The team won the Gold Medal during the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe in Cyprus 2009 winning all matches in programme. BOWLS DAVID FARRUGIA Obtained a creditable 4th place during the XVI Mediterranean Games held in Pescara, Italy in CANOE NICOLA BORG COSTANZI Placed 2nd in the 1000m and 3rd in the 500m events in an International Regatta held in Limassol Cyprus in October
3 CHRISTOPHER CAMILLERI managed to qualify for the Final B in XVI Mediterranean Games held in Pescara 2009 obtaining national records in both the 500m and 1000m events. GYMNASTICS GYMNASTICS TEAM KIRSTY CARUANA, NICOLE PACE U ADREANNA ZAMMIT - Bronze Medalists as a Team in the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus The first ever medal won by Malta in a team event in Gymnastics. KIRSTY CARUANA Bronze Medal in the individual floor event at the Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus in She became the first ever medal winner in an individual women event in Gymnastics. POWER BOATS AARON CIANTAR Together with Angelo Tedeschi and Viktor Shemchuk, on 43 Seagull Chaurdron he won the SuperSport Class of the 2009 Powerboat P1 World Championship. RUGBY WOMEN RUGBY 7 S NATIONAL TEAM Esther Azzopardi, Beverie Sultana, Claire Casha, Charmaine Gauci, Marion Azzopardi, Colette Abela, Charlene Vassallo, Amanda Cassar, Victoria Aquilina and Dorianne Borg - Finished in the 3 rd place out of 11 countries during the Rugby 7s and European B Championships. 4
5 SAILING ARTIE CREW MIDDLESEA RACE 2009 SKIPPER LEE SATARIANO Lee Satariano as Skipper, Ivan Mallia, Jerome Mainamare, Peter Valentino, Matthew Gusman, Tom Ripard and Kurt Casapinta. Skipper Lee Satariano and his crew placed 3 rd in the IRC Class 4 and 4 th in the ORC Class 4. Artie was the best placed Maltese boat out of 73 boats. MAYA PODESTA Silver Medalist in the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus THOMAS ZAMMIT TABONA Gold Medal in the Optimist Class in the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus SHOOTING JASON J. AQUILINA & NICHOLAS CARABOTT The Trap Team made up of Jason J. Aquilina and Nicholas Carabott took part in the European Commonwealth Championships held in Isle of Man. They managed to win a Bronze Medal in the Team Event where 7 countries took part. DARREN VELLA & CLIVE FARRUGIA Skeet Won the Gold Medal in the team event during the European Commonwealth Championships. 5
6 NAZZARENO ATTARD Silver Medalist in the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus in WILLIAM CHETCUTI Besides winning the Gold Medal at the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus 2009 in the Double Trap Event, William s greatest success was the Silver Medal won at the XVI Mediterranean Games held in Pescara Italy. CLIVE FARRUGIA Skeet - Silver Medalist in the European Commonwealth Championships and Bronze Medallist in the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus in WILLIAM VELLA Silver Medalist in the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus in First ever Malta Medal in Indoor Shooting. SQUASH Men s Team Brad Hindle Deguara, Michael Fiteni, Bernard Bugeja, Stephen Schranz, Stephen Rizzo, Mark Lupi, James Bonello Ghio. Winners of the Team event - Gold Medal in the European Small Nations Squash Tournament. 6
7 Women s Team Annabelle Olivieri Munroe, Theresa Brousson, Johanna Rizzo and Colette Sultana Winners of the Team event - Gold Medal in the European Nations Challenge Cup where 7 countries participated. TABLE FOOTBALL MASSIMO CREMONA Currently ranked no 9 in the World. He was the finalist in an international event in the UK out of 46 competitors. MELANIE FENECH Being the only female athlete in Table Football in Malta, Melanie participated in the World Cup held in Rotterdam where she placed 3 rd winning the Bronze Medal. During the World Cup 48 players from 12 nations took part. MARK GAUCI Currently ranked no 7 in the World, he was the Semi-Finalist and Finalist in various International competitions. TABLE TENNIS SIMON GERADA - Winner of the Bronze Medal in the Singles event in the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe held in Cyprus in
8 TENPIN BOWLING SUE ABELA Finished 1 st in the Singles event, 1 st in the Masters event and 3 rd in all events at the Mediterranean Championships. She was crowned as Mediterranean Champion. She placed 3 rd in the Women s Category and 14 th Overall in the Paphos International Open. Finished 3 rd in the European Masters out of 60 bowlers. BRIAN FARRUGIA Finished 3rd in the Masters event at the Mediterranean Championships. MARK SPITERI In November 2008, participated in the Sofia International Open held in Bulgaria where he placed 13 th out of 171 bowlers and at the Paphos International Open held in Cyprus where he finished 2 nd out of 148 bowlers from 10 countries. TENNIS MATTHEW ASCIAK Semi-Finalist in the Singles event at the Kampala, Uganda F1 international event obtaining ATP ranking points for Malta after a number of years. 8
9 KIMBERLEY CASSAR & ELAINE GENOVESE - They took part in the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe in 2009 where they won a Bronze Medal in the doubles event. TRIATHLON DERMOT GALEA Took part in the Triathlon Championships for Small States of Europe and made finished in the 4 th place out of 32 competitors from 5 nations. Participated in the Marazion Middle Distance Triathlon in the UK, finished 3 rd overall from 100 athletes. Took part in the Ironman International Triathlon Competition in Austria where in his age group he placed 99 th overall out of 2100 competitors. KEITH GALEA Winner of the Wychaven English Nationals where 217 athletes participated. In the Triathlon Championships for Small States of Europe he placed 5 th out of 32 athletes from 5 nations. Achieved creditable results in the Hoeks Triathlon Lommel in Belgium, Hardwick Sprint Triathlon and the Milton Keynes Triathlon both in the UK. DANICA SPITERI Silver Medalist in the Triathlon Championships for Small States of Europe. MICHELLE WOOD Won the Silver Medal in the Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe where 7 athletes from 5 nations took part. She also took part in the European Triathlon Championships held in Holten, Netherlands where in her age group she finished 12 th out of 21 competitors. 9
