2 London 2012 was a magical moment for British sport, one that united UK high performance system behind an ambitious goal and delivered unprecedented medal success. The pride that we all felt injected a sense of momentum and responsibility to build on this success and UK Sport set out on the road to Rio with a commitment to taking our high performance system to the next level, making it stronger, more sustainable and even more successful. An essential part of the Rio strategy has been the increased focus on our partnership with the home nation sports councils to build an inclusive and thriving talent pathway. Through the continued support of Government and National Lottery, we were able to invest in an aspiration to do something exceptional in Rio, something never achieved by any previous host nation; to win even more Olympic and Paralympic medals in Rio while encouraging our athletes to actively inspire young people. Over the Rio cycle our funded athletes have delivered over school and community visits, reaching almost 750,000 children and young people, encouraging them to be active and to positively impact on their future ambitions. London 2012 also gave us the opportunity to build on the UK s event hosting reputation and over the past four years we have hosted 57 major sporting events - 33 of these as part of our #EveryRoadtoRio campaign which has helped qualify and prepare many of the athletes heading to Rio - reaching almost 6 million spectators across the UK, and so the legacy of London 2012 lives on. And now, on the eve of Rio 2016, where do we find ourselves in relation to our Rio aspiration? Our agreed medal targets with sports show us that better than London is within reach in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The minimum we expect is the best ever away Games in the Olympics, and better than London in the Paralympics. Most importantly, I m confident our athletes, with the world class support of the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations in Rio, will inspire the nation once again through their personal stories of endeavour and triumph. To that end, I m sure you will enjoy a very special Games with many incredible stories to report on, and I urge you to help us acknowledge National Lottery players as a crucial part of the team - none of this would be possible without them. Liz Nicholl, CBE Chief Executive Officer, UK Sport As we arrive at Rio 2016, I can say with real confidence that the high performance system in the UK is in as strong a place as it has ever been to my memory. Our athletes are amongst the best equipped in the world and following our phenomenal medal success at London 2012, we can expect many more amazing triumphs in Brazil that will make our nation immensely proud. At the EIS, we think of ourselves at the team behind the team and our 350 staff work tirelessly to support athletes and sports improve through the expert delivery of science, medicine and technology. In the four-year cycle to Rio, EIS practitioners have delivered over 950,000 hours of support to Olympic and Paralympic athletes, which represents over 4,500 hours each week. This means that our athletes heading to Rio 2016 will be the most supported in history. It is this investment that has made our high performance system the envy of many around the world and it illustrates all too clearly to me how far we have come since I was a young sprint hurdler competing at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics! Thanks to ongoing support from UK Sport, the Government and the National Lottery, we remain on track for huge success at Rio 2016 and on course in our vision to be the world leading institute of sport. We hope you find this media guide of use in allowing you to show how Great Britain has become a true powerhouse of Olympic and Paralympic sport and built one of the most successful high performance systems on the planet. It is this system that will deliver the iconic medal moments at Rio 2016 that will continue to inspire the nation. Nigel Walker National Director, English Institute of Sport I m confident our athletes, with the world class support of the British Olympic and Paralympic Associations in Rio, will inspire the nation once again.
