EDITOR S CHOICE Athlete-Friendly Academic Programmes Attract Sport Champions Post-Secondary Midstream Admission By Joel Tan Bowling Alumnus Singapore Sports School strives to deliver athlete-friendly academic programmes in the secondary and post-secondary levels. The athlete-friendliness of the programmes is one of a few factors that attract aspiring Sport Champions to Sports School including two multiple-medallists at the Southeast Asian Games, Au Yeong Wai Yhann and Jowen Lim Si Wei. Being In The Best Of Both Worlds Au Yeong Wai Yhann (right), a double medallist at the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Southeast Asian Games, is on Singapore Sports School's Extended International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Picture by Shaun Ho/Sport Singapore.

She had her academic path planned out two years ago or so, she thought. Au Yeong Wai Yhann wanted to enroll into a polytechnic to study Psychology. In the meantime, she will just play squash, and maybe win a medal at the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Southeast Asian Games. She did step up to the prize podium in KL not once, but twice for the Women s Team silver and Women s International Doubles bronze medals. After a two-year break from school and SEA Games achievement unlocked, Wai Yhann was all set to start her polytechnic diploma programme in March this year. Then, she learnt about the Extended International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme that Singapore Sports School offers and realised this is the best academic path to take. The IB programme is rigorous which I know I will enjoy, and yet, I can have the option to spread out my subjects over three years which will give me time to train and compete. It s the best of both worlds, said the 19-year-old. Wai Yhann will have her SEA Games teammates golfer Callista Chen Wan Qing, Pencak Silat exponent Nujaid Hasif Zainal Abidin, synchronised swimmer Debbie Soh Li Fei and badminton shuttler Crystal for company. Debbie had won 3 gold and 2 silver medals in KL, Nujaid returned home with 2 bronzes and Crystal came home with her second bronze medal in as many editions of the SEA Games that she had taken part in. Knowing how they have performed in their sports and hearing about how well they have scored in their studies, I am confident that I will be able to complete my post-secondary programme with grades that will get me into university, even while I continue to compete in international competitions. Wai Yhann is the first squash player at Sports School, and she hopes she will not be the last. When my juniors see that Sports School offers the conducive environment for high-performance student-athletes to excel in sports and studies concurrently, they will want to come here, too.

Jowen: I Want An Asian Games Medal Jowen Lim Si Wei, a double gold medallist at the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Southeast Asian Games, joins Singapore Sports School's customised Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management. Picture by Andrew JK Tan/Sport Singapore. When you are at the top of your game at the Southeast Asian level, where else will you go but higher? I want an Asian Games medal, and I will do everything in my power to win it including change schools midstream. This is why I m coming to Singapore Sports School to study, said Wushu exponent Jowen Lim Si Wei. In March, Jowen will start Year 3 of the Republic Polytechnic Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management programme that is taught on the Sports School campus.

The three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medallist (Singapore 2015 and Kuala Lumpur 2017) is also a bronze medallist at the 2017 World Wushu Championships. In the lead-up to the Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Asian Games in August, Jowen will be stepping up his training. The DSLM programme with a modified time-table will, in the meantime, give him more opportunities to compete overseas without affecting his academic scores. He can also tap on the sport science services in strength and conditioning, sport psychology and sport physiotherapy provided by the National Youth Sports Institute located at the Sports School. Thus, his midstream admission will provide the academic flexibility and support he needs to enable an increase in his training hours and overseas competitions. Even as I compete at the international level, I can t neglect my studies. When I learnt that Sports School wraps its academic time-table around a student-athlete s training and competition needs, I told myself, that s just perfect for me.

SPOTLIGHT MCCY Minister: Be Bold, Be Determined Awards Night 2018 By Basil Dill Ng DSLM Year 4 Past and present student-athletes gathered on 25 January 2018 to celebrate Singapore Sports School s achievements for 2017 at its annual Awards Night. Last year, 104 past and present student-athletes took part in 17 of the 38 sports competed at the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur and contributed to 31 per cent of the gold medals won by Team Singapore. Sports School also had 32 student-athletes at the ASEAN School Games, and they contributed to more than 40 per cent of the total number of gold medals won by Singapore Schools. In her speech, Minister for Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu highlighted the achievements of several notable SEA Games gold medallists debutant fencer Amita Marie Nicolette Berthier, multiple gold medallist synchronised swimmer Debbie Soh Li Fei and the men s bowling team that made history by winning the Team gold medal after a lapse of 22 years, of which five out of the six team members Basil Dill Ng Jui Chang, Darren Ong Wei Siong, Keith Saw Hui-Xun, Muhammad Jaris Goh Ali Akbar Goh and Timothy Theodore Tham Fu Rong are from Sports School. Ms Fu said she hopes their stories will inspire the younger student-athletes to be bold and determined in their sport pursuits, and she looks forward to seeing them wear the Singapore flag on their chest and doing Singapore proud on the world podium one day. To the high performance athletes, Ms Fu said: 2018 will be another exciting year for the Sports School as we look forward to the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, the Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, as well as the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. I would like to call on the Sports School team to strive hard and aim for better outcomes. We look forward to cheering you on as you fly Singapore s flag high. On the academic front, Sports School also excelled. Our International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme class scored an average 40 points out of a possible 45 for the third year with as many graduating cohorts. Among the top scorers, cricketer Tan Zay Hua and golfer Jacqueline De Los Reyes Young had competed at the SEA Games, and Muhammad Amirul Haikal Mohamed Hassim played in the ASEAN Football Federation Under 18 Championship. Both the SEA Games and the ASEAN competitions took place less than three months before the IBDP final examinations.

Student-athletes who sat for the GCE "O" Level Examinations achieved 5 or more subject passes to be eligible for Junior Colleges and Polytechnics. Every one of our Normal Academic student-athletes achieved 100 per cent subject passes and are eligible for Secondary 5; our only Normal Technical student-athlete has started classes at ITE. This year s Moo Soon Chong Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year recipients are gymnast Phebe Meredith Lau Zhi Ling and wushu exponent Chan Jun Kai (Secondary School); shuttler Crystal Wong Jia Ying and paddler Clarence Chew Zhe Yu (Post-Secondary). My MP, My Minister Hullo, Minister. I m so thrilled that you acknowledged me as your constituent. Of course I remember my sport star, said Ms Grace Fu, Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC. Ms Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Sports, was the guest-of-honour at Singapore Sports School s Awards Night on 25 January 2018, and in her speech, she had congratulated the men s bowling team, captained by my resident Muhammad Jaris Goh Ali Akbar Goh for winning the Southeast Asian Games Bowling Men s Team gold medal after a lapse of 22 years. At the poolside buffet dinner after the formal programme, Jaris introduced to the Ms Fu eight of the 10 members of the current National Bowling Men s Team all from Sports School s customised Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management (DSLM) programme. With the Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Asian Games coming up in August, Ms Fu was keen to find out how the keglers were gearing up for their selections in the coming month. We still feel the jitters and excitement in every competition, said alumnus Keith Saw Hui-Xun, a two-time gold medallist in as many editions of the SEA Games. With the upcoming selection for the Asian Games, mainly among ourselves, we will be as we always have been competitors on the lanes and brothers off them. Ms Fu asked swimmer Maximillian Ang Wei about his sport targets and chosen academic pathway. My immediate dreams are to qualify for the Asian Games and the Youth Olympic Games. I also want to win a gold medal at the Davao 2019 SEA Games. Beyond that, I want to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, said Maximillian, who will start his first year on the DSLM programme in March. Minister asked how the DSLM programme will help me achieve my sport dreams while I m studying full-time. I told her that I m confident the athlete-friendly programme will allow me to defer some modules for intensive training and overseas competitions; I have seen how my seniors

have benefitted from such arrangements, added Maximillian, winner of 5 gold medals at the 2017 Pacific School Games. Kimberly Quek, who had won the Master Final bronze medal at the 2017 Deaflympics, was instantly recognised by Ms Fu. You re a bowler, right? asked Ms Fu. Minister asked how I started bowling and what I plan to do after graduating from Sports School. I told her that I m in IBDP Year 5 and my target is to win a gold medal in a major deaf games and a podium finish in a national competition, said Kimberly. Ms Fu also spoke with three alumni who have returned to Sports School as staff. She wanted to know what their journey was like in the early 2000s and what the difference is for the current student-athletes. Miss Gail Chia, from the 2004 batch of Track and Field student-athletes, who is now a Strategic Communications Executive, said: Student-athletes are privileged to have so many opportunities and options provided for them to pursue their sport and academic aspirations, and develop Champion habits and character traits now. Sports School has many partners, some local and others overseas. Overseas training and competition stints expose student-athletes to a higher level of play when they spar with international athletes, which accelerates their sport development. The through-train programmes offered at Sports School provide student-athletes a longer runway to fulfil their sport potential. I wish I had these same academic options back then when I was still a student-athlete. The other two staff are Miss Kayla Lau from the 2005 Track and Field cohort, currently a Sports Administration Executive, and Miss Geraldine Ng from the 2005 Netball batch, now serving as Assistant Coach in the Netball Academy.

BOWLING Defeat Forms Foundation For Success For Owen 2018 Australian National Youth Cup and National Youth Teams Challenge By Basil Dill Ng DSLM Year 4 Coming back with a vengeance, Owen Wong Wen Fei left a mark on his fifth international appearance by winning the 2018 Australia National Youth Cup played at Campbelltown City Bowl in New South Wales on 13 and 14 January His first international competition was in 2016 at the same event where he finished in 44th position. Since then, he has been working on both his technical and mental skills was not the best of years for Owen as he failed to qualify for both the Singapore International Open (Under 15) and Indonesia Open (Under 21) Masters Finals; but as Albert Einstein said, Failure is success in progress, and this proved true as Owen clinched his first international title, the Singapore International Open Under 15 Masters Final in 2017.

Owen made the team for this year s Australia National Youth Cup and National Youth Teams Challenge through an internal roll off within the Sports School. The selection process was not without difficulties, but through adversity, Owen came out mentally stronger. This allowed him to use that strength and tools in the Australian Youth Cup, an Under 21 competition, to keep a clear mind and just focus on the process and not the outcome. Setting realistic expectations and not putting additional pressure on himself further allowed him to perform at his best together with the support from his teammates. He finished in 19th place out of 60 bowlers in the Qualifying Round, then 10th in Stage 2. At that point, he was 172 pinfalls behind Nathan Shoesmith, who had led in Qualifying and Stage 2. Into the Matchplay, Owen gained 10 bonus points in Match 1 and 20 bonus points in each of his next two matches. He claimed 10 points in each of Matches 4 and 5. With the title in view, he fought back in Match 6 to take 20 points and have the title go down to the final match, where he charged into the lead with a 231 game that sealed his victory 11 pins ahead of Nathan. Going into the Youth Teams Challenge, having a mental reset after the win was key for Owen. The focus for this tournament was to do my best and contribute as many points as I could to the team and with a combined effort, make it to the podium together, said Owen. Alas! The team finished fifth. But, in defeat, there were lessons which were learnt. The Australians and New Zealanders had strong team synergy. They cheered each other on and gave moral support to one another even when the pins were not falling their way. In an individual sport such as bowling, the support of teammates and coaches really go a long way. I am grateful to the Sports School Bowling Academy for nurturing me and providing the opportunity to participate in these events to show what I am capable of doing. Having an accomplished coach in Coach Catherine Kang, who has medaled at multiple international tournaments, really motivates me. For Owen, the upcoming National School B Division is the next important tournament of the season as he wants to help his Sports School defend the Overall Schools title. 18 FOOTBALL Adam The Albirex Signing With Albirex Niigata Singapore By Joel Tan Bowling Alumnus Twice he had gone to Albirex Niigata for training attachments when he was a student-athlete and each time, he returned with bigger dreams and a stronger conviction to one day wear the colours of the J.League club. Now, Adam Swandi will as the 2016 and 2017 S.League Champions has signed the midfielder for the 2018 season. Albirex Niigata Singapore FC is well-known for its discipline and a good style of football. Its successes in the last two seasons show that the club has been doing things the right way. I hope to be a playmaker and help us to win the League and Cup titles, said Adam, 22. In March 2012, Adam and four other Singapore Sports School student-athletes were chosen for a 10-day training camp with Albirex Niigata s youth team, paid for by the EW Barker Endowment, a gift from Temasek Holdings to the Sports School. The U18 Head Coach, Nobuhiro Ueno, was

impressed by Adam s ball control and one-touch passing, saying that Adam s skills were better than some of his club players. Adam was invited back for a second training stint. When Albirex Niigata FC Singapore was deciding on who to sign for the new season, General Manager Koh Mui Tee raised Adam s name to Chairman Daisuke Korenaga, who instantly recalled Adam as a youth prodigy, and as they say, the rest is history. My goal this season is to improve and take in as much positives from my new team and hopefully in between, I will get my National Team call-up, said Adam.

FOOTBALL Scoring On Sportsmanship More Important Than Winning Margin 2018 North Zone Football Championships By Andrew Aw Yong Rei Secondary 3C, Football Academy Pictures by Sim Siong Chor (father of Oliver Sim Jing Xi) and Suhaimi Salam (father of Raoul Suhaimi) Tackle, but do so fairly. Don t retaliate with violence when your opponent trips you. Even if you don t agree with a call, respect the referee s decision. These are as easy to do as shaking hands with your opponents after a match when you represent Singapore Sports School which promotes fair play and sportsmanship. Playing in the North Zone B Division Football Championship in the past month, our team has learnt more about sportsmanship. Even against a weak team, you have to play your best because your opponents want to play you at your best. It is not sport, and unsportsmanlike, if your efforts are half-hearted.

My teammate, Ong Yu En, said: Our aim is to score 3 winning points in every game that we play, and we have done so in each of our five matches to finish at the top of Group A. We played good games and our opponents appreciated it. Some of them have told us so. Another teammate, Muhammad Aqil Dany Jahsh Ruzzman, had this to say after one of the matches which we won by a big margin: Our opponents tried very hard. No one gave up. We learnt from their never-give-up attitude and were reminded that resilience is also a Sports School Value in which we live by. Another teammate, Marc Ryan Tan Wei Ming, said: Winning isn t everything. Impressive scorelines are nothing but brags. Integrity in play and humility in victory are traits of a good sportsman, and these are far more important than huge score margins. Earning respect from my opponents matters more. 24 TRIATHLON Let The Process Drive The Outcome Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Am I going to win? Will I finish with a Personal Best time? Such questions may cloud an athlete s mind pre-competition and seed him with stress that affects his performance. This was what Triathlete Nicholas Rachmadi learnt from Coach Mick Delamotte when he spent two weeks training in Sydney, Australia, in January Instead of being outcome-driven, Nicholas was taught to be process-driven. Right after this period of intensive and focused training, Nicholas had a platform to apply what he learnt. Going into the Nowra Elite Energy Tri Series race, Nicholas focused on doing things right and his efforts paid off with a first win of the season. I made sure I had a good cadence and arm swing on all three legs running, biking and swimming. Trusting the processes allowed me to compete in finesse and everything else fell into place. I am happy that I managed to carry out the processes right in that race. Nicholas will be competing in the OTU Oceania ITU Junior Triathlon Championships/Youth Olympic Games Qualifying Race next to mentally prepare himself for the 2018 Subic Bay ASTC Triathlon Championships/Youth Olympic Games qualifier. I want to qualify and compete in the Youth Olympic Games and the ITU Junior World Championships, and I will definitely be concentrating on the process to drive the outcome, said Nicholas, from IBDP Year 5 student-athlete.

TRAINING CAMPS FENCING Learning Styles And Substance From Visiting Teams Fencing Academy Sparring Camp By Joel Tan Bowling Alumnus This could be a really big year for our student-athlete fencers, not only with opportunities to qualify for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games but also participate in the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships and the World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships. With the current season reaching its peak, the Fencing Academy has intensified its training programme to prepare student-athletes for these important milestone competitions. Three Sabre fencers from TFSE Fencing Club in Budapest, Hungary, and six Epee and Foil fencers from Korea National Sports University, South Korea, were invited to Singapore Sports School for a 10-day sparring camp from 29 January to 7 February The visiting fencers, some of whom were

medallists at the Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships in 2016 and 2017, gave our studentathletes the experience of a different style of play and tactics. Our coaches also had the opportunity to learn from Hungarian coach Akos Patocs, an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Combat Sports at the University of Physical Education, who also coaches the TFSE Fencing Club. TFSE Fencing Club was a stop we made on our study trip to Hungary last June. We found that the club has a very structured and methodical way of coaching their fencers and felt that we could further learn from its coach, said Fencing Academy General Manager Loo Zhao Rong Luan. KNSU is a very well-known institution in Asia, producing many Asian and world-class athletes including the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Men s Epee champion, Park Sangyoung. Our Foil team had also trained at KNSU last December and we felt that they had benefitted from the experience.

The drills will help us to improve our agility, reaction time and coordination. Since the J.League team s training stint at Singapore Sports School from 19 to 24 January 2018, Boon Siew and I have been dutifully arching our backs for overhead balls and stretching to our sides for grounders.

Four male students from Daejeong Dongsan High School and two female students from Holston Girls High School provided two weeks of high intensity, fast paced games for our student-athletes.

CHARACTER A Prancing Start Project Champions Way To the beat of the drum and clanging cymbals, Singapore Sports School s pair of Southern crimson lions pranced in and out of three offices to wish staff a happy and healthy Lunar New Year. In one office, the lions, performed by Track and Field student-athletes, were teased to retrieve a string of hongbao on a pillar. Traditionally, Dragon and Lion Dance Troupes perform during the start of Spring to raise funds to sustain their yearlong activities or donate to the poor and needy in their community. The collection of $448 by the Singapore Sports School Lion Dance Troupe on 13 February 2018 is the largest single amount turned in for Project Champions Way, Sports School s annual fundraising campaign for the Singapore Disability Sports Council and Special Olympics Singapore, since the launch last Friday.

Roaring Start To FundRaiser Project Champions Way Project Champions Way, Singapore Sports School s annual fundraiser for Singapore Disability Sports Council and Special Olympics Singapore, was launched last Friday and over the weekend, Jolyn Deanne Sim Giak Ying worked hard to approach her relatives and friends for private donations. On Monday, the Netball Captain became the first student-athlete to turn in a fully filled card with a $200 collection. Jolyn, from Secondary 3A, has asked for a second card and she will be asking for more donations during the Lunar New Year festive holiday. For her exemplary efforts, Jolyn was rewarded with Roar, the Sports School mascot.

An Inward Discovery On An Outward Bound Course The 21-Day Outward Bound Singapore Badge By Michelle Lee Chuan Ling Swimming Alumna

After going through the mandatory five-day Outward Bound Singapore course in Secondary 2, I did not expect myself to be going on mud-track and sea expeditions again. With the completion of my International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in November last year, time was what I had aplenty on my hands. There was much that I wanted to do that I could do. As the adage goes, Time and Tide waits for No Man, but perhaps it could be on a pause button for 21 days? The size of a button, the OBS Badge we received at the end of the course from 1 to 21 December 2017, marked only the beginning of a new chapter in life after graduating from Singapore Sports School. An Outward Bound Course Like any OBS course, it was tough and challenging. Being a night owl, I preferred to stay up late than to wake up early. I still wonder how the 52 of us could wake up at 5.30 am for morning physical training or 4 am for expeditions. Although we had to run 2.4 km at 7 am whenever we were at base camp, we all tried to hit personal bests before going for refreshing jetty jumps. Our instructor ingrained in us the idea of expecting the unexpected as the future is a mystery that cannot be predicted. The absence of technology proved not an obstacle regardless of whether we came from polytechnics, ITE, JCs, IB schools or even the People s Association. An Inward Bound Journey Although this was an OBS course, it was also an inward bound journey of self-discovery. Over the course of five expeditions and countless kilometres, we were able to identify our own strengths and weaknesses as well as how to deal with them. As much as we wanted to stay within the boundaries of our comfort zone, how can you improve if you refuse to change for the better? It is perfectly fine to swim in uncharted waters and tread on unventured territory. Every activity was a new learning experience which we embraced with an element of the unknown embedded. As William Shedd famously said, A ship is safe in harbour, but that is not what a ship is made for. A Once In A Lifetime Experience

It is always difficult to imagine life changing experiences until you experience one. As unpredictable as the course was, I would not want to trade anything for the memories and friendships forged. This archive of memories ranges from learning trust using mousetraps on the first day to kayaking 132km around Singapore in a span of five days. December 2017 is a month I will never forget.

AWARDS GYMNASTICS Tumbles And Twirls Win Edlyn, Lincoln Recognition Singapore Gymnastics Awards Night By Joel Tan Bowling Alumnus The First Year student-athlete from the Through-Train Diploma in Business Studies programme was Group Captain at the SEA Games and had won a silver and two bronze medals there. 39 SCHOOL NEWS Let The Games Begin 2018 National School Games Gymnast Lincoln Forest Liqht Man, the torch bearer at the National School Games Opening Ceremony on 24 January 2018, led Singapore Sports School student-athletes in the Athlete s Oath a week later. In the name of all competitors, we promise that we shall take part in these National School Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to the true Spirit of Sportsmanship, without doping and without drugs, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams. Sport staff, led by Swimming Head Coach See Puay Kheng, also pledged: In the name of all coaches, we promise to respect all athletes, officials and coaches in these National School Games. We will act in the best interest of the athletes and schools, without doping and without drugs.

We will commit ourselves to ensure that the Spirit of Sportsmanship and fair play is fully adhered to and upheld always. With these reminders for fair play, integrity and responsibility, we re all ready for the challenging competition ahead. Let the Games Begin

There s A Part For Everyone Commemorating Total Defence Day Ahead of Total Defence Day, Singapore Sports School dedicated its 5 February 2018 Assembly programme to remind student-athletes of the five pillars of Total Defence military defence, civil defence, economic defence, social defence and psychological defence with the emphasis that everyone can make a difference. Dr Irwin Seet, Director of Student Development, showed student-athletes a video of some war heroes Lieutenant Adnan Saidi of the Malay Regiment s 1st Battalion, Elizabeth Choy and Lim Bo Seng. There is a threat to the peace and security of Singapore and therefore, we need to be prepared, said Dr Seet. He added that it s in everyone s interest to keep our island country safe, and all of us must play our part in Total Defence.

He also went through with student-athletes the evacuation protocol so that if a threat emerges in the Sports School, everyone can do his part to minimise casualty before professional help arrives.

Getting Together To Usher In Lunar New Year 2018 Lunar New Year Celebrations Sounds of laughter and excitement filled The Arena on the morning of 15 February 2018 as studentathletes and staff gathered to usher in the Lunar New Year. The celebratory clanging of cymbals and thumping of drum accompanied two Southern Lions as they strutted and pranced energetically into The Arena, Singapore Sports School's dining hall. Year 5 student-athletes in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme shared with the school body about the traditions and meaning of partaking in a steamboat during reunion dinner. Student-athletes then made dumplings which they cooked in hot pots, together with other ingredients prepared by in-house caterer, Sodexo. The Arena certainly felt warmer after that. Our very own God of Fortune then descended on the celebrations, distributing "lucky" dumplings or ingots to student-athletes and staff. Principal Tan Teck Hock rounded off the celebrations with Three Cheers, in traditional Lunar New Year style: HUAT AH! HUAT AH! HUAT AH!
