1 Playing information and Results CCC at Floriade Judy Tier The official newsletter of the Canberra Croquet Club We love croquet! three of our young croquet players called out as they waved from the Floriade train. The success of any public relations event is difficult to predict. But all the elements were in our favour at Floriade. We had a prime position, perfect weather, keen and happy volunteers, the Eire cup for a day and two giant robots joining in the fun. More than 650 enthusiasts were shown the basics of golf croquet and quickly proceeded to a six hoop game. Fortunately we had primary, secondary and tertiary balls which avoided confusion on our quarter size lawn. At times the competition between players decided who would pay for dinner or sleep on the couch. Sunday morning showcased Gateball. Our aim was to introduce mallet sports to the public and we assuredly did this to people from all Australian states and particularly regional NSW. We are very grateful to Croquet NSW for their croquet banners, postcards and $300 grant which covered all our costs. We distributed 20 vouchers for a free two hour lesson on October 11, hundreds of croquet postcards and many hiring vouchers. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this event such a success: Margo and Andrew Davies, Yvonne and John Grattan. 2 CCC Committee The CCC AGM was held on Saturday 4 July and included the electron of officials and presentation of trophies. Congratulations to all the elected officials as outlined below. New Hoop Racks Thanks to Richard Meacock and Peter Tavender for their work with the new hoop storage area. Peter Tavendar has designed and installed some very user friendly and space saving racks to house our hoops. They are much easier to access for all of us, which is brilliant. Richard Meacock helped with the installation. 3 Melbourne Cup Margo Davies Melbourne Cup Luncheon Noon, Tuesday 3 November 2015 Canberra Croquet Club House As in previous years there will be a sit-down luncheon at the club. Playing information and Results Association Croquet Congratulations to Alan Honey on winning the Queensland AC Open Singles Championship in late July. We also send our best to Alan Honey (2 nd eight) and Stephen Pearce (3 rd eight) who are currently performing strongly in the AC President's Eights invitational event in Melbourne. Best of luck to Alan Honey, Stephen Pearce and Stephen Richards in the CNSW AC Bronze Medal in Sydney on October. Playing Committee Update Stephen Richards Good progress is being made in the Club's handicap AC and GC singles and doubles competitions. If you are playing in any of these events, please continue to move forward expeditiously with scheduling and playing your remaining games. We are looking for a volunteer or two to manage the 2016 Canberra AC Easter tournament (25-28 March). 5 Golf Croquet Congratulations to CCC member Jamie Gumbrell who finished fifth of 12 players in his first tournament, the NSW Secondary Schools Championship. With the extended sunlight hours Wednesday night twilight GC has recommenced on Wednesdays from 5.30pm. All members are welcome with an optional dinner afterwards. Expression of interest to be CNSW Director - Rodney Teakle Following registration of the new CNSW Constitution the 5 person Executive elected at the last AGM become First Directors. These First Directors will meet later this month to form a Board and make a number of formal appointments (Chair, Treasurer and Secretary). As the new Board is to comprise seven First Directors there are two vacancies which should be filled as soon as possible. Expressions of interest to be one of those Directors are invited from people affiliated to CNSW and the additional Directors will be chosen from those who have expressed interest. Further information about the positions and how to apply are on the CNSW website. Gateball Canberra gateball teams continued their strong year and are a chance to accomplish the grand slam of state titles in the one year. No club has ever achieved that feat. Canberra will be sending two teams to the NSW Gateball Championship in Jamberoo in November which is the final interstate gateball event for Canberra teams have won every event they have entered in 2015 except the Australian Championship where they finished as the highest placed Australian teams behind visiting teams from China.

6 2015 Queensland Gateball Championship Canberra dominated the 2015 Queensland Team State Championship held at the Eildon Croquet Club in mid-august. Canberra was undefeated with 6 wins from 6 games Australian Gateball Championship The 2015 Australian Gateball Championship was held from 4-6 September in sunny Wynnum, Brisbane. Around 110 players from 17 teams from China, New Zealand and Australia were separated into two blocks before semi-finals and a final decided the champions. CCC entered two strong teams, the Canberra Mavericks and Canberra Sparkers. The Canberra Sparkers were in Block A which also included two Chinese teams. The Sparkers played well, winning five of their eight matches and finishing third in their block behind the two Chinese teams. The Sparkers played strongly against the Chinese teams and in both matches fell behind early before storming back strongly late in the matches.

7 The Canberra Mavericks won five of their seven block matches to finish second in their block and qualify for the semi-finals. In their semi-final the Mavericks fought valiantly in their semi-final and were cheered enthusiastically by the crowd as the only surviving Australian team. Despite early heroics by captain Bryan Johnson the Mavericks were defeated by the eventual champions Chongqing Chongqing defeated Shandong Dongmig 10-7 in the final in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 150. Congratulations to all players especially Judy Tier, Adrienne Fazekas and Andrew Davies who were competing in their first gateball tournament.

8 Gateball Scores CCC member Tim Murphy has developed and launched Gateball Scores for the Australian and global gateball community. This follows the success and widespread adoption of Tim s other mallet sport website Croquet Scores. Like croquet scores, Gateball Scores allows tournament managers to provide instant results to fans around the world. Gateball Scores includes a number of adjustments that support gateball tournaments (including countbacks and shoot-outs). Gateball Scores debuted at the Australian Gateball Championship in September and it is expected that usage of the site will gradually build over time as awareness and experience increases. Lawn Renovation The annual lawn renovations are current scheduled to commence on 7 December with two courts removed from action with the third court to be removed from 21 December. Subject to growing conditions, two courts are expected to be back around 9 January with the third on 16 January. Members will be provided further advice via . Caricature Gilon Smith Canberra member and previous National Director of gateball, Gilon Smith, was recognised at the 2015 Australian Gateball Championship. Gilon was thanked for his contribution to the game and presented with a caricature drawn by Gateball s Frances Wregg. Gilon was recognised for his steady hand and unruffled manner in the national director role. The picture shows Gilon taking a swing to the accompaniment of catcalls from some of his CCC teammates.
