SPOTLIGHT ON SPORT February 2017 March 2017 Farringtons School An Olympic Visit! Chloe Rogers, GB Hockey Player and Olympian, came to School on Monday 6 March to present Morgan Squibb with a scholarship award from Schoolblazer Ltd, (our uniform supplier) and to give a presentation to Years 5-9 on her sporting experiences. Chloe also participated in some games lessons during the afternoon, and was there to cheer on our girls as they engaged in inter house fixtures. It was great to have Chloe visit our School, and share with us her amazing journey from School Sports to a London 2012 Olympic Bronze medal! We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Schoolblazer and SquadKit for organising this wonderful opportunity. Silly Socks Netball Tournament! U11 A TEAM!

Staff vs Sixth Form Netball! In the continuation of our Staff vs Sixth Form Competition, March saw the pupils take on the staff in netball! In a fiercely fought affair, where the staff were leading for long portions, the students once again triumphed as they clawed back a 5-0 deficit to win 6-8 at the final whistle. The staff may have lost the battle but the war will resume in the summer term, when our warriors face off at rounders! Who could Row Row their boat the best? On 7th and 8th of March Year 7-10 students competed in an indoor rowing competition. The three rowing machines, paid for by the FPA, where connected to a laptop and a screen was projected onto the sports hall wall to allow participants and spectators to see the race unfold. Each race consisted of a member of each house. Three points were given for the winners, two for second and one for third. The final standings after all the races are as follows: Mr Doyle, Director of Sports House Results Best Times 3rd Fisher 32 Points Year 7/8 Girl Cyrstal Bunyan, Wilson 2nd Wilson 41 points Year 7/8 Boy Connor Davidson, Davies 1st Davies 49 points Year 9/10 Girl Georgina Elson, Wilson Year 9/10 Boy Magnus Funder-Nissen Fisher

Junior Gymnastics! This week Farringtons hosted the Key Steps Gymnastics in the Sports hall. The Year 4 girls arrived early to get their hair braided and change into their school competition leotards. The team of gymnasts arrived at the sports hall along with 13 other primary schools. The gymnasts had to perform three disciplines Vault, Floor and Body Conditioning. Junior School Gymnasts in Action! Our pupils returned home with plenty of silverware after a Successful afternoon. Farringtons School at Crystal Palace for the largest cross country event held in the UK. Farringtons received a medal after finishing 3rd in the Year 5/6 race.

Ski Racing with Sam Hummel It has been a busy two months for me. In December I took part in the Canada Cup in Jasper, Canada and then at the end of January, I represented Farringtons in the British School boys Championship Wengen in Switzerland. This year I was competing in the U14 category even though I am only 12 so I expected the races to be tougher this year. The two venues, Jasper and Wengen, couldn t have been more different. Jasper is in the heart of the Canadian wilderness. It took us hours to drive there from Calgary. For the last hours, driving on a famous Icefields Parkway (the road was covered with snow and ice), we didn t see any cars or houses until we reached Jasper. Jasper feels very connected with nature. Wengen on the other hand is a beautiful Swiss resort shadowed by the Eiger and Jungfrau which is a throw back to the 1960s. Neither trip was in any way a holiday, with each day having an intense schedule including training and/or racing, ski preparation and of course eating and sleeping. The Canada Cup was a challenge mainly because of the temperature which reached -36C. IPhones stopped working and my brother and one of the parents got mild frostbite! As with all major races there was a Slalom and Giant Slalom (GS) race. In the GS I came 7 th in the U14 and was the fastest racer born in In the Slalom I was really, really nervous and I missed a gate near the top of the course so didn t register a time. I was really disappointed but skiing is a hard sport. It can be brutal at times. In the second run I did OK coming 8 th in the U14. In the evenings we did a few activities the best of which was curling which was really hard but great fun!! On the last day a few of us went heli-skiing which was epic but really tiring. The competition in Wengen is quite fierce since it is the British School boys Championships. On the first run of the Giant Slalom I skied really well and finished 15 th in the U14s, 4 th in my year group. It was probably my best ever run in a race on snow. My second run was good and meant I finished 17 th and 5 th in my year which I was delighted with, I nearly beat my brother!!! Now I am back in England I am looking forward to the dry ski slope season! Sam Hummel, Year 8

Under 9 Boys Football Team This term, Farringtons Year 4 boy s football team have certainly developed, not only as players but also as sportsman. Following a sensational victory in the St Dunstan s Tournament, the Farringtons team went into their next match extremely confident. Breaside School tried hard but could not defend against our long range shots, some from the half way line, and excellent dribbling skills. The final score was 3-1. Our next match was a disaster! St Christopher proved to be very good tacklers and held their positions well under pressure. St Christopher s scored first and this made the rest of the game very difficult for our boys. To their credit, Farringtons picked up their heads and scored an equaliser just before half time. Negativity crept in and St Christopher scored a second goal in the final minute of the game. The boys took the defeat to heart but all promised they would step up the effort in the next game. The next match was against West Lodge. Farringtons started the match with that winning look in their eyes and it wasn t long before the first goal was scored. What followed could only be described as pure fun. The boys passed the ball around with ease and at no point did they let negativity creep into the match. Final score 5-1 to Farringtons. Mr Suverkrop
