4 Jeff SHAFFER Head Diving Coach University of Wisconsin (1980) 10th Season Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer Shaffer Quick Facts: Has coached five of the last six NCAA men s platform champions Has coached the past seven SEC platform champions Shaffer s divers accounted for 50 points at the 2008 NCAA Championships Two-time NCAA Diving Coach of the Year Four-time SEC Diving Coach of the Year Coached on eight U.S. National Team staffs His divers have won nine NCAA titles Has coached 17 individuals to 74 All-America honors Jeff Shaffer came to Auburn 10 years ago as one of the most respected coaches in the diving community. Now, 51, Shaffer has improved the Auburn diving program in Olympic-size proportions. In nine short years, Shaffer, who was named the SEC Men s Diving Coach of the Year in 2008, has made the Auburn diving program into a complete complement to the Auburn swimming program, no small task when you consider that the swimming and diving squad has amassed 12 national titles. Last season, under the direction of Shaffer, Auburn s Kelly Marx and Dan Mazzaferro made the finals on all three boards at the NCAA Championships, accounting for 50 of Auburn s points at the meet while earning six All-America honors. His divers also won two of the three boards at the SEC Championships with Marx taking top honors on the 1-meter and Mazzaferro earning first on the platform. During the season, Steven Segerlin captured his first NCAA springboard title on the 3-meter while picking up his second platform title in a row, extending the AU streak to five, and with this victories secured the Tigers seventh overall NCAA team crown. For his efforts, Segerlin was named NCAA Male Diver of the Year. Segerlin also swept the titles on all three boards at the SEC Championships, becoming just the third diver in SEC history to pull off the feat. Another impressive feat from the 2007 NCAA Championships was the 99 points contributed to Auburn s total of 566 by the divers. The mark breaks the previous high total of 93 points at the 2004 Championships. The three Tiger divers, Segerlin, Kelly Marx and Dan Mazzaferro, also accounted for seven All-America honors. Just one week prior to Segerlin s performance, Shaffer coached sophomore Corey Gerlach and senior Lynnsey Segraves to All-America honors. Gerlach finished 10th on the 3-meter and 15th on the 1-meter as Segraves was sixth on the 3-meter and ninth on the platform. The points earned by their finishes proved to be vital in the women s fi h NCAA team crown. In the last six years alone, Shaffer s charges have claimed seven SEC and five NCAA titles - and in 2004, it was a Auburn sweep on the platform at the conference championships. The success of the season was evident as the Tigers set new records and received more honors in nearly every event during the course of the season, including the most diving points scored by a group of Auburn divers at a SEC or NCAA Championship. At the conclusion of the year, he was given USA Diving s Coach of Excellence Award a er guiding the Tigers to the 2004 USA Diving Men s Team Championship. Shaffer s biggest accomplishment to this point may have been the signing of Caesar Garcia in his first recruiting class seven years ago. Garcia went from an All-American as a freshman, who had also finished deadlast at the 2000 USA Olympic Team Trials, to a two-time NCAA platform champion the SEC and NCAA Male Diver of the Year in 2004 and a XXVIII Olympian by the time his stay on the Plains had ended. This earned Shaffer a coaching spot on the 2004 USA Olympic Coaching roster. He also drastically helped Ashley Rubenstein, one of his other first-class signees, transform into a fourth-place finisher on the 1-meter as a senior, as well as a 2004 USA Olympic Team Trials finalist, a National Team Member and most recently the 2006 U.S. National title on 1-meter. In 2003, Shaffer guided the Auburn diving program s to its most successful season up to that point. Garcia became just the second NCAA champion that the Auburn diving program has ever had when he tied Jason Coban of Michigan for the platform title at the men s championships in Austin, Texas. Garcia also picked up the squad s second straight SEC platform title a er teammate Ma Bricker captured it in On the women s side, Rubenstein earned a silver medal at the SEC Championships on the 1-meter, becoming the first AU woman to medal at the conference championship more than once since Marina Smith picked up three medals from , while freshman Kelsey Pa erson placed third on the platform. Shaffer s influence has also catapulted Bricker and Garcia to national and international prominence. The pair spent most of the 2003 summer Matt Bricker Steven Segerlin Cesar Garcia Lynnsey Segraves AUBURN SWIMMING AND DIVING

5 season competing in international events, including the World Championship Team Trials (the pair placed second in the synchronized 3-meter competition), the Speedo-FINA USA Diving Grand Prix, the FINA Italian Grand Prix (Bricker won the platform), the Speedo National Championships (the pair won the synchronized platform) and the World University Games, to which Shaffer served as a coach for the USA team. The icing on the cake came when Auburn captured the men s team title at the USA Diving Championships. A three-time Pacific-10 Diving Coach of the Year while at Southern California, Shaffer helped guide USC s women s team to a national title in 1997 and was also named the United States Olympic Commi ee s National Diving Coach of the Year in both 1997 and In 15 years of coaching Division I, Shaffer has coached five national champions, three silver medalists and seven bronze medalists - most recently Segerlin, who won the platform and 3-meter titles in as well as 17 individuals to 68 All-America honors. Bricker and Garcia each earned All-America honors during the 2002 meet as Garcia finished eighth on the 3-meter, which made the duo the first in school history to earn All-America honors in the same season, a feat they repeated in 2003 and 2004, bringing freshman Steven Segerlin along with them. In 2001, Shaffer coached Garcia to the team s first All-America honor since Koffi Kla in Garcia placed eighth on the platform at the NCAA Championships to become an All-American. Shaffer also guided Andrew Sivulka to the NCAA Championships in 2001, which had marked the first time two divers from Auburn had qualified for the men s NCAA Championships in the same year. On the women s side, Rubenstein captured a silver medal in the 1-meter event at the 2001 SEC Championships, which was the first medal for an Auburn woman diver since Marina Smith in Jeff Shaffer is one of, if not the very best, NCAA coaches in diving, said head coach Richard Quick. He has really improved athletes when they come into the program and improved them to a level that diving here has played a role in several of the national championships that we have. Prior to USC, he coached at LSU for two years. At LSU, Shaffer coached The Jeff Shaffer File Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer Collegiate Coaching Career Auburn Diving Coach present USC Diving Coach LSU Diving Coach Collegiate Coaching Honors NCAA Men s Diving Coach of the Year , 2007 SEC Men s Diving Coach of the Year , 2007, 2008 SEC Women s Diving Coach of the Year Pacific-10 Men s Diving Coach of the Year , 1999 Pacific-10 Women s Diving Coach of the Year four All-Americans, including a 1-2 finish in the 1994 NCAA platform competition (Susie Ryan and Kathy Carboy), and earned the SEC Women s Diving Coach of the Year honor. At the 1995 NCAAs, he guided his divers to four top-six finishes. His 20-year coaching career at the club level has proven even more successful. During that span, he has coached divers of all ages and ability levels and demonstrated the ability to develop divers to world renowned status. Shaffer s ability was recognized by the United States Olympic Commi ee in 1996 when they honored him as the inaugural recipient of the USOC National Developmental Coach of the Year for all Olympic Sports. Shaffer s divers include 10 World Junior Champions, 39 National Junior Champions, eight Senior National Champions, three Junior National Team titles and three Senior National Team titles. Shaffer has been honored twice by United States Diving as the Age Group Diving Coach of the Year and was also awarded the Coach of Excellence award in 1996 by United States Diving. Shaffer has served as a National Team coach for United States Diving in international competitions throughout the world including the 1994 and 1998 Goodwill Games, the 1997 FINA World Cup Championships and 1998 FINA World Aquatic Championships, the National Team coach in the summer of 2002 and the 2003 World University Games in Dague, Korea. At the 2004 Olympic Games, Shaffer was an assistant coach and most recently served as the co-head coach of the U.S. team at the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, where he coached current AU junior Segerlin and former All-American Ashley Rubenstein, among others. Because of his involvement in the United States Diving program, Shaffer was honored with ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange in January of A 1980 graduate of Wisconsin, he earned a bachelor s degree in physical education. Shaffer and his wife, Jenny, have two daughters, Amy (20), a junior at Auburn this year, and Kelly (19) and a son, J.J. (Jeffrey Jr.) (14). Tierney- Walker has a record in dual meets, including a 21-2 mark since taking over at Auburn. The Tigers have definitely been impressive since she arrived on campus as Auburn has two NCAA team titles to go along with seven individual NCAA titles in her three years on campus. Auburn has also racked up 155 All-America honors from 30 different athletes. AU has also picked up 23 SEC individual titles along with two team titles since Tierney-Walker came to the Plains. Dorsey Tierney-Walker has a pre y extraordinary record here at Auburn, winning two NCAA Championships in the two years she has been here, said head coach Richard Quick. I definitely think the intensity and the caring that she brings to her athletes is the reason that the women s team has been so successful the last two years. She is one of the really fine coaches in this country and she can coach the developing swimmer as well as the international-level athlete. Last season, Tierney-Walker coached the Tigers to their fi h SEC team title, the second in a row, and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships. Auburn won nine SEC individual titles, including an American record 800 free relay, en route to scoring points for the title in Tuscaloosa. At NCAAs, Ava Ohlgren picked up AU s lone individual title (200 IM) as the Tigers used a total team effort to finish second with 348 points. In , Auburn erased a 32-point final-day deficit for a 58-point victory over Arizona. In all, the Tigers earned 57 All-America honors from 19 student-athletes. The Tigers also picked up four individual NCAA titles as Rachel Goh won the 100 back, Ohlgren won the 400 IM, Hayley Peirsol won the 1,650 free and Adrienne Binder won the 500 free. Following the meet, Tierney-Walker and David Marsh shared the NCAA Coach of the Year honors. The performance at NCAAs was a carry-over from a dominating performance at the SEC Championships. Earning her third conference title as a coach, Tierney-Walker led the Tigers to 899 points at SECs, beating out their nearest competitor, Georgia, by 228 points. Auburn won 10 SEC titles at the meet, including three by Ohlgren as she was named SEC Freshman of the Year. Tierney-Walker and Marsh picked up SEC Coach of the Year honors. The 2006 NCAA Women s Championships will go down in history as the most exciting national meet ever, as the team race was decided by the final relay. Auburn came out on top by three points over defending national champion and host Georgia. Under the direction of Tierney- Walker 17 swimmers earned 53 All-America honors and two individuals were crowned national champions. In addition, Tierney-Walker saw three individuals and a relay to SEC crowns in her first season on The Plains. Under the tutelage of Tierney-Walker, Hoosier swimmers claimed a total of 99 All-American certificates during her time in Bloomington. Additionally, Tierney-Walker s swimmers secured nine individual and two relay Big Ten titles. As a team, the Hoosiers finished in the top 16 at the NCAA Championships in each of her final four seasons, including a ninthplace finish in 2005, the highest finish in Indiana history. The 2001 and 2002 Big Ten Coach of the Year, Tierney-Walker inherited a team that finished fi h in the conference the season prior to her first year at the helm of the Indiana program. Seven seasons later, she had coached IU to five top-three finishes in the Big Ten and amassed a (.731) dual meet record. In 2005, her final season at Indiana, the Hoosiers had five swimmers earn a total of 17 All-America honors while in 2004, 12 swimmers claimed honorable mention All-American honors in some fashion. The 2004 season also saw another first for a Tierney-Walker as she instructed the 200 freestyle relay team of Annica Lofstedt, Erin Smith, Tammy Kostner and Meghan Medendorp to All-America honors with an eighth-place finish. It was the first time during her tenure that a Hoosier relay team qualified for the championship finals. In six out of Tierney-Walker s seven years, a Hoosier relay or individual claimed a Big Ten title. Remarkably, over her last four years, Tierney-Walker s swimmers broke every IU swimming record. During the season, IU set 10 school records and prior to that, the campaign, 12 of the 19 records fell, including four of five relays. At the 2001 Big Ten Championships, her swimmers broke 18 of the 19 IU swimming records and set 36 personal best times. At the 2003 Big Ten Championships, Indiana outdistanced second-place Wisconsin, , behind the force of tremendous team depth. The elder Pursley is now the head coach of Great Britain Swimming, helping the country to prepare to host the 2012 Olympic Games in London. 12 Bryan KARKOSKA Auburn Strength and Conditioning PK Quick Facts: Played on the Auburn football team as a place kicker Works in strength and conditioning with Auburn s Olympic sports Earned both his bachelors and masters degrees at Auburn Infamous among Auburn student-athletes for his ATUBS training Strength and Conditioning Coach Auburn (1994 ) 13th Season Carrie McCAMBRIDGE The Auburn swimming and diving program - like all other sports at AU - are expected to be able to compete at the highest levels possible. With that in mind the Auburn swimming staff, just like all other Olympic sports, entrusts Olympic sports strength and conditioning coach Bryan PK Karkoska with their athletes. At Auburn, athletes are made faster, stronger and more athletic through the intensity and genius of the strength and conditioning program. Karkoska and his staff transfers his intensity and enthusiasm into his weight room through workouts. PK is an extraordinary coach, teacher, motivator and has had a lot to do with building the physical and mental side of being a great competitor in the Auburn program, said head coach Richard Quick. He has had a lot to do with building the team spirit of Auburn s program and then you couple that with the expertise that he has in the weight room and with his dry-land program and the ATUBS with his ability to transition what happens in the weight room to the water is really extraordinary. He is just a great asset to the Auburn team. Known throughout the Auburn swimming and diving program for its legendary workouts is PK s ATUBS training, which combines weight li ing and cardio-vascular exercises. ATUBS, formerly known as circuit training, stands for Auburn Team Unifying and Building Sessions. The sessions last for approximately an hour during the preseason and are used to establish and build team cohesiveness and the Auburn swimming work ethic and discipline. The circuit-training coincides with the training in the pool with an increased intensity on the dryland side, as well as, challenges the student-athlete both physically an mentally. The circuit was by far the hardest part of the season, but PK made sure that it was never an individual effort, the team got though circuit together. It s what bonded us in the end, and in essence made us tougher, said Aaron Ciarla, former men s team captain and a member of the 1997 and 1999 national championship teams. PK s workouts are just as hard, if not harder, than swim workouts, former AU swimmer and 2003 national champion Justin Caron said. Swimmers here are the ultimate champions, and they take a lot of pride in that, Karkoska said. If any other team on campus got secondplace in the nation, the city would shut down. Only the swim team sees second-place as a failure. They have the most pride of any team I coach. Karkoska s credible reputation follows him. Numerous universities call on a regular basis to find out what exactly he does with his program and in the weight room. He has also worked closely with the physiology department on several issues and has had numerous articles and essays published about exercise physiology and general health. A 1994 graduate of Auburn with a bachelor of science degree in exercise science, Karkoska, a Chicago, Ill., native, also earned his Masters of Education with an emphasis in exercise physiology on the Plains in McCambridge Quick Facts: Is in her second season as a graduate assistant on the Auburn staff Was a four-year letterwinner and All-American diver at Purdue Finished her career as a four-time All-American Was a two-time Big Ten Diver of the Year honoree Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Purdue University (2006) 2nd Season Carrie McCambridge enters her second season as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Auburn swimming and diving team.
