3 REPORTS BY OFFICERS Item Number 5.1 Title HISTORY FESTIVAL MAY 2018 Date 18 January 2018 Author(s) Reference Previous Motion Attachment/s Under Separate Cover Chiah Mayne, Team Leader Library Service CC15/626; CR18/1768 NIL NIL OFFICER S RECOMMENDATION Item 5.1 History Festival May 2018 (CC15/626) That the Gawler Committee recommends to Council that Council Staff, in collaboration with the Gawler Committee, develop an event for inclusion in South Australia s 2018 History Festival that incorporates the following: a. An update of the progress of the Gawler Civic Centre redevelopment. b. A brief history of the Town Hall and Institute Buildings. c. An overview of what to expect from the Cultural Heritage Centre and its services. BACKGROUND The History Festival is an annual celebration of South Australia s history. Each May, South Australians explore history through hundreds of events, including talks, workshops, tours, walks, exhibitions and special events. Each year, a variety of events are hosted by different groups in Gawler. The Gawler Committee hosted a talk for the 2016 History Festival, Murder, Mayhem and Suicide: A Mystery From our Colonial Past by Ian Purcell, in which Mr Purcell discussed the double suicide of Ernest Neville and Thomas Adamson in Gawler in No event was presented in 2017, due to the relocation for the Civic Centre project. COMMENTS/DISCUSSION The Gawler Civic Centre redevelopment is an exciting community infrastructure project that will be a catalyst for the Gawler CBD to once again be the cultural and business centre for the greater Gawler region. The Gawler Civic Centre will showcase local and regional cultural heritage with a heritage gallery and research centre, provide support to start-up and existing businesses, be a regional centre for visual and performing arts, and include a new-age library and digital hub to facilitate learning and social inclusion. At its meeting held on 14 December 2017, the Gawler Committee discussed ideas for an event for the 2018 History Festival. Page 3 of 7
4 One of the ideas discussed was an informative talk that would provide the community with a timely update about the progress of the Civic Centre redevelopment. The talk will discuss the history of the Town Hall and Institute, and also highlight the Cultural Heritage spaces within the new Civic Centre: the heritage gallery, the research centre and the Walk of Honour. Council staff will work with the Gawler Committee to develop and present this event in May 2018, as part of South Australia s History Festival. COMMUNICATION (INTERNAL TO COUNCIL) Manager, Business Enterprises and Communications Cultural Heritage Centre Coordinator CONSULTATION (EXTERNAL TO COUNCIL) The History Festival event will be promoted in the History Festival s official program of events, as well as on Council s social media platforms, advertisements in The Bunyip, and by promotional material within Council facilities. The event will be a valuable way to inform the community of the progress of the Civic Centre redevelopment. POLICY IMPLICATIONS Nil STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS Nil FINANCIAL/BUDGET IMPLICATIONS Registration costs for South Australia s History Festival are $50.00 (for an earlybird registration due by Friday 2 February), or $70.00 (for a standard registration due by Friday 13 February). The registration fee includes an event listing in the printed program (200,000+ copies distributed throughout the state); a listing on the History Festival website including up to four (4) images; our own copies of the program to distribute; copies of A3 festival posters and A2 event signage; and access to marketing resources and templates. An optional image in the printed program can be added for $ These costs are within the Gawler Committee s approved budget. COMMUNITY PLAN Objective 1.3: Protect and promote Gawler s unique heritage Objective 1.4: Foster a vibrant and active filled Council area Objective 1.5: Promote cultural heritage and the creative sector to build community spirit and pride Page 4 of 7
