47 USA CURLING MEDIA KIT 47 The Trials The city of Fargo will host the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Curling on Nov , 2013, at Scheels Arena, which hosted the 2011 National Championships. Four teams have qualifield so far based on last year s results at the Nationals in Philadelphia. Here is a look at the qualification process: Men s field maximum field of 5 teams: Team Heath McCormick, 2012 national champions Team Pete Fenson, 2012 national championship runner-up Top two teams from 2013 national championships If results of the 2012 and 2013 Nationals only creates two qualified teams (i.e., the same teams are first and second place), USA Curling s High Performance Program Selection Committee will select two teams to compete, taking the number to four. If there are three direct qualifiers via the 2012 and 2013 Nationals (if one team has placed in the top two in both 2012 and 2013), the HPP Selection Committee will select one team to compete in the Trials, bringing the total number to four. If there are four direct qualifiers via the 2012 and 2013 Nationals, the HPP Selection Committee will select one team to compete in the Trials, taking the total number to five. Teams qualified for the Trials must have a minimum of 3 of 4 or 4 of 5 original team members to be eligible to compete. Countries accumulate points based on final placement at the 2011, 2012 and 2013 world events. The Americans are currently ranked sixth. The top 10 countries with the most qualification points at the conclusion of the 2013 event will earn spots for the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia, March 7-16, After the retirement of three members of the 2010 Paralympic wheelchair curling team, which finished fourth in Vancouver, a lot of newcomers to the sport have started training in the national program.
