1 SKYE & LOCHALSH ARCHIVE RECORDS, The Rogue Money (Scotland) Act 1839 (2 & 3 Vict., c.65) empowered Counties to set up police forces and provided finance for the setting up of county police forces by the commissioners of supply. The Police (Scotland) Act 1857 (20 & 21 Vict., c.72) required all counties that had not already done so to establish and maintain a police force, and established the post of chief constable. County police forces were administered by a police committee made up of commissioners of supply, the lord lieutenant and the sheriff of the county. The Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 (52 & 53 Vict., c.50) transferred the powers and duties of the police committees to standing joint committees composed of county councillors, commissioners of supply and the sheriff-principal. Under the 1929 Local Government (Scotland) Act (19 & 20 Geo. V, c.25) some police forces were merged. There have been further mergers since and today there are only six police forces in Scotland: Northern, Grampian, Tayside, Central Scotland, Lothian and Borders, and Strathclyde. The first Northern Constabulary was established in 1969 when the constabularies of Caithness, Orkney and Zetland amalgamated. The present Northern Constabulary was established in 1975 and covers the local authority regions of Highland, Orkney, Shetland, and the Western Isles. Highland area is made up of the former counties of Inverness, Ross and Cromarty, Nairn, Caithness, and Sutherland, each of which had its own police force. Some Highland burghs also had their own force. Included within Highland are parts of Argyllshire and Morayshire. Records of the chief constables, station, officers and the Scottish Office were deposited by the Chief Constable, Northern Constabulary Headquarters, Perth Road, Inverness, and collected from police stations throughout the Highlands as part of a survey by Hilary Hanson, Colour coding for access RED = Can be released / viewed without reference to police BLUE = potential information may be released but refer the person to police BLACK = information will not normally be released as it may contain personal data on living persons (therefore comes under DP Act 1998).
