3 Ilkka Kanerva 2017 we are a part of the IAAF World Series In the autumn of 2012 three Track and Field clubs in Turku, the Finnish Athletics and Paavo Nurmi family took a common task and set their goals high - to get Paavo Nurmi Games, the traditional track and field meeting, back into an international top-level Meeting Circuits even into the Diamond League. Yet another even more important task that was taken was to bring Paavo Nurmi s sports and cultural heritage into 21st century. To carry out the tasks these stakeholders, a Finnish track and field family together with the Nurmi family, then founded a company Paavo Nurmi Turku. The company s long term plan was set to the year 2017, which is at the same time a celebration year of Paavo Nurmi 120 years and Finland s 100 years of independence. At the moment there is no doubt that by 2017 Paavo Nurmi Games, Paavo Nurmi Festival and Paavo Nurmi Legacy work have reached a whole new level and will give an excellent new platform for the years to come. The positive results and a great support from the public in Finland and also from the athletic family throughout the world has been very encouraging. Turku wants to be the most attractive city of the Northern Baltic Sea and different events are key factors in realizing this goal. We are interested in hosting big sports events every year in Turku. Developing Paavo Nurmi Stadium facilities has been a high priority and yearly investments will take place also in the future. 9 Paavo Nurmi Legacy Paavo Nurmi is considered the greatest runner of all time. He was known as The King of Runners or the Flying Finn. Famous all over the world, Nurmi became an unending source of national pride for the newly independent Finland. Conveying and honouring the legacy of Paavo Nurmi is not only an opportunity, it s an honour. The goal is to establish permanent and visible activities honouring the great runner, in order to ensure that the Paavo Nurmi Legacy is passed down to future generations

11 Paavo Nurmi Legacy Finnish Sport Gala Paavo Nurmi Award Paavo Nurmi Award is given to an action that has significantly contributed to improving active and healthy lifestyle in Finland. The first ever Paavo Nurmi Award was given to the city of Mikkeli as an acknowledgement for its project The perfect sports month that was implemented in the fall Paavo Nurmi Award is given by the Finnish National Sports Awards Gala and the Paavo Nurmi Foundation. The award was presented by Mika Nurmi, the Chairman of the Paavo Nurmi Foundation, and the legendary runner Lasse Viren. In 1968 Paavo Nurmi decided to establish a foundation carrying his name to solve the puzzle of heart disease. The Paavo Nurmi Foundation operates along two main lines: it arranges international conferences for top scientists and offers grants for individual researchers. The themes of the conferences, which are held every few years, are selected with a view to the future. So far, there have been 17 conferences. Worldwide, these conferences have been considered crucial in keeping remote Finland in touch with the world s leading researchers, who are also respected by the Nobel Committee. Projects supported by the Foundation include the start of dialysis treatment and doctor ambulance services in Finland

12 Paavo Nurmi Legacy Paavo Nurmi Foundation XVIII Symposium Futures technology and cardiovascular diseases Aug 31st Sep 2nd 2016, Turku Paavo Nurmi Foundation Paavo Nurmi Foundation has donated more than 3 million euros for medical research. In discussions with top medical experts of the time, notably Pentti I Halonen and Lauri Kalaja, both professors of medicine with a profound interest in cardiology, Nurmi came to realize that the causes of atherosclerosis - narrowing of the arterial lumen and formation of a blood thrombus leading to infarction - were far from being completely understood. It was perhaps rather predictable that a man of Nurmi s calibre and character would confidently set out to solve the riddle of atherosclerosis. He put his words into action by creating a foundation in his name for the purpose of financing and supporting the research and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The Paavo Nurmi foundation was established at a meeting held at the Deaconess Hospital in Helsinki on March 11th, In attendance besides Nurmi Chairman of Foundation Mika Nurmi and Bernard Lagat in New York. himself were Professors Halonen and Kalaja, Arne Hovitie, a bank manager, and Pekka Kare, a lawyer. These men constituted the first Board of Trustees. The foundation was registered at the Ministry of Justice on April 3rd, According to the articles of foundation: The foundation s name shall be the Paavo Nurmi Foundation and its place of residence Helsinki. The purpose of the foundation is to contribute to the research of heart and vascular diseases and public welfare in Finland to support the work being done these fields by distributing grants and financial aid for carrying out these tasks, and also to support and contribute to the intentions of the foundation in any other way accepted by the Board. The principle donations consisted ot shares in housing corporations, stocks and cash. It was also stated that: returns on the original capital can be used to realize the intentions of the foundation. The original capital of the foundation and any other property shall be invested in a financially sound way to bring returns

15 Paavo Nurmi Festival Paavo Nurmi is, alongside Usain Bolt and Carl Lewis, one of the only athletes in the world to have won 9 Olympic gold medals. The legacy of Turku s son is given due respect with Finland s largest sports event, the Paavo Nurmi Festival, held in the city every summer, with the highlight being the athletics competition the Paavo Nurmi Games

Shipbuilding in Turku originated in the 18th century. Today, the world s largest cruise ships are built in Turku. 17 River Aura When tourists are visiting Turku, they often ask: what is the main street of Turku? The answer is obvious. It is the River Aura, which splits the city centre and separates the old town called This Side of the River from The Other Side. And the river is a route itself. In the summertime one can take a boat-taxi or paddle along the river. When the winter is cold it is even possible to walk, ski or skate on the river ice. Everyday life, celebration, education and business everything happens on the riversides. In the old city centre, the Cathedral and Turku Castle are famous tourist attractions. The Archipelago Turku is located in the southwest coast of Finland. The city is surrounded by the most beautiful archipelago and unique cultural landscapes. An archipelago, dotted with up to 40,000 islands and stretching all the way to Stockholm, opens up from the mouth of the River Aura, running through the centre of Turku
