Editor's Choice Success Begets Success Committee Of Supply Debate Shirley Tan-Oehler Senior Manager, Strategic Communications Several alumni have spoken up in support of the Singapore Sports School Strategic Review Committee s recommendation for the Sports School to enhance its through-train pathway to allow selected student-athletes to bypass the national examinations and continue with the development of their sports. In response to Mr Lawrence Wong s speech in Parliament on 12 March 2015, Olympian Calvin Kang Li Loong said being on the through-train programme contributed to his ability to compete at the highest level and qualifying for a place in university.

Calvin, from the 2004 pioneer batch of student-athletes, was on the through-train pathway that led to the Auckland University of Technology Diploma. Not sitting for a national examination and going on to the next level? The through-train pathway was unheard of in those days. The AUT Diploma programme conducted at the Sports School meant a continuation of a sportcentric curriculum. During my final year of the diploma programme, I was selected for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. I had comprehensive training and competitions to prepare for the Games. Isabelle Li Siyun won a Singles silver medal at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, the year when the national table tennis player was in Secondary 4. Being on the through-train pathway meant she did not have to sit for the GCE O Level Examinations. The sport-friendly Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management programme which the Sports School developed with Republic Polytechnic allowed Isabelle to train intensively and win a gold and two silver medals at the Jakarta 2011 and Nay Pyi Taw 2013 Southeast Asian Games. I was able to pursue my sporting dreams and academic endeavours concurrently. The staff at the Sports School and RP worked together closely to assist me in planning my schedule for the year. Arrangements were made to send me prereadings, worksheets and lectures so that I could continue to work on them when I was travelling or during rest time, even when I was overseas, said Isabelle, who graduated from RP with a near perfect Grade Point Average and was eventually offered the Yale-NUS College Dean s Scholarship. Mr Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, told Parliament during the Committee of Supply Debate for his ministry that the Singapore Sports School Strategic Review Committee has been seeking input from various groups and people, and studying the approaches and models in other countries. One area the Committee is studying is how to extend the development pathway for student athletes, so that they can continue to benefit from a supportive environment that would enable them to study, train and develop as an athlete, beyond their secondary school years. These post-secondary years are critical as athlete development often spans late adolescence and early adulthood. One idea is for the Sports School to offer predominantly 6+ years through-train programmes within the school, and to strengthen linkages with Institutes of Higher Learning, including local and overseas universities, to provide a wider range of athlete-friendly post-secondary pathways.

Mr Wong said the Committee will be finalising its report after further consultation with stakeholders across the sporting and academic community, and the full report will be released later this year. Feature Zul The Rocket Boy Gets Into Parliament Committee Of Supply Debate Shirley Tan-Oehler Senior Manager, Strategic Communications He outran everyone in CareRunners so often that he was nicknamed, Zul The Rocket Boy. His mentor at SportsCares, organisers of the social running group, took notice and later found out that more than anything, Mohamed Zulkhairi Putera Mohamed Zali wanted to study at Singapore Sports School. That started the process of getting him to train under national middle- and long-distance coach, G Elangovan, to prepare him for qualification for a place in the secondary school that grooms sports champions.

In less than three months, Zulkhairi won his first-ever race at the Akira Swift Championship. His time of 2 min 19 sec would have qualified him for the C Division Boys 800m final at the 2014 National School Track and Field Championships. Zulkhairi was introduced to the Sports School and Coach Remy Gan took the 13- year-old boy under his wings. Senior General Manager Jenny Lim said: Zul never failed to turn up for training without good reason and he would inform us ahead. He was always punctual, too. He possessed a positive attitude a trait we look for when scouting for talents for the Track and Field Academy, and he was respectful to his coach. We gave him an assessment test after he had trained with us for a short period, a process all our applicants go through. He made the cut and we took him in. Zulkhairi, who joined the Sports School as a midstreamer in January 2015, was highlighted by Parliamentary Secretary Low Yen Ling in her speech in Parliament on 12 March Zul is now a volunteer at the 28th Southeast Asian Games. Just last Saturday (7 March 2015), Zul and his sister helped out at our 90-Day Countdown to the Sea Games. So as you can see how Zul is giving back to society because he has experienced first-hand how SportCares has made a difference in his life over the course of one year, said Ms Low during the Committee of Supply Debate for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Zulkhairi s story caught the attention of the media and journalists asked to interview him. I have experienced for myself how sports helped me become more confident when my talents were acknowledged and I volunteer so that others can have those opportunities too," Zulkhairi told The Straits Times. It was Zulkhairi s father who signed him up with SportsCares. My wife and I work and we don t spend as much time as we want to with Zulkhairi. Left at home after school with his four younger siblings, he soon became bored and started hanging out in the void deck. He played football with some older boys who I later discovered had some undesirable habits, said Mr Mohamed Zali Ahmad, who transports patients to and from kidney dialysis. Mr Zali searched on the Internet for organised social programmes for his son and found SportsCares, a unit of Sport Singapore that works to improve the lives of

underprivileged children, youth-at-risk, needy seniors, people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities and the disadvantaged in our community. Mr Zali signed his son up for two programmes the CareRunners programme and the Saturday Night Lights football programme held at the Sports School. When Zul told me that he wanted to study at the Sports School, I just knew this is the place for my boy. But the Sports School only takes in those who are talented in sports. I thought Zul is quite talented and I m glad that Sports School coaches also think so. I m very happy, said Mr Zali. Zulkhairi s mother, Madam Norazlin Muhammad Mansor, who works as a Park Ambassador at Resorts World Sentosa, said: I always tell my son now that he has a chance to study at his dream school, he must work hard and not waste the opportunity he is given. Zulkhairi said: At the Sports School, I see champions everywhere, and several are not much older than me. If they can make it, I have hope that I will also make it. I will definitely work hard and I m not going to give up. This week, I trained in sprints instead of running longer distances, and I ached the next day. I found new muscles! Every day is a day of discovery.

Sports Badminton B Boys Stumble At The Final Hurdle North Zone Inter-Schools Badminton Championships Singapore Sports School completed the North Zone Inter-Schools Badminton Championships with three championship and one runner-up titles. Starting from 12 February 2015, our boys and girls won every match leading to the finals. On 4 March, while our C Boys beat Maris Stella High School 5-0, our B Boys was defeated 2-3 by Bowen Secondary School. The next day, it was the girls turn to go to battle and our C Division team took a 5-0 victory over Xinmin Secondary School. Our B Girls finished the season with a 4-1 win over Singapore Chinese Girls School. Bowling B Girls Score A Victories 22nd National Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships Alvin Koh General Manager, Bowling Academy

Over the years, our teams have made 24 Clean Sweeps at the National Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships, winning the gold, silver and bronze medals in a single event, but no team had won all the podium prizes in a championship before until the 22nd National Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships. On 12 March 2015, our B Division girls stepped up to receive gold, silver and bronze medals in the Singles, Doubles, Quartet and All-Events before Secondary 4 Captain Goh Xue Qi and Secondary 3 Captain Nur Amirah Ng were presented with the Overall Girls Championships Trophy. This is also the fourth time that Singapore Sports School won the Overall Girls Championships Trophy with a perfect 10 points, the previous three occasions being 2007, 2013 and A bowler s total pinfalls for the Singles, Doubles and Team events are combined for the All-Events ranking and it is nothing less than remarkable that a school makes a clean sweep of the top 4 positions. In fact, our girls took the first 6 positions and 9th and 10th spots for eight of them to rank in the top 10 among 162 competitors in the category this year. There was also much to celebrate in the boys camp when the team of Jarred Lim Jia Le, Oh Han Qin, Eugene Tok You Jun and Nu man Syahmi Yusri overtook ACS (Independent) for the Quartet gold medal. The boys had trailed the Block 1 leaders by 49 pins but pushed on determinedly to win by 89 pins. It was double happiness when Jarred was named the All-Events gold medallist as the last time a Sports School male student-athlete had won the title was Darren Ong Wei Siong and Muhammad Danial Zheng Yi Abdul Nasir made it a 1-2 finish that year. Going into the last game in the Quartet event, Jarred knew he needed to knock down at least 237 pins for the win and he made the gold medal a certainty by striking home from the seventh frame for a 256 finish, which also won him a second High Game award; he had won the Singles High Game award with 264 pinfalls in his fourth game. The match was delayed for 10 minutes in the second half when the lightning warning alert came on. Another long-range effort from Amirul from 30 yards gave Sports School the lead in the 71st minute before Syed Firdaus Syed Hassan sealed victory in the 74th minute. 18 Character Excellence Champion Prescribes A Dose Of 'Moktivation' Lessons From The Champions Jansen Yeo Senior Executive, Strategic Communications Dr Mok Ying Ren certainly knows a thing or two about being a champion. He won two gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games in triathlon at Nakhon Ratchasima in 2007 and in marathon at Nay Pyi Taw in He is the Men s 5,000m National Record Holder and he is training to clock 2 hr 18 min to qualify for the marathon at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Dr Mok shared with Singapore Sports School student-athletes his four main principles on how to become a champion as part of the Lessons From The Champions series on 23 February Setting Goals In 2012, Dr Mok wanted to see how far he could go in distance running and took one year off work to train fulltime. He set key milestones to meet, such as the 2013 and 2015 Sea Games, with the eventual goal of clocking 2 hr 18 min to qualify for the marathon at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

In goal-setting, you need to try to be objective and set a goal which you can actually achieve. It should be something that s quantifiable and within your control, said Dr Mok. Act Like A Champion Dr Mok may have won two Sea Games gold medals but he has also met with failure in his journey to becoming a champion. He did not qualify for the 2005 and 2009 Sea Games and missed the 2011 edition due to an injury. Such setbacks have only succeeded in spurring him on. He said: Never give up. Champions don t give up, they just keep trying. Failure is something that you should embrace because it will lead you to the next stepping stone upwards. Dr Mok told student-athletes that they should have the same attitude towards training and studying and be consistent with their daily work. You need to start studying regularly and you need to start training regularly every day, bit by bit, and you progress from there. He advised student-athletes to learn to control the what can be controlled. If it rains, train indoors; if you are injured, do another form of rehabilitation exercise. Student-athletes must have the discipline to be responsible on matters such as nutrition and punctuality. Think Like A Champion Dr Mok shared the need to think like a champion in order to be one. One way is to understand your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your competitors, he said. Dr Mok gave the example of the 2007 Sea Games triathlon race in which he researched his competitors strengths and weaknesses prior to the Games. He knew that he was strong in swimming and as long as he could keep within 1 minute of his competitors in the cycling leg, he stood a good chance of catching them in the running leg; and he did as he won the gold medal by 20 seconds. If you know your strengths and weaknesses, you can actually use this knowledge to calm yourself down and perform better. In addition, to adopt a champion s mindset, student-athletes must start to focus on the process, and not necessary just the outcome, prioritise what is important and what is urgent, and ask questions to find out more.

Be A Champion According to Dr Mok, champions should keep an open mind and be receptive to new ideas, to always be prepared to try them out and see whether it works. In his journey to become a champion, Dr Mok has met many people who have inspired him. Likewise, he is also an inspiration to many others. He urged the student-athletes to inspire others, because when you share with someone, you actually reinforce your own learning and you better understand what you are doing at the end of the day.

Media Sea Spectacular Sport Action Count Down To Singapore 2015 Southeast Asian Games Manoj Jeyapala (Fencing Academy) Muhamad Ashraf Mohd Ismail (Football Academy) Rishika Ghanamoorthy (Netball Academy) We spent the afternoon of 7 March 2015 recording Episode 8 of Kannottam 360, a forum discussion programme of Vasantham, the Tamil station of MediaCorp, which examines topics closest to the hearts of Singaporeans. The chosen topic for us was the upcoming Singapore 2015 Southeast Asian Games, which we felt was right up our alley as we re from Singapore Sports School and have a natural interest in the topic. Our episode will be released on 17 March Recording for the programme was a Learning Journey for us as in preparing to go in front of the camera, we had to find out more about the history of the Sea Games, which countries have stayed at the top of their game since the first Southeast Asian Peninsula Games (Seap Games) in 1959 and who from the Sports School family have a shot at representing Singapore on home soil from 5 to 16 June The first surprise we had was being told that we spoke too well. When Ashraf was midway through his rehearsal for the first question, Director Vishnu M Anandh stopped him and asked why he spoke like a scholar. We were bewildered. Aren t we supposed to speak well? Mr Vishnu explained that in a

television programme, it is important to engage our viewers, so we have to speak like we would with our friends and family and in more relaxed tones. As we went along, Mr Vishnu helped us to choose simpler words and phrases that would convey the same meaning. This is one skill to remember. Also in the programme were alumni Ayshath Zaseela and Kugapriya Chandran who graduated from the Sports School in 2014, and Lossini Jeyapandiyen, from the pioneer batch who is a second year public policy student and is taking time off school to intern in the Ministry of Finance. Kugapriya and Lossini were from the Track and Field Academy, while Ayshath was from the Netball Academy. Being family, we were at home in offering to each other alternative words or phrases to replace tongue trippers and we were able to deliver our lines more naturally when the camera was turned on us. Here are some snippets of information which we prepared for our episode: No. of TeamSG athletes on Provisional List 950 No. of TeamSG athletes in the 19 sports competed by Sports School Family 583 No. of athletes on Provisional List in Sports School Family 137 No. of Alumni 117 No. of Student-Athletes 20 No. of Debutants sports competed by Sports School Family Badminton, Bowling, Diving, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Netball, Pencak Silat, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Synchronised Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon, Track and Field, Water Polo and Water Skiing Seasoned Campaigners BOWLING At the Jakarta 2011 Sea Games, Jazreel Tan Shi Hua, New Hui Fen and Daphne Tan Shi Jing bowled their way to the gold medal in the Team of 5 event,

finishing almost 500 pinfalls ahead of their nearest competitors, Indonesia. Jazreel picked up a bronze in the Singles event and Daphne partnered her sister Cherie to a silver in the Doubles. The sister act combined with Jazreel for another silver in the Trios event. Bowling was not competed at the Nay Pyi Taw 2013 Sea Games. At the Incheon 2014 Asian Games, Jazreel won the accolade of the most bemedalled Team Singapore athlete in all sports 1 gold 2 silvers and 1 bronze. Hui Fen became a double Asian Champion in January 2015 when she won the Trios gold medal and Masters Final Stepladder gold medal at the Asian Bowling Championships. SAILING Among the sailors from the Sports School family are 5 world champions Victoria Chan Jing Hua, Griselda Khng, Cecilia Low Rui Qi, Darren Choy Wong Loong and Sherman Cheng Feng Yuan. Darren won the Byte CII World Championship twice, in 2010 and Cecilia, Sherman and another alumnus, Andrew Paul Chan Li Jian are also Asian Games gold medallists. Scott Glen Sydney is an Asian Games bronze medallist. SWIMMING This will be the sixth Sea Games for Tao Li; she has won 24 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals in five Sea Games. Amanda Lim Xiang Qi is the fastest woman in water over 50m. Since the Vientiane 2009 Sea Games, she has broken the Record each time she competes in the event. TABLE TENNIS Pang Xue Jie competed at the Sea Games for the first time in Nakhon Ratchasima in 2007, at 14 years old. He played in the Men s Team event and won a gold medal. At the Jakarta 2011 Sea Games, he and his partner caused an upset when they beat the top-seed pair, also from Singapore, to the gold medal. TRACK AND FIELD Among the 20 athletes from Sports School on the Provisional list are 2 Olympians Calvin Kang Li Loong (Beijing 2008) and Dipna Lim Prasad (London 2012). Calvin had represented Singapore in the Sea Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Olympic Games before he reached 21 years old. He is the only Singaporean in any sport to have made this achievement of competing in all the 4 majors. Dipna won the 400m Hurdles bronze medal at the Nay Pyi Taw 2013 Sea Games. We are expecting more than 7,000 athletes from 11 nations to converge in Singapore to compete in 402 events across 36 sports. They have all trained very hard to qualify for the Sea Games and you can be sure that they will do their best.

It is going to be extra special for TeamSG because this is home and they would want to make Singaporeans proud. As young sportsmen and sportswomen, we know we always perform best when we have the spectators cheering us on. We hope that Singaporeans will show up at the various stadiums to support our TeamSG athletes. Entry is free for some sports, so we should take advantage of this privilege to enjoy this sports extravaganza together as Singaporeans.
