am and we met up with other Fan Site editors from all around the world, including those from Italy, Spain, Japan and even China. At noon, we headed off to the press conference and conducted interviews with Daniel Abt and Simona de Silvestro. After this we had the opportunity to do a track walk, which was an unforgettable experience! We started the track walk with team DS Virgin Racing but as we progressed through the circuit, we met many other teams and drivers! Many of these made it into our live Facebook video. In the afternoon, DS Virgin Racing invited three fans and ourselves to watch the shakedown from the garage. We were given a steering wheel and even some headphones to follow the radio communication during the session. We were even caught on TV! This was a great opportunity for all of us and showed just how fan-friendly Formula E can be. Race day was a bit hectic due to the intense one-day format that Formula E has. We took our positions around the circuit to watch both practice sessions and qualifying and we spent our time in between sessions at the evillage to enjoy the entertainment. It was clear that most people were supporting Nick Heidfeld and Daniel Abt, however our hearts had clearly been stolen by DS Virgin Racing. The German Fan Site team and Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag FAN SITE DIARY: BERLIN What an incredible view of the amazing podium celebrations!

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 83 After qualifying, we joined the autograph session, which gave us all a chance to speak to some of the drivers, as well as getting some awesome giveaways for our loyal fans! With spectators hugely interested, a bursting crowd formed it was great to see the drivers being so accessible to the fans. In addition, we were able to receive grid stickers, which gave us the required access to the starting grid before the lights go out. This was an absolutely incredible experience. We got to see all the cars up close and personal, took a Safety Car selfie and even got to meet Formula E s founder and CEO, Alejandro Agag. Having cleared the grid, we found a good spot to spectate at turn one to watch the race. A few laps before the finish, we snuck away to the podium, to secure the best seats in the house for the post-race celebrations. While we were there, we were part of the party itself, as well as getting a champagne shower from Sébastien Buemi, Daniel Abt and Lucas Di Grassi! By the end of the weekend, the three of us had not only become a great team and good friends, but our passion for the series had also grown considerably. The BMW i Berlin eprix was a huge success and it was great to see so many fans supporting sustainable racing. We d like to thank the Formula E team for inviting us to our home eprix, as well as DS Virgin Racing looking after us so well and helping us get right into the thick of the action! The Fan Sites get amazing access and to meet the drivers

84 LA MARZOCCO A PERFECT BLEND

2016 FIA Formula E Visa London eprix 85 For a lot of people, the day doesn t start in earnest until they ve had a decent coffee. Nothing against instant per se, but sometimes only a freshly ground flat white will do! Normally, at sporting events, your choice is limited to black or white, sweetener or sugar. But the FIA Formula E Championship likes to do things differently. Thanks to our Official Espresso Machine Supplier La Marzocco, it s not only possible to find a decent cuppa, there s every chance that it could be prepared for you by an award-winning barista. To sample some of these artisan creations, visit the Roaster Village, which you ll find within the evillage Fan Zone, that is signposted throughout the park. Formula E s commitment to sustainable practices means that we only work with partners who share our values, which is why La Marzocca was an ideal soul mate. Established in Florence, Italy in 1927, La Marzocco still builds its machines in the region but with a contemporary and advanced twist; the factory generates 100 per cent of its electrical needs using solar energy. This commitment is carried through to the Formula E events, where the coffee machines are equipped with programming that allows the machine to enter eco mode, ensuring that they run at their most energy efficient. To take this even further, their distribution network is exploited to ensure the most locally sourced produce is used. And by using local roasters they reduce their carbon footprint and support local businesses by giving them the opportunity to connect with the crowds who show up. Paul Kelly, General Manager of La Marzocco UK, said: La Marzocco strives to push ourselves to pay attention to the social and ethical responsibility that we have every single day and to become better innovators by doing so. Formula E has proved to be a perfect partnership as the world s most sustainable racing series pushing itself in the realm of electric car technology just like we do in the realm of espresso machine technology when developing new coffee machines. David Sale, Formula E Catering Manager, said: It has been a great experience having La Marzocco as part of our championship since the beginning. They were there from the very first test at Donington Park and have served our guests in Emotion Club throughout season one and two. The support we have had from them and all their distributors around the world has been exceptional, and also from the local roasters who have supplied artisan roasted coffee and professional baristas at each race.
