2 Dear all, Welcome to the COBIS Secondary Games 2018! We are delighted to bring the Games back to Sheffield for a second consecutive year and we d like to welcome both new and returning schools to this wonderful city. 23 teams from schools in 13 different countries have come together for three days of competitive sports - that s 400 students who have travelled here to experience the glory of the COBIS Games. You all have one special thing in common - you are members of the evergrowing COBIS family! With that in mind, we want you to enjoy your time in the UK by taking in your new surroundings and the fabulous sporting facilities here in Sheffield, by meeting new friends and by sharing your experiences as a student at a high-quality British international school. We d also like to welcome the dedicated and supportive coaches, parents and family members who have arrived here from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East to cheer on the young athletes. Your enthusiasm for this event is recognised and appreciated and we thank you for all your hard work in developing and coaching the students who will participate in this global event. COBIS is committed to encouraging and cultivating the incredible student talent found in our schools around the globe, through a range of exciting competitions, activities and events beyond the classroom. I m sure you ll agree that the COBIS Games are a thrilling and fun three days allowing students to work with their teammates to achieve greatness while also supporting students from other teams within the COBIS family to excel and succeed. Finally, a sincere thanks to our valued colleagues at Sheffield City Council and the staff at the various venues across the city who make this event such a professional and exciting tournament. 3 Foreword from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield On behalf of the City of Sheffield I have great pleasure in welcoming you to our magnificent city. I appreciate many of you have come from different corners of the globe but hope your travel experience was pleasant and you are now looking forward to a weekend of events that will bring lots of excitement. During the weekend of competition Sheffield will see the talents of the young sports people within the COBIS family compete across three sports within three excellent venues across the city. A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes from many organisations. So I d like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at the Event Teams and Marketing Sheffield from Sheffield City Council, City of Sheffield Swim Squad, City of Sheffield and Dearne Athletics Club and Onside Sports. Plus special thanks must also go to the ever present band of officials & volunteers who constantly give up their precious time to support. Finally, I do hope that you enjoy your stay here and get the opportunity to see some of the many beautiful sights of Sheffield and surrounding areas. 4 History of the COBIS Games The COBIS Games were founded in 2012 at the Prague British School in order to create an event that brought together COBIS students from across the globe. The first COBIS Games were opened by COBIS Honorary President, Sir Roger Fry, for students aged Twelve schools took part in the inaugural competition with The British School in The Netherlands winning the overall competition. Following on from the success of the first COBIS Games, the 2013 Games were hosted at The British School in The Netherlands with more than 200 students from 15 COBIS Member Schools taking part. After three exciting days of basketball, athletics and football, The British School Al Khubairat were crowned the victors, coming first in basketball and athletics and second in football marked the beginning of the Secondary Games and the first time the Games were hosted outside of Europe, with The British School Al Khubairat hosting the third Primary Games and the British International School Istanbul hosting the first ever Secondary Games. The Primary Games took place in Abu Dhabi at The British School Al Khubairat with 16 teams taking part. After three days of gruelling competition, St Saviour s School, Ikoyi in Nigeria was crowned the Primary winner for The Secondary Games included 12 COBIS Member Schools for three days of athletics, football and swimming with St Catherine s British School Athens taking home the trophy saw the COBIS Games return to Europe to be hosted in Athens. For the first time, the Primary and Secondary Games were hosted together by St Catherine s British School with the competition taking place at the prestigious Olympic Centre in Athens. More than 500 students attended from 28 schools from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. In 2016 the COBIS Games were hosted in Dubai (Dubai College, Secondary Games) and Kazakhstan (Haileybury Astana, Primary Games) for 36 COBIS Member Schools. St Saviour s School, Ikoyi lifted the Championship Cup for the third consecutive year at the Primary Games and The British School Al Khubairat were crowned champions of the Secondary Games. The UK became home to the COBIS Primary and Secondary Games for the first time in 2017, with more than 600 students from 44 teams attending. After some mighty battles in the pool, on the track and on the pitch, a repeat of 2016 took place with St Saviour s School, Ikoyi winning the Primary Games and The British School Al Khubairat winning the Secondary Games sees the COBIS Secondary Games returning to the world class facilities in Sheffield, where 23 teams will compete to become the COBIS Games Champions.

5 Berlin British School, Germany The Berlin British School team is extremely excited about competing in the COBIS Games competition. This will be the fifth time the school has competed, having previously been to Istanbul, Athens, Dubai and Sheffield. Our team is truly international with students coming from Poland, China, USA, Tanzania, Russia, Canada, Columbia and of course Germany. The team is most looking forward to the football tournament, but it must be said, slightly apprehensive about the swimming. They are also a very friendly and sociable lot, who are keen to meet and make friends with the other competing schools. British Embassy School Ankara Established in 1959, the British Embassy School Ankara is a small school consisting of roughly 250 children. It provides the British curriculum for ages 3-14 and its reputation in academics and sport is renowned both inside and outside Turkey. BESA has attended the COBIS Games three times before and we are looking forward to participating in our fourth annual Games. We have been training enthusiastically since the start of the year and all students participating are eager to be able to compete and make friends in these Games. We are sure that this year will be an even better and more fun experience for all attending the Games. We wish all other athletes competing in the Games good luck and we wish for this year s COBIS Games to be as prosperous as the previous years.

6 British International School, Cairo BISC was established in 1976 and in 2008 moved from the centre of Cairo to a purpose built campus in the Beverly Hills suburb of western Cairo. It now has in the region of a thousand pupils from FS to IB levels. As always, the school is delighted to take part in the Secondary Games and this will be the fifth time we have taken part in the event. A number of the older students often talk about the inaugural games in Istanbul. The location and the facilities may have changed - the swimming event in Istanbul taking place in effectively a large greenhouse to the Sheffield Ponds Forge centre - but the ethos of the Games remains the same. Here s hoping the athletics is a bit drier this year though! The British School Al Khubairat The British School of Al Khubairat was established in His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE, has been the sponsor of the school for over 35 years. Physical Education and Sport play a major role in helping develop the schools vision of providing a world class British education, inspiring all our students to exceed expectations. This has been highlighted in recent sporting successes at international tournaments. The British School of Al Khubairat are currently the COBIS Secondary and Under 13 and Under 15 BSME champions. These successes can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of both staff and students and the continued support of parents within our school community. The team are very excited to join up with the teams from around the world to make new friends, share experiences and make lasting memories.

7 British School of Bahrain The British School of Bahrain are extremely excited to be competing in what will be their second COBIS Games competition - having competed for the first time in May Our talented Year 7 and 8 team comprises of students from a variety of countries including USA, Spain, Egypt, Cyprus, Canada, Turkey, UK, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The students for Team BSB were chosen, not only for their athletic ability, but also for their personal qualities such as cooperation, teamwork and kindness. The team has been busy training and fundraising for this trip by approaching local companies and holding school fundraising activities which has been fantastic to see. The team is excited about competing in all of the events and can t wait to experience the COBIS Games British Spring College, Awka Team BSC nicknamed The Indomitable Team, a prime - yet blooming team was born in October 2017 out of desire to strike a balance on certain students development; in line with the school s vision of...inspiring the best in (your) child. The students flourish both in their academics and also in sports which is a strong point for them. They are a team of eight boys and eight girls in Year 7 to Year 8 classes of the school born between September 2004 and September Two coaching hands have been in good touch with the team ever since taking them off from where they were before October 2017.

8 Campion School Athens Campion is an International school in Athens, Greece. After our wonderful experience last year we are, once again, really looking forward to competing at the magnificent facilities of Sheffield. It will, again, be a fantastic experience to compete against so many other schools from around the world, our students feel that this will be a great experience for them. First of all, they are travelling abroad and they will get the chance to really feel what team bonding and a team is all about not only on the field. They also have the chance to compete in a tournament of such a great atmosphere and sporting ethos. Children s International School The team comprise of year 7 and year 8 students who are all sport enthusiasts. A bunch of the team members are first timers at the COBIS competition while we also have a couple who are returning to make an impact at the COBIS Secondary Games. The team have been training since October 2017 for this competition and have put a lot into this. We are gradually getting ready and hope to come out victorious. We will like to thank the parents and the school administration for their support and encouragement. Go Team CIS!!!

9 Corona Secondary School, Agbara Corona Secondary School, Agbara is extremely excited to be competing in what will be our second Secondary COBIS Games competition, having competed for the first time in Athens Our enthusiastic Year 7 and 8 team comprises only Nigerian students. Living in a country that loves football and athletics, the team is eagerly awaiting the football and athletics competition! They cannot wait to meet new friends and put on a strong showing at the competition! Doha College This is the second time Doha College have participated in the Secondary COBIS Games and the students are very excited about coming to Sheffield. Having been training in temperatures of 40 degrees plus we are sure they will enjoy competing in a cooler climate. This is a wonderful experience for all the students and we would like to wish all the competitors every success and enjoyment. Let the games begin

10 Dubai College DC A The Dubai College A Team are very excited to uphold the tradition of attending the COBIS Secondary Games in Sheffield this year. Our team consists of Year 7 and 8 students from all around the globe, such as Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Australia, Canada and India. We have a young multi-talented team who are looking forward to competing against the best British Schools in the world in all three disciplines. Dubai College DC B Dubai College are proud to be given the opportunity to showcase our depth and strength by entering a B team in to the 2018 COBIS Games. These youngsters, from year 7 and 8, are eager to show what they are made of across all three days. Our team has many different strengths and come from Britain, France and New Zealand. This team is full of great characters who will no doubt thrive in the competitive arena.

11 The British School of Gran Canaria This will be our second year competing in the COBIS Games and we re excited to be bringing team members who attended last year and some new recruits! We re a talented group of athletes with a good range of experience in sport competing in; athletics, football, swimming, tennis, golf, padel, sailing and dancing. We re proud to be representing the Canary Islands and looking forward to making new friends from other countries. We may be small but we re mighty! Haileybury Almaty Haileybury Almaty are, once again, very excited and keen to compete on the international sporting stage. As a school we have been competing since the Games began and have always fully enjoyed the opportunity and experiences which this event offers. The journey from Almaty to Sheffield is a mere 14 hours but our Year 7 & 8 students are none the less eager to immerse themselves within the challenges and rewards which lay ahead of them. Bring on the starters whistle!

14 King s College, The British School of Madrid Soto de Viñuelas King s College Madrid Soto is delighted to be competing in our fifth consecutive COBIS Secondary Games. The team have been training hard for months and cannot wait to compete against schools from all corners of the globe. Our team comprises of mainly Spanish students, alongside a Dutch and British athlete. Our team are looking forward to taking part in all elements of the competition but most importantly for the boys, the Football! We can t wait to meet everyone and as always, I am sure we will be one of the loudest and most sociable teams, as per the countries outgoing culture. La Moraleja King s College School, La Moraleja We cannot wait to return to Sheffield again to take part in the COBIS Games competition. We had a fantastic time last year and greatly enjoyed the experience of competing against so many competitive schools from all over the world. For most of the pupils in our team this will be their first experience competing in the Secondary COBIS Games, after hearing all about it from those who represented our school so well last year, they are very excited and cannot wait for the games to begin. We have been working hard all year in order to prepare for the games, and we are looking forward to putting all the hard work we have applied in training into action, as we look to test our self against some of the best sporting schools from across the world.

15 King s College, The British School of Murcia We are very excited to be attending our second COBIS Secondary Games and our students are ready to compete. Hailing from Murcia, the sunniest part of southern Spain, we are passionate about sport. The school s location is perfect for us to practise with 300 days of sunshine as well as excellent access to all we could need. Our team has a range of British, Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese athletes making us ready for the international stage. As always, we love our football but have a great collection of young swimmers and athletes too. We know our school will be cheering us on from home, so we cannot wait to get started. New Cairo British International School NCBIS are a not for profit school in New Cairo, Egypt. With over 60 nationalities represented in our student body, we can truly claim to be an international school and within our COBIS team this year we have representation from over 10 different nationalities. We have taken part in the previous two COBIS Secondary Games and are keen to continue our success this year. Our squad have been training hard, as well as learning more about COBIS and the exciting opportunity that has been offered to them. They are raring to go and show everyone just how hard they have worked to get to the Games. We are hugely excited about the opportunity to take part in this exciting and inspiring competition and can t wait to get to Sheffield. Go Tigers!

16 Nord Anglia International School, Hong Kong Nord Anglia International School, Hong Kong (NAIS) is a member of Nord Anglia Education s global family of 55 premium international schools in Mainland China, South East Asia, Europe, North & South America and the Middle East. NAIS Hong Kong are delighted to be competing in their 2nd Secondary COBIS Games. Our team consists of mainly Year 7 pupils from Hong Kong, UK, China, USA, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Jordan, Germany & Austria. The team have been training very hard in all three disciplines and are looking forward to competing against other international schools from all over the world. Our pupils are really looking forward to the fantastic experience that the COBIS Games provides and very excited about visiting the UK. Rainbow International School Rainbow International School is well known in Uganda and the East Africa region for its high standard of academics, inclusiveness and disciple with excellent boarding facilities. We follow the Early Year foundation stage, International Primary curriculum, English National Key Stage 3, Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels. As an alternative pathway at post 16, students can opt for a vocational BTEC qualification allowing for a more practical and hand on learning. Sports at Rainbow is significant and compulsory. We have excellent performers that complement the excellent coaching that students receive at Rainbow. Giving back to community is a core aspect of RISU. Our student leaders are very active in forming their charity committees and organising events to fundraise and make a difference in the community.

17 St Catherine s British School in Athens St Catherine s British School are excited to attend the 2018 COBIS Secondary Games, and are looking forward to the challenge of competing against pupils from all around the world. Our pupils having been working hard throughout the year, pushing themselves to improve in all areas of the COBIS games, and we as PE staff are very proud of their efforts. Lastly we have some new competitors this year, who are ready to compete at a higher level and our competitors from 2017 are ready to compete and meet up with their friends! St Catherine s wishes everyone luck at the 2018 COBIS Secondary Games. St George s International School, Luxembourg St George s Luxembourg have competed in each of the secondary COBIS Games since it began in We finished 3rd overall in 2014 in Istanbul and won the Fair Play Trophy in 2016 in Dubai. This year we are sending a young team over to Sheffield with only two students who have competed in the Secondary Games previously. The students are looking forward to the experience and are excited to have the opportunity to represent the school in 2018.

18 The Regent Secondary School At The Regent Secondary School Abuja, academic achievement is our priority; we also place emphasis on a comprehensive co-curricular activities programme where there is something to offer every student, whether it is academically related, sports or other activities of interest. Our COBIS Secondary Games team is a product of our rich co-curricular activities. We are very glad to be participating for the second time in the COBIS Secondary Games. Our first experience was worth the while and this time we hope do better in athletics and football events which are where our strengths lie. City of Sheffield Pipe Band The City of Sheffield Pipe Band was formed in 1908 by Pipe Major George Urquhart when he ventured to Sheffield as a young man from his native Isle of Skye. The Sheffield Pipe Band steadily grew between 1908 and the start of WW1 in In post war years, the band continued to thrive. Its pipers, drummers and dancers performing at a widening range of events across the UK. In 2018, the band is under the direction of Pipe Major Keith Arnott and Drum Major Dave White and continues to represent Sheffield both in the country and overseas, most recently performing for dignitaries from The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield to members of the Royal Family. In June of this year the band has been invited to perform at commemorative events taking place in Belgium to commemorate the 100th anniversary of WW1 including playing at the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres. Band members are drawn from the local region and proudly wear their City of Sheffield Tartan when performing. The colours of the tartan represent all aspects of Sheffield s history - grey for the steel industry; blue and green to represent the city s five rivers and seven hills; and red for the heat of the furnaces needed for our metalworking heritage.

22 Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium (SHUCAS) on Woodbourn Road is the home to outdoor athletics for Sheffield and the surrounding areas. SHUCAS provides world-class innovative technologies, developed by the Centre for Sports Engineering Research, installed as part of an Olympic Legacy project. These technologies can enhance the experience of all users, from children experiencing their first athletics event to international athletes requiring world-class performance analysis. The venue offers a variety of facilitates such as a 400m running track, pole vault and high jump areas, throws fields for shot, discuss or javelin and much more. It also has on-site changing room and parking with a central stand offering great views of the action for up to 450 spectators. As well as hosting the COBIS (Council of British International Schools) Games, Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium hosts a vast range of events including national athletics meetings, school sport days, team building activities, festivals and outdoor displays. The stadium is located on the tram line about half way between the city centre and Meadowhall with a number of bus routes also serving the site. There is limited on-site parking for events in addition to large amounts of on-street parking in the surrounding area. To find out more information about the stadium, including opening hours and venue hire please visit the sport facilitates section at St George s Park Graves is the first site to open and launch the first FA affiliated Parklife project in Sheffield, due to spread across the country in the next few years. The Parklife project is funded by the FA, Sport England, Sheffield City Council and a number of other parties in order to get the football facilities within Sheffield to a better standard. The income generated from the hubs (soon to be 3 in Sheffield) gets re-invested back into grassroots football. SGP Graves is a state of the art facility with 2 full sized 3G pitches, 1 x grass pitch, bar/café area as well as 6 changing rooms equipped with showers and tactics boards. City of Sheffield Swim Squad is a performance swimming club that seeks to give talented and committed athletes from the South Yorkshire area a route to fulfil their potential and become the best that they can be. Since 1981 the club has won over 250 National Championship medals, more than 100 GB caps, and six Olympic and one Paralympic representations. But more than this, the club provides the environment, ethos and skilled coaching that equips young people with the discipline and commitment to succeed at whatever they choose to become as young adults, and be valuable members of the community. During this period the club has had six Olympians and one Paralympian; Karen Clifton in 1988, Alan Rapley and Janko Gojkovic in 1996, James Kirton in 2008 and Ellie Faulkner, Rebecca Turner and James Crisp in 2012 and 2016 Games. The club s role of honour includes more than 50 national champions, winning over 250 national medals and over 100 GB caps. The City of Sheffield and Dearne Athletic Club is one of the North of England s premier clubs, with a senior men s team which is in the Premiership of the British Athletics League. They have a mix of athletes from varied cultural backgrounds from ages 8 year olds to seniors and veterans. The club caters for athletes of all ages, ethnicity, and abilities to develop their potential in the range of disciplines that athletics offers. The club provides free coaching, in a fun and friendly atmosphere, from UK Athletics qualified coaches in track & field, road, cross country or race walking, to help athletes realise their potential. The club has the use of Sheffield s state of the art facilities at the English Institute of Sport. Athletes of any ability are welcome to join the club. The origins of the club go back to 1894 when the Sheffield United Harriers club was formed, a combined cross country and walking club. In the early 1970s the Sheffield City Athletic Club was formed supported by Olympians Sheila and John Sherwood. This was a breakaway club from the Hallamshire Harriers. In 1975 this club amalgamated with Sheffield United Harriers to form Sheffield Athletics Club,in 2000 the athletic club joined forces with the highly successful Sheffield Race Walking Club, and subsequently renamed the club, City of Sheffield Athletic Club. Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, World Heptathlon Champion, World Indoor Pentathlon Champion and 2012 Olympic Heptathlon Champion, is one of the many members of City of Sheffield and Dearne Athletics Club that compete for Great Britain.

23 Code of Conduct COBIS Secondary Games Sheffield 2018 By attending the COBIS Games, individuals agree to abide by the Codes of Conduct as outlined below. Participating schools must ensure that all athletes, coaches and spectators have read and acknowledged the relevant code. Should spectators, coaches or athletes break these codes of conduct, there may be consequences, including but not limited to, the individuals involved not being able to attend in future years. Coaches, Teachers and Chaperones Code of Conduct Follow the rules with regards to participation. All players need and deserve appropriate time, as specified in the rules. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents as well as for the judgment of officials and opposing coaches. Compliment participants on their efforts. Condemn unsporting behaviour. Ensure that your behaviour is consistent with the principles of good sporting behaviour. Refrain from criticism of, or reaction to, the officials judgments and decisions. Maintain a standard of dress appropriate to the presentation of the team. Refrain from over-zealous coaching from the side-line. Ensure your students are adequately supervised at all times. Refrain from smoking when supervising students. Refrain from consuming alcohol at any time. Players Code of Conduct Be a good sport. Play for enjoyment and strive for personal excellence. Work hard for your team as well as for yourself. Treat all teammates and opponents as you enjoy being treated yourself. Compete by the competition conditions, rules and the spirit of the Games. Remember children play for enjoyment. Do not let your behaviour detract from their enjoyment. Let officials and coaches conduct events without interference. Support skilled performances and team play with generous applause. Demonstrate respect for opposing players and their spectators. Respect the officials and team leaders; if they ask you to do something, please do so. Encourage participation by your (and all) children. Provide a model of good sportsmanship for your child to copy. Be courteous in your communication with players, team officials, game officials, sport administrators and other spectators. Make all other spectators feel welcome on all occasions. Parents and the school will be notified. Any additional expense incurred will be the responsibility of the parents of the student or coach.
